    I think it’s really important to note that while MrWhoseTheBoss’s transformation is incredible, it’s under ideal circumstances, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t do it all at once that quickly

      he's also a millionaire. he likely has people behind the scenes tending to his needs. so be kind to yourself. focus on improving quality of life and sustaining that quality instead of the number on the scale (which is important, but not any more than having good health markers, low mental stress, no physical ailments, etc).

      @@plantahari Exactly he is phony for not mentioning how much money he has spent on all the equipment, and support staff not to mention the time he invested. Most of what he did is not possible for the majority of working class people especially those who have kids.
      I have lost 80 pounds of weight and really to get consistence results you need to slowly alter your diet, for instances easiest thing to do is cut out sweet drinks and I will say that the water bottle thing is accurate.

      @@southcoastinventors6583 The only thing his money really effects that you mentioned would be his free time. Equipment-wise, he literally could have just gone to a gym for the majority of what he used. Sure, if he bought all of his weights it could've been a bit expensive, but it's not like ONLY millionaires can afford a decent home gym. Support staff wise, what support staff? He didn't show anything that needed someone else, unless you count a spotter for working out, but it's not like you need to pay for that. It'd be reasonable to say he had a specialist to help him with his diet or a personal trainer or something, but not only are those services not as expensive as you seem to be implying, but they aren't required if you have a decent idea of what you're doing. Most of what he did IS doable by your average person financially speaking, I'm not trying to say it's easy to do any of these things, but you don't HAVE to spend all that much money to get good results. Pretty much the biggest issue is having the time (and motivation) to do all this, but it's not like the only people at the gym are the uber-rich elite or something. Most people do have at least 2 spare hours a day, if they decided to they could probably fit in a light workout or some cardio or something. Having a good diet isn't super time consuming either. Not trying to be super confrontational or anything, just felt like having a rant lol.

    I dropped about 83 lbs in the past year and a half. Let me tell ya, the hardest part wasn't working out. It wasn't dealing with burn out. It was the mental side. It was learning to control my cravings, especially when I'm stressed. I have been wanting to indulge on things like fried chicken, burgers, pancakes, and fried rice. Anything that I used to eat too much of when I was nearly 300lbs. I got to a point where I had a really unhealthy relationship with food. I would look at the nutrition facts and see 150 calories, and go "Aw man, I cant have this its too many". Not fun. I just dont snack often anymore, but I wont be too hard on myself if I did. It's still hard, and I still have a few lbs left to lose to reach my goal. Still, I really want some fried chicken and fried rice lol.

      The best way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat, but to reward yourself reasonably. Goal Setting is important.
      Remember SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound.

      Don’t take this as a medical advice on what you should do, but I’m just sharing from a personal experience and what I know. It can be worse for you to deny yourself something you want. I found out that the more I tell myself I can’t eat something, the more I want it. So I just eat what I’m craving in moderation and then move and eat normally. I’m not embracing every craving, but if it persists, then it means I need it. Balance is the key.

      I lost 41 pounds in 12 weeks, pretty strict diet only chicken, salad/veggies and protein shakes. Now that I’m at my goal I have one to two cheat days a week on high cardio days. Helps balance me out and gives me something to look forward to. It’s all about moderation. I have pretty nice abs and a few cheat meals here and there hasn’t made me lose them. What you do the most(healthy eating) will outweigh the moderate unhealthy foods you eat. Balance

      @@Sarah_academia Agree... you should never just cut foods out completely especially if you're craving something. Just have a small portion every now and then and eventually those cravings will lessen and lessen. They never go away...

    Best quote about this type of stuff I’ve ever seen. “If you can’t find the motivation, go for consistency. The motivation will come from it.” And also “if you can’t bring yourself to do your 30min workout, do 15. That way your consistent and still did *something* rather than nothing

      Yea meditation is similar. 5 min everyday is better than 35 min once a week. After a few months, especially increasing slowly, your anxiety and even BP can drop. Changed my life.

      I found that out the hard way. Ive always went up and down in weight, as a child I was very chubby at some times and very skinny at other times. As a junior in college, the reality is that stress will always interfere with any of my weight loss efforts, and I've unfortunately at my "set point" weight again despite a few years of trying to diet, succeeding by dropping 30-35 pounds, then relapsing because of stress. At this point I'm just proud at how I eat more salads, vegetables, and healthy foods than before, and I'm trying to deal with stress more efficiently. I'm still hopeful that I will be able to make enough small, long-term changes to make weight loss sustainable at some point this semester. And if I do, I won't tell anyone because I've found that when you tell people your plans for weight loss it's kind of like telling but not doing

    My ENT Surgeon always said: "Perfection is the enemy of brilliance". When I questioned him on this, he told me that the outcome of a surgery can be brilliant without being perfect. Striving for perfection increases risk and will always find diminishing returns. I've since applied this same mindset to most of my daily life.

