attempting to upgrade my t:slim insulin pump to Control IQ | type 1 diabetes week in my life

- Hi friends! In this delayed vlog, I do my training to upgrade from Basal IQ to Control IQ for my t:slim X2 insulin pump, since it is now available in Canada (after a long wait). After completing my training, I was so disappointed to find out that I couldn't do the upgrade. I can't wait to try out this technology in a couple months once the baby is born :)

T1diabetic on a pump for 18 years, here. My A1C is 5,6. Both my kids were c sections. I’m glad they don’t push that agenda now as much. I’ve been on control I Q for a year or so. Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way. Turn off control IQ during warm up because a bad sensor read will pump insulin, and if reading inaccurate it will throw you into a low. Now I turn it off during warm up, test and calibrate. Then test and calibrate an hour later, and turn on IQ again. This has kept me out of trouble. On walks, I try to have very little insulin on board when I leave, eat 10 carbs without a bolus. If I’m high, I bolus the smallest amount my pump will allow. Tiny amount. Control IQ won’t auto dose for an hour after that. I usually walk 55 minutes. If I go for longer walk, I take a real coke in my pack for emergency. Then I test at one hour. Exercise really throws off this closed system for me! Sometimes I have to turn off control IQ or suspend pump entirely for a while. The exercise notice function doesn’t cut it for me. The best part of control IQ is sleeping. It works beautifully here. But exercise is a learning curve, and new sensors-be wary.
This vlog is not a fail by any means. It seems all to be part of a process and you have given us lots of useful information about the upgrade process. Now we just set it aside until after July for the next step of the process.
Great video, Michelle! So sorry you couldn’t update right away, but I admire your patience! Also, I was so impressed that Raffi planted that tree so well! 👏🏼
That sucks. I, like you am from Canada and have been on it for the past month and a bit. I wasn't impressed that much at first but now I am in love. Yes, in love with my Control IQ lol.
I can go back and back in time and see that I am not out of range. That is the truly amazing thing about it. And, with lows, it is better than the Basal IQ in so many ways...I won't' get into them but it is lights out better at that too.
Anyways, thanks Michelle. All the best with the baby.
That will be the best day in your life.
And, thanks for your videos. Have learned a lot from them.
Cheers
That's so great to hear! I cannot wait to try it! Thank you :)
Congratulations again on your pregnancy. 40 years ago they were suggesting that T1D's have C sections. I am so glad that is no longer the case. I'm praying that you have a very easy delivery.❤❤
Great video! I am glad that you stuck it out, must have been lots of editing!! Thanks for showing and explaining the training part for basal IQ. I empathize with you about COVID fears. We have lots of cases in my prefecture, and they vaccines are only available to 75 and over in our village. I think that your diabetes team is wise to wait until after the baby is born to start something new. It would be stressful to deal with any potential hiccups with the pump or software etc during your pregnancy. Make sure that you take some time everyday with Raphi to sit quietly together and sense the presence of your baby.
Love that you did this ♥️
Love your videos as always, Michelle! Looking forward to your thoughts on Control IQ post-pregnancy. In the meantime, sending you the very best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy! 💛💛
Love the Raffi plant content :) haha and your vlogs as usual xx
Always love your videos Michelle 💙 I just got up and running on my Tandem T:Slim X2 with Control IQ last Wednesday and am loving it!!!! Already my Time in Target with Clarity has increased to 80%.
Wow that's so awesome to hear Lindsey! :D Thanks for sharing!
Im getting the t slim this June and hopefully soon after I will up grade to the closed loop system with it! 😍 thanks for this so video! Hope your pregnancy is going well x
That's exciting! And thank you so much :)
I always enjoy your videos. Tfs
Missed your videos. We're in a third wave now in nova scotia. We've only been in lock down since end of March and will continue until mid June I can't imagine being in so long. Only good thing is my diabetes have been well managed. I want to say since following you I started a pump I got my a1c finally down to a great number. Thank you for your videos. Best luck on your pregnancy I have a 8 year old so I know how you're feeling.
Thank you!! I'm sorry you are also in lockdown in NS! Let's hope we can have a somewhat normal summer after this! That makes me so happy to hear that my videos have been helpful - thank you for sharing that ❤️. It made my day!
