      It looks like it will be worth it for me upgrading from original Vive. Better FOV, better resolution that supports wirelless? Yes please. I've been waiting for this so long.
      Anyway, you're suggesting getting Quest 2 facepad for Vive Pro 2? How does it fit?

    Great review and video! Now let me tell you a cautionary tale: Interestingly I just got my Pro 2 on Friday and was very excited. I set it up and everything was easy since I had set up Vive headsets before (Vive 1 and Elite) I played Gun Club and was happy enough, didn't notice too much in the way of improved graphics from my G2 but I was okay with that. Then I tried No Man's Sky and the picture was choppy as heck. The screen couldn't stop jumping and I couldn't get a consistent performance. I tried "everything", boosting my RTX 3070 using the X1, updating my Nvidia drivers, turning all my setting down in NMS, nothing was working. I thought maybe it could be that NMS just recently updated and maybe the game was not optimized well, however, it ran perfect on my G2 however, it is on my other rig with a 3090. I decided that I would plug my Elite back in and if that worked fine with the 3070 then it had to be a Vive Pro 2 issue and I would package the Vive Pro 2 up and return it. I'm glad I thought of doing one more thing before that. I went into the Vive display settings and saw that they had "Ultra 90hz" as the default so I tried two things, I turned it down to "High 90hz", that didn't work and as I reached my ultimate level of frustration, I decided just for S&G's to try "Extreme 120hz". I figured that if if couldn't even run on High how could it possibly run on Ultra? To my EXTREME surprise, when I changed it to 120hz, it ran like a dream and purred like a kitten!
    Lesson learned, this headset doesn't seem to play high end games on 90hz, if you get any issues on more demanding games using any of the 90hz settings, change the settings to the Extreme or Performance settings because those are 120hz. You may save yourself 2 hours of fiddling around.

    • @Jdbye

      I think it may have been coincidence. I can't get playable performance in No Man's Sky VR, whether I am using the G2 or the VP2, I get an "acceptable" framerate for only a few seconds (a very stuttery 20 something FPS) and then it drops into the single digits and my GPU frametime graph goes all purple. Been this way ever since I first tried it, switching to Native SteamVR hardly seems to have helped. I'm already running Ultra 120hz, and like 70% resolution scale for that game. Seems like it may be running out of VRAM and that's why it drops to single digit frames, however, lowering the VRAM related settings like textures did not help to prevent this from happening.

    I dont know why everyone says: Its only a good idea if you already own lighthouse. I am happy to finally go to lighthouse. I never wanted to go to the Index from the Reverb(G1) because the Index has a too small resolution, but this is finally a good reason to leave those clumsy HP controllers behind me and get a good tracking and a wider FOV

    The horizontal to vertical FOV ratio is my only gripe with the Vive pro 2. We all have spherical eyes which gives a 1:1 horizontal to vertical FOV ratio per eye. The lenses should have also been made with the same aspect ratio even if it meant reducing the Horizontal FOV slightly. This would have given us a better immersion compared to the letterbox symptom you were experiencing.

    This is such an excellent, comprehensive review. Thank you!
    I actually tried both an Index and a VP2, and ended up keeping the Index. Although I noticed an improvement in clarity with the VP2 over the Index, it didn't blow my mind. That said, I only tested the VP2 briefly, and am unsure if it was even set on the highest resolution!

    The Vive Pro 2 sounds like a interesting VR headset with the new features it provides. My decision is, do I want to go back to external trackers, which is to be determined. I would need to buy the whole system since I don't have any previous Vive products.
    I do SIM racing so inside out VR headsets work fine for me and have both the Rift S and HP G2 V2 headsets. G2 had a nice high Resolution, but still for me, a very narrow sweet spot, even with their plastic piece removed for closer eye contact. Rift S has a wider sweet spot and enjoy the headset, but would like a higher Resolution.
    Reading some Amazon reviews of the Vive Pro 2, some say the sweet spot is not very good. I don't want to pay 1300-1400 dollars for a headset that is not any better than my HP G2.
    So still in search for a good headset that has a wider sweet spot than my HP G2. I will pass on this headset for now. Too costly to try it out with sweet spot issues, clarity, and need for external trackers. Pimax is also out of the question, looks to cumbersome, finicky to setup, external trackers, etc.
    thanks for the review. take care.