      Maybe the mistrust is not 'outright' but way more experiential in nature across the board (heathcare and phrama). Not all healthcare professionals are trained or care equal. And in the era of internet and deep dives, wouldnt you second third check someones advice before it has direct and in cases irreversible affects on your body ?

    This was super relatable! I’m totally guilty of ignoring the “drink water” notifications on my phone.
    Having a drink available at all times is definitely the key. Partly because my hands like to fidget- so I keep grabbing it and sipping all day.
    If the water isn’t there, I don’t notice I haven’t had a drink until I’m extremely thirsty.

    I love how you talked more on the mental health aspect and having a healthy relationship with food.
    The thing that irritates me about these fad diets is it can cause ED or such an unhealthy relationship with food.
    There is a healthy way of exercising and eating and I wish I was more educated when I began my journey
    I’ve struggle with anorexia for 5 years now and it has completely ruined any sort of physical exercise and relationship with food.

    Lifting weights, my second biggest motivation to hit the gym just behind those 25 minutes of running/walking on the threadmill. In 6 months I went from doing 4 sessions of 15 reps with 2.5 Kilos weights, to doing those same sessions with 10 Kilos weights, on bench press, I went from only lifting the metal bar which is around 20 Kilos if my memory doesn't fail me, to lifting the bar with 5 Kilos discs on each side.

    @8:25 or so, I agree with the 'alarm fatigue' aspect for sure. But I will say that one thing that has helped me SO MUCH with remembering to get up & stretch, or drink water, has been picking up an old Galaxy Watch that gently vibrates after a certain amount of time to let me know I've been sitting for far too long, and suggest I get up to move around.
    It's actually significantly improved how much fluid I drink and how often I remember to stretch during the day. Even if I ignore the reminder (like if I was in the middle of a class or something), it allows me to keep better track of time and how sedentary I've been, which is a great first step in slowly incorporating life-changing habits into a routine.

      My watch annoys me. I once did 100 squats, but I kept my arms pretty much straight out. My watch told me I had been inactive for too long and suggested...SQUATS! Apparently, MY squats weren't good enough.

    I’m a 43 yr old mom of adult girls & changed my lifestyle about 2 years ago. Haven’t touched fast food, almost eliminated red meat, cut down on carbs (they were almost every meal), eliminated junk food, etc.
    Now I eat a ton more fresh fruit & veggies, walk everyday, & do a quick workout 3-5 times a week. I feel & look so much better!!!

      Just remember to have enough carbs, since they are still a requirement! What you need to cut down on, mainly, is saturated and trans fats. Those are big bad ones. I'm not a dietician, tho, so...

    Not even joking, that humidifier advice is spot on. I had throat splitting and infections all the time, in my sinuses as well. Got the humidifier because my skin kept on cracking (especially being in a city where it's winter 6 months of the year). Turns out it actually helped my throat when I slept and I can't even remember the last time I had those issues.

    As someone who suffered with an eating disorder from ages 21-24 and was raised by two parents who do a ton of swing dieting and have unhealthy relationships with food, I LOVE your measured approach to eating and choosing the best option and not trying to be perfect! As you've talked about before, fatphobia can be an issue amongst some practicing doctors, and I appreciate that you talk about healthy food choices and the benefits of maintaining a healthy weight while discouraging disordered eating like fad dieting!
    I also think it's REALLY hard to manage 10 new goals all at once. I think trying to manage 3-4 at a time is probably a better practice, but he did an amazing job!

    I have a partial thickness tear in my calf muscle, that's the medial head of the gastrocnemius. This tear was 4cm long and after 12 months it shrunk to 11mm... 5 years later, the tear is still there! Doppler ultrasound showed a major blood vessel runs behind the tear. So my circulation is pushing the tear open with each heartbeat.
    I can no longer drive my car.
    This year when I stopped doing everything myself, after 6 months, the tear has healed 3mm. 2 years of immobility will drive me nuts!!!
    I was an athlete before the initial injury.

      I have had to give up on my bachelor degree because I am not physically able to complete the placement unit. The rest can be done online, but the 70 hours of placement requires me to be actively on my feet. I was also a dog trainer and starting my foundation breeding pair of dogs I was hoping to breed for the purpose of psychiatric service dogs. The breed I had researched and chose was ideal for the task.
      But all that is out the window.
      I'm in my 40's, the only support I have is my best friend who has a full-time career and family of her own to take care of; and my 21 year old son who has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) so I support him more than he can help me. He does try to help as much as he can, but he has his limitations and that increases the pressure on me.
      Silver lining time: I have balanced my caloric intake so that I am not gaining weight, but I'm not losing it either and that frustrates me because I can't even walk to my bathroom without risking aggravating the tear. It sucks, but it is my life for the next two years.
      Meditation to keep my heart rate low and pain medication so I can will my other muscles out of atrophy to keep them moving.
      I played softball for 30 years. Now I can't even walk around my bed without pain.

