Vivid mode means banding a few similar colors together into a brighter color. So you actually see less color variations and details. The problem is when you're viewing an already oversaturated content. It looks like an unrealistic oversaturated mess.

@@bltzcstrnx a lot of users prefer the highly saturated option. It might not be RGB colour accurate, but it's more fun to look at. I think it's not only on the Ultra. I have an S24+ and the colors also look dull. I have an S21 FE as well, and the colors look really saturated in comparison. If I set the S21 Fe colors to natural, it looks almost the same as vivid on my S24.
I got my S22 U side by side with my S24 U and the colour vibrancy on the S22 is leagues ahead. Visiting the Samsung forums, they are well aware of this issue and they should be pushing out a SOFTWARE fix in the next update.
I found the link to Samsung forum whilst on Reddit and they replied saying they are aware and it will be fixed asap, sorry I'm not sure what I searched to come across it but you can take my word for it.
EXACTLY!!! Thank goodness u made this video!! im usng the S24+ and Im so pissed that the screen is not in vivid mode at all!! Changing between the modes doesnt do anything!! This screen issue and the navigation gesture issue makes the S24 series bad...
Thanks for pointing that out. I have the same situation with my S24 Ultra. Colors arent as vivid as it used to be on my old S20 Ultra. Hopefully Samsung's gonna fix it soon.
@@artemisia_asteraceae Yeap! Iv ordered mine on Currys website a day after the official unboxing. I was waiting just 6 days and it was delivered as scheduled. Quite quick I would say.
Thank you. Very helpful video. Another point, about the inconsistent colours in low brightness levels have you noticed anything? Mine's really inconsistent, showing banding or some lines in low brightness levels. The previous S23 Ultra I had doesn't have any problems with it. Thank you again, good video!
My phone looks exactly like the S23U. Side by side, they look identical in my house and office. When we get some sun, I will go outside. This issue seems over blown. I do wonder if people have the adaptive color tone turned on. I turned that on and it immediately dulled the screen.
It isn't just the S24 Ultra. I'm comparing the base S24 to my Huawei P30 in those 4K 10hr videos, and the P30 beats it hands down. The colours are better, the colour range is better, even sharpness is better. like wtf.
I thought I was going mad as my S24+ barely changes between Natural and Vivid, and with the phone in Vivid the images look very desaturated and slightly green. Using the advance settings and the RGB sliders don't do a thing.
*UPDATE: I kind of found a FIX* (until they release a software update). This is 100% a software issue. Samsung have stated that the display on S24 Ultra is 100% DCIP rated on their product page on their website. *Here is the temporary fix* (which is not as good as the actual "vivid" option from previous Samsung phones but still better). Go to Display settings, turn ON the "Extra Brightness" option. You will notice the colours pop a little more along with brightness. - Disable "Eye Comfort shield" if it's already on and the Adaptive tone also, disable them. - Now go to the "Vivid" option, turn the temperature to the coldest setting. This should improve the colours a tiny bit too. *WARNING:* Turning on the "Extra Brightness" increases battery drain a little though so turn on the "Light" option in "Performance Profile" section to kind of balance it out. Crazy we have to do these on a brand new $1300 flagship to have a usable display. FIX THIS SHIT ASAP SAMSUNG!!!
Thank you thank you thank you - finally someone doing a proper analysis of the issue. I contacted Samsung support about it and was told that the day one update for the entire S24 line should be released imminently and to apply that - hopefully it will fix it, because right now this screen is a massive downgrade compared to my S23 Ultra.

I never trusted paid youtubers. They want to make money through links and that's why they asking us to use links. I canceled my preorder and keeping s22U until next year
@qwerttzizzi I don't think it has anything to do with the anti reflective properties of the s24U. I noticed the colour disparity when I went from the s22+ to my new s24+. It was remarkably noticeable. Since this is affecting the s24 series, then the issue has to be something more central or common to all. The DCI-P3 colour settings could be the issue as it was shown that the last 2 generations of the S-series had better settings for this parameter. Even when I try to change the picture quality from natural to vivid, the screen stays the same.
Thank you for being one of the only youtubers to address this issue compared to other youtubers like marques brownlee and zack from jerryrigeverything who signed NDAs and get paid by samsung to keep their mouths shut. We need people to shine light on these problems or they will never get fixed
I have S24 exynos and can confirm, changing between vivid and natural does not make any difference... The screen is even a bit more dull than on my previous 5 year old Oneplus 6 XD Waiting for the "day 1" patch continues...
