The Tamron G2 series is just killing it. With a six year warranty to boot! I did a head to head with the 70-200mm 2.8 G2 against the Nikon 7-200mm 2.8 FL w/D500. No wonder Nikon is losing market share to them. Tamron beats Nikon right out of the Camera and into Capture One Pro
It would have been interesting to compare the "kit" 24-70 f/4 in that group. I own the 24-70 2.8 E and G versions which are a lot more expensive than any of these lenses, particularly the E version that I find is slightly behind the older G version that does not have VR. But every test I have tried the $600(when buying a Z camera) f/4 Z mount thumps both F mount 24-70. The difference is seen in the center where they all are good but the corners at f4, the difference is so obvious no pixel peeping is needed. There are many reasons to get a Z camera but the Z mount lenses is one of the most important. Same with the 14-30 f/4 Z mount compared to the more expensive 14-24 2.8. The 50mm 1.8 S is the sharpest lens I have ever seen in the mid focal lengths.
Just got the Z7 with the Z 24-70 2.8S. This combo is absolutely amazing!!! If you make the switch you won’t regret it. This, coming from a Nikon D850 owner.

The thing people don’t get about the Tamron g2’s is they actually are tanks, sigma just looks like a tank but I’ve used the 18-35 and the lens feels flimsy like it wants to bend or twist too far making a clinking sound.
actually some people consider buying the tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 over the z just because of the price difference matt, it's less than half the price of a z where I live! If you could do a comparison of sigma, tamron and z lenses with the FTZ adapter, that'd be great!
I have my Nikon 24-70 G version on D850 and still love the results. Not sure why your beloved one is not capable anymore,or you feel it is getting old.Unless you compare it to hands-down Z version,it is very capable of doing the job.I believe it is getting old on paper, not in photo shoots. If that was true,Nikon might stop selling that! If you are not on landscape/nature shooting style that needs corner to corner sharpness, this lens by far is to go with.
I got the Sigma 70-200 F2,8 and I had to send it back because of the bad focusing even after tuning. I got the Tamron instead and straight out the box is great, incredible image quality so I got the 24-70 G2 from Tamron. Couldn't be more happier with Tamron lenses.
Great video. I just switched to Z6ii. Would love to see a comparison of the Sigma/Tamron (on FTZ) vs Z. I know the Z will win but again if it comes down to cost/value. I still use my D750 but my current 24-70 is showing age and doesn't have a focus motor.
I got the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 for my D800 more than a year ago and it's absolutely fantastic! But now for weddings I look forward a second body like Z7.
Tamron always works for me right out of the box. I've heard of people using the dock to calibrate, but I've personally never needed it, even for random rentals.
I never thought that would be the first thing I would comment on, but: 7:14 Steph looks fabulous in that dress! Plus, with a black belt in Taekwondo she can go straight into next James Bond movie :D
Great comparison. I would like to have seen you include the Z kit lens in this group. I have the Z7 with that lens and would like to see if it’s at all worth it to upgrade. Thanks.
I couldn’t imagine my Nikon 24-70 on my D850 being any sharper. Impressive performance from that Z mount lens. I hope Nikon releases a professional Z mount camera soon.
It's been a few years now since I bought my Tamron 24-70 2.8 when I first saw Matt's do a comparison review on the 24-70. LOVE THIS LENS and I would purchase another if ever I need to. Yes, I should maybe have it calibrated But I will say I have shot many a concert and many a model with this lens and on point every time unless operator error. Compared to my husband's Nikon 24-70 2.8 it to be well worth my investment. LOVE my lens and would not trade it for the price in which I purchased it at almost 1/2 the cost of the Nikon that was purchased and yes I would do it again. Oh and I believe it is the Tamron SP 24-70 F2.8.
William Avelar yep. I tried both and they performed fine. I probably slightly preferred the sigma that’s just me. I didn’t end up buying either of them. Ended up going for the Nikon 24-120mm f4 which focussed much faster and seemed to do better in general. Really like the range of it.
@@officialMainspring I'm thiking on the same lens, but how this perform for video? is too loud? can I autofocus and use the internal mics like I can do with the Z mount lenses? thanks for your reply will help me a lot!!!