You look gorgeous! I hope you're feeling well and enjoying this time of nesting and getting ready for big changes. :) Regarding ControlIQ, my son uses it and I absolutely love it. Waking up in the morning and seeing that the pump has been suspending and delivering extra insulin overnight while we've been getting good sleep is just SO satisfying! The only time it annoys me is when we've just treated a low with fast acting sugar, and the quick increase in BG triggers increased insulin, which can cause another low. Sometimes I'll just put it on excercise mode for a bit to avoid that. Take care!
Thank you so much! That's great to hear that you and your son love Control IQ. Good tip about putting the pump on exercise mode when recovering from a low - I will have to remember that!
Congratulations 🎉
I been using the control iQ since November 2020
it’s the best thing ever🤩😍I love my tslimx2 it’s my first pump I been type1 since 2002 I was always onMDI before 🤖💟
Oh did you hear that the G7 will only have a 1hr warm up dang so ready for that LOL and a smaller
Sensor and a disposable transmitter
Delighted 4 u guys, yous will b fantastic parents, i tell my daughter im taking "muscle juice" when injecting thats why daddy is so strong 😁 but she knows 😁
Oh love you and your videos so much ❣
Awww thank you 💖
@@MichelleLord ❤😍💕
I will have had type 1 for 50 years next June. I have been on Minimed pumps since 1997. My 1st pump was a 507. I am going to try t:slim (Tandem ) for the 1st time in a couple of months. I am a little nervous about switching from Minimed as I have had them for soooo long. We will see how it goes!
I've had control IQ for a bit over a month and I love it, but after watching your video on the ranges they want you in while pregnant I don't think it would be good for you. Basically it starts to lower your basal rate any time it predicts that you will go below 6.2 and stops insulin all together if it thinks you will go below 3.9. While this range works great for most people, with your fasting target being 5.3 max it would constantly be lowering or stopping your basal rate, aiming for it's target of 6.3. So far these ranges can not be adjusted but I've heard that that might be an option with a future code release. With all that being said Control IQ is amazing and it usually keeps me in range (80 - 160 mg/dl) about 90% of the time. Love your videos and wishing you all the best with your pregnancy!
Awesome
Oh, just wait...my insurance company wouldn’t approve Control IQ, so I started on Basal IQ and then upgraded once I completed all of my pump on boarding activities.
Exercise mode has been a lifesaver for me!! I would crash out in MDI every time I tried to do any sort of intense exercise, and now, I occasionally need 1-2 glucose tablets, but mostly NOTHING.
You will LOVE Control IQ!!!
Wow! This is so awesome to hear, and makes me very excited to try it out! :)
I can't believe your insurance company would not approve Control IQ. Makes no sense to me as it doesn't cost us more to upgrade our Basal IQ to the Control IQ. Glad that you started with the basal and upgraded.
Your information is really important, but baby comes first! You’re life as you’ve known it, doesn’t exist anymore. Welcome to motherhood!
Thank you! Haha yes, life is really about to change :)
I have the pump too!
I still use mdi, but i will maybe convert to a pump later. I am just very comfortable with my syringe
And that's totally ok! The pump isn't for everyone :). Do whatever works best for you!
Hi Michelle, I just stated using a T-slim CIQ with the dexcom 6 about a month ago. I really enjoy your video's and have found the very informative and helpful, you have answered so many of my questions from the very being, even though I went to a 21/2 hour training session with Tandem. I have been taking insulin shots for 36 yrs, I'm 68 now. I did have one question for you about showering are there any tips? What about the cannula do you cover it when you unplug the tubing when you take a shower? I've been putting the pump in a plastic bag and leaving everything connected with a large rubber band around my arm holding the pump. There's got to be a better way. Any help would be great. Thank you Glenn from New Hampshire
I just stop the insulin and disconnect the pump but not the cannula.
Oh girl I totally feel your anxiety!!!! I just had my 4th baby 3 weeks ago but would ONLY leave my house to go to my doctors appointments. I did get my vaccine though so my stress has gone down a little. They say the antibodies pass to baby
Aww congrats on the new baby :)!! I hope you are both doing well! I'm sorry you were also feeling anxious about covid. I am now vaccinated and feel SO much better knowing that me and the baby are protected.
