I LOVE how Chris gave VERY specific directions for telling the story of their meeting “in chronological order and assuming the person listening has never heard it before”. So so helpful for many neurodivergent folks and he is just so tuned in.
He’s really good with working with people with different differences and know how to ask and be respectful, and let people shine and tell their stories
@@hannahwitts1339 Because a lot of times it can help people, especially with autism, to have very specificly phrased questions or else it can cause confusion or overload be ause many autistic people tend to think about things very much in detail and deeply and thoroughly. For example: A teacher at school sets the assignment "imagine you're on a holiday and write a card home". A neurotypical person might just write some shallow things and use some typical postcard phrases in them without much meaning, a neurodivergent person might be irritated by that task because, of course, what you write in a postcard and how you phrase it depends on who exactly at home you are writing to (grandparent, parent, young sibling, best friend, etc.) and also where you are on your vacation (snow, sea, woods, mountains, city) and how long you are staying there (just for a weekend, a week, several weeks) and for what purpose you came there (have an adventure, relax, meet with a friend who loves away, etc.). Another example: Someone asking "what colour is an elephant" would typically get the response "grey" from a neurotypical person because grey is what elephants are usually portrayed as. An autistic person, however, might think about an elephant in india vs. in africa (where they have different shades of skin colour) or about an elephant covered in mud or even their blue toy elephant and might be confused whether to answer "grey" or "brownish" or "blue" or whatever. Giving specific instructions (i. e. asking "what colour does an elephant have who was born in india and has clean skin) can clear up these multiple options and make it easier to not have misunderstandings when communicating.
Nope, my heart felt so happy that they love each other and are confident. It was so beautiful to watch! If every relationship could be this beautiful when people found their mate, what a wonderful place this would be ❤❤❤
“We’ll, Down syndrome and autism is actually a normal thing I have.” This was such a lovely answer. I’m glad she sees her circumstances as just regular. It’s just who she is. ☺️
usually they do. I have met a few with down syndrome and one of my friends has downs. They dont think like we do. Its not that she sees her circumstances as regular. They dont know any different. They do not compare like we would. That is the difference. To them, that is how it is.
yes but when she was asked what she would say to kids with autism she did not understand the question - they must be respected but they can't look after a baby what the heck
Indeed, what a sweet point. Yes, because they're not trying so hard to abstract its purpose and what such a dynamic does to their overall emotions. They mentally are better off in that way, to not have such a need to mindlessly abstract and make a song and dance about marriage and relationship as if it requires some artistic or poetic interpretation or overachieving, Olympian nature. This is why this channel is so great, it showcases how beautiful, curious, and/or livable life can be with varying perspectives of how it works.
What a great point. The way they can explain their decisions is amazing. Its a better understanding than the average person has. They traded some common abilities for some very uncommon ones. They are just different. Even his understanding of the benefits of being tall was so wise hahaha
@@AneXineohpright. But their also down to the basics of her: "but he still needs to learn." In what way? "He needs to learn how to pick up after himself" hahahaha
Your channel has broken the stigma of people who have disabilities, facial disorders, etc… they are just as important as everyone else in the world and they are people too who have real feelings, hopes and dreams.
Well it would be stupid to think anything otherwise. I don’t know where people would think in terms of that stigma you suggested in the first place. Why would a disability make someone not have feelings or hopes or dreams? Why would that make them any less important than anyone else???? That makes no sense.
I feel like this channel helps people understand disabilities that they might not have experienced life. I know I feel more confident talking to someone with a disability after watching them. Before I would worry that I could annoy them by introducing myself or asking if they need help. Now I understand as long as I'm respectful most people are happy to have a conversation.

@@EZ-IZZY1995 Imperfection is not referring to their syndromes, it's referring to their personalities and traits which thankfully applies to ALL of us. I had an elderly down syndrome patient who was at the end of her life. She was a mother and grandmother. She was a GREAT mother and grandmother! She opened my eyes sooo much, and i would absolutely never question parenthood for anyone with a disability. Edit: This was 17 years ago at the beginning of my career. She taught me some very valuable lessons. I'm so glad I got to witness her love and care for her family first hand!

My girlfriend and I are both disabled. She’s a stroke survivor with aphasia and an auditory processing issue with oral speech, and I have PTSD, HPPD, anxiety, chronic depression and suspected adhd/autism. Our issues are very different but often that’s what makes us good for one another. I mention this because I think a lot of people think life is over with a disability, it’s not. There is someone out there who will love you for you.
Love it guys, great mindset and yes its true, that mostly there is somebody for everybody, we just need to be openminded and openhearted, no prejudice❤
My partner and I are also both disabled! He is partially blind and I have several chronic illnesses. Life is different for us, but it just goes to show that disability can present itself in many different ways, and disabilities are not all the same!
@@luchirimoya exactly! People often think I’m “normal” and sometimes people see my girlfriend and think the same. Many disabilities are invisible, and disability can happen at any age. My uncle was not high functioning enough to live independently (though many are of course!), but was always a joy to be around, for everyone who knew him, and had a very happy life! I have always gravitated toward Downs people since then, volunteering at the local special needs agency just to get to hang out with them . Just because they have autism doesn't mean they're exempt from human emotions. I know you're trying to be nice but it is doing the opposite. It's ironic people like you want to say we're all the same then say they're different but thinking it's ok because you're painting it in a positive way 💀😂
Beautiful comment, I was thinking the same thing, I feel as if people like they- are meant to teach all of us “normies” about the true and more important meanings of life.