@@ingjohnalfonso I do still photos only. I have tried it out on video and yes, you can hear it auto focus. it's not too loud but it's there. if you are doing video alot I'd suggest going with the S series Z mount from Nikon. bit more expensive but great lens, sharper then the Tamron edge to edge but most importantly, silent in vid... or as silent as you are gonna get right now. If you use outboard mic, it's no issue though so... IQ on the Tamron is amazing, especially for the price. good build, feels good in hand. love the lens.
The original SP 24-70mm Di Tammy has been my most used lens both in the studio and on location for the past 5 years. It been a fantastic bit of glass, however, it's soft at f/2.8 and I find I never step below f/3.2 because of this. Would you say the G2 is acceptably sharp at f/2.8?
I bought a Z6 two months ago and with it two Z lens, the 35 2.8 and 50 2.8. I just received the 24-70Z 2.8 and selling both my D4 and D5 to purchase the Z7. The Z line of lens and bodies are incredible, lightweight and much easier to lug around when doing location shoots.
@Matt Granger, question here. I have the Tamron 70-200 G2 and it is sooo damn easy to move the little switches unintentionally.. is this the same for the 24-70 G2? I hope Tamron fixed that already.. other than that I love my 70-200 but the switches drive me nuts.
Joel, I have both and this is my opinion. Because the 70-200 is so much longer, when I have it on the sling strap, it rubs my side and sometimes switches the VC on and off, or one of the other switches. Because the 24-70 is so much shorter, I haven't had that problem. The switches are practically identical though.
I have a 90D and recently bought a Sigma 18-35 1.8. At first not good at all but got the dock and now amazing. I had the Tamron 100-400 and just couldn't get consistent focus but didn't have their dock(Tamron dock $250, Sigma $115 here in NZ?) I am now looking at a 24-70 so not sure? I have the Canon 70-200iii which had to micro adjust at 70, now perfect and the Canon 100-400 which never needed anything.
Another, well balanced video, Matt. Though many of the products you feature are of no great interest to me, I really enjoy your reviews: and watch them from beginning to end.
Love your videos! Is the Tamron 24-70 first version(G1), still a good lens in 2019? Is the Nikon 24-70 non VR, still you’re favorite? I’m thinking about upgrading my 24-120 and looking at getting a used copy of a 24-70, either Tamron or the Nikon. Thanks
pretty fair based on what i've seen on the web too. I had to replace my Tamron G1 as it wasnt compatible with the Z6. Looked at the Tamron and the Sigma and both were close enough that finding a Sigma copy under warranty cheap 2nd hand took me down that path. I do have the dock (and other sigma glass) so that certainly helps too, reminds me to do a calibration!

Great video as always mate, I would love to see a tough low light comparison between Z7, D5, D850, Sony & Canon equivalents. And if the model comes back for the shoot I will put on the BBQ and get the beers ready.
Thanks for doing this Matt. I got the Tamron for $1K even during Black Friday and it performs wonderfully on my D850.I feel like I got quite a bargain.

I would have liked a little more comparison between the Tamron and Sigma. It's pretty obvious the Z lens will be in it's own class. The price difference between Tamron and Sigma is negligible since they go on sale frequently.
I really enjoyed this video and watching it again helped confirm that I made the right decision to buy the Tamron lens when I was looking to replace a much older Sigma 28-70 EX F2.8.
Nice comparison test, Matt, but why didn't you include the "kit" 24-70 f/4 NIkkor S (with all lenses @f/4??)? That would have been MOST interesting, since from all I've read, that 24-70 f/4 Nikkor S is super-sharp!
Just bought the Tamron version and it beats the Nikon G version hands down. Amazing price in the "Grey" market saving £400 over official retail shops for just under £700 a real bargain
So, I am in the market for my first 24-70mm, and I'm glad that this video offered me some guidance with that. But maybe I will have to hold out until Sigma brings out their Nikon Z-Mount Art Lenses for two reasons. The Nikon is beyond my budget and they just don't look sexy anymore.
I spent a lot of time researching these lenses last year. Ended up going with the Tamron G2. It did require quite a bit of time getting the autofocus calibrated (Tamron tap in console), but I find that it is a fantastic lens.
