    On focus breathing, importnant to notice Matt that the field of view distortion of Canon is opposite comparing to the other two.
    So actually, when focusing in close at 200mm with the Canon, you're actually getting "closer" to the subject, which is great for head shots.

    • @marcromodevivar
      @marcromodevivar 8 лет назад +2

      in fact is a lot better thanks to that!
      Nikon and Tamron in closest focus at 200mm you get about 135 to 140mm,
      in Canon, in fact at closest focus you get true 200mm
      so do the math, when you are taking a portrait o a head shot, the amoun of bokeh at true 200mm 2.8 vs 135mm at 2.8 you will get almost the double of bokeh at 200! :D

    If I understand what you're saying, that's called depth of field, the distances before and after the subject in which other stuff will be in focus too. This depends on focal lenth, keeping aperture, focusing distance and sensor size the same. The visual effect being the amount of focus or bluriness.

    3:00 maybe I missed it but why does the Nikkor have that terrible colors? Is that the camera, a cloudy moment or what else?

    • @airjaff
      @airjaff 9 лет назад

      Canon is just better for video. Have a look at other videos taken by a nikon, there is a green hue to all these nikon videos

    • @agoniavr
      @agoniavr 9 лет назад +6

      airjaff The D750 has been said by many to be far superior in the image to the MK3, I know "Canon is better" is a common saying and that may still hold for cheaper-medium ranges but the Sony sensor on the more recent higher end cameras smokes away Canon anyway.
      I know most people are still shooting Canon and will keep doing so but again, if you watch comparisons between the D750 and the MK3 the Canon wins in almost nothing, even Jordan from TheCameraStore(which REALLY knows what he's doing) doesn't think of a single area where he would recommend the MK3 after the D750 release...and even the D810 is better of course.

    • @agoniavr
      @agoniavr 9 лет назад +3

      ***** thanks for agreeing, I mean sure the 5DMK3 has been the standard for a while but right now it got REALLY old, don't get why people get so defensive about the stuff they like when they're clearly outperformed.
      Technology advances fast, why holding back?

    • @77appyi
      @77appyi 9 лет назад

      +AndreCorner strange .. ist you notice Nikon has terrible colours (matts D810)then you say the Sony sensor "smokes" the canon ermmm ...well how is the Nikon smoking the canon with its terrible colours ???

    • @agoniavr
      @agoniavr 9 лет назад +5

      david appleton it's two separate things plus you red it wrong. I said the NIKKOR, not Nikon, displayed terrible colours and I'm talking about this lens compared to the other two.
      That being said I also mentioned Sony sensors being way better in general but again, it's a separate thing :)

    I shoot with a Nikon D800 and previously had the Sigma 70-200 OS HSM. After doing my own comparison with the Tamron 70-200 VC, I traded the Sigma for the Tamron. I find the Tamron to be much sharper from 70-200, and the Vibration Control to be more effective. It also has weather sealing, which the Sigma lacks. It is a bit more expensive, but worth it, in my opinion.

    hello how are you, Matt
    one question.
    Which is more sharper, I do not mind vignetting or build quality, I just want good resolution, sharp images, ( canon vsTamron)
    I can fix the vignetting in lightroon
    so the more sharper, clear glass

  • @crocellian2972

    Really nice and gutsy work. Thank you.
    I am so sick of hearing about "focus breathing" based solely, exclusively, and totally on one person's subjective measure of their own work flow I could puke. People just make up "tests" based on vapor and then rate lenses on MUST HAVE basis. It makes me sick.
    Everyone uses gear differently. Any "tests" based on one kind of work flow are nothing but hindsight justifications for bad choices made in the past.
    You did a good job. You will be savaged.

  • @adziuaoeu
    @adziuaoeu 10 лет назад +2

    Focus breathing is heavily influenced by the minimum focus distance, which is closest in canon 1.20m compared to 1.40m in nikon and 1.30m in Tamron. (Nikon user BTW)

  • @Mp57navy
    @Mp57navy 11 лет назад +4

    The vignetting is neglectable on a crop sensor Camera for the Tamron. Might want to take this into account for enthusiast rating.

  • @josh885
    @josh885 11 лет назад

    Basically which lens to choose comes down to whether less vignetting and a focus limiter switch is worth $1000 to you. If they are get the Canon/Nikon version and if they aren't get the Tamron which is close enough the Nikon/Canon versions in all other areas that it will never make a noticeable difference in the final image unless you are pixel peeping at 100% and directly comparing them.

  • @dihein
    @dihein 11 лет назад

    Its the term for how the image changes in size depending on where the focal plane is. See how on the Canon the image seems to zoom in when he turns the focus ring? Its important when shooting video since you frequently change focus but want to keep the same composition of your frame.

