Thanks to those of you correcting me on the image stabilization in the 24-70 f/2.8. The f/2.8 versions from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma Art do have IS. The two Canon 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't - however, the f/4 version does. My bad ;)
In this day of mirrorless cameras handling higher ISO so well I don't need a 24-70 2.8 anymore! I now use a Sony 24-105 f4 for nearly all my travel shots and it's awesome. Anyone saying otherwise is full of it
The Sony 24-70 f2.8 does not have image stabilization, but such an expensive lens would be used on one of the Sony bodies that has IBIS stabilization, so not really an issue. However, the Sony 24-105 is my workhorse lens. Thanks for the video.
I think this episode with the array of pictures clearly demonstrates that its how you use the lens to maximum effect to get the desired results and you clearly demonstrated Mads, the capabilities of the 24-105mm. Always a pleasure seeing your previous images when you combine them into an episode of this sort
While everyone must decide what gear works best for them, I agree that the 24-105 is a workhorse. It was my go-to lens for walking around and traveling with one lens for 20 year when I shot Canon (24-105 f/4 L). When I moved to Sony last year, the 24-105 was the first lens I bought. Yes, I use plenty of other lenses when I know what I am going to be shooting and can plan the look I want, or have a pack full of kit to haul around, but I can walk out the door with the 24-105 confident that I will be able to capture a well framed, well exposed shot in almost any situation I am likely to encounter. Of course, if I was going out to shoot sports, this would not be the lens I would take. I have always owned 24-70 f2.8 as well, but I rarely use it. Like you, I find that I miss the extra reach when I am using the 24-70 far more often than I miss the extra stop when using the 24-105. These choices work for me. Your mileage may vary.
The Canon RF 24-105 is a great street photography lens for Portland and the Pacific Northwest. It’s amazing how often 28mm isn’t quite wide enough and 85mm isn’t long enough. With 24-105, rarely do I find myself wanting a different lens.
Absolutely agree. The 24-105 is always on the camera when hiking to a location or touring a city. Love the versatility without changing lenses and the loss of one stop of the 24-70 f/2.8 has never meant a great deal to me. Especially Panos! So literally all of your reasons here really resonate with my photography and approach. Funny enough, you dropped this video while I was in the Faroe's, but from the title alone I knew it would be good one! As as you can imagine, the 24-105 was right there with me the whole trip!
I've noticed a lot of photographers on RUclips just jam with the zoom and don't pause to consider focal length at all actually. Like they might as well be cropping in post. Good on you for noting the distinct differences between focal lengths. Particularly compression and distortion. I bet you saved some people a lot of issues in their learning process! I also hope people in general know that a zoom is best as a pile of primes *not* as a replacement for your feet. Like the 24-105 is a 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, etc. Using it as such- rather than just zooming for momentary convenience- is pretty key to understanding focal length theory and practice.
Love my Sony 24-105 as well. And as you can attest Mads, it holds up great, even when rolling out of ones bag, down the rocky slopes of Fossa, into the water at Nigel's feet! 6 months now and still working great!
Thank you for such an excellent and detailed video! I really want to buy the Sony FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS as my first lens to get the amazing versatility the lens offers, but I felt worried that F/4 wouldn’t let in enough light compared to F/2.8. After seeing your AMAZING photos, I’m convinced that F/4 will be just fine! Your landscape photos are truly inspiring man! Absolutely beautiful!
man this is the first video I ever watched of you, and I am never impressed so easily but you are very impressive not only because of the photos you took but also because of your deep knowledge and simple explanation.
Thanks for the amazing video and useful info brother! I was thinking to change my lenses in same order but I wasn't sure if it would work as I expect and you confirmed it 💯
All call my Canon 24- 105mm “favourite lens” because of the great photos it has given to me. Including some beautiful shots of flowers in gardens. It is also my underwater photography lens.
Great points. I would also add that with today’s DSLR/mirrorless cameras it is easy to adjust ISO to compensate for exposure at f/4 versus f/2.8. But having that extra 35 mm of focal length can’t be added so easily. I like the perspective in the 85-105 mm range for portraits which makes the face look very natural and proportional.
Wow . . . EXCELLENT presentation! I just purchased a Sony a7iii moving up from an a6500. I do have 1 full frame lens, the Sony 70-200 f4. So far I am very happy, but I am strongly considering this lens, as an all-around lens. Thank you so much for a well presented informative video. Masterful work by the way ! Thank you very much.
