I had both the 24-70 and the 28-70 ( L mount) and the 28-70 is amazing for traveling. Super light and just wide enough to capture interesting landscapes. I paired it with my Sigma FP and its a dream combo.
I own both Sigma 28-70mm , 24-70mm lenses. The 24- 70 is bigger than the 28-70mm I have. They both offer sharp pic.s with great color. Yet I favor the 28-70mm as I shoot SeaScapes ! This lens seem ideal for slowing motion of water ! It's small to maneuver through gate holes taking pic.s . Yet both are great for traveling light / compact ! Place a CPL or ND on either and watch the magic at work ! You won't be disappointed !! Good Luck !!!
Just got the new sigma after previously owning the 24-70 a year ago. Size and weight difference are massive improvements and I don’t notice the image quality difference. Compact size and weight are well worth purchasing this for a standard zoom.
I bought the Tamron 28-75 and I've been more than happy with it. The price, the amazing image quality and light-weight is brilliant, especially for travelling.
I have the Tamron already and was so scared the Sigma was going to put it to shame. Glad to see how far along these things have come. Can’t really go wrong with any of these lenses. Awesome video!
It’s not about The best but which one is the best for your needs. I used the Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 several times on set and many other shootings. Insane quality but so heavy. Sigma 28-70 is perfect for traveling and dynamic projects. Sigma Art weighs almost twice as much as Sigma Contemporary. Keep in mind!
I agree! It’s always about what works best for you, I try to always lay out my reviews(including this one) with that in mind, hence the conclusion that lays out the pros and cons of each lens. Glad you agree!
I’ve had the Tamron in the past, and its awesome, compact, and has great autofocus. Now l own the 24-70 Art, and l think it’s great. The build quality is really what drew me to it. But... it is insanely heavy if you’re used to primes or Tamrons lenses. Just something to adapt your gear and yourself to!
If IQ was the same I'd love to take the Sigma 28-70, but there was a noticeable difference between the art and contemporary. Excellent review. I'll go with the heavier and extra 4mm on the art. Thanks.
I have the Sigma 24-70 and think it's great. Two big advantages: I do think it's nice to have a professional looking lens if you're doing some professional shooting. Your client seems to feel more comfortable having hired you if your gear looks serious, haha. The Sigma Art looks like it was expensive! And yeah, it's just nice to have a 24mm. I travel a lot and I think I would miss 24mm if I didn't have it on my standard zoom. Sometimes you want to shoot a building, or shoot your friends/family in front of a building or some vast scenery, and 24mm does the trick. 28mm will often prove too tight for that kind of shot.
I agree, even though we know what our gear is capable of in a smaller foreign factor, clients just always like to see a bigger more expensive looking lens lol. Just makes them feel like we're more professional.
Love your take on 2 points: 1. How would this review be affected by the newer version of the Tamron 28-75? 2. In the same sense, how's this affected by how cheap the older (reviewed here) Tamron is in the used market compared to the other 2?
Great review! I've had the Sigma 24-70 Art since two years, and while I do find it heavy sometimes, I really like that lens. I don't think I'm going to change it! I'd love to see a similar review on Sigma 14-24 vs 16-28 vs Tamron 17-28. Thank you!
Love the Sigma 24-70, it's such a beautiful lens, its my workhorse lens for pretty much every job. However, it is a bit cumbersome when just going out for a bit of fun. May have to consider picking up the Sigma 28-70 as a more walk around lens with little compromise incase the situation arises where I'd want a decent lens.
One thing regarding build quality you didn't mention that could be important to some: Tamron is weather sealed, Contemporary lens only has a mount gasket but is otherwise not sealed.
Yeah I didn’t get into the nitty gritty of that because I always find the documentation to be a bit vague but Tamron does mention that they’ve got several points of sealing compared to the contemporary being at the mount. Thanks for the extra addition!
What the heck! I've been following you for ever, and just now noticed that I was not subscribed!! Quickly remediated that! Great video, exactly what I wanted to know. That Sigma 28-70 on an A7c would be a sweet one-body-one-lens travel setup....when we are allowed out of our caves eventually! lol
I saw 5 choose for my A7C: -Sony 24-105 (too much slow); -sigma 24-70 (too much expensive and heavy); -Sigma 28-70 (brand new 800/850€) -Tamron 28-75 G2 (brand new similar price of sigma - a little bit more expensive); -Tamron 28-75 Rxd (..... 500€ pre-owned......). What do you think I'have chosen? :)
I have the Sony f4 24-105 and am about to take it back getting the art lens. Great review. My eyes see a better picture in the art all around thank you for the review!
So for someone trying to decide between the two, would you say the size and weight factor isn't that bad and worth it if I go with the Sigma? For traveling around and regular usage?