@@MichelleLord yes!!! That’s wonderful. I’m so excited for you guys and this new journey. Babies are truly a blessing and miracle. They will drive you crazy at times but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Hey you and Raffi are both awesome. I just question the judgment of the nurse. I know you trust her, but I LOVE control IQ. I wouldn’t want to attempt pregnancy without it myself. See what people say about pregnancy with it before deserting the idea altogether. I especially love the “exercise” setting.
Have you tried applying your next dexcom earlier and letting the sensor soak before attaching the transmitter for better accuracy
What a coincidence that you suggested this, because that is exactly what I have been doing for my last couple sensors! I haven't noticed a significant difference in accuracy yet, but I'm going to stick with it :)
@@MichelleLord I know that the sensor doesnt like fluctuating blood sugar levels whilst its warming up, in my case usually due to a meal, tried recalibrating one to many times after the sensors warm up and "computer said no". It panicked and said i want no part of this and stopped working. Woopsy
So I have a question! I am always afraid to walk alone especially of going low and then overcorrect and going high, so what do you usually do before going on such long walks? Like you eat something or reduce your basal some time in advance, or maybe both things? Sorry I am just curious, I never know what to do :S
I also have this fear! I try to have as little "insulin on board" when I'm walking, because that way I'm less likely to go low. I find this to help the most! For temp basals and eating snacks, it depends on what my initial blood sugar is. If it's on the higher side I will do nothing, if it's in range I will decrease my basal a bit before I walk, and if I'm on the lower side I will have something small (~10g of carbs). This of course doesn't always work out, so I am always prepared to treat a low :p
Just wondering what version of the update did you get offered as they did a minor upgrade to the pump so mine is now using version 7.4.
I got my t:sim X2 in November, 2020 and it had Control IQ already installed. I read your comment so I checked my version and it said it is Moonlight v 7.4. BTW I'm in the USA.
I wish Tandem was availible in Poland😔
I still haven’t updated, so maybe we’ll do it around the same time :). Does the code expire after a certain amount of time?
Yes, I think it expires within a week! Tandem customer service told me to email them once I have the baby and they will give me a new code so that I don't have to redo my training :)
With your pregnancy how much lower is your High range right now my high is 9.5
How are you feeling Michelle! How are your sugars?
A question in regards to updating to Control IQ: When I started with the t:slim it had control IQ already loaded. Guessing that Tandem does not supply this upgrade for free. Wondering what the cost is for the upgrade? I can't say anything negative about CIQ.
I see that my comment is a year after your post so you probably have already upgraded to control IQ, but if you haven't, upgrades are free with Tandem
@@anitastokar98 Good of Tandem to offer that free of charge considering the amount of coding, testing, and FDA approval costs. As I said I had Control IQ from the start. Just upgraded the pump and Tandem app to administer insulin using the app. I like having both options.
What????!!!!! I get why you aren't switching yet but I was hoping the reason you didn't have Control IQ was a decision with reasons other than pregnancy. Changing to Control IQ when they won't let you go back to Basal if you don't like Control is a big decision. Looking for info from real users or people in the know. You are going to be such a good mother. Congratulations on the baby. You are about to enter the best days of your life.
Can you recommend a good exercise RUclips channel for videos? So many are really hard.
During my pregnancy I have been loving Fabulous 50s lol! My mom does them, and they are awesome low impact workouts. Sometimes when my blood sugar is high, I will do one of her 10 min workouts and it really helps.
@@MichelleLord thank you Michelle. What an amazing exciting time for you. I had four children and I always found it exciting. I couldn’t wait to meet the newest member of the family!
I hate to think you’re so anxious about cv19 being T1 and pregnant that you fear leaving your house to go for a walk in the freshest Canadian air everrr?! Only because I live in Kent U.K., I commute for 2 hours into London, I work on the wards at an NHS trust that specialises in cv19 treatment (GSTT) so have been exposed to patients with this since it all kicked off but I’ve never tested positive for antibodies or the virus itself. Just enjoy your pregnancy and all the good stuff that’s coming and please try to put all this crap to the back of your mind because you have higher priorities to think about very soon! Xx
Aww thank you so much. I am vaccinated now, so my anxiety has definitely subsided. Wow, that sounds like a very stressful job during this time. I'm so glad that you never contracted covid!