      Just a side note. The matriarch of my (would-be) breeding program is a Maremma Sheepdog named Bear. Pure coincidence because I had Bear before I found Dr Mike's channel.
      His Bear is a boy, my Bear is a girl. My big white fluffy care Bear.

      @@downhomesunset thanks, my bachelor degree was in animal and veterinary bioscience. I have trained my own service dog and was volunteering as an instructor at my local dog club for a couple of years.
      I chose the Maremma because they are slightly smaller than the Great Pyrenees. They come with the protective instinct of a German Shepherd with the gentle nature of a Golden Retriever and the one person loyalty of a Jack Russell. With none of the health issues that come with all those breeds. They are eager to please and see their role as a partnership rather than a master-handler type. They have a very soft mouth and will alert without abandoning their "flock".
      Bear will sleep across or up against my legs if I am too restless at night and I get loving boops to wake up to take my medication when my alarm goes off.
      They have a natural caring instinct and are generally non-aggressive.
      I have purposely kept Bear's training to very basic obedience because I wanted to see her true nature and she is absolutely gorgeous. She apologises to her toys if she makes them squeak.

    I’m in a direct primary care / concierge clinic right now, so we do a lot of functional medicine. This video is FULL of excellent advice, some of the bread and butter of family medicine just ends up being healthy lifestyle recommendations like these. Great content Dr. Mike!

    I feel like another way to develop a consistent approach to weight loss is to not think too much about the actual weight loss part at all. Like I worried a lot about my weight when I started but then I started noticing the more minor changes like being able to walk for longer without getting too tired, being able to last longer biking or in treadmills made me switch my mindset. I started with barely being able to finish a 20-25 minute run on either a stationary bike or treadmill to being able to do 45 minutes with consistency(i.e. not stopping midway).
    The weight loss is the end goal but being able to notice and appreciate the smaller changes is what makes it more fulfilling and actually drives you more forward.

    I’ve been through a similar journey these past 9 months. After my blood tests from an ER visit came back pretty poor I started taking my health seriously again. I’ve gotten back into my exercise routine regularly. Cut back my caloric intake to about 1500-1700cal per day. I cut out trans fats and virtually all processed foods except for my cheat snacks and meals. My sleep has improved. Mental health has improved. My mental clarity has returned. I enjoy eating the amount I do now without needing to overeat or only eat unhealthy foods. It’s actually easy for me to avoid processed food completely now because the majority of it upsets my stomach recently. My self confidence has returned, I don’t feel sluggish of cloudy anymore. I went from 235lbs to 160lbs and I feel better than ever!

    I've been treating my weightloss journey the same way I trained my dog, tons of positive reinforcement and healthy mental rewards for goals that are met! If I accomplish a really hard workout, I get to relax and enjoy a movie I've been waiting to watch. If I backslide, I just take note of it, reevaluate my habits and approach, and get excited for my new plan. I never beat myself up, because I know this is a long haul, not a sprint. I've already lost 20 lbs in 3 months with this approach and I feel amazing!

      About 2 months ago I reduced the amount of notifications I get on my phone. Twitter was the app that was making my phone always light up. Also having your phone do that all the time weakens the battery overtime. I also cleaned up my youtube sub list I was subbed to close to 400 channels I am down to 200. The 200 are channels that I watch most often the other 200 was people that didn't uploaded in like 5 years etc. Since doing that I am way less driven to check my phone. And I actually feel better. Felt a little bit of withdrawal for the first 48 hours or so then it went away.

      @@jessicas2379 That sounds like an excellent idea! Also, there is a way to fully turn off the notifications on your phone (or at least from the apps you don't want to recieve anything). That helps reducing your screen time as well. It's bad if you have FOMO, but after some time it gets better and you get to enjoy the world around you.

    It took me so long to finally have a good relationship with food, diets and fitness. Age 12 I started taking diet pills and teas and I got hooked. It spiralled into a restrictive ED. Finally ten years later I have figured it out. I eat when My body tells me to. I weight lift at least 4 days a week. I am no longer depending on products or gimmicks to restrict my appetite or flush me out. I look healthy and feel beautiful and I’m so happy I won this long battle.

    8:53 is so true. I carry my water bottle around with me at school every day and during class, when I’m bored or my eyes wander to my bottle, or I see someone else drink, I just take a sip. Drinking 2, 3 liters has never been easier for me

    Hey Mike and Team, I have a suggestion for a video: Could you talk about ways to adapt / adopt healthy habits for people who do shift work? Hopefully, as a doctor, you have some insight for those of us that have to keep the world running safely while the sun is down. Perhaps it would even drill home the benefits of a regular schedule for those that take it for granted.
    I know, for myself, I changed the way I think about eating during work and managed a slow but consistent improvement in my body weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. However, it is incredibly challenging to maintain these habits when my schedule rotates, and when half my life is spent "opposite" a lot of the resources I'd like to use.

