Teaching a horse to back up easily is a vital part of training. In this video I show you how to ask for the back up and quickly help the horse understand how to respond to the reins with the proper timing and release. It's so important to make sure our reins are connected to the horse's feet in order to have safe and effective communication at all times.

Sometimes when I go to back my horse up he will back up but he will turn his but out and back up diagonally. What can I do to improve a straight back up?

Sometimes it's in the hip, and you need to push the hip back in line and back up again, but often it's actually a shoulder problem. The shoulder will drop one direction or the other, which causes the horse to start backing crooked. Simply push the horses shoulder back the other direction and back up a few more steps. Repeat until you gain straightness. 🙂👍
