Do you sometimes struggle with your relationship with food? It's hard for me tbh. Weighing out everything, not being able to eat whatever, whenever I want... being forced to think about food all the time.
YES. Absolutely. You are not alone 💜. As people with T1D, we have to think about food an unhealthy amount... and this is the reason why people with T1D are so prone to eating disorders :( I have gone through periods where I found I was developing an unhealthy relationship with food, so I took a step back from being strict about carb counting, and that really helped my mental health.

Great video Michelle! Last Monday was my birthday and I got a traditional cake from my region Valencia(Spain) from a bakery where they dont add any sugar plus they have the carbs information! Oh my god it was such a blessing! I hope you both had an amazing day on Valentines 💝
Happy belated birthday! That's so amazing that you found a bakery where they provide the carb information - that is not common, and so helpful for us! 😊💖
@@MichelleLord thank you so much! It really is! I have a sweet tooth as you too, but is so frustrating going out cause they never have the information and is hard t guess it right 😅
So the weighing of cooked pasta versus uncooked pasta is what you have to be careful here. The weight on the serving which the carbs are in per oz of dry pasta. 2 oz serving has 40 carbs (40 carbs/2 oz =20 carbs/oz) . So if you cook the entire bag of dry pasta 16 oz there's 8 x 40 = 320 carbs total in the bag. Now when you cook the pasta and it doubles in weight (measured after draining) then you have 32 oz of cooked pasta (ratio=after/before=32 oz/16 oz=2). So 1 serving is now the ratio x 2 oz or 4 oz of cooked pasta. Or 1 oz has 10 carbs (40 carbs/4 oz = 10 carbs/oz). So if you eat 6 oz of cooked pasta on your plate that is (10 carbs x 6 oz) = 60 carbs. Double checking back to the original. 60 carbs would be 3 oz (60/40*2=3) of dry pasta which doubled in mass to 6 oz of cooked pasta.
Hi Michelle, I love food vlogs and will have to try the cherry tomato feta pasta sometime! Thank you for clearing up that food is all about balance! I have come across some people who think that T1D's can never have sweets. I'm guilty of having a sweet tooth as well and sneak in a bit of chocolate once in a while haha.

Hey Michelle! What about the protein, fat and stuff? I'm here living in Europe with type 1 diabetes and also celiac disease. I'm 19 years old and it's been 2 years since I have these diseases. I wanted to know whether it affects the blood sugar level in a bad way when you don't take the protein with carbs. I always feel like I need to make myself eggs, chicken, meat, fish and so on even tho I sometimes don't want to eat any of them with my meals. Btw, I'm glad that I've found your channel! It's helping me a lot and also your videos motivate me to keep going and fight with these conditions! 😊 💕
Hey🥰! We probably know about the same as each other with respect to how protein and fat affect blood sugar. I find that having some protein in a meal helps with reducing the post-meal blood sugar spike, but I don't always try to include protein. If I don't have any protein in my meal, then I'm extra diligent with prebolusing to avoid that spike. I also find that higher fat meals will make my blood sugar spike later on, so I tend to use an "extended bolus" on my insulin pump for meals like these. I also tend to avoid really high fat & carb meals such as pizza because I find them to be quite challenging with respect to blood sugars (of course I do still eat these things once in awhile). It's all such a learning curve and I'm still learning after 18 years! You are doing a great job and it's awesome that you are looking into these details about nutrition 😊
Newly diagnosed type 1, asked my dr if I should subtract fiber from total carbs and she said no 😦. I eat super high fiber /low carb and gosh this carb counting stuff isn’t working out for me 🥴 I must try that pasta 🍝 dish!! Looks absolutely delicious. Thanks for the vlog 😀
Don't worry, it takes a long time to get used to carb counting when you are first diagnosed. I'm sure you will get the hang of it and figure out what works best for you! 💖
I usually weigh out the pasta/rice etc before cooking and then divide into equal portions rather than weighing out again when cooked. Wonder if that would be as accurate?
I loved this video Michelle!!!! So many great meal options and great to see the scale, since getting mine my carb count has been a lot more accurate. I really want to try the first meal that you did but I have a question. When carb counting pasta does the carb count on the box apply to the pasta cooked or dry?

Very true that even with the Control IQ you will still have highs and lows. I have personally found it to be more effective at helping prevent lows as it will turn off your basil pretty quickly as it calculates you’ll go low with a certain time frame. It will increase your insulin to try to help prevent a high, i just haven’t found that to be as effective for me. Of course the key is you still have to carb count and bolus correctly, you cannot rely on Control IQ to do that for you.
Thank you for the vid. My four year old baby is T1 he likes to eat pancakes, sweets, breads ,pasta ..... his doctor told us he can eat anything. But I’m worried about his health in the future. What do you say ? Pls respond thank you 🙏🏿
I'm not a medical doctor, but I think eating a balanced diet is key. As long as you give the appropriate amount of insulin! Of course you don't want to be eating sweets and pasta all the time - everything in moderation :)
My daughter was diagnosed at 4 and she is 13 now. I’m sorry your baby was diagnosed too. You can eat anything just try to make it healthy for the most part. We don’t eat tons of sugar and cereal makes my daughter spike. It’s different for everyone. Good luck mama
I understand what you mean, but I have type 1 diabetes and am completely reliant on insulin. It helps me to measure my food so that I can properly calculate my insulin dose.

Dose t slim2 x helpes you to prevent hypers??
Thank you
Hi! Not in Canada :( .... We don't have the Control IQ feature yet. Even with Control IQ, not all high blood sugars are prevented.
Yes you are right. But i think it will add more to controll may be 75 % of hypers...do u tjink
You have better control with the tslimx2. We have been on it for 2 yrs.
@@kristymarie6065 i am asking about IQ controll
Thank you for the vid. My four year old baby is T1 he likes to eat pancakes, sweets, breads ,pasta ..... his doctor told us he can eat anything. But I’m worried about his health in the future. What do you say ? Pls respond thank you 🙏🏿
I'm not a medical doctor, but I think eating a balanced diet is key. As long as you give the appropriate amount of insulin! Of course you don't want to be eating sweets and pasta all the time - everything in moderation :)
@@MichelleLord Thank you so much Michelle 🙏🏿
My daughter was diagnosed at 4 and she is 13 now. I’m sorry your baby was diagnosed too. You can eat anything just try to make it healthy for the most part. We don’t eat tons of sugar and cereal makes my daughter spike. It’s different for everyone. Good luck mama

Hey

Hi
😘💗 hi!
I finally got my first pump
That's exciting! Congrats 😊
Hi.....
😊👋
@@MichelleLord Another amazing video
Pasta looks great but it should be about the food you eat not weights and measurements
I understand what you mean, but I have type 1 diabetes and am completely reliant on insulin. It helps me to measure my food so that I can properly calculate my insulin dose.