The vertical FOV is the only thing that concern me (I was the guy that delayed switching from 4:3 monitors too 16:10 until I had no choice) but all the other improvement over my 2016 VIVE am currently using is enough for me to keep my preorder.

      Well I think you will be in for a real treat coming from the OG VIVE! The SDE on that was so bad. Even if you are someone who doesnt think its so bad or doesnt stop you getting immersed, I 100% guarantee that once you put on a newer high res HMD, you will not be able to go back.

  • @luckylanno
    @luckylanno 2 года назад +1

    I'm not listening with monitors, but I think I prefer the pro 2's audio based on what I am listening too. The Index sounds a little bit muddy, while the pro 2 sounds crisper. I think you can boost the bass in Windows audio settings to make the pro 2 sound deeper as well.

      Cant be talking about the vive pro 2 right? Vive pro 2 has way better clarity and a much larger sweet spot when wired I haven't used wirless yet so I can give an opion to that. I've owned a Rift a quest 2 a odysee+ and a cv1 kit and the vive pro 2 is much better as far as visuals go. The only thing I hate are the dumb ass controllers. Just a general comment with a question or two.
      What is it about the wands that gets sm hate?
      (Granted I’m a little biased as they were my ‘first’ Proper VR controllers, I love them to death ever since OG Vive. Index controllers are great, when I get a Vive Pro 2 {For like £500 cheaper} I’d probably keep the controllers and get Index controllers. Some games just feel better with Wands.)
      Edit: General Grammar / Spelling Corrections :)

    • @nagorak666
      @nagorak666 Год назад

      @@tigolbiddies5444 Personally I've never had a big problem with the wands. For certain games where you need to pull the trigger a lot I'd actually favor them over all other options.
      I think a lot of the hate for them may date back to the original Vive vs Oculus Rift, where the Vive wands were considered to be kind of large and bulky. (Personally the Rift controllers were a bit small for my hands, so I never liked them much.) And then the Index controllers now have better grabbing mechanics.
      I still use my Vive controllers more than half the time, but some people seemingly don't like them, so to each their own.

  • @lraiden7
    @lraiden7 3 года назад +1

    The big problem with VR now is lack of content! Oculus keeps promoting discount specials on software, but I just don't see anything else to buy. Aside from flight simulators, Half life and Pavlov, there really aren't that many reasons to buy such an expensive device. I look forward to the day when I can play something like Cyberpunk in VR. That would motivate me more to spend more on hardware.

    Just got my Vive pro 2 and thought I'd share my experience. Index owner here and I must say I was not impressed by the Vive pro 2. I was pretty optimistic after this review but I just could not enjoy it. I could have lived with the worse comfort and audio quality but the fov, sweet spot, glare and edge to edge clarity where pretty bad for me. I got 108 horizontal and 74 vertical (with 6mm face gasket, measured in vr tools) on Index I get 106 horizontal and 96 vertical (Pretty standard face dimensions and an ipd of 68mm) The resolution was obviously better and pretty noticeable, also the colors and blacks where a little better. Still, the entire experience as a whole felt like a big step down. I could not enjoy the improved resolution of the screen due all the issue's I had with the glare, sweet spot, etc. I can't really image a scenario I would prefer this over the index (tried, games, movies, etc.). Sad to say it but I will definitely return this

      This is what I was afraid about... I have the Vive PRO, I bought the index and I had to return the index because I couldn’t stand the colors and the blacks (greys). If you say the FOV is poorer it’s a deal breaker for me. Why would they choose to do a window thing...? It’s not good. I’ll have to pass on this one I guess.

Embarrassing that HTC forces customers to mod the so-called Pro HMD with third-party facial padding while still not getting the promised 120 degrees HFOV and wind filters to improve the quality of the cheap and poorly placed microphone. It's not about additional costs but the effort for business customers to subsequently remedy the laziness in product development. This should not happen when targeting companies as the main customer group. This always boggles me with HTC. At least not as disastrous as with Cosmos.

    really didn’t expect another base station VR headset release. Guess I shouldn’t have sold my base stations. Goes to show that nobody really knows what’s going on in the market until it happens.

