bought mine about 4 years ago and it still is going fantastically well. It has not degraded at all in sound and I thin I have only had to swap batteries out twice in all of this time. I have several practice and smaller amps below my katana 50 and of them all , this is the clearest and best sounding amp I have for just messing around. Thanks for the great review once again. Nothing better to just grab a guitar and amp, kick back in the bedroom and just play.
Hey bro. I haven't even watched this video yet and I already want to say I trust your reviews more than just about anyone else. So all the way from Louisiana, U.S.A., cheers mate.
I own the Katana 50 watt but for it to have that "good" sound you need to crank it up a bit too loud for just a practice. So I bought a Yamaha THR10X and that fits the bill perfectly. But this sounds just as good and is probably cheaper too.
picked one up. they had a couple chapman guitars up on the wall at the newly opened guitar center. unfortunately. I wasn't able to check them out. They were really high up and no one was around to help me out. I plan on stopping by again and hopefully I can see what those new guitars are like in person.
These sound great! It’s funny how he mentions the fact it’s lunchbox size... My first practice amp was actually called a lunchbox, it was same size as these but red. Does anybody else remember them??! (About 30 years ago!)
I'm totally impressed. I'd only say that I hope the three way switch for brown/crunch/clean is robust but time will tell. Boss are fairly reliable so I'm not that worried. The main problem is for anyone wanting to sell their second hand old type practice amps, their value has fallen through the floor to the core of the Earth. So much for not much in so little. Boss is in charge.
This begs the question: Katana Mini, Yamaha THR10 (or even 5) or Vox Mini 5 (or 3)? I had much preferred to at least for once hear the amp with an ambient mic instead of that mic setup with the mic being half a foot from the speaker and probably even with some proximity effect playing into it... this just isn't how this little amp most likely will sound in realistic practicing situations. I just can't imagine it would. Also, 109$? Quite expensive considering you can get a Fender Mustang I v2 for 119$.
I sold my fender Mustang amp and a few other bits and got one of these, a harley benton t-20 HH, new strings, new lead and a tanglewood crossroads acoustic guitar. Totally worth it.

You've given me a lot of insight and goals to work towards. That said, to the point of this little combo, how do you think this compares to the Blackstar Fly 3? I know the Boss has an extra 4 watts, and it's a 1x4 compared to Blackstar's 1x3 3 watt, but I'm just looking for something to tote around that's gonna give me some good sound (obviously not enough to gig with lol, but more for practicing on the go when the opportunity arises). Any input would be appreciated. I look forward to more of your work, and keep on rockin'!

Rob Chapman Id rather save the extra (and did) but your right for someone with a very small budget or need for the lightweight capacity this would be better.
you clearly dont understand the purpose of this product.. good god it freaking portable amp to play like at the camp fire/ some backyard party.. not a for a gig or show off shit
so you could probably grab it for like 55 bucks used given enough time, im sure these will be all over and people might upgrade to the bigger version later
Greetings from Georgia, USA! Its 3:25pm now. Thanks for the awesome review as always dude. I saw the review on the full size Katana's and was blown away. Im a old dude now and my pops is finally getting into electric guitar. He sold his acoustic for a hollowbody. I think this would be a cool little "here ya go pops!" amp for him to jam on. And the Blues Driver... I can just see the smile on his face already. By the way, my mom made pretty good sandwiches and always was sure to include a pack of Lucky's...non filter of course. \m/
I have the blackstar and this looks like better in just about every aspect. I think theres about a $30 price difference, so if I had to do it again, I'd spend the extra go with the Boss. The blackstar is not a bad little amp though and I really like mine, but I think I'd rather have this.
anonymous Anonymous The Fly 3 is pretty great. I like mine a lot, and don't regret the purchase at all. I do think this sounds better though, especially on the bass end.
ROLAND CUBE LITE repackaged. I have the Cube Lite and Fly 3. Both are great the Katana mini is the blend of the two with the delay instead of the Chorus/Reverb of the Lite.. So it comes down to size or both sound great . The wattage is the same. The Fly gives you wider stereo with the extension cabinet.
DonnaKae You can't get a stereo image from a single source (not even with a cabinet extension). If you've ever tried duplicating your guitar track in your DAW and panned one hard left and the other hard right, you'll notice a funny thing happens; it's still centered, and it's still mono... it's just louder. However, you can trick your ears into thinking they're hearing two separate signals by delaying one side within 30 milliseconds or so, which is called the Haas Effect. Even then, good ears will realize it's the same track, and you'll likely end up running into phase issues. This is why guitarists ALWAYS double track the rhythm guitar if they want wide stereo guitars. When you get the time, throw on some decent headphones and listen to some of your favorite songs with stereo guitars, move around the left and right balance (if it isn't obvious to you) and pay attention to how many subtle differences there are. There will at the very least be playing differences, but likely there will even be some EQ/tone differences, along with different gain and FX settings.