Mads, Many thanks for your inspirational videos. Whenever I hear the musical lead in to your Iceland videos, I feel inspired. My wife and I just got back from a 13 day self guided photography trip in Iceland that was in no small measure a result of the idealism present in your work and in you. Thank you again Mads Peter Iversen. Joleen and I will always be grateful. Phil Zivnuska
I have just sold my Sony 24mm-70mm GM and purchased Sony 24mm-105mm as I was always wanting a lens with more versatility. Watched your video which was very informative with some good explications in relation to focal lengths, together with some great images. I will certainly be following your channel. Many Thanks!
Thanks Peter. You have created an excellent presentation... and reminded me why I should pick up my 24-105 again. We sometimes get caught up with one particular style of landscape shooting and neglect other, possibly better alternatives.
You are just amazing. These ideas are great. Your voice pitch match with Sean Tucker. I am glad you have made so many videos to learn from. Thanks a lot for all your videos. You just gained a fan.
Wooow... yeah, great points. I have a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 (contemporary) and I was considering the switch to this 24-105 G. Also, I recently saw a video from Nigel Dansen about merging photos... and you make the same point: Sometimes is better to have 24, 35, or 50mm and merge photos similarly as you would for panorama. You can get great results, sometimes better. The f4 is only a struggle for 1 thing: Astrophotography. But most of my photography also doesn't need the f2.8. Great share, Thanks!
I shot only with prime lenses for the last decade, then “discovered” the creative power of good zoom lenses when I brought a Lumix LX100 with its 24-70 equivalent to the Yucatán. It has been a game-changer for me, and your 5 reasons sums up why perfectly. I have since added a 24-120mm equivalent for my “big” bodies. And a 16-36. And a 70-200. Sigh... But the 24-120 is truly is my “go-to” lens.
I think I agree with you on this. Out of my lens range my canon 24-105 is by far my best lens optically and has an almost perfect range. Thing is I use a cropped sensor canon 80d so I loose some of the wildness I like but fixing that with a pano a great option. Thanks for the informative video Mads!
I really tried to focus on the review but ended up just admiring the amazing shots you have taken..... guess I'll have to rewatch it from the start.Keep up the amazing work.
Is anyone going to point out that as much as this is very informative, we are getting BANGER after BANGER in these examples!? Well done sir, bloody well done!
This was the first lens I purchased after selling my kit lens. It’s a great lens. I’ve recently purchased the Tamron 17-28 for the occasions that I want the wider end.
Having just acquired a Canon EF 24-105 F4L MkII lens (basically it was a present) I'm interested to learn more about this focal length range. Your video was hugely informative and I'm overwhelmed by the quality of the photos that you presented. I wish I had the time to explore the locations that were featured in them. Thank you for sharing.
This is your first video that I have watched, I like the pace. Very calming :). I've got a 24-70mm Canon with no IS but I don't miss it. Lovely lens. Its the closest I have to a 'kit lens' so I don't miss the extra focal length either but I have heard people say they miss that 35mm more zoom on the 105mm lens.
The 24-105 lens is an amazing lens. When I switched fromCanon to Sony, I made sure that it was part of my new kit. I am looking to add the 100-400 to my kit. When I was shooting Canon I had a 70-200 and I found myself wishing for a little more reach while I was in Zion NP
Hi Peter, this video helped me to decide which lens I would have to buy. I am glad you mentioned the f/2.8 and f/4 dilemma. I came to the same thought - why buy an f/2.8 lens, if I want to have a large depth of field for landscape photography? Last week I bought your two landscape composition ebooks, which stunned me. Really very helpful and understandable. Thank you very much! Have a good light! Petr
I bought this lens for wedding photography pairing it with my A7IV and 50mm 1.2GM lens your photographs showed me the possibilities of this lens thank you! Sub
I have ordered this lens and hope to also get such great shots in the future. You have developed a great instinct for composition and are able to explain it well. Thanks! I do not have the time for getting out and travel to do such Photography but your work sure inspires me to want to! Your love of photography and nature seems to make you a good peaceful down-to-earth person.
Conversely, my Sony FE collection has 4 lenses which don't quite cover even the range of the 24-105! (24 F1.4 GM, Tamron 28-75 F2.8, Sony 55 F1.8, Laowa 100 F2.8 2x macro for those curious) I love my setup, but it definitely wouldn't make sense for a landscape photographer. Lovely work as always Mads!