  • @Jdbye
    @Jdbye 2 года назад

    I have the G2, but I already invested in base stations and Index controllers to improve the experience. So I just placed an order for a Vive Pro 2 yesterday, because I am sick of technical issues with WMR and I want to be rid of it. Sometimes my headset only gives me 3DOF tracking and it makes me motion sick, and I have no idea what the issue is, it takes multiple tries restarting and rebooting everything to fix and sometimes takes me 30+ minutes before it works properly again. I can probably get about $500 back selling my G2 with all the accessories I have for it, so the upgrade doesn't actually cost me that much. And now knowing that the performance will be better too (I expected it to be worse and my 2080 Super already struggles with some games like No Man's Sky and VRChat on the G2) I'm happy about my decision. Shame about the microphone though. I've already placed an order for some of those pop filters, but even with that, there is still some popping in your test and the mic just doesn't sound very good. But it's good enough and still better than Rift S and Quest mics that so many people are using. But it will be a downgrade from the G2 and I really liked the floating headphones too. It's like magic feeling like I'm not wearing anything on my ears and yet the sound is all around me. But I'll probably get used to it.

    • @Jdbye
      @Jdbye 2 года назад

      I received the VP2. It's a *big* downgrade over the G2 in terms of image, the image just doesn't seem sharp at all, text in SteamVR (like when looking at my desktop) is noticeably blurry with soft fuzzy edges, and makes me want to squint to read it more easily, which should not be the case when looking at a 1080p image, the VP2's resolution is so far above 1080p. That is really a huge shame, because the Vive Pro 2 is *so* much more comfortable than the G2, I didn't realize how uncomfortable the G2 was because I didn't have anything to compare it with until now.
      I am using my old glasses though. I have prescription lenses on the G2 which I had to get because the G2 did not fit well over my glasses and they were pushed against my head. But I need to design and 3D print a new mount to fit them on the VP2.
      My old glasses are too weak (by about 1.0, my glasses are -3.25 but my actual eyesight is -4.5), it does not bother me in normal use, so I did not think that it would be making the image blurry, since I am only trying to look at objects that are relatively up close, it shouldn't make such a night and day difference. But maybe, some of my qualms about the sharpness of the screens can be solved with the right strength glasses or prescription lenses. For sure it will still be less sharp than the G2, but right now, edges look very blurry even on lower resolution content like looking at text on my desktop, I feel it should not be this bad, it makes it hard to read, and feels more like 1.5K screens than 2.5K.
      I don't want to go back to Windows Mixed Reality with its software issues and jank, or the front heavy G2 that always feels like it's pressing on my head no matter how I adjust it. The VP2 just kind of sits there, perfectly balanced without feeling like it squeezes on any part of my head, it feels like it might even fall off if I move my head quickly, but still feels like it's well aligned and positioned without needing to tighten it, the G2 needs to be tight until it squeezes my face or the headset will slip down on my face and I can't get a good alignment.
      I wish there was another Native SteamVR headset that could compete with or exceed the G2 in specs and actual picture and audio quality. But there doesn't seem to be anything. Maybe the Varjo Aero, but I don't have €2000. So I'm not sure what to do, I really want to be rid of WMR but the VP2 is such a big downgrade in the graphics area. At least the increased FOV is quite nice, it feels like the horizontal FOV is pretty close to the useful FOV of my eyes, I can just about move my eye to look centered at the edge of the screen, beyond that it would quickly start getting blurry if I had more peripheral just due to not being able to focus my eyes directly on it, not that peripheral vision isn't useful, but actually it feels like it's covering most of my horizontal FOV now.
      The other downgrades, like the audio, are things I can get used to. Even the glare, I think I could get used to, as it's mostly visible around the edges, and I am used to keeping my eyes in the center anyway where the image is the most clear. The glare used to bother me when I first got the G2 but now I hardly ever notice it at all. I notice it much more on the VP2 but still will probably get used to it eventually.
      The headphones touching my ears doesn't bother me, because they barely touch them and they feel like super soft pillows. But one thing I didn't realize, is that they muffle my voice when I talk. Which is distracting when playing something like VRChat, where I'm talking a lot. You have the same issue with regular headphones too of course, but I thought it might not happen here because they only touch your ears, they don't go over/around them or squeeze them like normal headphones. But I got used to that with headphones so might get used to it here too. I am considering a USB-C adapter (I assume an ordinary USB sound card would also work, and I have one of those I could test if I buy a USB-C to male USB adapter) to use my own headphones, if I need something touching my ears anyway, I have way better headphones than this that don't squeeze on my head and the VP2 strap goes well clear of my ears so there is plenty of space even to wear big headphones, they designed it well.

