- Thirty days of going vegan is in the books and I have to say this one was a bit more difficult than keto for me as it took me out of my comfort zone. This Vegan 30 day challenge certainly surprised me in several ways and at the end of the day, I think it is a reasonable diet to follow as long as it's planned adequately.
If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

As an Indian I actually find it interesting that a lot of people struggle with vegan diets considering that Indian cuisine is mostly vegan plus ther are a LOT of options There is a dish for almost every vegetable!
As an Indian living in Canada with many Vegan friends, I'd say that they honestly don't have much options that are healthy other than salads and stuff. I've introduced many to Indian cuisine and many have made it a part of their diet too, but most people are honestly unaware of the options available to them.
@@binaryskeptic5988 Also Western Idea of vegan means no dairy, while we get most of the protein from milk based items apart from pulses and beans
@@thunderbird4712 Yes but replacing milk with vegan milk is easy. I personally use oat milk myself which has fortified protein. Peanut butter is a great source of protein although has a lot of fat too. I like to put it in my smoothies. Most of the paneer dishes can be replaced with tofu as well. I use a lot of hemp seeds in my cooking too as they're a good source of protein. Need to get creative for sure.
This is why I'm an American eating primarily Indian food! It's delicious and cruelty free!
Not Indian but love Indian food. Being able to cook a lot of different cuisines opens up a veg diet a lot, whether it’s pho, curries, tacos, ramen, couscous dishes and so on. Having a wide variety of spices and knowing how to use them helps so much!
Does anyone else find it adorable that a Doctor feels self concious about his own gas but probably tells his patience and viewers it normal and not to feel uncomftorable about it lol
It's the cutest... but it's so relatable
Gas on a vegan diet is so not true. Maybe it was his choices or his body was not used to it.

Thank you for the likes. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I did that growing up on my grandparents' ranch. Burned anything we couldn't recycle or otherwise get rid of. But that would be pretty hard for Dr Mike. lol
@@SmirkJerk that is so cool you did that but I do agree it would be hard for him to do that
I don’t think he can as he works in a hospital? 😅
@@Nick-zc6qu true but I would be fun to see him try to
Burning everything that isn't recyclable isn't really equivalent to zero waste. I know many farms do it so no fault to you or your family but in terms of the goals of zero waste, the environmental impact of burning is significantly worse than landfill/mulching. Simple way to think about it is if every landfill, instead of being big piles of dirt/debris is now a forever fire because all the trash is constantly being burned.
A doctor: OMG it's so embarrassing talking about feeling gassy
Also doctors: when did you poop, how did you poop, can you put a bit of poop in this jar and keep it in the fridge overnight then hand it to a stranger, then we'll have a look at your bottom, and btw what did your vomit look like?
My doctor told me to put my poop in his mailbox!!! xD

@@Rose-hh7mk I'm sorry, I'm just imagining a person seriously staring at poop, trying to measure it with a ruler.
🙃 I'd tell my doctor to shove it where poop comes from. I'm not putting POOP in my FRIDGE.
One thing about the vegan diet is it has taught me to appreciate veggies a lot more. I grew up with steamed brocolli and potatos as the usual veggies. No seasoning or anything. Now i know how to make veggies taste good, and they’re amongst my favorite things to eat. Just gotta learn to cook.
I grew up with the opposite 😭 my mother over seasons all veggies she thinks corn isn’t sweet enough so she literally adds sugar to it. still having a hard time eating healthy veggies cus they just don’t taste good. Salt pepper and garlic powder works most time but still not all the way there😅

I’m shocked to see how much ‘common sense’ first aid the average person doesn’t know
I always find it interesting how different everyone reacts to things like diet changes. When I went vegan four years ago, which was for health reason, I didn’t find the transition hard at all. Going vegan actually made me develop an interest in cooking and researching how to make alternatives to the foods I use to like. But at the end of the day, everyone needs to listen to their body and do what is best for them.
It was easy as hell.. and 30 years later I look FAR YOUNGER than all the animal eaters my age anywhere I am!!!

You’re right! It takes time for your body to adjust to a new diet. Any kind of diet!