Thanks for this highly informative video Mads! After watching many RUclips videos, I was unsure which zoom to go for and left me mistakenly thinking that an f2.8 lens would be 'better', but your video cleared this up and helped me understand that based on my needs, a 24-105 f4 lens would be perfect (for taking landscape shots) as I can also edit these in Lightroom afterwards. I have just ordered this lens, so thanks again :)
This is the lens that is coupled with my A7iii 95+ percent of the time for the past three years. Being an avid advanced amateur photographer with main interest in landscape photography, I found that the IQ and versatility of this lens is unsurpassed. Thanks for sharing!
Recently went through the thought processes about 24-70 or the 24-105 to fill my gap as I already had a 16-35 and 70-200, I chose the 24-105 and just love its versatility, maybe an astro specific lens next year, if I am doing a wild camp and looking to reduce weight then the 24-105 will give me great focal range coverage, I am loving the results up to now :-)
Totally agree with you, I do real estate, architecture, landscapes and wildlife. 12-24/25-105 and 100-400 is top choice. I have also few primes 35/55/85/90 macro for portrait with amazing bokeh
Great video. I own the Sony 24-105 coupled with the a7 r iii. Agree with you that the lens is very versatile. I have used it fir landscape, action (capturing surfers), seascapes, city, and even a few portraits of granddaughter. I knew the lens would be superb quality based on reviews, but am amazed on how flexible it is.
My Nikon 24-120 stays on my D850 most of the time...but you're right about this focal range. On my film camera's I use a 28-105mm lens with a close focusing function on the lens, this is also a useful tool in my armoury...great pics by the way in your video...
Outstanding work, breathtaking. We use the Sony 24-105mm f/4 for our wedding and portrait photography and its just amazing. We couldn’t be happier! Cheers.
Love my 24-105. One of the most underrated lenses in the Sony line up. I always try to convince my friends how good it is, but they say, “It’s a F4” 🤦🏻♂️
It obviously depends what your main use of it is. It works for portraits, but if that's your main use of the lens and you like the bokeh it's probably better with a 2.8 or something smaller :)
Agreed on most points for landscape photography, though I'll stick to a 24-70 f/2.8 as my daily driver. One stop means a lot if shooting at night. In response to 11:00 mark, I don't think mind having a gap between focal lengths. 150-600 for wildlife, 24-70 for almost everything else is a simple enough kit in my eyes.
I own a 18mm 2.8 Zeiss Batis, 35 2.8 Rokinon and a 70-200 F4 G, Before that I had the 24-105 but realized I always went tele or wide. I may pick up a 24-70 someday but I love my kit right now :)
Your photos are fantastic....seeing your results have pretty much put this lens at the top of my list...although I’m still considering the Zeiss 24-70 as an option. Well done on your excellent photography and thanks for this review!
Nice review of the 24-105. I have enjoyed your quality information for the landscape photographer. As a newer owner of Canon's EOS R, I decided to purchase the RF 24-105. I was so amazed at the quality and versatility - even compared to my trusted EF 24-70 2.8. I am new to your content but will continue to watch.
I would highly and strongly recommend the full version of the composition e-book. Lots of good information and well worth the price. BTW, enjoyed the video, I like the 24-105 f-4, it’s an all around great lens.
I've had great success with the Sony 24-70mm f/4. Back when I purchased it, the 24-105mm wasn't yet available. I've just recently purchased the 24-105mm as my main walkaround lens and I'm looking forward to trying it out in upcoming trips to New York City and Spain.
I've had the Canon 24-105 f4 for about 4 years, it has been my go-to lens for almost everything. It is amazingly versatile as you've said, sharp, not too heavy. However I have just bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC (stabilisation) to try out for a bit. I still have the 24-105 so will have to work out whether I'm happy with losing 35mm of focal length, could I get over that with a long lens? I did have a 70-200 f4, but I didn't use it often as I preferred to just carry the 24-105. It's gonna be tough to decide.
I tried a 24-70 F2.8 on my full frame 6D and was really disappointed with the zoom range. All it seemed to give me was a little bit back and a little bit further than normal vision. So I went for the 24-105 F4. I have three fast primes 24/50/85 so that covers me for low light work. It just gives that bit extra reach.
That's not surprising. The 24-70mm lenses tend to be intended for use with a 70-200mm or similar. It's part of how they get away with that range. You can cheat it a bit by cropping, but doing so gives up some of the improvements on noise that come with higher resolutions.