Sorry to ask an off topic question. How long have you been using the S24 Exynos ? I've been looking to buy this one but I'm worried about any heating issues of Exynos. Yes I saw NL Tech's video on this model and he said no heating issues. But I wanted to ask your input as a user.
@@pkoppula I got it on the 24th, so 3 days total. I haven't noticed any heating issues, but I'm not really a heavy user. Also keep in mind that I have a Spigen clear case - during normal use it's cold(browsing web, youtube, discord, messenger), while playing MH Now it's only slightly warm, in Genshin 60fps medium settings it got a little bit warmer to the touch but nothing worrying(I didn;t try touching it directly only through the case). As for the battery I charged in the evening to 90% it lasted the whole next day while playing MH Now on and off.
I thought i was just being crazy when i noticed this on my s24u. Glad im not the only one, really hope this is fixable in a software update and isnt just a unfixable hardware issue due to the anti reflective screen...
coming from a s23 ultra i didn't notice any difference, but i've never set it to Vivid, always been using natural mode. But i can confirm switching to vivid doesn't make much difference, it's very very subtle
Could there be a connection between the S24 new 2600 nits brightness displays and the washed out colors? Could that be the culprit of this whole thing? 🤔
Completely agree SOFTWARE. I noticed testing both natural and vivid no change. Went through all settings side by side S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra. Turning on extra brightness feature and turning off adaptive helps but still doesn't have the beautiful experience of the S23 Ultra. Photos at night, especially indoors struggling. Another software issue.
Wow... this update is taking too long!! Meanwhile, some users are even returning the S24 ultra due to problems with the screen, performance and camera.
@@geo2160 Makes sense but that should be well publized. Many reviewers seem to neglect this if indeed the case! It could reduce alot of anxiety and needless reviews on what is or isn't
The fact that practically no reviewers mentioned this difference in their videos says a lot. I would wait to try a phone before buying, but if I want the pre order deals the only thing I have are the reviewers. Shills 🙄. Thanks for your video btw
What do you think of Samsung's latest statement about the washed colour on the s24u. Their explanation does not make sense to me. If they are trying to replicate more natural colour with the vivid setting, then they should display that colour palette under the natural setting and boost the colour under the vivid setting to be in line with users expectations. Their reasoning also does not explain the dci-p3 colour gamut of 88.7% on the s24u compared 99.9% for the s23u and s22u.
No, I use normal mode and it def looks diff than my S22U's natural too. People like natural mode so they know what the photos they share will look like on their friend's phones
thank you bro for addressing this - i mean it's so obvious I am transferring stuff from S22U to S24U and the difference is in your face! the S22U has the usual pop but not the 24... they better do this. Sammy's signature is vivid as in real bright but the 24 looks so dull and grey
I will share the video on all the networks I have and even in the comments of other technology RUclipsrs so that Samsung can see it and correct this tremendous error, thank you for your dedication, Like and new subscriber
Have you noticed any differences in signal strength. There are some complains about poor signal on S24Ultra. Maybe there are differences in wifi speeds too since Ultra supports Wifi 7 unlike S24 and S24+ Wifi 6e. Thanks again for another informative video btw.
Thanks for the information. I was so excited when I got the phone but got so annoyed when I saw the quality; cuz the main reason I upgraded my phone was only bcuz of AI & the camera. Now what? It's dull? Hell no. SAMSUNG NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE ASAP! 😤 They also changed many other things in the settings which is super disappointing. 😒 specially the gestures!
This is what I got from the S team. The Galaxy S24 series has adjusted colours and brightness for more accurate and comfortable vision while using. We have made some changes to the display technology to offer a more natural viewing experience, so you may notice differences in colour depth when compared to older devices. This behaviour of the display is an intended colour adjustment and is not a defect of the product, so you can use it with confidence. 😮
Thanks for the great video explaining the dull color issue on the S24 Ultra. I hope @Samsung is watching. Hopefully they provide a software update to correct the issue.
Samsung had better address this soon, because many who are trading in a devvice are saying they won't wait past the two week return time frame to send back their S24U. This is quality control issue for Samsung and should have been addressed before shipping the devices.