  • @vikdaddy
    @vikdaddy 11 лет назад

    @Windbringer, the Tamron scored 4.29 but got 4.25 rounded down, the Nikkor got 4.33 but was rounded up to 4.5... it doesn't seem fair to round one down and one up when both are closer to 4.25!

    Hey Aeiq1219, yes the 70-200 lens for the Nikon systems will work on your D3100 even with autofocus. As long as the lens says that it's an AF-S lens, it has the motor built into the lens so it will work on your camera. Also you won't be disappointed with any of the 70-200 series of lenses both the f2.8 VR II and the F4 VR II versions are incredible for performance.

    Hey MrNuri21,
    sorry for not replying earlier, had issues with my new 5D3 and had to send it back, therefore i could not test the Tamron 70-200 until last sunday when i shot a wedding with it. Best real-world testing you can get... :) I have to say i am really pleased with the results, good sharpness even at 2.8, good micro contrast and nice color rendition. The vignetting at 200mm/2.8 is quite heavy as matt mentioned but its not an issue for me and f4 ist much better already.

    Thank you Jessica. I had made another comment. About Tamron making it possible for newbies or wannabees having a chance to get their foot in the door with the Tamron. It is hard enough putting together a pro kit or semi-pro kit these days. With that price and their foot in the door, they can actually start something which in turn will allow them to earn enough for top of the line- in time.

    I've enjoyed all 4 of these, and I thank you for your work and time you invested in them. Personally, I have been leaning toward the Sigma, but now, having seen a lot about the Tamron, it gives me another lens to consider. It will likely take me another 6 months or so to get all "saved up" for the purchase, so maybe during that time you might be able to give some feedback on the Sigma. I'm a Canonite, so I probably will never buy a Nikon lens. However, your information is ALL valuable. Thanks

    Excellent, that half point Tamron lost on focussing ring. I was just wondering if that should be grouped with build. It is design after all. And the vignetting in image quality, just another notch on PS to correct I think. In any case very clear what it what. Thanks.

    interesting vignetting rating on the Tamron. Sharper than the others, which would make you think higher image quality. I've seen the Canon has trouble with random colors being through the photos. Seems a little biased towards the big name lenses. Just my opinion though, I'll be getting the Tamron, has the same if not more to offer than the others (with a lesser build quality) and it's almost half the price.

    The EF 75-300 was and still is a damn good lens.

    I own the 70-200 tamron and its not great for anything besides portraits. The Autofocus is not the best its slow and "clunky" compared to both the Canon and the Nikon. Its a superlens for low budgets but not great if its your soul and income. Just that you can pick up this and its smaller brother 24-70 VC for the same price as the canon or nikon is great for anyone that just want some fun. Whats your take on the focusing of the Tamron being only 50-150ish mm?

  • @elektrikheat

    I'd probably hit up the f/4 - I can't seem to justify the 2.8 unless you're gonna go pro/absolutely need the low light. The VR on the F4 is also a generation ahead and offers an extra stop of compensation.

    Tony Northup focus breathing results are different. At minimum focus distance comparing Canon, Nikon, and Tamron 70-200mm lenses, only Canon is true 200mm and Nikon and Tamron are at 150mm. Canon give photographers a 50mm focal length / focus breathing advantage over both Nikon and Tamron.

      Tony made his "tests" up based on hi personal work flow. At least he had guts to admit it. Many thumbs up to Tony.
      It is the bozos out there that don't admit that their tests are pulled from their personal use (i.e. their butts), that make me sick.
      I spent years aligning lasers and complex lens systems to do photochemistry at nanosecond time scales. Believe me, there is no definition of lens breathing.

  • @ousi00
    @ousi00 10 лет назад

    Hmmm, what I look for is focusing speed mostly in those lenses. Even if you have the best sharpness but without the speed to focus the decisive moment you will have a very hard time especially shooting high speed sports. I traded my Tamron (excellent image) for a Canon simply because of this. Try it on a 1-series body and you'll see the difference right the way.
    For portrait or anything that doesn't move much, I'd go for a prime which is much cheaper, sharper and brighter (aperture).

    Really enjoyed this series! Overall, I appreciate your field-based approach, honesty, enthousiasm and humor (sometimes a bit quirky, but please stay true to yourself ;)
    In part 3 you mentioned addressing the true focal range in your 4th video, as the Tamron in particular is rumored to have a 70-186mm true focal range. Unfortunately I missed this item in the 4th video.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, the Tamron, or the Nikon f/4 version, which has no focus breathing issues. I know each lens has its pros and cons beyond focus breathing, but what's the leaning factor, price? Build quality? Ect... Any useful input would be appreciated.