It will depend on your comfort level. It's definitely a heavier lens, but it never really bothers me. That said, my opinion is probably a little askew because I also frequently carry the 100-400GM so when I carry the Sigma it's doesn't seem that heavy.
@@alchemist_x79 Ok gotcha... Thanks for the input! I actually just saw sigma released a new-ish lens comparable to the tamron in size and price. I may have to check that one out as well.
This video was perfectly timed for me! I just switched to Sony from Canon a couple of months ago, and still have my Sigma 24-70 EF lens that I was planning on adapting in case I had second thoughts about Sony. I was really agonizing over whether to sell it and I think, that I'm going to go for it. I always found it too big and heavy (I'm 5'1") and from what you've said, I think that either of the budget options would be a great fit for me. I didn't even know about the new Sigma until now too, so thanks so much!
Great video and you sure don't mess around. Most reviewers would take twice as long to cover the same material (and often cover less). Subscribed right away.
Hello Dunna. Thanks for all the great information, it really helps me to make a decision for my A7C. I am leaning toward the Sigma 28-70 to match the smaller A7C body. Also, I could swear you were taking a photo of my bookshelf with the same titles of my most beloved books! I just got done reading The Wise Man's Fear for the third time. Take Care!
@@theTranscendentOnes I am happy with it so far...I like the range it offers. So far the pictures look great. I wouldn't say they are as crisp as my 20 mm g, but still really nice. The only thing I am not a huge fan of is the 28mm...I do wish it was 24mm

I sold my Sony 24-105 f4 ( which is a really great lens) to buy the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. Haven’t regretted it, actually I bought the sigma over the Sony 24-70 GM. Super satisfied with the Sigma and what it produces. Great video about these three lenses and have to agree with you on the 24-70 being the best choice for me, I like the build quality, the weight, all of it😃✌🏼
Dam it I might sell my Sony 24-105 too. I tested the sigma about a week ago and fell in love with it. Also tested the Tamron 70-200 (was not a fan) vs the sigma. They didn’t have the tamron 28-70 on hand
Making beautiful images and having a photographic inspiration, never depends on small technical analyses and its tiny differences . As a professional photographer for 30 years, my speech is filled with this certainty !...
Just puased it at the time u said to puase and i gotta say u helped me with my delma of choosing a mid range lens for street. So i think the 28-70 sigma performs better. Thank u
I really LOVE all the Sigma ART lenses since i bought the old 35mm f1.4 DG HSM, the old, adapted dslr version haha. Thinking about selling this one, get de 35mm 1.4 DG DN and after that i guess it will be the allround "most of the time" 24-70 from sigma because.... like i said, love the art lenses! Also like the lens flare even if it is actually "worse" then the other 2, you can be creative with it!
Hows is eye AF in dim or lowlight environment? Sometimes even with GM glass, it doesn't catch it or loses the eyes so I'm curious if it's even more prevalent in third party glass
I’ve never noticed any difference in that case between Sony and third party glass. I think actually finding the eye has more to do with the sensor/processor than the lens itself.
I got the Tamron for my wife who is just starting to get into photography. It was the weight difference and finding it in pristine condition on ebay that sold me of the three.
I just recently picked up the Sigma 28-70. As awesome as the 24-70 Art is, I didn't want the added bulk and have to get a bigger camera bag.. I've long wanted the Tamron 28-75 but when I saw the Sigma 28-70 was almost the same size as my Sony 24-70/4, takes the same filters and has better image quality it seemed like a no brainer. Time will tell how much I'll miss the 4mm on the wide end, but I have the Sony 28/2 and love shooting with it so it might be OK.
Would you suggest 28-70 for talking-head youtube videos? or still, recommend 24-70? I have watched like 100+ reviews and in all videos, 24-70 is superior (for obsious reasons) but they mostly talk about professional work. I need a lens for talking-head videos and sometimes for portraits. Would you recommend 28-70? or should I just increase my budget and get 24-70?
For me who is getting started filming car commercials and races among other stuff, I need a slightly wide lens as well as a tight focal length. So for me, the Tamron is the best option because of that extra 5mm. Honestly think 28 is more than enough for me in the wide angle territory
I was going between tamron and sigma 24-70. But I had 4 copies of Sigma with issues- the last one sucking in dust into it like a vacuum cleaner. Also sigma Art is way too big and too heavy for a casual shooter who wants to carry the camera around without primarily focusing on photography. So I gave up and have no mid range zoom for a while, using tamron 17-28, 35 1.8 or one of the vintage 50s. Now with the new sigma out I really want to try it out- smaller than tamron, better build- very intriguing. If only they had a function button instead of focus switch. But yeah, If it has no issues of the original Art lens- it might be a keeper.
