      OEM oils are ok, but only ok. They are obviously all made by oil companies, purchased in bulk, and not necessarily special.
      I am interested in seeing BMW Turbo oil getting tested. It is european SHELL! Should be similar to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (it is actually Shell Euro Helix).

      Paul M Understandable theory but why would BMW spend Millions in engineering & R&D the high performance $100,000+ M Series engines only to skimp out on developing mediocre engine oil to protect it?
      Oil plays a tremendous part in performance & reliability. Why would they first go through all the trouble of developing their own oil only to skimp on quality just to turn a profit? At the risk of their reputation & costly warranty repairs.
      There's much much more profit to be had skimping elsewhere where not so much is at risk

      @@Mr.Beastforpresident Ahh. Hahaha! You got me!! Touche.
      I based my BMW information on 6 year old RUclips videos from 2013! Link below:
      ruclips.net/video/g7Tc-YkJRxk/видео.html
      It was a Russian BMW mechanic literally boiling 2013 version of BMW oil along with Castrol Edge in a round bottom flask using ceramic heaters. I thought this was a very good quick simulation of heat on the oils. Unfortunately, I have been referencing this outdated video.
      Prior to 2015, BMW actually used CASTROL as their supplier. It was German Castrol Softec TXT. Strange how it left more carbon and residue vs the Castrol Edge tested at the same time. So confused. Regardless, I have never bought Castrol except GTX for lawn mowers and topping off friends' high milage beaters.
      Guess what? BMW oil is excellent. I take my words back. In 2015 BMW switched to Shell oil for factory fill Turbo oil. THAT (Shell) is good stuff in Europe and the USA. You are correct. BMW had a requirement that would not be met by the older Castrol oil. They needed a better SN Plus type oil for their tens of thousands of upcoming turbo engine. Shell

      Paul M according to Pennzoil’s website the Ultra Platinum flashes off at 17C higher than the base Platinum (224C vs 207C.) Other than that the main difference is the amount of detergents. So the Ultra Platinum would’ve just done better than the Platinum in the first round, it would’ve won.

    Here is a great idea for you to try on a lawnmower... Running your simple motor on hydrogen only. As a lawnmower only has one piston, it would take very little gas to fill up the chamber. I’ve wondered for quite a few years how well this would work but I use the old style of turbine blade lawnmower that uses no fuel or electricity so I’m out on this one.

    Just so you know , once you put the coffee decanter on the scale if you press the tare button it will read zero . at which point everybody will be able to tell that you've put exactly 200 grams of oil in the decanter . You must remember some people are really bad at simple math . There's no question whether you've added 200 grams if the scale says 200 , not 476.583 .

      @dflowers4354 5 лет назад +1

      Schaeffer's all the way! and yes, I really do believe these are some very well thought out tests that come close to what the oils do inside the engine! As a mechanical/robotics engineer I approve of these test methods. If the oil you waste money on didn't make the finals maybe you should look into changing for a better performance product.

    • @dflowers4354
      @dflowers4354 5 лет назад

      Richard Skipper I can buy a gallon of Schaeffer's for $21 from my local representative. that's $5.25/ quart for a full synthetic motor oil with a very good reputation. Mobil 1 is a good oil don't get me wrong but if you have been around and have not been doing your homework (research and development), then you're going to get passed by better products in competition to be number one. Mobil 1 has definitely come up in the years as far as staying competitive. however, I am afraid this is due to the ingredients (detergents, base chems, and other additives) being of better quality. The tests he does here in this video really do show a good idea of how these oils work. the concept of the tests here are on a more generalized generic scale but he is not a scientist and thus doesn't have the fancy equipment. Although entertaining as it may be, the general take away of the performance in his tests is pretty clear. That under not only under environmental circumstances, but general operating circumstance that the performance of the oil will show up when put through generalized tests. It is good research and fantastically executed!

      Unfortunately, it will be beaten by Penrite, Schaefers, or Amsoil! Their base oil, additives, and cost make them superior. However, I will always recommend everyone to get Pennzoil Ultra Platinum at every chance. Especially since it is available from WM at discount.

      @@charlespetersonii6989 I use Quakerstate full synthetic, ultimate durability for around $5.66 a quart at Walmart. It actually did pretty well in these tests, considering how cheap the price is. I know that it's not considered a true Group IV or V PAO but my truck seems to like the oil.

    I appreciate all the time you have put into this study. It is enjoyable to watch and when someone else releases a video along these lines they are out of their league.
