  • Rachael and Griffin are both autistic and lovingly married. They prefer to live and sleep in separate homes, because that is the routine that works for them. Their marriage may be unique, but their love and commitment to one another is lifelong.

I grew up with Griffin as my neighbor and occasionally still see him around town. It didn’t really get across in this interview but he remembers so much about a person it’s awesome. Last time I saw him he was asking me if I still had the same black belt with a gold buckle that I wore to church one day back when we were like 13, and requested I get a new one because he liked it haha

I know, this has got to be my favorite video from Chris because I feel like I can learn the most from it. I actually feel like I relate to Griffin more, but wish I was more like Rachel because she is more mature than I was her age. Women should mature differently than men. I was just very “left-brained”. Thanks to Chris, Griffin and Rachel for sharing their story to the world. Love is enough when it is mutual; they work towards being what the other needs within their respective boundaries and abilities. There is a mutuality between them despite their differences. This is a sacrifice of themselves for something greater that they share between them. That is love.

This is how marriage with love works. They take turns talking (and with “getting [their] way next time”), she’s patient with him, & encourages him (“you’re smart”). He admits he listens to his wife (when appropriate) and doesn’t want to do bad things in front of her. Compromise, patience, encouragement, quality time together. I did too. She could feel more comfortable and independent around Griffin, he's her partner and not someone she necessarily needs to impress if that makes sense. Her parents seem to mean a lot to her and she looks for their validation, she was getting emotional while talking about how much she loves them so maybe vulnerability is difficult? I'm not sure, I'm just so happy these 2 have each other and the support they need and deserve.

    • @emprezesh
      @emprezesh 3 месяца назад +186

She is very thoughtful! Just so you know, there’s no such thing as “more advanced” autism. In this case, Griffin would be described as having higher support needs.
Because Rachel has less support needs when it comes to communicating (doesn’t need as much prompting or help explaining herself), that doesn’t mean she doesn’t need a lot of help with other things or doesn’t have serious issues that impact her life in the same way Griffin appears to.
Autism is described as a spectrum, which you could think of as different colors on the spectrum of light. Someone with “purple” autism is not going to be “more advanced” as someone with “green” autism, for example. It impacts every single person differently and varies in terms of support needs.

@@luku2232 I'm autistic, have ADHD, am severely chronically ill, and I used to live in Japan and I unfortunately felt rejected and misunderstood by a lot of people, especially older folks. "Hit the nail that sticks out" is a common saying in Japanese. It gives you an idea of the mentality.
Sadly, Japan has a history of hiding people with disabilities and treating them differently (sometimes mistreating them too), but it has gotten a little bit better in recent years. However, I'd say that when it comes to mental health, disabilities and any marginalized identities, Japan is years, even decades behind North America.
Also, Japanese people don't usually say what they think to your face (even when you ask them to be honest) so, it can be really difficult for autistic people to figure out what people want and mean. (Even neurotypical folks struggle with it!) You constantly have to read between the lines. It's also considered rude to ask a lot of questions and question the rules which is something I do a lot because I need to understand the logic behind everything and it was very frustrating for me to not be able to get answers and being perceived as rebellious and rude for asking.

From an outsiders perspective I would probably be considered "high-functioning", but this is actually not true as I spent the majority of my life masking while struggling very much internally. I've never had a career, I've never left home, I have had many relationships & been fully intimate, but I do not want to live or sleep with my significant other which has caused most of my intimate relationships to end. I actually am fine with being with family & my best friend, it does not really bother me if I have a romantic partner or not... It’s totally possible. You’re just different and know what you want and what makes you most comfortable and you obviously don’t compromise/cave in for the sake if keeping your partner. So the right person will come along one day - and I’ll tell you a secret: they always come into your life when you least expect it / when you stop looking…. Just make sure you’re still going out with friends and in public so it’ll have a chance to happen. And start saying yes more. In general. It’s a thing. Look into it ❤

What a wonderful couple! Everyone needs a mom like that.

They are so wholesome. I am auDHD and it’s always so nice to see other autistic people finding love. My friend/crush is also autistic lower-functioning/higher support than me(I don’t like to describe it that way, but I don’t know how to better describe it), and our interactions are also pretty similar to this. It can be hard to interact with an autistic person because of the loss of attention. We’re currently both teenagers (17&18). But this video gives me hope that maybe I could have a great relationship as an autistic person with another autistic person, even if they are higher support than me. It’s nice to see people with disabilities getting married and living life because sadly a lot of people with disabilities get discriminated against and can’t find people who love them like that.

my partner and I have been together 10 years, we're both low support needs autistic people. We never plan on living together, we're currently looking for houses as in two adjacent houses to live in together as neighbours. We do get what men and women do.. but you don't have to actually sleep next to someone for that to be part of your relationship. We have our reasons a big one is that my autism and ADHD came with a mighty dose of chronic insomnia and that can mean it's difficult for me to fall asleep with someone in the bed but also my tossing and turning can be disruptive to them. It's weird how many people think we're not committed to each other or in love because we have adjusted our lives to fit our needs rather than other peoples expectations.

This is a perfect example of how women can pass as neurotypical, because I bet the vast majority of neurotypical people wouldn’t suspect she is autistic if they met her alone, if they can’t spot the subtle clues in her body language, but I think it’s pretty safe to say most people could tell the man was autistic within seconds of hearing him speak. Whenever I see people who are neurodivergent living their lives to the fullest I am filled with so much joy. Their joy and authenticity is refreshing and infectious. I am reminded of how their priorities in life are often less infiltrated by greed, malice, or other intense manipulative emotions. They are so sweet to each other. I love this adorable and genuine couple. Truly wish the very best for them!

I’m autistic (& other disabilities) and 27 years old; my partner of 3.5 years is not autistic or disabled but we have made it work!! It takes a lot of compromise; and radical acceptance. Household stuff is different than a couple where both adults are abled & working. My partner has seen me through meltdowns, sensory overload, shutdown, autistic burnout, depressed. He helps me a lot verbalize how I am feeling and he can always tell when I’m hungry or tired or needs my meds before even I do sometime. I know my family is happy that he educated himself & is my support cause it makes them worry less when I’m not staying at home. (With partner half the week and parents other half….its the reality for many of us who have medium/high support needs.)
I know the future is unique for us & will not look like the relationships or marriages(?) of most our friends. So for anyone watching these videos whose autistic and discouraged on love- it is there and whether u find is also on the spectrum or another person abled or differently abled. And it can happen and you CAN be enough for someone who’s “normal.”….

My eldest is autistic and her bf is not. They've been together for only a few months, and I'm wondering how this will work out with him, not knowing fully the support she needs, even though she says she tells him. She's capable of taking care of herself, but not financially or anyone else.

Rachel and Griffin, thank you for sharing your story. My son Mark is 24 and would love to be married and have a family. Seeing your marriage gives me hope that Mark's dream of marriage can come true, even with his autism.

Its awesome to see two people over coming & living with challenges, yet theyre both truely happy and living their best lives! ❤ Really happy that they have each other and together are living a great life! Having such supportive families is also something that Is really great to see, it's something that everyone should have and experience in their lives.

I love how they’ve created their own dynamic and are unapologetic about it! Very inspiring and sweet!
