    A useful addition: You can lay out a circuit of conduits on the roof floor before you put it on the house, perhaps with one connection point that goes outside on both ends, so you can attach wires and generators to it. Then your whole house has an invisible electric grid that you can use to light it up.

    Just started playing Fallout 4 this week (which is crazy because I bought it at release and bought my Xbox specifically for it and it's been on a shelf in cellophane all this time). Found your videos and they're incredibly helpful. But the biggest appeal is your attitude. You're so friendly and clearly having fun. It makes your videos so pleasant to watch, heads above others. The wealth of useful information doesn't hurt either. I also looove that you use no mods. My first playthrough will be mod free and very few RUclipsrs don't use mods! It's been hard to find tips that I can actually use. Thanks for your hard work! 😄

    A tip that is less about practical building and more about population control:
    If you do a lot of the Minutemen settlement quests, you may end up with several beacons summoning settlers, which means you could find yourself with more settlers than you've got space for.
    But, if you like building settlements, you may want a flow of new settlers to send to places.
    So, once you complete a "build a beacon" quest, disconnect the beacon. Don't just turn it off, sometimes they turn back on when you're not around.
    Then, designate one or two settlements as "recruitment centers" and let them keep their beacons. Even if you stay away a long time, they will only keep recruiting until there are four unemployed settlers in them.
    Then, when you return you can order the new people to move to a place you have already prepared, instead of setting up beacons everywhere. You can also use the recruitment centers to drop off gear you picked up but don't want to use, and give it to the settlers you send away.

    My tweak to this will be to install a few lights just inside that window area so that when I power the house up later, they will already be in place and light will shine out through the attic area. I might play with some other window types to let more light out also. I love approaching my buildings at night and seeing the lights shine through. Makes it feel more lived in. Civilization is returning to the wasteland and all...

    UPDATE: Some people have mentioned that they're having trouble with this technique on a PS4. A viewer helped identify that it could be because of a number of terrain altering mods (such as "Scrap that Settlement"). Try temporarily disabling or uninstalling those kind of mods and see if the reroofing technique works. He was able to enable STS after doing the technique and the scrapped items were scrapped again.

    You can add a wall in the corner of the structure then put a rug next to it. Then you can group select on the rug and line the wall up with the corner of the house that corresponds with the corner of the roof you built. this makes it much easier to line up the first time. You can also add more walls to fill in the holes in the wall.

    On my last play through I scrapped all of the houses in Sanctuary and their contents down to the foundations and built Vault Houses in their place. As for the house with the Workbench in it, I made that area the Community Center. It was 2 floors high 5x7 with roofed porches on all 4 sides and bathrooms on both floors. Around the Community Center was the farm (sides and back). The first floor was the Crafting Floor and 4th grade shops. The second floor was the restaurant/dining area. The 2nd floor was filled with tables and chairs. On the 2nd story wraparound porch was a bunch of couches and coffee tables. Plenty of space for over 30 people to sit and chill. Sanctuary Vault City turned out great! I absolutely loved it!

      From what I've seen trying to patch all those houses the roof slopes are angled more than the barn/factory roof's so if you start at the base where the original roof starts then the old roof will poke out at the top. Annoying that they did that.

      I have never used any mods on any Bethesda game, since whats the point of leveling or even playing if you just can spawn everything and instantly be level 600

    • @jamiehicks8835
      @jamiehicks8835 5 лет назад +38

      nils holgerson if you’ve never used any mods your really missing out. A lot of mods massively improve the games, I could never play vanilla now. And you don’t have to use cheat mods, i don’t. But better looking weapons, much better companions, improved workshop elements and better graphics? Yeah I’m all for that!

      Jamie Hicks where do you get mods ? I’m on pc and do they cost money ? Is it through the game or a do I have to go to a website ? New fall out 4 player

    • @jamiehicks8835
      @jamiehicks8835 5 лет назад +12

      blakestilltippin I’m an Xbox player so my knowledge of pc fallout is limited.
      However on console fallout has a mods category on the main menu of the game. Sign up for a Bethesda account and download from within the game for free. You can also view them on Bethesda.net. Don’t go crazy at first though and do some reading on load orders or you could end up breaking your game. (Random crashes etc)
      This would be a good place to start docs.google.com/document/d/1aknl_ze1hHUCiTBgz55dSzBBsfvG7iGXlRNIGWObyME/mobilebasic#h.abqdihvmac7u
      There is also a category called creation club. This is Bethesda’s own mods category, these require no knowledge of modding, it’s all done for you and don’t disable achievements. However they are very limited in number and are paid!
      Being a pc player you’ve got the advantage of being able to get mods from the nexus too. This is by far the best place to get mods. But stick to Bethesda.net until you’ve got some experience.
      Sorry for the long post, but a lot of stuff to get through. Have fun 👍

    This is sort of how my grandpa built a roof for his house (it was more of a shelter for two singlewides, but still). He bought two used single wide trailers at auction, but they both had leaky roofs. Instead of trying to fix a leaky trailer, he knocked both of them together, and built a roof that covered both of them. Of course, not being able to defy physics, it had to be built in place, but a similar concept.

    not sure if its an issue specifically with the next gen update, but it just doesn't work. ive been messing around with it for around 5-6 hours now, and i can get the upper shack floors without walls or roofs to place kinda okay with the pillar giltch, but once i add walls and roofs, it doesnt place inside any building. cant even place the pillar outside the house either. the only valid placemnt is the foundation platform i orginally built it on. kind of frustrating, but if anyone figures it out, please let me know how to solve this lmao

    Videos like this are super useful as I put together my perfect "starting" save in Fallout 4:
    - Most settlements unlocked and built up until they look like major landmarks from afar. Combining every good idea I had from previous saves into one so I don't have to switch characters to do a demonstration.
    - Avoiding all quests that have stories attached to them, meaning I won't be having Finch Farm or Egret Tours and haven't even gone back to Sanctuary yet. No Diamond City. Likely avoiding Murkwater and The Castle for now just to save the Queen Mirelurks for later.
    - Perks and stats only supporting settlement building and movement. No immunities, no weapon perks. No maxing lockpicking. No aqua-person. All immersive limitations still in place. Only early investment perks that are non-specific like Fortune Finder and Idiot Savant. Adamantium Skeleton to help avoid the 1 perception glitch.
    - Minimum locations discovered. Minimum map traversal to preserve random encounters. (Though settlement turrets do catch a lot of strays.)
    - No companions except Dogmeat.
    - Don't rob Trashcan Carla.
    Etc.
