  • Hi everyone! I’m here with my first vlog after having my daughter Eden! She is now over 2 months old, so I wanted to share a day in the life as a new mom living with type 1 diabetes. Much like being pregnant with diabetes, managing diabetes while taking care of a baby is a lot of work, but totally doable! In this vlog I have my first endocrinologist appointment postpartum, and give a little health update with respect to having protein in my urine and my Hashimoto’s disease. I am happy to be back vlogging and can’t wait to post more!

    Michelle, you are just INCREDIBLE!!! Multitasking, multi-loving, totally absolutely amazing WOMAN! I am SO in awe of you. Honestly I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed personally lately and seeing you and how you’re balancing so much and being so patient with yourself and beautiful Eden just really gave me comfort in this moment. I am the mom of a 17yo T1D girl in Chicago and I cannot tell you enough how happy I am to watch your videos and know that this type of control is possible with the dedication you put forth. She is 2.5 years into diagnosis so far and struggling a bit. Your videos give e so much hope! PLEASE keep them coming!

    Regarding endocrinology appointments via video, or for you phone call. I used Zoom video appointments in 2020. My endocrinologist is in a clinic at the main hospital. Four endocrinologists in the clinic. They always started exactly on time and lasted about half hour. But my routine recurring quarterly diabetes appointments where I have seen the same doctor for a decade now are not too comparable to a diabetic mother who just gave birth and talking to an endocrinologist who specializes in maternity care. In person appointments are back for 2021, no more video appointments.

    • @MichelleLord

      That's so nice that in person appointments are back for you! I wish they were here, but I can't see that happening any time soon. In person appointments are so much more efficient and helpful!

    Good to see you back with a video. My endo is usually on time. Had one issue with the educator at the clinic. It was supposed to be in person, but I got a reminder from the clinic, saying it was a phone appointment, the day before. I waited for the phone call for 1/2 hr and then sent an email asking if she was running late. She responded immediately saying it was an in person meeting. Just a minor communication issue. I would not be happy with a 2.5 hr wait.

    Always love seeing the notification that you uploaded a new video! 2 months already, time flies! I’ve waited before for certain phone appointments but never (ever) that long! I love seeing your control with Control IQ. I’m about to meet with my endocrinologist next month in the hopes of switching over from pens to pump. I originally came across your RUclips channel when I was hoping to switch over from the Freestyle Libre to Dexcom. I was so envious of you with Dexcom! Now I’m on Dexcom (yay insurance changes) and hoping to get on the pump (hopefully with Basal IQ first, followed by control IQ?). Looking forward to your next video ❤️

    Congratulations Michelle. As you said life with a newborn is very challenging, and with diabetes everything is multiplied! I had 2 babies pre dexcom, it was really tough and scary. I think I pricked my finger 20 times a day. The breast feeding thing is your decision, whatever works is what is best. Life does get easier as your daughter gets on a bit of a schedule and you can get back on one too. Enjoy your moments with your little gift, time is going to pass very quickly! Thanks for posting.

    Hi Michele, so good to see you posting again. Congratulations on the new chapter of life. I also wanted to ask you a question. I once had a Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte when I was running low and surprisingly my blood sugar shot up afterward. Is there a trick to order this drink and do you take insulin for this coffee?
    I actually do not understand these things and never know how to indulge. Like today I wanted a croissant so basically had that as my lunch. Any advice will be helpful? Is it okay to inject more than 3 times for a meal? or how else to take these things?

As far as your virtual appointment being that late, I hope your endo apologized as that is way too long. A little bit late is fine but hours late is not acceptable.

    Hi Michelle. I have been following your channel for a couple years now and have enjoyed your discussions and experiences. Today my doctor gave me a sample Dexcom G6 and I am wearing it for the first time. Luckily applying the sensor was absolutely painless. I am using the Dexcom app on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone.
    I have a question that I could not find an answer to on the Dexcom FAQ site and thought maybe you know the answer. I understand that the G6 transmitter sends a reading to my cell phone every 5 minutes, but I was wondering what happens to the readings if I don't have my cellphone with me for a period of time. When the cellphone is back in range again do all the missing readings get downloaded? Or are the readings lost forever.
    I know the Libre works differently, storing the readings until one collects the readings on their phone, in a pull mode rather than the Dexcom push mode.
    Thanks if you have any information on this, and good luck to you both with the new team member

    • @brianpozner868
      @brianpozner868 2 года назад

      Bill, the sensor can store up to 3 hrs of data. So if your phone is out of range, or just blocked, for some reason it can receive for a while, it will fill in the missed info.

    I know that filming is taking lots more effort now. Thank you for doing it. I would love to know so much more about your experiences with Control IQ. My son is the diabetic. He had a horrible experience with the 670g and is now on tandem. However, he is afraid to go with control iq since 1) they won't allow you to switch back if you don't like it and 2) he is afraid that the more control he gives the pump the more times it can mess up/take over and make mistakes. So for instances if you eat something before going to go run errands and it decides it needs to do a correction because you are trending upward. It would be nice to try though if he could go back to basal if he didn't like it.

    • @brianpozner868
      @brianpozner868 2 года назад +1

      I was a little nervous switching to Control IQ back in March when it was approved in Canada, however it had been great for me. (Everyone is different) for your second question, you can set up extra profiles, so if running around, like what Michelle did in the video, you can set exercise mode, but in addition you can run a profile that does not give as much basal, for example, which will prevent going low. It is also a good idea to alway wear during exercise, as Michelle did during her ballet, as now the pump is doing more work on your behalf so if it thinks it is giving insulin, but the pump is sitting on your table, it may mess up later.

    Do you have any general tips (now going through pregnancy yourself) as to how to keep such a tight range? My range nonpregnant is similar to what you mentioned yours was during pregnancy, but it's definitely challenging with so many factors at play. No rush to answer :-)

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  2 года назад +3

      Hey Lauren! So there were a few things I found helped me to get into a tight range for pregnancy... 1) Having a CGM was important, although I completely recognize that this is not accessible for everyone, 2) Prebolusing was important to avoid post-meal spikes 3) Being proactive to avoid highs by going for walks when I saw my blood sugar was rising, and lastly 4) Being consistent with meals by eating around the same time each day and approximately the same # of carbs. For example, if I had 50g for lunch one day, I wouldn't want to have 100g the next.
      Those are the main tips I can think of at the moment, but I actually want to make a video on this soon, so stay tuned :)

    I'm struggling so much with control the last few weeks. I definitely want kids in the future but I don't think my body is ready which makes me kinda sad tbh. As a person wanting to have children there's enough to worry about with fertility and your job and all of that but with diabetes there's a whole extra layer and it's a pretty thick layer.

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  2 года назад

      Aww yes, there definitely is an added thick layer when it comes to diabetes :(. I also really worried about my control and how I would manage diabetes + my job while pregnant, but I somehow made it work. Just give yourself some grace and time to work on your control, and I'm sure you will be ready one day in the future. My A1C was not in pregnancy range until a few months before I got pregnant, and I have a very healthy little girl now. Don't lose hope 💖

    As one diabetic mom to another eat about 15 more carbs before breastfeeding or pumping it helped keep me stable breastfeeding is like a full workout in burning calories 😀

      Love this tip! I need to remember to do this haha. I've noticed some lows after feeding/pumping.

    Did you see a maternal fetal doctor every month??

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  2 года назад

      Yes at first. Then it got more and more frequent as I got further along in the pregnancy. The last trimester I was going every other week for ultrasounds and blood tests.