    Awesome review especially since you rated it in 2 different categories. I think for the majority of people they fall in the prosumer range and don't make a living off it their photos. The Tamron at over $1000 cheaper sure allows you to use that extra money to create a small studio or towards another lens.

    This is really interesting - guys like Tony Northrup mention how much closer the Canon lens is at close 'tight headshot' lengths and looking at the focus breathing test you did - it appears that the canon is the only lens which magnifies the closer it focuses rather than de-magnifying (if that's the correct term). In the side by side comparison it's easy to see that the focus breathing is 'reversed' on the canon allowing a much tighter headshot.

    Tony northrup said that the canon doesn't have focus breathing. Very interesting that he missed this one. The focus breathing is interesting because only on the canon the closer you focus the more magnification you get. Tamron and nikon seem to have a different design.

    I noticed the Canon seems to focus a lot closer (well I'm assuming so by the greater blur). Could this be one of the causes for the larger focus breathing? Does it really breath that much more if you focus between two identical differences between lenses rather than just closest and furthest?

    ..shot with the Canon & Tamron. The Tamron is sharper. Of course copies, AFs, MA all factors in but at the end Tamron is a game changer. It does the same or better job as the Canon for much less & instead of spending on a label & white paint I can spend on lights and other important stuff. The vignetting is there but LR automatically fix it.

    I'd like to see zoom lenses rated on the feel of the zoom ring, along with all of your other criteria. You mention the focus ring. Many lenses have a smooth zoom ring that you can turn with one finger. This is true of the Canon lenses I own, but not for the Tamron 24-70. I considered returning that lens because of the stiff zoom ring.

    I just pulled the trigger and brought the Tamron, large in part from your vids. What I would have liked to have seen (very difficult I know) is the Tamron rated against Nikkor and Canon V1 versions. Seeing as though one might be skeptical to buy Tamron because its third party, people may consider older just because its brand. this would give them an idea if its worth it to go old brand or new third party... If that makes sense..

    This is interesting, the Canon actually looks like it "breathes longer" when focusing close while the others actually show less overall change to shorter lengths?
    Bad weather weekend coming, time for some test shooting with my Nikon ☺

    I have the Tamron 24-70 and it is an awesome lens. I think I will go for the Tamron in the 70-200 but I am just wondering about extension tubes, will this lens be compatible with Canon tubes?

    Hi, I have a queston about the Tamron, I've been looking at some videos in RUclips and there's a problem that caight my eye, some people claim that there is a play between the body and the lens that can actually make the camera have a false contact with the lens, did you experiment something like that?, if so, does tamron offers a solution for it?
    Thank you very much.
    Best regards.

    What would you choose between the Nikon 70-200 f/2,8 VR (first version) and the tamron / sigma? Looking to buy a second hand Nikon, rather than the sigma / tamron.

    could you do a video on how to change the color settings on your nikon to make it look more like a canon does out of the camera? I've already invested a lot into nikon, and I love it, and I do love the editing process...BUT sometimes, clients want that punchy more "edited" look in the middle of the shoot to give them confidence.

    Newbie question but the vig problems the Tamron has on a full frame would pretty much disappear on a crop sensor right? I shoot a 60D and desperately need something with a constant aperture since I shoot motorsports (drifting mostly) and am changing focal length as I pan my shots

    • @WillEagleton
      @WillEagleton 10 лет назад

      Vignetting should be almost non-existent and is correctable anyway, keep in mind you need to multiply by 1.6 though since your a Canon owner - I guess thats good since you're shooting long distance autosports stuff.

    Hi. I have just begun photography with a Canon 700D. Currently I have the 55-250mm kit lens. It's very slow though. The auto focus takes its own sweet time. Which other telephoto would you suggest on my crop sensor? Also, how fast would the auto focus be compared to the kit lens again keeping in mind my crop sensor camera body ?

      +Sarthak Agarwal Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD, you can find it used on B&H for 300 (9 out of 10)... see Matt review about this lense as well.

      I have the 70D and the 55-250 STM, and that combination is amazingly fast when there is light enough. In low light a 2.8 lens will always be faster - that's what you are paying for.

    Can i ask, If you shot the Canon and the Tamron from the same point at the same focal range , ie, 200mm , would you get a identical area of coverage ? I ask because i have seen a video where the Canon is tighter at 20mm than the Tamron which is slightly wider so you would have to move in slightly to get the same result... Thanks !

    Is it possible to do a which manufacturer makes the best 70-200 F/4? Because i find it unlikely that many beginning photographers can go the F/2.8 route unless they go for pre-owned lenses.

    What about the Sigma 70-200 2.8. I've been searching for a focus breathing test and have yet to find one. So far Canon has the rest beat. Im wondering what sigma looks like. For the price it could be a steal. Do you have any info on that ?