The first hurdle of the abundance of gas is something that is totally difficult to prepare for! I was vegan for about 3 years. After the first few months, the gas subsided and even stopped smelling all that much after a year.
your on the suicide diet
I am not a doctor but I think your bloating and gas problem was because of too much fiber, this is a very common problem among beginner vegans.
Yeah that was definitely it. Usually goes away after 6 weeks, so he was so close lol
Fiber is indigestible to humans; it will never just "go away." It ferments because gut bacteria are eating away at it (humans literally CANNOT absorb fiber; the bacteria must eat it first) and they produce gas. All the vegans I've known have smelled bad lol.
Ya that's chris they meant the feeling
The average person doesn’t get anywhere near what they should in terms of their fibre intake, so if you decide to try a whole foods vegan diet, the trick is to increase your fibre intake very gradually (or apply the FODMAP principles which will reap similar results). Consistency is key with fibre. It will take a little while for your tummy to adjust - but it’s absolutely worth persevering. I used to get colds all the time, but since adopting a whole foods approach, I hardly ever get colds, and when I do, they’re over so much quicker. I credit all those immune boosting fruit and veggies, the spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic etc - and elimination of foods which tend to encourage production of mucus (dairy). If you need a home remedy to replace the Manuka honey, date syrup or maple syrup would be good and cheaper too.
100%. My body was not used to it at first but then it sorted itself out.
I think it's so amazing that he touched on the mental fatigue of thinking about food all the time. I totally understand how he felt.
*laughing in ed*
But that is only because it is new to him. Like any other diet people actually only have a dozen meal rotations that they do generally speaking and they might have a couple of seasonal adjustments. Once you are in your groove of any diet and you are running on autopilot then that all disappears.
wow
@@mariajoy4541 this is meant in general.. not just being vegan. We live in a time of fast and easy and trying make any changes to your diet, especially extreme ones can be mental fatiguing to think about. Especially if you are constantly on the go and busy. Its not always easy to meal prep for every situation.
A good point! But any vegan will tell you it becomes second nature and a complete non-issue after a couple of months :)
I’ve been vegan for nearly 2 years now. Great to hear that you tried it. My results found me actually eating MORE and felt a huge energy boost. I had some gas at first too, but it settled after about 2 months. Lol
btw the eating more thing is that most plants have less calories so you had more volume but im glad ythat youfeel great
Veganism cured my relationship with food. I fell for the “bro-science” of high protein, low carb, caloric deficit for many years and it messed my health up so bad. Most notably, as a woman, my reproductive health suffered immensely. When I went vegan, I reversed my endometriosis, had a happy and healthy pregnancy, periods don’t hurt whatsoever! AND I’m eating 2300+ calories a day without putting on a pound! I’ve been able to maintain my weight at a healthy BMI (at the lower end of a normal BMI). I’m never going back to eating animal products that’s for sure!
I assume the benefits of turning vegan vary from person to person? for me I don’t see any real benefit from not eating meat- I mean, it’s delicious and has protein, which I need since I lead a very active life
I’m just curious as to how there’s benefit, but it probably depends on the person; someone I know had opposite effects when they turned vegan and it sucked for them
@@vexarotof course it does. every one is different and we all descend from different ethnic backgrounds so food choices are different for us. personally i thrive off vegetable proteins. i keep that my main protein and eat white meat and fish on occasion. lots of people dont actually know how to go vegan and think it’s as simple as plucking out the chicken from your plates that’s probably why it sucked for your friend but if not it probably wasn’t meant for them
@@vexarotno animals are needlessly harmed.
I became vegetarian in 2nd grade after reading a book of food facts, which also included how hot dogs were made. I realized then that meat came from animals. My family didn't respect my choices AT ALL. I was excluded from family meals. They'd all sit at the table and eat while my little 7-year-old self was in the kitchen trying to cook for myself. Becoming vegetarian was a trial by fire. The entire world was against me but I stayed strong and eventually my family accepted it wasn't changing. Transitioning to veganism was harder for me because I thought it was something I could overcome through sheer willpower like becoming vegetarian. But Dr. Mike is right that planning is critical. The first two times I tried to become vegan overnight and I failed. The third time, I did transition overnight but I did it in tandem with research and planning out what I would do from there. And I've been happily vegan since 2019 :)

I don't understand why vegans are anti eggs and milk. Cows would die if they aren't milked regularly. Sure, there probably is some negativity in drinking milk from a different species, but aside from that, drinking milk does not harm cows. Honey is also a weird thing to be annoyed over.

