Washed Out Colors? Here's Why | Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

  • Well, not everything can be candy canes and lemon drops when it... drops.
Looks like we have some reports of "washed out" colors coming in for the S24 Ultra, so I figured I'd share my findings and what I think the main cause is. At least based on the first 36 hours of using it.
I still say it's killer phone, I'm loving it.
    Thanks for watching.

Thanks everyone for stopping by. I'll do my best to catch up on comments during my breaks at work tomorrow, I need to get some rest.
The latest update is that there will be a fix for the vivid toggle by launch day, but I haven't had a chance to confirm it yet. Apparently it's mentioned in the Samsung Members app according to a few folks, but I haven't seen it yet. I'll let you when/if I do, or please drop a comment if you know more. We're bound to see little bugs get ironed out, there's a lot that's new in One UI 6.1.
I probably wouldn't be able to tell if I didn't have them both side by side, not trying to make this sound like a big deal. Once the Vivid toggle works like it should, this will likely just blow over and will be forgotten.
UPDATE 2/4/2024: Samsung has confirmed this is indeed an issue, and a fix is on the way. It's up on SamMobile's site now, and I'm also seeing it posted elsewhere. I'm not sure when we'll get the Vivid Toggle / Gamma fix, but it is coming. I suspect we'll see it sooner than later.

It's interesting because, if you open Instagram, and then swipe directly back to home screen, the screen actually loses color saturation adds brightness (or removes contrast). The people saying it's just nitpicking don't understand that you can actually see a big difference between screen modes. Comparing it to my S23+ you can really see the difference in the color saturation on vivid mode. My theory is that it's somehow related to the ability for the 24 Ultra to display colors in HDR for Instagram, something that wasn't possible before. Being that it's software, I'm confident they can patch it with the next update.

That comment from Samsung in the members app looks like one of their canned responses. NO mention was made specifically of the Vivid mode issue in that comment. I would not trust that. That being said Samsung should put out an official statement on this otherwise I may have to return my S24 plus. I am not going to downgrade from a vivid screen.

The anti reflective coating destroys the colour accuracy, and colours don't pop unless you crank the saturation, making the colours way less accurate.

Thanks for the update and significant scientific testing. Yes, it's a bug for sure, and I think Samsung has mentioned somewhere that a fix is on the way. Probably OneUI 6.1 early issues. It's not a big deal for me as I'm not too fond of vivid mode, so for me, natural mode.
On Twitter, I also explained that the anti-glare will make the display less dramatic, and sharpness may be noticeable to those with 20/15 vision or better. No one has yet invented an anti-glare display that can compound its compromises.
My only issue is that now we have a flat display, we are unable to use a tempered glass protector that will not negate the anti-glare, so we are stuck using Samsung anti-glare plastic screen protectors. If £30 a pop isn't enough, the design of having to put an anti-glare protector on an anti-glare display is sublimely ridiculous!

    • @jeremy72
      @jeremy72 7 месяцев назад +2

And it seems none of the screen protectors fit the width of the screen, there is a small gap on all sides meaning that your fingers catch the side of the protector. I've got a glass one, but it catches and almost cuts the side of my finger. If you watch videos of the official Samsung protector it is also the wrong size. So somehow everyone has made the wrong size protector including Samsung themselves. All my protectors on the S22/S23 ultra just fit perfectly. If in the UK, Amazon are offering the official Samsung protector for 1/2 price if you pre-order (£15)

I showed side by side my old s22 ultra next to the s24 ultra to a samsung representative at best buy. She said she couldnt tell the color difference because she wears contacts. I laughed pretty hard at her lie and moved on. Im so glad other normal people can tell the difference and are making a noise about it

So what's the point of vivid and natural when vivid mode is like adding 2% saturation only?? Vivid mode is supposed to look VIVID and NOT NATURALSince Samsung says the color adjustment was intentional, don’t expect the current version of it to change. So if you’re disappointed with the lack of saturation, like we are, it looks like we’ll just have to put up with it unless Samsung changes its mind.

No no no, it's all go to do with the new feature of vividness level. So go to settings, display, then screen mode then select vivid then select advanced settings then increase the vividness all the way up. You're welcome!

I have 24+, looking at home screen vs watching videos is quite a different story on mine. Yellowish tint on videos regardless of natural or vivid setting. White balance is way off even afte setting red and green sliders all the way down which should yield a cooler, less warm effect but does not while viewing RUclips video. Also even looking at phone from slightly different angles changes the colors drastically. Just bought mine today. Returning tomorrow.

Hey, I have also returned my s24U cause of the washed out colors but now I have no options to buy.. So I'm thinking to try my luck again because many other users of the S24u say that it's amazing with them, maybe we were just unlucky, What was your version so I avoid buying it? Mine was titanium yellow 1TB ..

@@predatorgaming7083 S24+ 256gb is all I know. I have friends with recent Samsungs and noticed while not being necessarily washed out, the color representation is off. I'm a RUclipsr and I watch my videos on friends Samsung phones and the color/look does not accurately match my originals. My current Motorola matches them perfectly. So I think it's just a Samsung thing. Also screens are Amoled which I think makes a difference. I have LCD on mine and there are no weird color shifts when viewing at angles and whites are white, blacks are blacks.

Saying it won't have the same level of pop as th S23U is not true. Just play an HDR video from RUclips on the S24U and it looks just as vibrant as the S23U but with brighter highlights. I know as I've tried both side by side.
I've found having Eye Comfort Shield turned on makes the display really dim and washed out even more, so make sure you turn this off.

I don't think it's nitpicking when you are paying TOP DOLLAR for what Is supposed to be a TOP TIER device 🤔... the difference is definitely noticeable when coming from the S22 or S23 U.. not sure why anyone would be ok with less . Yes , eventually you somewhat get used to it slightly after a few days bur it's still unacceptable for a device of this caliber to be like this. If I'm paying $1400 it better be perfect or better than my previous device.
