Years ago, I was talking to a stranger at a dinner party and told him that I was going to write a book. Generally, that remark gets oooo's and ahhhhhh's from people. But this guy just said "And how long have you been planning to write this book?" I told him I'd been collecting information and ideas for the last 20 years, and he said "Forget it. You're obviously not going to write it." This shook me up enough to tickle my "I'll-show-you bone". I sent this man my first 4 published books. The next three I didn't bother. If he hadn't rattled my chain, I would probably still be just talking about it.😂😂

I used to be exactly the same, in fact I would spend ages making notes either about the idea or to try and think one up, and not actually do the work because I was too busy fine-tuning the ideas, or researching them. Once I started showing up at my desk every day (even if I was in a really flat mood and only felt capable of doing a quick scribble) I started to detach from that mindset gradually. I think it might be connected to perfectionism, as I just started doing a new thing of painting but allowing myself to do bad work, in fact encouraging myself to do bad work, and finally I feel like I'm getting some traction, and I can paint freely and enjoy it. Ideas are coming from the work I've done rather than from my thinking, which always resulted in disappointment as I would spend hours trying to have the perfect idea only to find when I started the project, it didn't work. So I think this video is bang on and I wish you lots of luck with trying out just showing up and doing something, it really works!

I was a bit embarrassed about the quality of the paper I had drawn on (we never had money so it was very rough paper). It’s why I stand firm in, “create something every day”. Doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, doesn’t have to be world changing, doesn’t even have to be finished. But greasing that creative groove is powerful. As a teacher, you give a lot. Try giving to yourself first. Maybe it’s 5 min sketch during your morning coffee. For me, showing up every day is about building a relationship with my inner artist, others may call this the muse or the diamon. We are in service to this source of creativity & imagination and we have to make sacrifices of our time & energy in dedication to this deity. If we commit to this relationship, hold a space to reach out, listen & trust it will lead us to who we actually are, what our art is about, to our authentic voice and style. Your ego, your mind, what you think isn’t your art, it is something deeper & showing up, being patient & developing a daily practice is the only way to have something that truly expresses your soul. And that is always more satisfying.

Thanks for the encouragement...just showing up is so important in many aspects of my life, but surprisingly hard to do sometimes. But you're right, just 5minutes can move the needle, maybe not a bunch, but keeping up the practice will payoff huge sometimes...and a bit other days.

I’m happy to have helped, Michael! The hardest part is starting (anything). Once you get going it’s so much easier to keep that inertia and continue pace. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but consistency (in anything) never is. Overtime that consistency compounds, and that’s where the magic happens. Plus, sometimes 5minutes = 3 hours! Happy creating!

Another thing I do is reach for my least used/favourite medium and then choose a random page in my sketchbook so if it’s terrible it’s tucked away in the sketchbook. Then I find my creative juices are flowing again and I can do the stuff I like with the materials I love.

I self published three books. Kicked my butt, haven't made any money, in fact lost on advertising. What I learned is that I don't have everything I need. I don't have the know how or mental capacity of marketing to put my books into people's hands. (I'm autistic, it's a literal mental block so no, I can't just learn how to market. I've tried.) • @Seamannon

Marketing is often about relatability and art is about emotional resonance too on the side of the consumer. Maybe you've put yourself in the wrong places and before people if you weren't received in a positive way?
What are your books about? Who are they really for? Who can resonate with the stories? What can they learn from it? Who can benefit from what you have to give and how? These are important questions to ask, so you can focus on your particular niche instead of relying on some marketing "specialist" to bring in customers. Many of those "specialists or "art managers" will just take your money without delivering any results they promise and then even blame you for the results and call your art crap. Neurotypicals don't relate well with neurodivergent peole and their struggles, there is usually a clash in communication when they're forced to work together. Keep that in mind.
It's better to build things up from scratch when you are personally engaged in the process, because you know your message best and you care about it most and you have to care about the people who become your first supporters too. You have to learn how to serve them best without compromising on your values, you have to discover that middle ground because no one else with care about it more and it has to be personal. You have to learn how to take feedback and how to ignore nonconstructive comments. You can call in advisors and other specialists when you are at the stage where you know your core products and when you have enough discernment to reject incompatible "help".
Best of luck to you! May you find the best path to express yourself and relate to others! ;)
PS: I believe the video was about creating art and expressing yourself, not as much about selling it - that's a different problem. Developing your skill vs monetizing it. You just admitted that you have everything you need to create your art, because you've already created it. Now you have to figure out who can receive it - that's the next level of the journey.

100% agree. Years ago when I started setting creating goals (3 peices a day) it escalated into 5 to 10 a day. I got obsessed. Was that work good? Not at all! But I've been consistent ever since and focus more on quality most days. But still to this day I sometimes have nothing to give. So I sit down and just copy something for the ritual. The ritual of creating and not focusing on perfection is as fun as those great pieces you are proud of.

I often find excuses to avoid creating art, whether it's doubting my abilities compared to others on social media or convincing myself that I need certain materials before I can start a project. However, I realize now that these are merely distractions. You're correct; everything I need to excel is already within me. It's up to me to take that first step. Additionally, I appreciate the analogy that five minutes of focused effort can yield as much as three hours of distracted work.