Nice video. Very comprehensive. One word of advice, though...you may want to revisit your "stills" autofocus methodology. Tap focus on the LCD is as effective in determining autofocus performance for stills as a written driving exam is at predicting how good a driver one will actually be. I won't mention any names (Samyang 35mm f/1.4 Gen 1), but there are plenty of lenses out there that show promise with your test, but end up producing less than acceptable results. In all seriousness, when testing a wide aperture lens, you really should put the camera in continuous focus with center autofocus point and quickly pivot the camera between two subjects at different distances, while taking pics at each movement. You may then have a subject walking/running at you, while shooting a burst, to see what the keeper rate is. Just my two cents.
Only reason why I didn’t go with the 24-70 is just so heavyyyyy haha specially for on the go vlogging, I use my 28-75 tamron or the 20mm tamron for the vlogging but if I only want to bring one I bring that 28-75 and I’ve enjoyed it honestly. Not as wide with 28, but I can make it work haha
Really appreciate your effort, this review helped me a lot. Keeping my preferences in mind I will be going for Sigma 28-70mm lens❤🎉 (though I love ART lens more😅)
My wife gave me a Sigma 35 f1.2 for my birthday. Very cool lens, but super heavy. Now I'm looking at the Contemporary series. I hope Sigma can make whole line of Contemporary zoom-lenses. Thanks for video)
I was really surprised at how minimal the quality gap between the two Sigma lenses is. Since I have the Sony A7C, I'm more apt to get the Sigma 28 to retain the small and light form factor. Thanks for making this an easy get!
Great job! I do like the size of the Sigma Contemporary but I am very satisfied with the ouput of my Tamron so no need to switch , even for the weight savings, I think. Thank you for doing such a comprehensive comparison. I have to say your condo looks very bright , airy and tidy!
I wouldn't switch any of them for any of them if I already owned one... if that makes sense. They're all great and the difference wouldn't be worth the effort of selling and buying. This coming from an Art owner.
Hey Dunna, is it possible, that you make a comparison between the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2? This would be really nice and healthful. Thanks 😊
All lenses now a days seem to just so darn good. Like if price wasn’t a factor I think it’d just boil down to personal preference over all the little things. IE. fit and finish, the feel, the direction of the zoom ring, etc Having said all that, I’d go with (and have gone with) the Sigma 24-70. It’s unreal, I love the beefier construction, and I need to convince myself the price was worth it. Love the video, glad I found it, and I definitely subbed. 👍🏻
I'm trying to decide between the two. So it was that bothersome that you decided to switch? Are you happy with that decision and can't really tell the difference now? Or do you notice the differences?
@@DavidChiriboga the two major factors are the weight and the wide end. You have to decide if you need that wide end and if you’re willing to bear the burden to have it. I wanted the 24mm but the weight killed it for me
The Tamron is a great lens, but I hate its focus ring. It's thin, on the wrong side of the lens, and is not linear. Decided to put up with the extra weight of the Sigma instead.
Thanks for the review. Would you still choose the Sigma 28-70mm as the budget lens over the newer Tamron 28-75mm G2? My priorities are size/weight (so the larger Sigma is out) and action AF / Sharpness. I already have the 1st gen 28-75mm. Thanks again.
Hello Dunna, thank you for this video, I've watched it many times but now I'm gonna upgrade my Sony 28-70 kit lens with one of these. I mainly do landscapes and some portraits, which one should I buy for weather sealing and image quality ?
I am still undecided about these three lenses. Unfortunately in lockdown and not able to feel and see in store. Probably tending more towards the smaller two lenses. What was not mentioned here regarding the build quality but is mentioned elsewhere is that not as much weather sealed. This is a minus on the build quality if you ask me, even when not planning to take it out into the rain.
You’re right! I read that they were both weather sealed but it turns out that the Tamron is weather sealed in more places. The sigma is just on the mount.
Great video. I’m in the market for exactly this, a fast mid-range zoom lens for video purposes with an A7Siii. Currently weighing between the Sigmas and the Sony G Master (of course much more expensive). This definitely helps!
I just rented the Gmaster for this long weekend, and damn it pairs with my 6600 stupidly well (but heavy as). The photos were just tasty....would be curious to see the G against the tam and SIG's for sure....may be renting those two to figure that out lol
Really struggling to decide between buying the Sigma Contemporary and the Art. Buy now and have to use for current projects or wait and use FE 50mm 1.8 until I can save the extra $500.