@Marcel.. im not triggered im confused.. if you simply missed them.. then you shouldnt say like you know something.. since they(Lee and Rob) have done some reviews on ibanez already
Have to tell one and all, for small home practice amps that can be taken anywhere (battery operated too) theres nothing better than the Yamaha THR series. I have the metal version the THR10X and its simply the best metal practice amp Ive ever played or heard. If you want the rock/hard rock version its the THR10. Go see for yourself.
Theee Chosen One Yeah true if its all about price. These are $99 vs the Yamahas are $299.But for its small desktop size I thought it was a good idea to mention it here.
only thing is mate the Yamaha THR10 X is another £150, and I've had the Yamaha three times, don't ask me why I've sold them but your right the metal version is fantastic.
zola116 yeah its high dollar and yep the metal version is totally sick. I play it every day. No pedal needed to play thrash, black, death any metal genre
john doe I said he be first in being the first in acknowledging not being first. get with the times boi. P.S.: if john doe could doe a john, would john be able to john a doe without doe-ing the john while john-ing the doe? And is there a doe more doe-er than john doe?
i have one, i own a blues junior, vox ac30, wanted something i could play on my sofa along with battery power along with fender esquire guitar, it was left in box when i purchased but now love it , it makes you work as a guitar player without all the toys, however pays dividends its dynamic & helps me 60 year player played semi pro & gigged, i know how an electric guitar works. crazy this little plastic box.
Funnily enough so did Rob Chapman, never heard him mention this amp again (after such a glowing review!) 7 months later he says he still uses the yamaha..hmm
I own one of these. Love it. However, my only complaint with this amp is it does not have a 8 ohm / 16 ohm speaker out like the Orange Crush Mini has or the Orange Terror Stamp. Otherwise it is a brilliant little amplifier.
St. Anger You are my favorite Metallica Album because I can't hear your god awful drummer, your Bassist who never wanted anything to do with anything remotely metal, and because I have an album to hang over my friends heads when they say they like Metallica. 😊
1/3 the price is defiantly a way to kill sales of the 6 year old THR series, but I am betting it doesn't sound as good. I do believe that Yamahas price point may need more justification as competition continues to challenge.
Interesting point about turning the delay into reverb. I've got the Blackstar Fly 3 mini amp which has exactly the same delay controls and which you can convert to reverb in exactly the same way. You don't think Roland nicked the idea do you? Heaven forfend!
That's just what reverb is! It's the delayed reflections (and reflections of reflections) from the boundaries of a relatively small space. It makes sense that all delays will behave this way, if the delay time can be turned down far enough.
Man, I would have been in heavy metal heaven if I'd had this at sixteen year old. Budget amps these days are bloody amazing.

That's what I want more people to do, you can definitely tell how loud it REALLY is vs. a compressed sound through a mic
Hey Chappers, greetings from the US, i just wanted to say that you're videos are amazing and have helped me grow as a guitar players, from playing metal most of my time to playing some Hendix, Van Halen, and some or Dorje's tunes, i wanted to say thank you and i hope the best for you, Cheers!
How are you spending eighty nine quid on takeaway Indian mate? That borders on accomplishment.
Jammy Git - I like the way you think.
He's British.
You know something is made out of third world?
the Gold PRS is lovely, both in sound and looks.
Or even better just buy the 50 watt version so you can play at home with the 0.5 watt option as well as having a giggable amp
provenelk absolutely, the 50 Watt Katana is incredible - but then this is £89...
Rob Chapman And battery powered, meaning it's friendly to people who travel a lot like myself.
Rob Chapman Id rather save the extra (and did) but your right for someone with a very small budget or need for the lightweight capacity this would be better.
you clearly dont understand the purpose of this product.. good god
it freaking portable amp to play like at the camp fire/ some backyard party.. not a for a gig or show off shit
so you could probably grab it for like 55 bucks used given enough time, im sure these will be all over and people might upgrade to the bigger version later
Katana Mini VS. Blackstar Fly 3 ... Which is better?
The Fly3 will always have its place as an ultra portable. Perfect for hotel rooms!
There will at the very least be playing differences, but likely there will even be some EQ/tone differences, along with different gain and FX settings.
curtains and strat colour combo 👌
Gets sent gear early to review it. Must be nice to be a pro musician and youtube star :D.
WOW! Great little amp!
Is it me or does it look like a car battery
most amps are
Always love reviews and demos
Is it possible for you and Lee to review the Ibanez RG1070PBZ? It would be really useful for me and for a lot of other people
Ibanez guitars somehow never get reviews, which is a shame.
