I wanted a creative way to display a bunch of pictures that didn't require plugging in a memory card or battery powered digital frame, and I remembered the clear plastic photo cubes my grandmother had when I was a kid. This woodworkers take on that theme involves gluing pictures to a scrap block of wood and applying a clear finish. It encourages people to pick them up and look at all the faces. They will survive any drop or fall off the mantle, and will last forever. I themed each one of my cubes; one for a memorable vacation, one for pets, one for each one of the daughters, etc.
The wood was from a pallet piece that I cleaned up and cut square. I think it was soft maple. The photos were printed on my laser printer which is important to know because if you use an ink-jet printer, you'll have to seal the pics first or the water based finish will run the ink. I glued them to the blocks with Mod Podge which is a big crafters material. I also top coated them with two coats of Mod Podge followed by a spray of satin poly about a month later.

Great project and full of very useful hints and tips along the way. The only problem for me would be the accurate machining and sanding of the wooden blocks. I like the idea though and will try to find a local solution. Thanks for showing us the basic techniques

I'm sure you can find a local woodworker who could help you out. I'm a member of an online community of woodworkers called Lumberjocks.com. It's like a FaceBook for woodworkers to social network. I just checked the member list, and there's a guy in Horwich. Not sure if he's still active on that site though, his profile hasn't been updated for a while. I sent him a quick message to see if he's still in the area. lumberjocks.com/jamesf

Matt KnowsThat We had a local timber merchant who would happily machine wood up to any size for you, he's now gone, the DIY stores will do limited cuts for free or just charge a little for extra cuts - they will only go large sheets as the power saw is set up for that - for health and safety they won't cut anything less. I have a dewalt radial arm saw but sawing small blocks would be a frightmare without proper clamping!

Did I hear you say you used a Color laser printer? What model color laser printer do you have? And how is the picture quality for 8x10 large color photo prints?

I had an epson 2600N and it printed at 600DPI. The photo quality was okay, but nothing like ordering prints from a photo print service. The clear coat makes them pop a little bit, and they're not meant to be super hi-res. BTW, I made them years ago (whenever the date of the video was) and they're still just as good as the day I made them.
