    Had my first experience with a snakehead yesterday. Broke my 20lb braid, and took my favorite crankbait. I had no idea what it was, until I saw it come up and stalk the lure. I’ll be going back with a frog and 65lb braid.

    Great tips, noticed you didn't talk about walking the frog. Was there a reason for that or did it just slip your mind? I've found it's a great way to work a traditional frog slowly and loudly. But ,of course with them missing quite a bit, it definitely just makes it that much harder for them to get the frog. Usually I'll walk it a foot or two, let it sit, rinse repeat.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  Год назад

      That’s definitively something worth talking about, but it didn’t occur to me at the time.
      I usually don’t walk my frogs that much. It’s more of a twitch or popping retrieve.
      However, there are some small, thin profile hollow body mice that I like to walk because they do it so well.
      As for my overall opinion on it, I like a tight walking action for snakehead. I don’t want to do anything to make it easier for them to miss it 😏

    I quit chasing these things because I just don't have that much time to spend on them. It's very rare I get a full day to fish, and spending that day trying to catch these things when they're shut down is just more frustration than it's worth. Good tips, but some days they just want to watch your lure swim past--especially after they've seen a few years of pressure and a lot of catch and release.

    Curious how you determine when you want to harvest a fish or not?

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  Год назад +2

      Depends on a few things usually. First, I generally only keep fish between 19-29 inches and release those outside that range.
      Second, there are some waters I’ll fish in but won’t keep fish from due to water quality concerns.
      Third, it depends on how full my freezer is 😏
      Last point: I won’t keep fish off a fry ball.

    Seen the videos of snakeheads eating largemouth yet?? Turns that biologists jargin pretty moot.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  Год назад +1

      Every predatory fish in the water eats each other at different life stages. That doesn’t in any way disprove a scientific study which measures community composition and population levels over years long studies.

    • @dhooter
      @dhooter Год назад

      @@KambotroutFishing The biologist said it himself. The jury is still out. Don't get me wrong I enjoy catching them. There is nothing scientific about nature. I myself have seen the impact this fish has done to smaller tributaries. Snakeheads are 10 times the predator then any other freshwater in my area. Just yesterday I was watching a large one trying to pick off redwing blackbirds. I've watched smaller snakehead tearing baby Canadian geese apart. I've cut guts open and haven't found anything they won't eat. Like I said I love catching them but they are doing damage. Yes there are other preditory fish. Our native fish are not nearly as predisposed to survive like them. I've cut gills dragged them behind a canoe for hours. Shoved them in ice just to find them alive the next day. Now I just shoot them with a 22.