I know it was not part of this review, but do you feel the 24-70 f4 s kit lens is just as sharp as the tamron 24-70 f2.8? Trying to figure out the best route to go this fall when i get the Z7. Just get the body and tamron which is only a couple hundred more, or Z7 with that kit lens?
Nice review, always a joy to see Matt work with Steph. Just a limitation in the diversity of shots. Because of the lighting they will not bring out chromatic aberration nor flare and those to me are more important than the last bit of sharpness. If AF had problems staying locked on Steph in the red jacket, then I would also like to see what AF does when there are several people in the frame.
Would LOVE to see more comparisons between the f-mount lenses and z (s line) mount lenses! I have the Z6, but have yet to purchase a native Z lens because they are SO expensive. But if the quality of the f-mount ftz adapted lenses is COMPARABLE, considering the price of the z mount, to the z mount, I will stick around with Nikon. But Sony opening up their tech to sigma and tamron allowing for faster production of high quality Sony E Mount lenses has me wondering if I should convert to Sony.
Matt, I've tested also the image stabilization, Tamron VC performs much better than the others (except in body Z mount) , especially at longer focal length like 70mm.
Great head to head test, thank you, sir. I trust your judgement. Wouldn't you think that the Signal would come all fine tuned (for as much as lenses cost).? When I buy optics for my firearms, they come fine tuned. Makes me lean towards Tamron for my 70-200mm. Thank you again.
Dear Matt, I didn't find a link below and on your website I find the Nikkor Z and DSLR jpegs (from your previous comparison) but not those of Sigma n Tamron
good video. One thing I thought of not directlly related to the video but so many prople talk about setting everything manually but they use auto focus ?
I had a Sigma 18-35mm for crop and it was impossible to calibrate for my D7200. If I calibrated one set of distances to one focal length, it would offset at a different focal length so it was basically a prime lens with zoom functionality but you could only focus accurately at one focal length at a time. So I only used that lens with live view focusing mode and it was a bad experience. The images were sharp as hell but for anything other than tripod shooting or very slow handheld live view shooting it was useless.
Hi Matt, appreciated the video, but couldn't spot the link to download the files ? I also agree with you overall, I moved from Nikon original 24-70 non VR to Tamron 24-70 G2 when I got the D800, glad to know that when I go Z mount later on, the 24-70 F/2.8 is even better than what I have now, Cheers.
Nice review. The 24-70 f2.8 S is indeed amazing. One point I would have to clearly disagree is your comment about the 24-70 f2.8 G being better than the 24-70 f2.8 E VR. I have used both extensively and the E is a much better lens overall. The G is a tiny bit sharper in the center, but the corners of the E are in a different category, colors are nicer,...
Love your videos. I have a Nikon d750 and looking at either the a Nikon 24-70 non-VR or Tamron 24-70 G2. I do my Nikon glass. I’m worried about not having VR(the VR is out of my budget). Sometimes I’m not the steadiest, do you think not having VR would be an issue or should I just go with the Tamron G2? I shoot travel, landscapes and street, some night. Thank you
I have 24-70 nikon no vr 3 years, on nikon d700,d810,and d7000 dx camera, this is good lens but in some cases if the lens have vr I think the pictures will better that why sometime I have to use tripod...I mean if I have money I will upgrade to vr version
Great show BUT why would you have in the list the OLD Nikon F mount ? Your comparing and the latest new lenses so even though you own the old F mount you should still have had the new update F mount, it would have been more comparable
Great video! And I think that model (actor, martial arts specialist etc. :) is my favorite of all your models! But you didn’t put her channel in the notes. Don’t you usually do that? :)
i wish you would compare them all on the z camera. i shoot with z6 and D850. and i now use tamron g2. i was wondering of the new z24-70 but i like still being able to use my lens on both cameras
Good info for sure. Being a Canon shooter I don't like the idea of the Tamron's zoom/focus rings turning in the opposite direction as a Canon lens, but, perhaps I'll get used to it as the Tamron is an excellent lens....Thanks for the info Matt. BTW: I am 30 minutes by ferry from the Jersey Shore to NYC, so I may have to try that spot you shot at in NYC...