Here's the thing. Yes the s24ultra screen is dull as hell but I hope it's not on purpose. Because my note 9 was the most beautiful vivid display, then the note 20 ultra not as vivid, then comparing the note 20 ultra to the s22ultra, the s22u was duller than the note. I'm seeing a pattern here where each upgrade it becomes duller than before. You all might not remember the vividness of the note 9/8/7 they were sharp. You may be thinking the s20 is vivid but it wasn't compared to the previous models. Samsung copied apple with the titanium, the look of s24 and the AOD. It makes sense they are trying to mimic the natural screen tone of the iPhone. I hope it isn't true but there is a pattern of the screens getting duller and closer to natural tone. I miss the note 9, best samsung phone ever made. Came with headphones charger spen accessories, I got a hongkong model and was even sent a case and screen protector on the side. Now we get a Sim ejector tool and a useless usb c cord.
I hope Samsung fixes this problem very fast. The vibrant and saturated colors with great contrast always have been a Samsung signature for their Oled screens.
I reached out to Samsung Belgium about this issue today and they definitely did NOT admit it was a bug. They say it's exactly the way it has to be, because they made some changes to the colourscheme to make everything look more natural... So I'm afraid that update will never come - as they don't see the problem. I'm a photographer, so I really need the good colors in pictures- not the washed out ones, so I can edit accurately. It has me doubting for days now, should I return it and get an S23 ultra - or keep the S24 ultra.
You should test with P3 images, It seems that the coverage test was conducted using an sRGB image (an image without an ICC profile or with an ICC profile of sRGB). Please test with an image that includes DCI-P3 or Display P3 ICC profile.
Samsung uk told me it would be fixed but no time frame. Now we have a choice of sending back, loseing the pre order deals or waiting and risk being stuck with the issue. I have noticed that HDR videos look great, next to my s23u I cant see a difference, and the same when viewing photos.
Thank you for scientifically proving I'm not crazy thinking my S24 Ultra screen looked terrible. I know you focused on color accuracy in your testing but I also noticed how dim the screen is compared to my S22 and Flip5. Would be great if you could test this as well and see if the S24 is actually living up to Samsung's claim that this is their brightest phone screen yet.
I think youre just picky, the colours look identical to my s23 ultra and the .5% SRGB difference literally doesnt make a difference to the eye. And the brightness has been tested and its by far the brightest
@@anonym5510 Great that you can accept what appears to be a inferior display. Based on all the posts on the internet about this issue, seems like there are tons of us picky people out here that want our moneys worth and to get a display that is at least as good or better than our older phones.

@@bltzcstrnx a lot of users prefer the highly saturated option. It might not be RGB colour accurate, but it's more fun to look at. The problem is Samsung have left us with no choice but a natural look and have rendered the vivid mode pointless. The users that like the natural setting still have that, so I don't know why they're getting involved??
Great review! I have a S23+ and was considering upgrading, but I think I'll wait until they fix the bugs, or wait till the S25 comes out. Keep up the good work! You're on my follow list now!
3 things i wish Samsung address in the next update
1. Vivid colour
2.camera quality
3. BRING BACK THE OLD SWIPE NAV GESTURE
Edit: Navstar brought back the old swipe gesture yippieee
Yes, I miss the old swipe soooo much.
Oooo you like the swiping gesture with 3 separate sections at the bottom?
@@NasiLemakTech yes, the button layout but swipe up. Much simpler and samsung need to let us hide the bar like one UI 6.0.
@@jjjc20 interesting. I didn't know they removed it.
SAME!!!! I hope Samsung hears our voice. I'm so disappointed otherwise
So, it is sortable in a software update! Thank God. It was hard for me because I had spent a fortune to buy it.
HAHA...!
@@Bhavin734 What!?
I might send it back still, who knows when they'll sort it if ever
well said! hope they release a update and FIX this and stop saying its supposed to be like this, which it is not.
What about the grain on gray background in lowlight conditions? Is this a related issue?
I think it's not only on the Ultra. I have an S24+ and the colors also look dull. I have an S21 FE as well, and the colors look really saturated in comparison. If I set the S21 Fe colors to natural, it looks almost the same as vivid on my S24.
I also have the S21 FE so I just got the S24 + but returned it do you think they will fix it by the S25?
I got my S22 U side by side with my S24 U and the colour vibrancy on the S22 is leagues ahead.
Visiting the Samsung forums, they are well aware of this issue and they should be pushing out a SOFTWARE fix in the next update.
S22 refelction is also horrible
@@saint5382 No it's not.