Love the reviews thanks so much! question I am leaning towards the Sigma24-70 because of the extra 4 mm however I am thinking to use this lens in a gimbal and (DJI RC2) and was wondering because is the heaviest of the 3 if that would be a problem when changing the focal length causing troubles and having to rebalance the gimbal every time I change focal length ( I have heard with the Tamron because is very light you don't need to rebalance it ) any thoughts would be very appreciate it :)

@@dunnadidit Ahh, I see. Thanks man.
Thanks a ton for all the work you put into this video. It helped me out in deciding a ton! Take it easy.
Are you kidding Dunna you beauty! I’ve been searching for this very comparison this morning and lo behold it comes up in my subs! 🙌
I live to serve!
Best comparison review ever, gonna be saving for the 24-70 sigma, thank you much.
Great video, very helpful!
Great video, as always. Like the humour in addition to the informative content. 👍
Great job, dude! Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much! This is very helpful for choosing my first sony FE lens!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review and presentation. Thanks for sharing! Size and weight is important to me so I’ll be buying the Sigma 28-70.
Amazing review! Really in depth and informative, thank you!
What new sigma are you referring to?
I hear that!
Really appreciate your effort, this review helped me a lot. Keeping my preferences in mind I will be going for Sigma 28-70mm lens❤🎉 (though I love ART lens more😅)
Thanks dude, this is a really helpful video.
Thank you so much. Great review.
My wife gave me a Sigma 35 f1.2 for my birthday. Very cool lens, but super heavy. Now I'm looking at the Contemporary series. I hope Sigma can make whole line of Contemporary zoom-lenses. Thanks for video)
Video quality is consistently improving. Awesome video, Dunna!
awesome review dude
Excellent! Exactly what I needed.
Been using the Tamron 28-75 for a while and I'm loving it!
Nice!
I was really surprised at how minimal the quality gap between the two Sigma lenses is. Since I have the Sony A7C, I'm more apt to get the Sigma 28 to retain the small and light form factor. Thanks for making this an easy get!
Nice!!
I think that 28-70 was made specifically for the a7c
The same for me, I've just bought a7c with Sigma c and loving it.
OMG The song is stuck in my head! what is it please?
Amazing video, helped me more than you know
Glad to hear it!!
Just purchased the 24-70. Can’t wait to test myself.
Hey Dunna, is it possible, that you make a comparison between the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2? This would be really nice and healthful.
Thanks 😊
Just ordered the 24-70 art lens! Can’t wait to get my hands on it and test it out for myself!
All lenses now a days seem to just so darn good. Like if price wasn’t a factor I think it’d just boil down to personal preference over all the little things. IE. fit and finish, the feel, the direction of the zoom ring, etc
Having said all that, I’d go with (and have gone with) the Sigma 24-70. It’s unreal, I love the beefier construction, and I need to convince myself the price was worth it. Love the video, glad I found it, and I definitely subbed. 👍🏻
Great test Duna. Thank you 😊
Right on time for me.
Still thinking what best for me .
Still 📸events most of the time but wanna push more for video...🎥
Had the Art but switched over to the Tamron cause the Art was so fkn heavy.
Yup
Same
I'm trying to decide between the two.
I wanted the 24mm but the weight killed it for me
@@jaikavi5464 Ok thanks for the input! I’ll have to get my hands on one to find out I guess.
Would you rather consider the Sigma 28-70 2.8 or the 17-70mm Tamron with much better focal Length and Vibration Control for Sony a6400?
For apsc, I’d go 17-70
@@dunnadidit thank you!
Awesome review!
Thanks!
Bro, That was a damn good video, exactly what i was looking for!
Great review, Thanks a lot
I love this review thanks ! Yes i subscribed ! Very funny !
Wow. Increíble comparativa. Txs!! Suscrito😎👌
Thank you for this comparison as i am in the market for a zoom lens!
Interesting video and great moustache.
Super helpful man thank you!
What a nice comparison. Im subbed for this!
Great video. I’m in the market for exactly this, a fast mid-range zoom lens for video purposes with an A7Siii. Currently weighing between the Sigmas and the Sony G Master (of course much more expensive). This definitely helps!
Glad to hear it was helpful. I would have loved to include the g-master but couldn’t get my hands on one in time
I just rented the Gmaster for this long weekend, and damn it pairs with my 6600 stupidly well (but heavy as). The photos were just tasty....would be curious to see the G against the tam and SIG's for sure....may be renting those two to figure that out lol
I have the ART lens, but I never use it, I just prefer primes. the lens is fine, but I shoot portraits at sunrise and sunset, I like 1.2-1.8 primes.
Really struggling to decide between buying the Sigma Contemporary and the Art. Buy now and have to use for current projects or wait and use FE 50mm 1.8 until I can save the extra $500.
Great Video thank you for the tips
thanks still undecided which one. i do portraits and videos... i want to know also which one performs well in low light . ?
BTW overall good review very concise.