It's available on Amazon. But now I am planning to bring out a revised edition, with some changes made, plus some new write-ups added. Once the new book is out, it will be available on Amazon, with its previous edition withdrawn from the site. I feel our lives are nothing without creativity. I even told my friend I think around new years, “dang dude, I remember when I didn’t have a “PC” pc and I said I would edit videos if I had a stronger one, and now it’s literally about just doing it,” (bc I upgraded since) and man. So many excuses… I’ve also tried to fathom why I was able to produce more when I had less, because now that I have more I’ve produced less… I guess the hunger and will was stronger at the beginning, and I’m not as hungry for it now. BUT that will change :]
Thank you for the video 💙

I can relate to you sooo so much. This I reduced my “clutter” of things (distracting tech) and reduced myself down to my 6th gen iPad Pro and have been insanely productive with less as a result. Art, RUclips editing, email, etc. I’m a big proponent of less is more. Use what you have, even if that means getting rid of some of those things to “clear up the clutter”. Too much for me = analysis paralysis. My ADHD brain likes simple. 😂 Dive back in and make some cool things. Take it slow. Enjoy the process. Rooting for you ❤️

I art somewhat everyday. Some days though it's hard to when I work all day. Sometimes I do have a little sketchbook in my pocket when I feel the urge to draw something and I have the time to do so.
Granted I need to give myself time to finish my comics I started. Maybe just sitting down for a few minutes a day at least to get it done might help me. Thanks for the tips. I needed this.

Thank you for this. My creative self has been informed by trauma and it has affected me immensely. I started writing as a teen and wrote A LOT. Like, I finished 3 books by the time I reached adulthood. I copyrighted them, and they've been shelved since (I'm 34). My Mom convinced me to study Modern Languages "because I wanted to be a writer" and in my first year, the professors drilled home that this was a degree for language teachers, not for writers. They also ruined Literature for me with their snobbishness. In my second year, the school opened a Creative Writing degree, but I didn't make the switch because the professors were the same snobs who had just ruined Literature the year before. I know of a classmate who made the switch and then switched back because the pompousness was insufferable. At home, mid-career my Mom vocally concluded that I'd never make it as a writer. I majored as a translator, not a teacher, and I've been a translator for over 5 years. A translator is a type of writer because there's lots of research and adaptation (re-writing), it is well said that a translation is "co-written" with the author, especially in Literary Translation (my field). And yet my trauma keeps telling me "I'm not a writer" and I keep delaying "being a writer" until I "take more courses" even though I have an A.A. in English and a B.A. in Spanish. My output has decreased significantly, consisting of unfinished works only. That's the extent of my trauma. Again, thank you for this. It might be just what I needed.
TL;DR: I was a prolific writer as a teen but trauma made me doubt myself in adulthood. I'm grateful for this video and will work 5 minutes daily toward healing my self-confidence in my craft.

Thanks for sharing your story. I read every bit of it.
You’re definitely a writer. It’s a core theme of your story, just has taken on different “outfits”.
Keep showing up to the empty word doc or the pages.. and when you’re ready, share your work with the world.
My art is also my pain, but also my joy. Colors and patterns and movement that could be the release of negative energy on the canvas, but to the viewer is so bright, colorful, and beautiful. Pain can be beauty.
Trauma is hard, but finding a healthy outlet definitely helps. Rooting for you ❤️

I'm for doing the work just not every single day. Everyone experiences burn out and need breaks, and that's ok. Breaks can be key to making headway in certain pursuits. I've pushed myself in this manner, and it really did make me more miserable as I was striving to meet other people's standards and not meeting my own needs. Not every artist works the same, and again, that's ok~

I've definitely spent the last few years having fallen into the trap of focussing too much on the end product. It's fine to do that when it's something like a comic I'd like to publish or if it's a commission, the product is part of that process. But for the casual stuff like doodling in sketchbooks or just experimenting with different mediums or styles, I'm getting better at focussing more on enjoying what I'm doing rather than focussing only on what I'm creating.
I find it far more gratifying to do a terrible 5-minute doodle over doing nothing at all :)

For as long as I can remember - now in my 70’s - I have wanted to accomplish creating my poems and paintings into a tangible collection to share…i haven’t been able to believe they are worth sharing and I am beginning to believe and acknowledge the moments have come to start this journey🤗🙏

Ive been doing traditional art for years now and i love it but i know i want to venture into animation so i tried digital and I've been struggling with it so much i find it hard to believe how i can be pretty good at traditional but struggle so much with digital and being so bad at it makes me barely want to draw whatsoever. I needed this video to push myself with both traditional and digital and try and improve with both.

Happy to have helped. Check out my fresco video.. the one that is 54 mins.. but check the chapters. There’s a bit on animation… fresco makes it STUPID simple to animate… may be what you’re looking for to get started animating drawings quickly! I’ll have to expand more on that section in future vids.

Thanks. Agreed with general idea. Just about the 'everyday' thing - isn't that a road to burnout? The people who can do that everyday might just be built different from someone like me..

    • @GinnyStLawrence
      @GinnyStLawrence  Месяц назад +2

Depends on what your everyday looks like.. in this video I describe 5 minutes a day. That (to me) doesn’t lead to burnout. I brush my teeth every day, twice a day. Do I always want to? Not really. But it takes 5 minutes and I feel better afterwards.
I think some people see “make art everyday” and it triggers them deeply. That’s not the intention of this video or my message. What I hope to leave people with is: go make something… work towards your creative expression everyday for at least 5 minutes a day. Simple doodle, cleaning brushes, etc. 5 minutes. Even if you sit there and draw circles over and over and over.. it’s 5 minutes.

    • @Barrrt
      @Barrrt Месяц назад +1

@@GinnyStLawrence I can TOTALLY agree with this. The 5 minutes wasn't clear to me. Thank you for this personal response and elaboration. And I can totally get on board with 5 minutes of art expression a day ^^

making art, no matter what, is the perfect stress buster. Make yourself laugh at your crappy art. You’ll feel better and make art, your mood will improve as will your art with time. ❤ thanks for the great supportive message ❤ 🇨🇦