Where is the source? The bloody samsung 'expert' is telling me to bring the phone in for a physical check. I am so fking pissed off right now.
You already received s24 ultra?😮
@@artemisia_asteraceaeI'm also going to ask the same question. The Samsung store where I pre-ordered said that my phone only arrive at 7 of February.
@@artemisia_asteraceae Yeap! Iv ordered mine on Currys website a day after the official unboxing. I was waiting just 6 days and it was delivered as scheduled. Quite quick I would say.
@@bltzcstrnxYes, many carriers in the US delivered them on Friday. Other countries, like Turkey, got them days earlier.
@@BoomSlang001 sigh, this means my country is very late. Probably one of the last country to receive it.
My S24U looks better than my S23U with low brightness. My S23U looks grainey, but the S24U looks great. I wonder if some batches have problems.
Was wondering why my S24 Ultra looks so 'washed out', thanks for the information!
Go to Display settings,
turn ON the "Extra Brightness" option.
FIX THIS SHIT ASAP SAMSUNG!!!
yeah, you are the only one on RUclips who addresses this issue. huge tanks. ❤
It's a total downgrade even compared to my S10+ & I'm super annoyed right now 😐
@@K_halmiland I'm literally just waiting for this alleged day 1 update, if it doesn't fix it then I'm sending it back and keeping my S23 Ultra :-(

@gambiting They will wait until the return window close .....This update need to be checked, really bad before they can send ot worldwide and that take more than 15 days
Thank you for addressing this.
The issue that bugs me most is a white point color shift when you look straight down on the screen and then tilt the phone at an angle.
S24+ vs S23+....S23 has better color performance
So it's just a bug of Vivid mode not turning on... so simple yet caused to much drama. Natural mode is better anyway so.. whatever
Good vid, will make sure to share it whenever I see someone wrong on this subject.
Great video👍I can confirm that the colors on the S24 Plus look dull compared to my S20. I hope that it's just a software issue and that there is a fix to it. In the meantime I'm going to return my S24 Plus, just in case, and wait until they fix this issue. If they do fix the problem, then I'll buy one again.
Thanks for giving real review on display issue. Cancelled my preorder and will keep S22 Ultra.
I commented on the dull display on two big RUclips reviewers and they deleted my comments. Reported this to RUclips.
I never trusted paid youtubers. They want to make money through links and that's why they asking us to use links. I canceled my preorder and keeping s22U until next year
Just curious on which youtubers are those. So we know who to avoid in future
@skythz85 all paid youtubers with millions subscribers. If they tell us the truth they are not gonna make money through links or can lose contract))
Just tested on my s24+, it changes very very slightly when I switch to natural from vivid
you mean the yellow to the blue color
Yes i have noticed the dimming colour when comparing my s24+ and s22+. I hope this is fixed in the next round of software updates
It even is with S24+??
But s24+ doesnt have a antireflecting screen..
@@qwerttzizzidid you even watch the video?

THANK YOU. I knew instantly there was something broken. Too many blind deniers out there.
I have S24 exynos and can confirm, changing between vivid and natural does not make any difference... The screen is even a bit more dull than on my previous 5 year old Oneplus 6 XD
Waiting for the "day 1" patch continues...

Didn't he just prove that it's software issue and not the screen hardware, in this video?
Wow such detailed testing and understanding AND hes using the S21 Ultra still like me? Wow my friend you have earned a loyal subscriber 😂
coming from a s23 ultra i didn't notice any difference, but i've never set it to Vivid, always been using natural mode.
Yeah, gotta wait for the fix. Supposedly, it's coming this week.
Wow... this update is taking too long!! Meanwhile, some users are even returning the S24 ultra due to problems with the screen, performance and camera.
@@awesleyjazzblues That's what they get for releasing a phone at such a state. Hope they learn a lesson.
@@geo2160 Makes sense but that should be well publized. Many reviewers seem to neglect this if indeed the case! It could reduce alot of anxiety and needless reviews on what is or isn't
that's weird. A prerelease firmware should be the same for all phones. Why would one work different from another??@@geo2160
The fact that practically no reviewers mentioned this difference in their videos says a lot. I would wait to try a phone before buying, but if I want the pre order deals the only thing I have are the reviewers. Shills 🙄. Thanks for your video btw
You have 15 days to return the phone. You can try it yourself.