That dude just gave the best description of love I've ever heard and it's like he wasn't even trying- he just spoke from the heart, because that's all he knows how to do! Amazing
I gave up on dating for ten years then found my spouse. I am autistic and he is not. It’s so beautiful to see more healthy happy and in love neurodivergent couples. Best to you both!!
My life partner is also on the spectrum and he is amazing and perfect for me! He is so honest brutally sometimes😂🥰 I wouldn’t have him any other way♥️♥️♥️ I am a better person because of him🥰🥰🥰
I have Autism at 16, and give up on dating too because my ex 2 years ago catfish me after we broke up and was a con artist, and after that I ended dating my best friend and it didn't go well. I hope I can find somebody I'm compatible with and has a high value personality when I'm an adult, but right now I'm in your boat.
I've spoken with Charlie. She's a spitfire! She told me stories that made me realize that we have been underestimating people with DS completely. She is intelligent, sarcastic, a go-getter and defeats all of those stereotypes of DS.
Part of that is they often lived with parents or nursing homes and were infantilized and did not mature to no fault of their own. My mom was a community worker for people living independently and just like “normal” people mom said it was how much the parents supportively encouraged rather than tried to control everything that seemed to determine maturity and competence.
@@SL-es5kbMy parents were quite old when they had me. They didn't want me to be dependent on them or my 4 brothers. They raised me to be independent and able to look after myself when they are gone.

What an absolutely beautiful couple both inside and out. ❤I teared up as soon as he said his life was a 10 and described his love for her. These are true soul mates.
My best friend and neighbor growing up was a girl with downsyndrome. As a child I didn't realize anything was different. We would go swimming every day together in summer and she was literally the sweetest person I've ever known. We moved eventually and as a grown up I'm so thankful for our moms for letting two kids be kids and never make it a topic of discussion of why Ashley is different. Because she never was, she was always just my friend Ashley. I love this channel for normalizing people. And Ashley I know it's been forever since we last hung out but I miss you girl. I hope you're doing well.
It's the same thing with race. If the parents don't make an issue of it, racism on either side is nonexistent. Racists come from racist environments. One needs to make the effort to break the chain of prejudice. Just like with mental illnesses.
A more authentic and sincere description of what love is than most "normal" people could give when asked point blank. These videos need to be watched by everyone.
The dude is sooooo smart. He embodies manhood. She gave him purpose. He now works and achieves for her. And he understands this They are both so emotionally intelligent. So responsible. They’ll be good parents.
He is extremely smart and I'm amazed by him and her. They seem so mature yet they often make very adolescent comments. Like her saying the most important thing to do is to find a tall man.
@@karensamilow4409 really practical comment in a way. Balancing each other. Wanting someone to make up for your deficits and visa versa. She sees her height as a deficit and wants someone to be able to make up for that.
@@agricolaregs What the highly edited video interview removed showed that they both support each other. The interview lasted more than 3 hours yet the audience views only 17 minutes of that. Charlotte does all the cleaning, laundry, ironing and cooking. Riley loves making pasta but Charlotte makes the sauces for the pasta. Charlotte supports Riley as much as he supports her. Also, Charlotte lived independently in New York before moving to Washington to be with Riley. So, she was far from us her family and far from Riley.
In my eyes that's a pretty backwards idea of gender. They are both striving for a career to provide for themselves and their future family. It's not about their gender. But yes they are both intelligent people.
I know you mean well, but by and large "other/differently abled" is considered offensive. I am disabled, I can't do some things that most people can. And that's okay, it's not mean or wrong- it is simply a fact. I am disabled. Do I have different abilities than others? Yes, everyone does. That doesn't change the fact that I am disabled. In my neck of the woods, disabled people find such terms and "soft" language to be incredibly demeaning. That kind of language is used to sooth non disabled people. It is to make them more comfortable, not those who are disabled. Anyways, if you read all this I hope you have a good day!
They seem to be more well rounded and put together better than 98% of the rest of the marriages in the world. What wonderful people and sweet couple! I hope if they have kids we will get to see them all together. I hope they do more specials on them. More people need to be like Riley and Charlotte. Couples could really learn a lot about them. That's typical of people with Asperger's Syndrome. They really yearn for love, and tend to be really good at it. What amazes me is how mature Charlotte is.
@@BKNeifertnot only that, autistic people tend to be very literal and don’t see the point of mind games, lying or manipulation or not saying exactly what you mean. Charlotte loves her tall, super attentive husband. That’s how it should be, love it. He’s just straight smitten by her drive and intelligence, their love is so pure.
emphasis on tall
❤
I love how he said, I can reach the top cabinets and thr top of the refrigerator THATS what love is! Find someone that reaches the top of your refrigerator ❤
@@Wooplot Because he can reach the top of the shelves, something I can totally relate to. I went with the first one with a dish-washer. We have been married for almost forty years.
Okay, those answers are actually Funny 😂
I LOVE how Chris gave VERY specific directions for telling the story of their meeting “in chronological order and assuming the person listening has never heard it before”. So so helpful for many neurodivergent folks and he is just so tuned in.
Yes,i LOVED that too. He knows his stuff
My thoughts exactly!
He’s really good with working with people with different differences and know how to ask and be respectful, and let people shine and tell their stories
I'm curious, why he gave this specific instruction. Could somebody explain the reason for this?
@@hannahwitts1339 Because a lot of times it can help people, especially with autism, to have very specificly phrased questions or else it can cause confusion or overload be ause many autistic people tend to think about things very much in detail and deeply and thoroughly. For example:
A teacher at school sets the assignment "imagine you're on a holiday and write a card home".
Another example:
Someone asking "what colour is an elephant" would typically get the response "grey" from a neurotypical person because grey is what elephants are usually portrayed as.
Am I the only person who couldn't stop smiling the whole time listening to these two amazing people give their story?
No. I was smiling too.💖