      @@sonsolar How did you find the black levels compared to the G2? Is it that much of a noticeable difference? I'm leaning more towards the G2 but black levels was one of the main factors that will sway my decision. I imagine the glare of the vp2 kind of ruins the black levels in some cases though, like it did with the Index.
      Also weight - vp2 is extremely heavy so, is it noticeably less comfortable? I found the index way too heavy, which is similar weight to the vp2.

    12:40 as an audiophile myself, listening to these clips on a $30 000 audio system, it sounds way more balanced and refined on the Pro 2. But hard to capture headphone audio properly, so who knows. I haven't bothered to test them on my Pro 2, as I use a fairly high-end surround system on my gaming rig, and I only play sitting down.
    Except the occasional glare, I'm pretty happy with my Pro 2. The sweet spot is way bigger than on my previous Pro (1) and the OG Vive, for sure. Still some screen door effect, but it's almost good enough for desktop use.

    Maybe its just me, but to me the Pro 2's audio sounded better? I mean it definitely has room for improvement as its too tinny & needs a bit more bass, but to me the Index's bass was WAY too strong and drowned out the rest of the song, I'm not sure how an audiophile would prefer overpowering bass over non-overpowering bass. But maybe it can be adjusted somewhere to be less-bassy.
    Although maybe that's just me, I do find my choice of headphones is very limited because I find most everything too bassy, even the razer blackshark v2 x which was highly praised for its audio quality, with lots of reviews I watched & read saying it was "Very well balanced", only for me to try it with music & games & finding its bass not as overpowering as some headphones I've used, but still greatly exaggerating the bass. This was with the proper software too, and even after trying to adjust it & trying its different modes, I couldn't make it sound comfortable, like my current Hyper X Stinger headphones which to my ears have a good audio balance. (not cloud stinger)
    Maybe one day I'll get to try both vr sets in person to tell what I like more :P

    It looks like there are 2 microphones on the Vive Pro 2, but you only put a pop filter on the bottom one. Would putting a pop filter on both of them perhaps help reduce the issue even more than just putting one on the bottom one, since popping was still quite apparent with just one filter?
    I'll be putting one on both of them, in any case. It can't hurt.

    Regarding the sweetspot - from my personal experience with both the Valve Index and the HP Reverb G2 I can tell that the sweetspot and the edge-to-edge clrarity was noticeably better in the Valve Index for me - what does this mean? - It means take this info in the reviews very careful - you MAY NOT assume that one has better sweetspot than the other - it depends greatly on your shape of head, etc. From what I have overall heard though - I believe the Oculus headsets might really have the tendency to have better sweetspots than these high-end headsets (I can't confirm this as I only had the oculus rift, which had a way too low resolution to be able to judge the sweetspot well in my opinion)

    I got one because it is heavily discounted now, it can be had for 529 euros where I am but, after testing it with lighthouse and Index controllers VS a friends Index kit, I decided to send it back and just get the Index. Yes picture quality is better, tracking is the same (ish, I did get some tracking inconsistencies) and for my face it is slightly more comfortable but almost everything else is worse:
    -glare is worse, with distinct Fresnel rings visible;
    -smaller sweet spot and worse edge to edge clarity;
    -because of the small focused area, the image overall has a blurry vibe to it;
    -speakers are worse, less dynamic range as far as I can tell;
    -gets noticeably hotter and I didn't even try to disable the Variable Automatic Lighting, which is supposed to make it even hotter, if that is still a valid option with the current drivers/software;
    -the software is still buggy. I just played two games, HL Alyx and Beat Saber for 4-5 hours in total and I got a decent amount of errors, from the games POV just breaking, and me getting in a random position unable to move, to the VIVE console reporting all sorts of errors that required restarts;
    Needless to say that in the same scenarios, the Index behaved flawlessly.
    I know they are both old products by now but maybe this is helpful for somebody.