And maybe less emphasis on the processed vegan products.
I was whole food plant based for 25 years. I had a mental breakdown a year ago and went to see the doctor. I was deficient in many nutrients, iodine being extremely low. I began incorporating eggs and grass fed/A2/organic dairy, while still maintaining a high vegetable intake. It took a few months, but my numbers finally came back into normal range. So???
Usually when vegans struggle with gas it's because they're eating too much fibre 🤷♀️ EDIT: Guys I didn't expect anyone to even respond to my comment. I should have worded things more carefully and been clearer. A dramatic increase in fibre will obviously cause problems, but theres also some people who are just having too much. Check out Wheezy Waiter's recent video on trying veganism. He talks about having to dial it back.
People aren't usually used to processing high amounts of Fibre like out body is built for... But we do get the ability back after about 2 months

Hello! This is my first time ever commenting on a RUclips video, but I had to reach out. I absolutely love that you did a video on this (although it seems I am 3 years late to this party). I have personally been a vegetarian for over 13 years and I definitely understand where you are coming from as far as both will power to do other things as well as your body adjusting with added flatulence. I can say from personal experience, both of those DO get better with time, and eventually it will be completely second nature so you are not putting in so much mental effort into your diet. I was a vegetarian for about 5 years before becoming vegan for a year and I experienced the same stomach problems making EACH transition. It was odd, but it did go away after a few weeks of getting readjusted. My diet is so much a part of me now I barely even think about it, so no extra energy is being used forcing myself to eat a certain way. Obviously you know what's best for your needs, and I am definitely not trying to convert anybody, but know IT DOES GET EASIER.
not easier to everyone, but for some it is

I've been whole food plant based for 5 years. I experienced the gas and bloating for my first month and it sucked, I honestly almost went back but i'm glad I stuck it out. I recently came across a podcast with Rich Roll and Simon Hill were they discuss the issues of drastically increasing your fiber intake very quickly. There are a lot of research findings that indicate slowly going plant based or introducing fermented foods can help a lot!

@Aniruddh Sharma Vegans do breastfeed; mother's milk is considered vegan...
Sunita Birwal 🤣🤣
@Aniruddh Sharma I'm not vegan, but mate, you should really do some basic research before calling anybody ridiculous. No vegans I ever heard of are against breastfeeding at all, where did you even get that? In fact, if anything, I heard of many vegans breastfeeding for longer than usual, until the baby weans off naturally or something, not sure what the proper terminology is. Anyway, longer than your average mom. And the reason why vegans stay away from dairy is the ethical issues, same as all other restrictions they have. Cows are mammals, so in order for a cow to produce milk she needs to get impregnated (artificially) and shortly after giving birth the calf is taken away and the milk she produces is taken. The calf is either taken to the veil industry, raised to repeat the mother's fate (if female) or just killed. Those cows also obviously live in shitty conditions, get impregnated as often as possible and have way shorter lifespans than they would naturally (because it's not profitable to let them live for long). Vegans don't think that is appropriate to treat animals like this, same as most "regular" people wouldn't like the idea of same thing happening to dogs/cats. I hope that was somewhat helpful!
Most people don't understand what vegan actually is.
It's not just vegetables, u can still eat pancakes, fries, 'meat', lasagne, chocolate, pasta whatever! Sometimes u just need other ingrediënts.
For pancakes you'll need to find a substitute for the eggs and milk, cause they're from animals.
And so on.
Been vegan for almost 10 years. I think if you don’t have a reason for it, and frankly, all three (environment, health, and ethics) you cannot stick to it. The SAD involves addiction and you can’t beat that without some serious moral conviction! :-).

Sorry young one, part of vegan is animal friendly, and those poor bees make that honey for the cold months. It stresses them out. And most people should know how important bees are to the eco system.
@@kevinisbell1867 honeybee is suffering not because of we take some honey, but because of monocrop agriculture. Pesticides and most of monocrops are not suitable for harvesting nectar! Think about it. But honey itself is pretty much vegan since it's just a plant nectar fermented by yeast and honeybee's stomach enzymes.
@@thewhite8uard I never thought of it that way with the pesticide. That probably is a bigger problem than people taking honey from them. And most honey is probably farmed and not from the wild. But in a way its still not vegan because even the farm processes are still cruelty to animals and its still an animal product. And its basically bee puke. And to tell you the truth honey to me has always had a slight taste of puke to it. I personally prefer maple syrup over honey as a sweetener.

