  • Hi friends! In today’s “week in my life” vlog I show a lot of food (because there honestly isn’t much else to show lol), chat about my struggle with mental health this winter, and try keto pad thai for the first time! I hope you are all doing well and that your March is off to a good start. It’s almost spring!

As you know, I just reached year 63 with type 1. Mental health and type 1 are rarely talked about. It takes courage to publicly even bring it up, let alone sharing its’ periodic difficulties that we type 1s all deal with or will eventually have to deal with and especially how seasonal disorder can become aggravated by the daily grind of trying to be a “normal” person. The real trouble can come in a close relationship when the daily and endless attempts to control type 1 spreads into the non diabetes parts of your life. About 3 years ago, I got to where I lost the drive to do every day simple things because those things took away from my unending attempt to have constantly good glucose readings. So, I called a chronic disease therapist and learned so much about how long term type 1 can affect the truly normal parts of your life. Just understanding this really helps.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Doug! I always love hearing from people such as yourself, who have been dealing with T1D for a long time. I’ve only been living with T1D for a fraction of the time you have, but I have already seen how it can affect so many aspects of our lives. Taking care of our mental health is so important 💙
And congratulations again for 63 years of strength living with T1D 💪🎉

I have great respect for Type 1s. I'm a Type 2 and I get down on myself and honestly I could solve this if I were more disciplined.

I was diagnosed at age 13, and am now 52. Started wearing my first pump about 16 years ago and have not looked back. I can't believe that I went 23 years giving myself 5-6 shots per day! Life is good and I do not have any diabetes complications yet. My mental health has definitely taken a hit over the years, especially with anxiety and sometimes depression, but I have found ways to cope.

Oh Michelle, I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU in that mental health struggle at present. Truly, thank you for opening up and saying that you're struggling because it makes me feel less alone. This lockdown...these realities...it's just a LOT. I completely feel you. I don't know what the answer is, but that coffee and treat day looked lovely and a break in the routine, I think I'm going to try that myself. I'm so jealous of your keto pad Thai delight! Though I'm sure the regular tasted better - always does eh! But so cool to know the option is there because I have a very similar 'interesting diabetes experience' with my Pad Thai consumption!! Really just grateful to you for sharing you honesty and experience!! Oh, and all I do is eat now too! 🤪🙃💙 Big love to you my Diabuddy!

I'm so sorry that you're struggling with mental health. It's definitely not just you. When covid first started, my group texts were blowing up all the time, we were doing girls' zoom cocktail hours, outdoor get-togethers, etc. All of that has dried up. We're all just withdrawn and isolated in our homes now. My kids started out enjoying remote learning, now they're depressed and struggling. It's really hard and unnatural. Spring and vaccines are around the corner, can't wait!

    • @MichelleLord

Thank you ❤️! The effect that this pandemic has had on mental health is unreal. I’m sorry you and your kids are feeling it as well! It’s a very unnatural situation to be in, but we are so close to better times ahead 🌸☀️!

Now I want some Pad Thai! My husband and I have added a nice long walk with our dogs in the evenings now that it's getting warmer (versus just running outside for a quick potty break) and it has been a great help for our mental health! We live in the midwestern USA and people here just don't care about the virus or virus restrictions at all it seems so we have been extra careful and really haven't left our house much either. I totally know what you mean about getting the pandemic blues/winter sadness. I'm trying to pickup things to look forward to to give me something to pick up and put down during the day like a good book and a knitting project. I'm hoping to plant a garden soon too, and hopefully that will give me delicious fresh produce to look forward to!

We're social creatures, being locked down takes its toll on you. Even as somebody who tends to do things solo, the distancing thing is noticeable even though I've been going to work throughout this with plenty of face to face interaction with people I know everyday. I can only imagine how it would affect folks like yourself that have been work from home this entire time with extremely limited in person interaction. We are all ready for some close interaction with anybody.

Hey Michelle this pandemic has been hard on my mental health as well especially after getting my T1D diagnosis shortly after this whole pandemic began. I have had some diabetes burn out this week both physically and mentally after getting steroid injections in both knees and the steroids wreaking havoc on my blood sugars. So happy that you are coming out of lockdown this week. You and Raffi will for sure have to celebrate coming out of lockdown and the nice spring weather around the corner.

Aww I love your vlogs no matter what 😊 I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with your mental health 😔 I feel like I’ve probably have been feeling down and lonely from this whole covid thing plus add on some autoimmune diseases... uugghh... 😕 not fun.. I need to find some kind of young adult life group or something because I know I have multiple lovely, beautiful, and amazing people/friends in my life but I truly don’t feel like it. Anyways... I send lots of love and air hugs as always your guys way! 🤗💕 don’t give up no matter what and one thing my mom recently heard from a customer the other day at work and then was telling us about it was, whenever you start to not feel good or whatever it is like for example.. feel like your having a panic attack, are so angry over multiple things, or just anxious try to do this. (Which we are going/need to work on) but.. try whispering or just saying out loud how you feel and I guess, it doesn’t totally go away but you seem to feel a little calmer..maybe instead of pushing all that negative stuff down inside of you and keeping it there. Just a little something from your diabuddy 🤗 Oh! And also love that little joke your husband said about keto hahaha 😂

Your comment regarding going low with Basal IQ is the same with Control IQ and going high. When sleeping the Basal IQ really shines because you aren't eating anything and your activity is minimal. Once up and about it is a different game. I have found that if I am doing very little activity (watching TV/computer) glucose will go up if you are not in a down arrow situation. Otherwise it's juice box time. I'm 71 and been on Control IQ since November, 2020 and T1D since 1970. Control IQ has made a vast improvement for me in glucose control. With your conscious eating and exercise routines it will be interesting to see how Control IQ works for you. I'm jealous of all the efforts you put in for good control.

My CDE drew my attention to something similar and since then I've noticed better number "behavior" for the first 48 hours and then the third day is awful.

I will be so interested in reading/hearing what you think about control iq if you do get it someday. My son is afraid to move to it because if you don't like it you are stuck with it. Every time he has given his pump more control, the more there is to go wrong. Or so it seems.