This helps greatly! I’ve been in the fence, which of these two lenses to purchase. Thanks. Great job with explaining how you use the 24-105 compositionally!
Thank you Mads for this tutorial. I also use the holy trinity ( 16-35, 24-70 and the 70-200 ).... the 24-70 is the most used lens during my trips with the pano-trick for wide or high range. Just bought a mirrorless FF-camera (Canon R) and the Canon RF 24-105 mm f4 IS is my next purchase. Also i must say that your eBook on Composition is just a super educational piece that i will recommend to everyone !!!
I added the Tamron 24-70mm VC G2 2.8 to my landscape gear and am using it even more than my ultra wide angle. It has IS and works very well. I do agree the 24-105 is versatile but haven't regretted passing on it yet. Great video as always Mads, your images inspire me to travel more for epic landscapes.
Thanks for the great video, Mads. I took delivery of my new Canon 24-105 lens yesterday and cannot wait to get it out into the field to try. I need to log a lot of hours before heading to Tuscany this spring. Love your very educational videos!
Very informative video. Thank you. And stunningly-beautiful photos! I just purchased a 25-105mm f/4 Just a few days ago. I'm looking forward to making it one of my main lenses.
Very informative video! I love the demonstration of focal lengths at 3:40. It changes the background of an image dramatically and that is something ive never considered. Excellent video and beautiful images Mads!
I agree with your thinking. When I moved from crop to full frame, I took a look back at my photos and what focal lengths I tended to shoot. On the crop system my workhorse was a 18-140mm. When I crunched the numbers and applied the 1.5x crop factor I found that I very often shot at focal lengths greater than 70mm. I shoot Nikon D850 so the Nikkor 24-120mm F4 was the obvious choice but I also considered the Sigma Art 24-105 F4. I was able to test both back to back and ended up choosing the Sigma because I felt it was generally sharper. My usual kit is Nikon 18-35mm F3.5-4.5, Sigma Art 24-105mm F4 and Sigma 100-400mm. With these three lens I can handle most situations. I do also own the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 but it really doesn't get used much and is often left at home due to its bulk and awkwardness with filter usage. But the lens I use 85% of the time is the 24-105mm and if I can only bring one lens that is the one!
Nice video and tremendous images as always. I had the Sony a mount 24-70/2.8 which was an excellent lens even with the adapter to the full frame Sony a7r3. I have since traded it for the 24-105 and I agree it is a must have. The one stop difference wide open is of no consequence to what I do. It is a great mate to the Sony G master 100-400. I had the 70-200/4 and it was a terrific lens and traded it for the 100-400. Wow, this lens is tack sharp at all apertures and focal lengths. Not too much heavier. I use it it lot for wildflower close-ups at 400mm. The lens has such good close focusing ability that I have not needed extension tubes to get frame filling wildflower close-ups. Cheers, Erik
Thanks to those of you correcting me on the image stabilization in the 24-70 f/2.8. The f/2.8 versions from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma Art do have IS. The two Canon 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't - however, the f/4 version does. My bad ;)

There's also the new Canon RF 24-70 f2.8 that will have IS.

I started photography within the last year and a happy accident was getting the 24-105 as my first lens. I love it.
The images at the end are sensational. I shall carry them in my head when I am out shooting. I can never match them but I can aspire to try. 💗

I bought this lens for wedding photography pairing it with my A7IV and 50mm 1.2GM lens your photographs showed me the possibilities of this lens thank you! Sub
I totally agree. Back in the days with my Nikon I used the 24-120mm. Now with my Sony the 24-105mm. Perfect zoom range
Great video and i totally agree with you! 95%+ of my photos are shot with the 24-105mm lens!
Recently went through the thought processes about 24-70 or the 24-105 to fill my gap as I already had a 16-35 and 70-200, I chose the 24-105 and just love its versatility, maybe an astro specific lens next year, if I am doing a wild camp and looking to reduce weight then the 24-105 will give me great focal range coverage, I am loving the results up to now :-)
I love your videos and delivery. I love your pace and approach to teaching. You're awesome.
Just got my first 24-105 lens today. Can't wait to get started. Thanks for your video.
Totally agree with you, I do real estate, architecture, landscapes and wildlife. 12-24/25-105 and 100-400 is top choice. I have also few primes 35/55/85/90 macro for portrait with amazing bokeh
I meant 24-105 not 25-105 ...