@@cantisanifotografo Thanks Joel, I appreciate the info. My friend has the 24-70 Tamron (1st generation) and he doesn't seem to mind either, so perhaps I am concerned for no reason. Thanks. BTW: I was hoping the Sigma ART 24-70 would do better as I have Sigma's 50mm ART and it's killer. Oh well....
hey Matt, I have always been a fan of yours, just a quick suggestion, consider changing the intro, it looks and sounds super old and boring, the drum rolls sounds very, I dunno, not fresh!

These Z Mount Nikkors are optically great. They will not age well though with delicate OLED displays. Pricey. The oldest 24-70 non-VR Nikkor is indeed the best on F Mount. The Tamron is impressive I have the 15-30 G2 and I’d seriously consider the 24-70 G2 big brother. I’d also pass on the Sigma.
Maybe anyone can help me with this: I have a sigma 24-70 ART. And i'm gonna buy a z6. I dont know wether to sell the sigma, and take the kit lens of the nikon,or just buy the z6 body w/ftz. Any opinion for this?
#AskMatt - Hi Matt. I've not owned an auto-focus lens except wayyyy back in the '90s, (a 70-210 Nikon lens [not the D variant] but I have no idea if it ever needed any form of calibration). I was wondering, what's all this need to calibrate the focusing on these newer auto focus lenses? Is it the autofocusing itself that's 'off' or is it something to do with focus distance or is it something else entirely? What should we know (calibration wise) prior to using a modern autofocus lens and why do they need calibrating?
Modern camera bodies let us be more precise. Focus adjustment on old bodies would be nice, but just wasn't feasible. Also as sensors become higher resolution, it gets easier to notice slightly missed focus, so adjustments are more useful.
Firstly the model is absolutely gorgeous!!! What a babe! Regards the lenses, obviously the Z is the best as its the most up to date set up with the mirror less camera which Nikon are really pushing. But really the price hike between that and the Tamron is definitely NOT worth it. Theres not a lot in picture quality to justify the outlay. If mirror less really takes off (and its still 50/50 as to whether it will) then in 2 or 3 years time there will be a lot more better and cheaper mirror less cameras and lenses. Myself I'll stick with the D850 & buy the Tamron lens, maybe two with the money saved.
Great review and each to their own, but flash photography during the day always makes me cringe. Im just not a fan of flash on a well balanced lighted day, it just feels so early 2000's.
For the sake of a perfect compare you could’ve put and FTZ on the z7 for image quality tests at the very least.
Good video - Would definitely appreciate a review of all these lenses with the Z6/Z7 and the FTZ.

It would have been interesting to compare the "kit" 24-70 f/4 in that group. There are many reasons to get a Z camera but the Z mount lenses is one of the most important. Same with the 14-30 f/4 Z mount compared to the more expensive 14-24 2.8. The 50mm 1.8 S is the sharpest lens I have ever seen in the mid focal lengths.
The Nikon Z mount lenses are looking unbeatable. Even the 24-70 F4 kit lens is crazy good. I might have to switch to Nikon.
Just got the Z7 with the Z 24-70 2.8S. This combo is absolutely amazing!!!
If you make the switch you won’t regret it.

Matt, may be to check them all with z7 + ftz?
I spent a lot of time researching these lenses last year. Ended up going with the Tamron G2. It did require quite a bit of time getting the autofocus calibrated (Tamron tap in console), but I find that it is a fantastic lens.
what camera are you using?
Canon 5D mark IV
The stabilization in the G2 lenses is seriously impressive.
Dino Draghi You tested the Tamron on the z body?
@@will_avelar , not yet, but my comment regards IBIS from Z series, wich in theory should perform equal or better than Lens stabilization. Tks!
Great video!
I can definitely vouch for the Sigma calibration needs. My Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 is off by a lot at both 17mm and at 50mm on my D7200.
Dear Matt, I didn't find a link below and on your website I find the Nikkor Z and DSLR jpegs (from your previous comparison) but not those of Sigma n Tamron
Assuming camera settings were exactly the same from body to body, it would seem the Tamron has a better T-stop? seems like a 1/3 stop brighter?
That is reportedly true, as confirmed by Dustin Abbott.
Had as well to calibrate my Tamron G2 with the dock, significant backfocus otherwise
The 24-70 F4 is perfect for travel.
that focus breathing at 70mm on third party 24-70 lenses is still a deal breaker for me.
Matt... what is that shirt? And where can I get it?
