Thanks for the video. I've been asking for the backup with the reins - that's how i was instructed - I'm definitely going to implement your method. Thanks again. Gail in NC.

Not a horse trainer but in the dog world when I want to teach a backup I sometimes use a wall to help with the straightness, is this a method used for horses? (Or poles/fances/any other pisychal boundary to help straightness...)

That would probably work to back straight but this horse shows in working cow horse so I need her to back straight but also straight in an arc to set up for a turn on a cow so I need to be able to control the body while backing.

@@timandersonhorsetraining cool, I mostly teach a straight backup as the first "base" for all "hind end" exriceses (rollbacks, backup in heel, the "bunny" trick and meny more) bc just like with horses it helps to build stronger back mascular that is important in order to minimise unnecessary injuries...

How do you get a horse to differentiate between back with that leg cue, and rounding their backs, as shown in your video that goes over the different leg and rein cues?

I’m sorry I don’t know if it’s the sand or not but it looks like it’s dragging it’s feet cause it may need a trim? Again could be cause it’s an optical illusion 😂

If you're applying your legs to ask for the back up, how do you use your legs to ask for collection, assuming you're applying pressure with the reins to gather their boddies, then using leg to ask them to go forward?
    Thanks,

Legs means lift their back. They can lift their back in any direction, how my body is riding is what determines direction. Think about yourself riding, you don't ride forward the same way you ride backwards. Just like if you are going in a right circle your body is riding right not left. The horse should feel if I am riding forward or backwards just like left and right. The key here is you have to be riding, not sitting like a pessenger.

@@timandersonhorsetraining thank you, that really cleared things up! I'm guessing that is where your seat and intention are crucial to being clear to the horse. Thanks!