Picked up a a6400 and the tamron 17-70 lens. My first real setup. Looking forward to using it as an excuse to explore the world.
Thank you. Your sticthing multiple photos shooting at normal or slightly telephoto, corrects parrelel corrections.
Stayed for the photographs. They are INCREDIBLE. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Fantastic video and beautiful photos!
Excellent Mads. I bought the RF24-105 a couple of months ago. It is my "go to" lens, as I almost never swap to another lens. Thanks again!
There was confusion between 24 -240 f4 and 24-105 , I will surely go for 24-105. Thanks for this useful video
My Nikon 24-120 stays on my D850 most of the time...but you're right about this focal range. On my film camera's I use a 28-105mm lens with a close focusing function on the lens, this is also a useful tool in my armoury...great pics by the way in your video...
Bought the Sony a7iii last week and have ordered the 24 - 105 as my first full frame lens.
@Foto4Max you are really wrong
Thank you for the video. Made my purchase for the 24-105 after watching this. ☺
Looks like I chose wisely! I've got this lens and an A7 III on the way. Thanks for the great video.
What an excellent video.....and what beautiful pictures. You have convinced me to purchase a 24-105 mm zoom lens.
Agree. A photo with a bit of loss of sharpness in extreme corners is clearly better than no photo of blurry photo
I own a 18mm 2.8 Zeiss Batis, 35 2.8 Rokinon and a 70-200 F4 G, Before that I had the 24-105 but realized I always went tele or wide. I may pick up a 24-70 someday but I love my kit right now :)
Thank you for your time in producing this video. This is most helpful and very well done. I appreciate your time...in creating this.
Very good job. You sold me on the Sony 24-105 instead of Sigma 24-70. I hope I can take some good photos like you did.
My 24 105 is by far my old faithful. Perfect for travel
Excellent photos you have taken. A very good zoom lens is always better to carry.
Went back to watch this oldie but goodie! Thanks
No other RUclips presenter makes more "World Class" images, you teach by example MPI.
I've had great success with the Sony 24-70mm f/4. Back when I purchased it, the 24-105mm wasn't yet available. I've just recently purchased the 24-105mm as my main walkaround lens and I'm looking forward to trying it out in upcoming trips to New York City and Spain.
On one more about this email is not be open a lot and then you can I don't want the one
It's really about compromises. Optimal image quality and carrying 85 different primes or practicality of carrying one zoom ;)
I traded my tamron 28/200 in for this lens , I wanted this one originally, I shot with it finally and really love it !!
Awesome as always Mads, i have the same 24-105 f4 and a7riii. You tips and approach to photography are an inspiration!!
This will be my first lens when I go to Sony selling all my canon gear now for a A7r 3 and a 24-105, 100-400 then one day a 16-35 2.8
I also have that lens, and is like you said, always on the camera until proven otherwise.
Damn your explanation on less foreground & more background has made think in different perspective, this give me reason to try it. Thank you.
Your pictures... Wow. Wow. Wow...
I hear good things about G2 lenses from Tamron. You're welcome and thanks a lot :)
Wonderfully informative because of the real-world landscape applications you employ. Thanks.
Very informative, definitely worth the time spent watching it. Some of those pictures you have taken are out of this world. 👍👌
That photo at 4:44 is majestic
The photo @7:22 is astonishing 😍
Thanks for the great video, Mads. I took delivery of my new Canon 24-105 lens yesterday and cannot wait to get it out into the field to try. I need to log a lot of hours before heading to Tuscany this spring. Love your very educational videos!
Very informative video. Thank you. And stunningly-beautiful photos! I just purchased a 25-105mm f/4 Just a few days ago. I'm looking forward to making it one of my main lenses.
Those might be the best pictures I have ever seen. Just phenomenal ! Definetly have to get a 24 - 105 after seeing your Video. Thank You.
Thank you very much, Lucas! Remember it's not the lens that makes phenomenal pictures. Check my 70-200 and 16-35mm videos too ;)
Very informative video! I love the demonstration of focal lengths at 3:40. It changes the background of an image dramatically and that is something ive never considered.
Excellent video and beautiful images Mads!
Thank you very much, Hunter! :)
Yeah, I agree. Love my 24-105G. That an a wide prime for astro is my travel kit.
Wow!! Absolutely stunning landscapes.😍
Yes, those bulky lenses and their filters can be so annoying!
More excellent info. Mads! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