Marcel Krebs that's not true at all.
@marcel.. Never get reviews?? they have done many ibanez product before.. what are you talking about?
サツッピミク who's they? Maybe I simple missed them? Why do you get so triggered?
@Marcel.. im not triggered im confused.. if you simply missed them.. then you shouldnt say like you know something.. since they(Lee and Rob) have done some reviews on ibanez already
You got some sick rifts dude
Have to tell one and all, for small home practice amps that can be taken anywhere (battery operated too) theres nothing better than the Yamaha THR series. I have the metal version the THR10X and its simply the best metal practice amp Ive ever played or heard. If you want the rock/hard rock version its the THR10. Go see for yourself.
THR10 is in another league. It's not meant to be compared to..... _this._
Okay, you get a lot better tones out of this thing than the last guy I saw who tried to pitch this.
Hello from America!!! It's currently 3:07 A.M.
Greyson Petrenko its 1:15 in Colorado!!
2:20 a.m in Houston
And 8:32am in the uk xD
2:33 in Alabama!!
3:35 in Michigan
Wow...eleven minutes in and we're still playing bluesy crunch. The Captain would be proud! :D
Mmmm...nothing like smooth jazz and Indian food at 2 am.
"Flappy J" - worst euphamism ever.
I never heard anything bad about this little guy,,, so, that says alot ! I think I am sold, :)
Is there any guitarist left in the world that doesn't have a small practice amp by now ? good value though
Mark O'Connor me
Well you certainly have plenty of choice, happy shopping :)
Mark O'Connor new players.
i own a marshall DSL 40c and thinking of buying the code 25 or 50
I only have a peavey mini head and a 4x12 cab.
Man, I think I remember when ChappersTV started all those years ago. Seems like decades that you were in that little room in Wiltshire!
I'm not first, and I don't care.
Noah G then why did you comment this?
Thing Stuff cause he first and he don't care. Get with the times boi
EL DUDERINO he said he wasn't first ya mong. Also, if he truly didn't care then he wouldn't have commented in the first place.
john doe I said he be first in being the first in acknowledging not being first. get with the times boi.
P.S.: if john doe could doe a john, would john be able to john a doe without doe-ing the john while john-ing the doe? And is there a doe more doe-er than john doe?
Good one m8
Got me one. Liking my les Paul more than ever.
cant wait for my kids to grow into a better amplifier they suck at the moment
i have one, i own a blues junior, vox ac30, wanted something i could play on my sofa along with battery power along with fender esquire guitar, it was left in box when i purchased but now love it , it makes you work as a guitar player without all the toys, however pays dividends its dynamic & helps me 60 year player played semi pro & gigged, i know how an electric guitar works. crazy this little plastic box.
Yeah, I'll keep my Yamaha THR10
Me to
Väiski123 good for you sweetheart.
lol. I also have an amp that's way more expensive than this that I like better. Yay for me!
THR10 is KING! Bend the knee bitches!
Funnily enough so did Rob Chapman, never heard him mention this amp again (after such a glowing review!)
7 months later he says he still uses the yamaha..hmm
Got one today. Absolutely love it :D
Rob I like you but please dude drop the eyes-wide-open-mouth-open-surprised-look-click-bait bullshit thumbnails.
I own one of these. Love it. However, my only complaint with this amp is it does not have a 8 ohm / 16 ohm speaker out like the Orange Crush Mini has or the Orange Terror Stamp. Otherwise it is a brilliant little amplifier.
*couch* ruclips.net/video/RyRdg6bZBLI/видео.html
But can it play me. I was a good album right guys?
St. Anger you needed more destortion and snare drums
St. Anger You are my favorite Metallica Album because I can't hear your god awful drummer, your Bassist who never wanted anything to do with anything remotely metal, and because I have an album to hang over my friends heads when they say they like Metallica. 😊
Lars is a decent drummer, Jason wanted to do a few side projects but Lars and James weren't having it at the time. You're bullshit.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA....AMERICA!! Midnight-30, here!! Keep kicking ass, Rob!!
Dude, your jamming is out of this world! Super inspiration!!! Fantastic!
Yamaha THR 10 killer.
Nah i would buy a used Thr10x over this anyday
Johnny Utah I did, but the standard THR10 and I use it all the time.
At more than twice the price is it worth it?..
I don't know, the Boss wasn't out when I was in the market for a desktop amp and I really don't feel the need to switch.
As soon as I heard Rob mention that trick, I went and tried it on my Fly 3 too. And yes, it does give you reverb!
That's just what reverb is! It's the delayed reflections (and reflections of reflections) from the boundaries of a relatively small space. It makes sense that all delays will behave this way, if the delay time can be turned down far enough.