Very true, I have until the 5th Feb to send it back. Just a shame 😢
For verizon $50 restock fee!
Nothing makes sense now lmao. Gonna wait until the update arrives
Good video! I noticed it yesterday comparing my S24U with my S23U, much much better and vivid colors on S23U, regreted to have changed!
The problem is most youtubers use natural mode and most normal users use vivid mode
@samsung should fix this bug, display looks like old phone on 24 series
Honest and to the point ❤
i tried to switch between vivid and natural and there is a difference, but its very very small.
If you switch to the yellow to the blue it's a huge difference but the blue is way to "bright" and uses more battery so I had to return my S24
I will share the video on all the networks I have and even in the comments of other technology RUclipsrs so that Samsung can see it and correct this tremendous error, thank you for your dedication, Like and new subscriber
thanks for this video please do more videos about this topic. the displays are pretty bad at this state
Thankyou for addressing this. My s24 ultra has the same problem.
Have you noticed any differences in signal strength. There are some complains about poor signal on S24Ultra.
Maybe there are differences in wifi speeds too since Ultra supports Wifi 7 unlike S24 and S24+ Wifi 6e.
Thanks again for another informative video btw.
Signal is rock solid on mine, no problem here.
They also changed many other things in the settings which is super disappointing. 😒 specially the gestures!
Antireflective isn't causing anything , its a software issue, it just got fixed today.
Bravo ! Good job !! In Poland , our testers cant see the problem ...shame ..
Also people on X/twitter complains that the color of pictures taken with s24 ultra is dull or not as color accurate as the iPhone's...
😅
Thus the ~$1000 off 😂. Tells you pretty much the mark up.
Not more...oversaturation is gone.
Well if you use a screen protector (as most of us do) antireflecting screen is usless
Vivid and natural is okay..but what about grainy or paper like feel in grey areas
Try wiping cache partition
I reached out to Samsung Belgium about this issue today and they definitely did NOT admit it was a bug. They say it's exactly the way it has to be, because they made some changes to the colourscheme to make everything look more natural...
So I'm afraid that update will never come - as they don't see the problem. I'm a photographer, so I really need the good colors in pictures- not the washed out ones, so I can edit accurately. It has me doubting for days now, should I return it and get an S23 ultra - or keep the S24 ultra.
You should test with P3 images,
It seems that the coverage test was conducted using an sRGB image (an image without an ICC profile or with an ICC profile of sRGB).
Please test with an image that includes DCI-P3 or Display P3 ICC profile.
We use DisplayCal. Everything is already taken into consideration
@Nitro2K11 you must be confusing "good display" with "oversaturated display"
@@anonym5510 Probably because your S23 is in the natural display mode and you're used to it looking dull and terrible. Clearly Samsung has the hardware capability to give us the option to choose between dull and vibrant and I expect to be able to choose this on a phone that costs this much...
I switched from s22u to s24u and I saw the screen is dull too. Thanks for pointing out.

There definitely is a differences. It's subtle but it's there. look at the oranges when you stitch from vivid snd natural. you can even see the shift in the video if know what to look for.
People also report color banding and grainy screens. Those issues wouldn't be related to the same dull color issue.
I'm facing the same problem! But not only the screen feels dull, but the screen also leans too strong toward a greenish gray under medium to low brightness
Oh dear sounds like hardware
@@KoalaBeer. The greenish grays that are definitely noticeable might be hardware but the dull colors are definitely software, there is no way that they intended vivid and natural to look exactly identical
Thanks just got mine last night and immediately noticed the dull colors on the display.
After messing with all the settings I could to try and fix it I finally started googling and realized I wasn't crazy. This phone is just actually dull
Hopefully sooner rather than later this will be resolved.
Vivid mode used to make colours look completely oversaturated on Samsung phones on sRGB content, now it's more accurate.
Did you use DCI-P3 content when measuring DCI-P3 colour coverage?
Correct, over saturation is gone now.
Over saturated is why people buy samsung. It's why amoled won over lcd
@@yule718 it's a past thing now

Very informative video. Can you do test on S23 Ultra Natural as Vivid. If Natural on S23 Ultra has better gamut coverage Samsung may not be able to fix the issue as it may be problem with the screen
May have to use SetEdit etc to manually adjust the display setting instead of on settings for the time being.
Hahaha while watching this I really went to check the vivid and natural in screen mode, it is really not changing! Waiting for the update.