I went lacto-vegetarian for 3 years and then became vegan. I noticed more gassy-ness for about two months when I became vegetarian but not after becoming vegan. Also, when I stopped taking dairy, my acne became so much better. That's just a side benefit though. The main advantage: reduced animal abuse and caring for our planet :)
I wonder if its because humasn cannot digest plants fully as it contain cellulose.
@@jeycalc6877I'd say it's more to do with Microbiome. The prebiotics in fibre increase good gut bacteria adept at helping to break down plants more efficiently, hence less gas. For someone eating less plant foods and suddenly going veggie, It may take a little while for the bacteria colonies to adjust.
I am late to the party but from my experience the first few weeks are the hardest because we all are so controlled by our habits. After this first couple weeks it gets easier an easier till you can't understand why not everybody is doing it. This last point is probably one reason for the fights between vegans and non-vegans.
A Tip for people who want to look into vegan food: try ist once every week and after a while maybe do it full time, as long as you feel happy about it.

In 2017, somebody challenged me to go vegan. I was brought up Ukrainian Canadian, one thing you'll see in all Ukrainian Canadian households where I live is that beef, chicken and pork are the life force, they gave their lives to feed us and we have them with every meal. But, regardless I went vegan and the most surprising thing happened during my last week on the treatment. One day, I woke up feeling light, not like I'd lost weight but my mind was bright, I was happy, chipper, and had energy stores galore. It was like I'd spent my entire life with a loaded hockey bag on my shoulders 24/7 and someone lifted it off.
Now, I didn't stay vegan, but I didn't regress far either. I went to vegetarianism where dairy is allowed, fish is allowed, and you can eat meat once a month and that's where I've been ever since. I still like beef and I love curried goat, but it's better saved for once a month.
For the bloating and gas, chai tea. Black chai tea is a good fix for any GI issues, it doesn't solve any of them but it pushes them to the background until you can deal with them.
You can try to have Indian food as it has so many delicious and healthy recipes .It is properly cooked unlike undercooked and uncooked salads which actually cause bloating.I have been vegetarian all my life and never experienced any problem. Have you tried Fryed Tofu?
Because when my family (2 parents and a sibling) were Vegan we had fryed tofu quite a bit and that stuff is Amazing especially when you get like white rice with it and some kind of sweet and spicy sauce.
But what if you don’t eat tofu or if your allergic to tofu?
Here's the situation, from my perspective. Mike was eating what seems like a lot of processed vegan food. That'll make you pretty tired even on a non vegan diet. You're obviously going to be better off, whether you're vegan or not, eating foods that aren't processed.
If you plan on going vegan, I recommend eating more raw vegetables, and foods that aren't specifically advertised as vegan. So, maybe avoid 'vegan cheese'.
It's going to take a while for your digestive system to become used to a whole new diet. Cutting out a large "food group" is definitely going to give you gas or mess up your digestion somehow, but that'll probably stop once your body gets used to the change. For me, it took at least 4 or 5 weeks.
I'd also bear in mind that a plant-based diet won't always result in weight loss, if that's your goal. There are a lot of plant-based alternatives to meat or dairy, which probably contain more calories, saturated fats, etc.
@noel hopley 100% agree! Veganism can be dangerous if you don't eat the right kinds of food, but so is any other diet.
One of his biggest problems were digestion and not getting enough calories, so eating only unprocessed vegan foods (beans, whole grains, raw(!) vegetables etc) would make it better? Those things are super hard to digest and higher im volume (means you need to eat way more to get enough calories). Seems pretty counterproductive, but maybe that's just me. I tried going vegan too and had to give up after a few months. I used cronometer and took supplements to hit all my nutrient targets, cooked from scratch, but my digestion killed me. Was in pain pretty much 24/7 except in the morning before I ate breakfast and I tried every hack I could find to make beans more digestible. 🤷🏼♀️
@@19Thunderbird94 actually, there are hundreds of unprocessed foods that we eat on a daily basis, and that aren't difficult to digest. Also, veganism isn't easy for the first month or so, because your body isn't used to the change in macronutrients. You'll eat less fibre on a non vegan diet, so suddenly switching it is, well, surprising to you digestive system.
@@ish4638 well, I stuck with it for more than 2 months and it got progressively worse. No sign of my body adjusting. In the beginning I was only bloated and in pain, when I stopped I had diarrhea multiple times a day to the point where I was afraid to leave the house and not making it to the nearest toilet in time. I have to completely avoid beans and limit certain vegetables, grains and seeds. My only plantbased protein options are a few select protein powders, pea based mock meats, quorn and nuts.
@@19Thunderbird94 veganism obviously isn't for everyone. I had to see a nutritionist, due to an eating disorder, and they really helped me understand the risks, what I should he eating, etc.

The thing with honey is that even though we don’t force bees to make it, it is their food and doesn’t belong to us. And of course, bees, like any other sentient creature, can be treated unethically. So generally, if a vegan is strict enough to avoid honey, that’s why.