They understand marriage and relationship on a level far greater than those without their disabilites. God bless them and keep them.
Dumb generalization.

These two are so adorable. I am so glad they found one another. And she is right…he is dreamy.
If people will just watch, it will help them to keep their own lives in proper perspective. I share these with my children too.

He is extremely smart and I'm amazed by him and her. They seem so mature yet they often make very adolescent comments. Like her saying the most important thing to do is to find a tall man.
@@nancyminui9108 She is only 4 foot 9 inches. She can't reach any cupboard or shelf. Of course Riley being tall is helpful to her.
Somewhere in the Universe are parents who enabled their "Other-Abled" kids to thrive and grow into beautiful adults. Well done!
Ditto
That’s the first thing I thought too. Their parents did great job.
"other abled" hahaha. In trying to be more sensitive, you simply sound more condescending..I love it
@@Talisman09 yeah honestly just say disabled. Disabled isn’t a bad word and avoiding it just increases the stigma.
May God Bless and keep them. They are just amazing!
But do they?
That's typical of people with Asperger's Syndrome. They really yearn for love, and tend to be really good at it. What amazes me is how mature Charlotte is.
У Шарлотты не может быть детей из-за неправильного набора хромосом.😢
@@BKNeifertnot only that, autistic people tend to be very literal and don’t see the point of mind games, lying or manipulation or not saying exactly what you mean. So there would be none of the hiding things or dishonesty, passive aggressiveness, manipulation, or any of the other negative communication issues that can happen that cause problems in other relationships. Obviously not everyone who doesn’t have autism does those things, and a lot of people have healthy relationships and healthy communication. They were just example of things that happen in some relationships and come between people
These guys are amazing. Totally guileless. Wow, they are just overflowing with love and joy.
Him answering a 10 to the question about how happy he is made me so happy! Guy is loving life more than most people could say.
Charlotte is fighting back tears when she talks about her feelings for Riley - the vast majority of us will never have what they've found.
@@goysb4jays566 No she just fancies him like mad.
@@goysb4jays566 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve always wanted a guy who could reach things... what more could a girl ask for?
@i ketcher maybe don't put your profile pic as girls butt cheeks? Just sayin
This couple is a inspiration, they have more love and understanding of each other than most couples.
What a beautiful couple. Thank God for these 2 beautiful people. They're more grown-up and mature than most of us. God bless you both always.
I went to the same school as Riley and i can say he's very nice, he always had interesting facts and I could tell he was intelligent. I'm so happy he found happiness and found love. Super happy for you Riley. I wish you both true happiness and continue to have such an awesome journey together!
I LOVE that Charlotte's advice for other kids with Down syndrome is to find a really tall attractive man!!!! Girl not holding back whatsoever! I loved this whole entire interview!
That was absolute favorite part of the interview. Realist advice 😂
I would love to see a follow up on this. They are such a sweet perfect couple.
That made me laugh real good :)
Discrimination against 'non tall' guys. Report this vid!!!!!!!
@@bonsummers2657 I like your sense of humor. My significant other would agree with you...LOL BUT, that authentic, crystalline love between Charlotte and Riley is amazing to witness.
My son is married to a wonderful lady who has high functioning autism. They just had their first child and are great parents. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect daughter in law. This couple said so many things that my son and his wife have said.
So she could pass on autism?🤦♀️
just a heads up we don't really use the terms high/low functioning anymore as they aren't really accurate and can be offensive
❤❤❤
She must be an extremely rare lady then.
@@decrepitwitch I did not realize that. My sons father-in-law referred to her as high functioning. I have a friend with an autistic son and he is completely non verbal and occasionally violent. My daughter-in-law doesn’t act any different from any other woman.
These awesome young men's speech is wonderful. He's focused on the real everything in his life. It's really amazing. His wife is splendid. God bless you 🙏 always.
It's so nice to see an actual connection rather than people simply making a video for the internet. these two have made my day.
👍💯
