The first time I heard awareness about colon cancer was in the Two Hot Takes podcast and it made me think a lot about my parents and how them and many people should be normalizing getting one and doing it. I also have a friend who's mom is struggling with colon cancer and it's sad and difficult. At the end of the day, it's healthy getting screened!

    I've had a colonoscopy before. Sorry yours was painful! Mine was all good. My results were good as well. The doctor saw nothing alarming, but because of my age (I was 43 at the time) and family history, my PCP suggested I get one, so I did and was glad I did! Glad that you and your sister have rekindled your relationship! Sounds like she is thrilled that she's now an aunt! I can't wait for the visit! Just to let you know really quick, as a nurse and a patient, I've woken up during actual surgery on my ankle... That's part of the reason that the anesthesiologist is right there. They will monitor you health-wise along with the doctor but they're also there in case you wake up. They were already prepping the medication to give you as soon as they notice that you are awake. Also I recommend in the future that you let them know that you are nauseous after anesthesia it's a very very common side effect of anesthesia and what they will do is give you anti-nausea medication prior to giving you the anesthesia and when you wake up you won't have that post-surgical nausea. And lastly I just wanted to say thank you for getting a colonoscopy even though you are uncomfortable. It really is worth it going through it instead of having to deal with colon cancer. You're such a positive example. Thank you for everything that you do for all of us!

    Congratulations on reconnecting with your sister- that's beautiful! A friend of mine had something similar happen- she & her sister never had much in common & sort of lost touch with each other throughout their teenage years. Her sister married young & had children in her early 20s, whereas my friend became an engineer, focused primarily on her career & waited until she was almost 40 to have her 1st child... but once that happened, she & her sister suddenly had a lot more common ground & are close to this day (my friend's sons are now 13 & 11yo). You're right- it's never too late! I'm sure it's bringing your mom a lot of peace to know that her daughters are finding common ground & can be there for one another, as adults.

My 2 younger sisters and I are the best of friends. My 2 kids (already young adults) do love each other but they don't talk much because they have completely different personalities & find each other annoying. So i, too, know that pain of watching my kids not really get along. I hope and pray they can someday be close and spend time together. I always tell them that in this world there are few ppl you can trust and rely on and a sibling should always be one of those ppl.

      Same experience here. My brother is 9 years older and always a jerk. When I was 21 I realized “I’m a fucking adult, I decide who I have a relationship with”. No confrontation - i literally ghosted him. It’s been over 20 years and, tellingly, he’s never once reached out to me.

    • @wellhello1603

      That’s how I feel too, family doesn’t mean we need to suffer from the relationship, I feel. Our whole family has weird vibe all together, but me and my sister especially, because although our relationship was sometimes good, mostly bad or non existent. She’s 5 years older than me. We don’t talk most of our lives, because we start fighting very fast and it ends in traumas. We just live our separate lives and neither seem to mind that we don’t aren’t in each other’s lives that much.
      The only hard part is hard for me- is that our mom tries to guilt trip me into doing something for my sister when she asks her to help, same with her. “Family always helps each other unconditionally”, like making me feel I need to participate in her life, do stuff for her and i always feel bad to say no, so I usually can’t. If I can’t find an excuse, I feel like have to do it. Ofc I’m always there for my sister or anyone in genuinely hard times with no one asking me to, but I always wonder if I’m being narcissistic that I try to wiggle myself out when it feels inconvenient for me.

      @stephlyndsey3932 Год назад +1

      @@JH-bx8lb Yeah after siblings get in their 20s or older I don't feel like the "age excuse" is valid anymore. Everyone is an adult and there's plenty of ways to connect if both parties are willing.

We decided to leave opinions and frustrations at the door and be friends. 4 years in she developed metastatic breast cancer and ultimately died of Sepsis, 2 years ago. So we had a total of 6 years of friendship. I am so grateful to have had the fond memories, talks and laughs. I miss her everyday!!! Good luck to you and Sister. My sister and I always had a complicated relationship too. She was always sick when were growing up and it putting a lot of strain on my family and getting my own emotional needs met as a child/adolescent. When she became a mother, we became so much closer. She died from brain cancer 4 years ago. There’s so much I wish I could change still.

    Julia, I am from Russia, my English is not very good and I don’t understand you like for 100%, but I glad to hear that you reconnected with your sister. I understand, how this important to you, because I also reconnected with my sister after 8 years of silence and pain without her. My sister’s name is Julia by the way 💞

    Weird timing, my dad is getting his first colonoscopy this week! He’s in his 60s so it is HIGHLY overdue. My sister, my mom and I have been after him for years to get one! He is grumbling about the prep work which seems different from the one you had to do. My mom’s had a few done and her prep was similar to yours. My sister (around your age and mine, early 30s) had her first last year due to gastro issues and since they found polyps, she’s due to get one every 5 years now. (My mom and uncle also had them too, apparently super common). Sorry your experience was not great, waking up in the middle of the procedure sounds terrifying.
    And glad to hear Honor has brought you and your sister closer! Is she a parent too? I was wondering if that was maybe part of the reason you’ve been able to reconnect. I remember you mentioning in a video once you had a difficult relationship with her so you have discussed it briefly in passing.

    I have had one colonoscopy and for me the prep was horrendous. I have to get another one in five years and I am dreading it. I think they are extremely important but they are awful to go through. Glad all is well and you got through it.

    As an ulcerative colitis queen, I've had four colonoscopies in the past 7 years. Hopefully you were able to do the Miralax and Gatorade prep rather than the magnesium citrate...makes a world of difference to how you feel before and after. My doctor uses very light anesthesia and likes to point out things to me on the video monitor during the procedure! 😬

    I had my first Colonoscopy last year and the prep was the challenging part but the actual procedure was fine. They knocked me out with propafol (I think I butchered that spelling lol) and they also did the procedure where they didn't have to put air up there so I didn't have gas afterwards. All I remember is the anesthesia starting to go in then fade to black then I was waking up in recovery. I had never been put under before so I was really nervous about that but everything went fine. They did fine one polup near my colon and removed it sooo now I have to go back in five years for another one. For me it was the opposite...childbirth was WAYYYYY worse than the Colonoscopy haha. But, it's one of those things that's super important to have done. Glad everything was good and healthy for you😊❤️