Sparked Tiger it takes time for your digestive system to get used to the diet switch
@Sparked Tiger I suppose it can depends on what/how you eat. I never had complications switching over to my vegetarian diet, but also I already ate a low-meat diet so it wasn't that much of a change. A lot of factors to consider. Hypothetically, a personalized vegetarian diet can work for you, but that might be too difficult.
if you're having trouble with variety you can try indian vegetarian food that doesn't have milk or honey cause most indian vegetarian food and vegan food is pretty similar other than they way it's cooked. you get a lot of spices and flavour and it covers most of your nutrition too. if you have an indian/ south asian friend you can ask them for recipes and get help from them. in restaurants you'll probably have to tell them that you dont want milk products or you can ask the waiter for stuff that doesn't have milk and meat. also don't eat any type of paneer dish cause that's made of milk and most people don't know that
"I felt like a rabbit only eating salads." hey, doesn't sound like a bad life - people always knock salads, but we should make it cool :)
As a vegetarian, I suggest you look into vegetarianism, it's sorta like a more open version of veganism, as in it lets you have dairy (Milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, some versions might or might not allow eggs). Pescatarian is even more open. as it lets you have fish.
Thank you for being positive about the vegan diet. I have been vegan for almost 3 years now and plant based for around 5 years. So many negative comments. Suddenly everyone is a doctor, nutritionist or expert. I even saw a dietician and they said it is unhealthy. It can be healthy if you do it right and there is so much misinformation out there. I still get shite saying it is unhealthy when I mention issues like lactose intolerance and egg allergy. People want me to eat animal products because it is what we have always done. Despite it being unhealthy for me and then they get sick because they eat too much animal products. Good to see an accurate representation. 1. Eat natural none processed foods

When you suddenly increase your fiber intake, it can cause gas and bloating. This is because the bacteria in your gut are not used to breaking down that amount of fiber, which leads to increased gas production.
For people who don't consume enough fiber, this can be a common issue. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, only about 5% of Americans consume the recommended amount of fiber per day, which is about 25-38 grams for adults. This means that 1 in every 5 people may not be getting enough fiber in their diet.
To avoid or reduce the symptoms of gas and bloating, it's recommended to gradually increase your fiber intake over several days or weeks, drink plenty of water, and spread fiber intake throughout the day. It's also important to choose fiber-rich foods that are easier to digest, such as cooked vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
Some ppl consider honey vegan. Especially since if the bees weren’t ok with the beekeeper taking the honey they can leave. They choose to stay bc the apiary is the best option most of the time

Gas is usually the result of eating something you don't normally eat or eating a much larger quantity than you're accustomed to. It could be something as seemingly benign as a spice or food additive. Generally once you identify the problem food or additive, you need to back off then slowly increase it until your gut flora adjust -- assuming it's something you want to eat.
I can eat a whole pound of beans or broccoli with no problems, but I suspect that something as simple as silicon dioxide in a store-bought spice blend can give me hours of gas and bloating.
"It's a restrictive diet" I've been vegan for eleven years now and low FODMAP for eight years. It was much harder for me not being able to eat wheat, rye, spelt and barley anymore than being vegan, but I got used to it. No trouble getting my calories in, even when I went to the gym up to seven hours a week, and no deficiencies. It can be done! But I agree it does take an effort, you need to invest time in learning about food and cooking new dishes.
What made me go plant-based was a combination of lactose intolerance and having severe pain after eating meat. Crying on the floor kind of pain. My ideas about animal welfare developed afterwards, when I could let go of the idea that eating meat was normal and necessary, as I was raised to believe.

Please do a video on the Mediterranean diet! I have always wondered the same thing about honey 🍯 🤔
Because its exploiting the bees and the bees health can be sacrificed. Honey is made for the bees and should stay with the bees.. that's the vegan theory.
Honey is for bees to eat. You take it from them and they have to work harder to make more. On top of that, farmers smoke the hives to drive the bees away from the hives. What is their first reaction to being smoked? The bees will save as much honey as they can. So please don't say we are not harming the bees.
Bees dont exist for us they dont make honey for us besides honey is bee vomit...Yum?
LOL... Vegans... Can't eat honey because it's abusing animal labor, ROFL... It's a mental thing - there's professional help for that ;-)
Yeah, I thought harvesting(?) honey was ethical since I recall reading some articles that said that it's fine to take excess honey, as long as you don't get too greedy.
