  • Hi everyone! I'm back with a very real "new mom with type 1 diabetes" vlog! For the past month, I've really been struggling to find time for myself, especially for blood sugar/diabetes management. In this vlog, I have my first failed insulin pump site as a mom, causing very high blood sugar. This was so much more difficult to deal with while taking care of a baby. I'm hoping to find some balance soon. Thanks for watching!

    Michelle oh my goodness YOU ARE INCREDIBLE!!!! It takes an immense amount of energy to Vlog, I know this well, but what I can’t imagine is the energy that it takes to Vlog with a newborn baby!!!! You are just remarkable!!!! Those toys are dreamy (both in aesthetic and practice) and the book is too wonderful for words! How lucky we are to have this incredible community create these beautiful teaching tools! Thank you for sharing the highs and lows as always and the reality of life as a new Mom with T1D. I feel like I’m learning so much from you and am just even more in awe of your strength, resilience and the astounding woman that you are. Thank you so much for taking the time to share. Please take very good care of yourself and know that we are all cheering you on!!! 🌟🎈🪄🥳

    Thanks so much for the tip! I’ve been wearing an insulin pump for about 16 years and never thought to keep in my old site. Love your channel and you are an inspiration as pregnancy is something I fear as a diabetic!!! You are a rockstar! 💜

    Hey Michelle! I’ve been following you for a few years now and I’m writing this comment with my 5 months old son in my arms because he won’t day nap
    on his own :) You’re not the only young mom who’s struggling at the
    moment ❤️ As for T1D management, I realized how much it has been put aside after I’d had my pump site unchanged for 12 days 🙈 Greetings to you and Eden! It’s always so nice to see you here on RUclips and on Instagram ❤️

    I feel this on so many levels!!! It willlll get better. A friend told me to stop worrying about enjoying it, and focus on surviving it. That honestly gave me freedom from the frustration with both the crying baby and insane blood sugars. After a year, the baby is wonderful and my diabetes control is pretty much back where I want it. NOW I can enjoy.

    I don't know how cold the environment is in your home. I was thinking that it might be helpful to prewarm the baby's sleeping area before laying her down on it. A electric heating pad sounds like a good idea since you can control the heat. Just be sure to remove it before laying the baby down. Also consider purchasing one for each room the baby sleeps in. 😊

      im type 1 diabetic and the thing that helped me sooooo much was creating another insulin profile for after ovulation. Ive always gotten really bad insulin resistance after ovulation and not a single endocrinologist told me that this happened and it was normal and just part of the cycle. they always made me feel like i was doing something wrong. when i started taking more insulin a few days after ovulation and a few days during my period, i got my A1c from 7% to 5.9%. the control i have just doing that one change was significant. i really hope that helps and you take this info to your daughters endocrinologist and you two can create a plan for her during that time

    Busy Busy Busy! I don't pump, but are you allowed to manually dose on those days you end up with the climbing bs levels due to a site failure, or does that really mess up your bs once you get a new site going?

    When my kids were really young, we would play "Guess Mommy's Blood Sugar" before I would do a test. They could ask questions, like what have I eaten, what kinds of activities have I done, what was my last blood sugar reading, etc and then they would guess what my current reading is. We would also talk about what to do if I was acting funny - asking me to test or getting me some "medicine" (candy). It made them feel better to have concrete information and it made me feel better about being home alone with them during the day while my husband was at work.

    Hey Michelle, thanks for being so raw and real. If your doctor okays it, maybe you could do a combo of insulin pump and injections? If you don’t want to quit the pump, you could still use it, but in those moments where you need to bolus but don’t have time to change your site, an injection only takes a few seconds. This helped me a ton when I didn’t have time at work to use my pump. Just a thought, obviously it’s between you and your team but wanted to share because it made a huge difference for me :) love your videos so much, but it’s ok to take a break from helping others to take care of yourself😘

    I'm so sorry! My daughter was newly diagnosed so I've been learning all I can and it would be so hard having a baby on top it! You can do it, just one day at a time. Two of my babies had phases where they were TERRIBLE nappers and like you, I spent hours just trying to get them to sleep. Just remember it won't last forever and she will be get the hang of it at some point.

    Sounds like you’re doing great! Thanks for the tip on leaving the infusion set cannula in for a couple hours after a new install. Btw, you might consider going old school and taking a small shot of insulin if your blood sugar goes up very rapidly after an infusion set replacement. I’ve found that gives me a quicker recovery than the pump can, especially if I get some mild exercise. For whatever reason the dosage from the pump is more slowly absorbed than from a syringe, in my experience. I’ve been on a pump now for ~10 years, and was diagnosed with “juvenile onset” diabetes in 1968. Keep on keeping on.

    It can be challenging taking care of you but it is so so important for Eden ❤️ I know it can sometimes seem impossible and you might not see it, but you are rocking the mom thing 😉 ps you are a champ for exclusively pumping, it is not something I could have done. We did combination breastfeeding/formula as I wasn’t producing enough and the pumping/breastfeeding was too much! Just exhausting, so I feel your pain lol my life sadly got much easier (though I cried) when I started formula only.. it was a tough decision to make but I had so much more quality time with her without the struggle

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  2 года назад

      Thank you so much for the encouragement ❤️!! Exclusively pumping is very challenging, and I'm honestly not sure how much longer I will do it for, but I am going to try for a bit longer. There is absolutely no shame at all in switching to formula, especially if it gives you more quality time with your baby 😊

    Not sure why, but I only ever get occlusions when giving myself a bolus. It happens often enough to make it irritating. No kinks or anything in the tubing so I just have to bolus again. The only problem is is that I have to look at how much was delivered compared to how much I bolused for---math is required. It would be nice if there was an icon to push that would automatically deliver the portion of the bolus that wasn't delivered the first time. By the way, I have been getting super high sugar levels when bolusing after changing my site yesterday. I am assuming it is just a part of my body that isn't doing well with the infusion site there. I will change my site earlier than normal.

    • @MichelleLord
      @MichelleLord  2 года назад

      The occlusions are extremely annoying. I've had quite a few lately for some reason. I totally agree with you - there should we some sort of feature to deliver the missing bolus after an occlusion alert. We don't have time to do the math lol!

    Diabetes is tough!!! I have a little one and since giving birth my sugars have been all over the place. Trying to remember to give your insulin before a meal is hard enough, and then getting distracted once you do can lead to a low blood sugar. The little one becomes a priority and we just have to try our best 🤷. My biggest issue is snacking, I forget to eat and then snack while I have a second which leads to a crazy high blood sugar 😬.

    • @angelafitzgerald1539
      @angelafitzgerald1539 2 года назад

      Also breasts feeding is tough! I couldn't get a latch for ages and had to pump for the first few months. Once I started using a shield he figured out how to latch and then he used it until he was 6 months old. Now he latches without the shield, but it was a journey to get here! You're doing great 😘