How the heck does some have almost $10k of deceased anything?!
As always you 3 you've done a great job!
Wich is the sharpest between tamron g2 and sigma art?
+Matt Granger, Yeah; What did happen to your D5? Wasn't this released in 2016?
If I remember right, it accidentally took a salt water bath.
Thumps up those who checked their own phones at 11:42… 😂
I like the "I'm going on an adventure!!!" jumps in the running scene Steph. :)
That model 😍
I dont see the link of the images comperison
Great show BUT why would you have in the list the OLD Nikon F mount ? Your comparing and the latest new lenses so even though you own the old F mount you should still have had the new update F mount, it would have been more comparable
Optically better
Never to old to be educated, thank matt
She's heavenly.
I am thinking to get the sigma with the FTZ to my Z6ii.
You should do a review on the Sigma sd Quattro H body. I know it is a few years old, but there are no good reviews on it.
Matt: hey Steph! Wanna help? BBQ after 😁
Steph: ok 😋
12 hours later...
Matt: alright Steph see you later.
Steph: woah! BBQ!? 🤨
Great video! And I think that model (actor, martial arts specialist etc. :) is my favorite of all your models! But you didn’t put her channel in the notes. Don’t you usually do that? :)
It was in great big letters on the screen. 🙂🦆
i wish you would compare them all on the z camera. i shoot with z6 and D850. and i now use tamron g2. i was wondering of the new z24-70 but i like still being able to use my lens on both cameras
I have the 70-200 G2 on my 5DIII.. no problem really getting used to how the rings work..
Oh well....
Hello Matt, when you turn on flash (or trigger) did your display exposure change?
What about using these 3 lenses on Z cameras?
See my recent 24-70 comparison 👍🏼
I hope you gave the poor girl her BBQ
hey Matt, I have always been a fan of yours, just a quick suggestion, consider changing the intro, it looks and sounds super old and boring, the drum rolls sounds very, I dunno, not fresh!
Maybe he also needs to have a change of Clothes, very dull look, no Class!!
@@dizzybuizzy9347 Lol ! and some exercise, he's getting fatter each day
Perfect timing as I was looking to get a 24-70 lens
Eugene Hernandez I am deaf, my story my dslr Camera my by somebody stolen, hope your help share for me and donate www.gofundme.com/f/kbk74p?+share-sheet&rcid=9e39d9d39ca54ff4840b15fb20d194e0
Can I use AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED on my Nikon D5600?
Yes
Can someone tell me in what part of NYC was made that amazing photographic session? Thanks in advance!
Williamsburg
@@mattgranger thanks a lot!
"It's stiffer - but reassuringly so."
I get all my best Tinder lines from lens review videos.
The tripod with the flash seemed so unsteady 😳
These Z Mount Nikkors are optically great. They will not age well though with delicate OLED displays. Pricey. The oldest 24-70 non-VR Nikkor is indeed the best on F Mount. The Tamron is impressive I have the 15-30 G2 and I’d seriously consider the 24-70 G2 big brother. I’d also pass on the Sigma.
Where is the link to the files?
Great balanced honest video, thanks
Firstly the model is absolutely gorgeous!!! What a babe! Regards the lenses, obviously the Z is the best as its the most up to date set up with the mirror less camera which Nikon are really pushing. But really the price hike between that and the Tamron is definitely NOT worth it. Theres not a lot in picture quality to justify the outlay. If mirror less really takes off (and its still 50/50 as to whether it will) then in 2 or 3 years time there will be a lot more better and cheaper mirror less cameras and lenses. Myself I'll stick with the D850 & buy the Tamron lens, maybe two with the money saved.
shes got a beautiful smile : )
Great review and each to their own, but flash photography during the day always makes me cringe. Im just not a fan of flash on a well balanced lighted day, it just feels so early 2000's.
How does Z7 with ftz adapter works with tamron 24-70 f2.8 g2.... I found no good video regarding this....please reply... planning to buy one for my Z6
I found that video only

I freaking love my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2...
does it work well with the nikon z6 mate? how does it compare to the Nikon 24-70 F4s lens in terms of sharpness and lens distortion?
Shane Hordagoda any luck ?
So did you guys get BBQ?
The Z lenses are just shockingly good in every regard.