    I started working out again about 2 and a half months ago, but the actual catalyst that caused me to have the desire to be healthy started with simple stretching. I didn't realize I was in pain until I started moving muscles I hadn't moved in a year of desk work. Once the pain went away, I actually enjoyed walking at the park and in my neighborhood. I decided to lose weight and be regimented about it, and am forcing myself to eat a mix of 85% healthy food with something not generally healthy. There's no guilt in it and I crave sugar and fat food way less than before. Great video Dr. Mike. Love your stuff.

    I'm 175cm tall, was 101kg in November 2021. I just reduced eating products with added sugar in less than an year i lost 14kg and i'm not really physically active (which is something that i have to start doing). I cut down drinking soda to 3x250ml per month, now i even started enjoying some 0 sugar sodas (not saying they're healthy, but they're less unhealthy than regular). Something that worked for me is, be pragmatic and try slowly adding constraints and if you think that you're very strict loosen up. It's so cool that i could finally wear some older pants that were staying in the drawer (hoping to lose weight). I personally think that cutting soda or drastically reducing is doable, if you can reduce sweets it's perfect.

    In terms of sleep I agree that it isn't always clear cut. When I fixed my sleep routine after getting home to 8pm to 6am, I felt awful, I was awake early and could get stuff done but after several weeks I felt dead. Where as my completely unhealthy 4am to 10am routine leaves me feeling awake and motivated when I need to be.

      Exactly the reason I quit my job at McDonald's. I worked overnight shift. I started at 4am and ended at noon. After about 9 months I felt totally dead and depressed. Eventually I just broke down and refused to even walk through the door. I'm doing much better after some therapy and a new job.

    As someone who is looking to lose bodyfat percentage, I highly recommened seeing your General Practitioner who may suggest a deitician and a blood test if you have any unusual symptoms.
    What was surprising for me was I had a healthy blood test but my basal metabolic rate (BMR) was really low where it was around 1200 to 1500. (male, 180cm)

      The problem with that is dieticians are not generally covered by insurance so even if your trying to do the healthy stuff your health insurance fail you

      I think thats a good idea only if youve done everything right but fail to lose weight. Having a professional tell you what to eat is off putting to most people. Always best to get a range for X calories you need to eat to lose X weight since once you get it right and become accustomed you will have grown mentally and even if you didn't you can eat junk every now and then and still lose weight since you'd know how much calories your eating. Also how have a low BMR doesn't mean much since that just means you need to be slightly more active and it's good you eat that determines your fat loss. No point in being hyper aware of your body if doesn't affect your strategy. First we start with BMR then we will check our bodies metabolism and so on it won't end and all it will do is just add to the excuses

      ​@@ItsBecauseImBored There wasn't, I already take capicum, greentea extract and B6 to increase my metabolism through thermogenics which aids the process of turning fat to energy.
      BMR can differ between people with race, age, gender etc.
      In my case my blood test came back healthy and I cycle everywhere so my vascular system should be pretty good and my lung capacity is larger to so those functions need less energy to fill their function at rest.
      Cycling has been apart of my lifestyle for years, doing so 4 times a week regularly.

    Over the past 7-8 years I have done a drastic 180 from "fat people are terrible, lazy slobs" (my dad's opinion even tho he was morbidly obese 🙄) to "the goal (except in extreme circumstances where u about gonna die in a month if you don't lose weight) should be health" and even though I have never been overweight, I have always had extreme anxiety around my body and weight. The mindset of just working for HEALTH and not a specific weight or body type has been an ongoing journey but one that has not only made me happier with my body, but has made me 100% more empathetic to other people's struggles. I smoke cigarettes and use opiates still and much of the reason I started using them at 16 was to replace food with drugs. Instead of eating, I'd take Adderall. Instead of eating, I'd smoke a cigarette or drink coffee. There are always gonna be extremists but as a whole, promoting health (true health) at every size instead of shaming people is a much more productive way to solve health problems.

    I will point out that as someone with ADHD, I really needed reminders when I was younger otherwise I could genuinely forget to drink all day (my teachers used to bring me up every hour and make me drunk and mark it off lol), and honestly it would still probably be helpful for me now

    0:59 as a cardiologist the biggest problem w those yo-yo diets is the sudden increase of cholesterol in the blood causing blockage in multiple arteries it’s essentially like how people od faster after going clean for 4 months+ your body’s tolerance to the substance is gone and in the case of fats that yo-yo lifestyle affects your basic metabolism causing what we call fat residue that increases your risk of cardiovascular complications that are sadly mostly chronic

    I relate to the water thing. I know myself, I know my behaviours, so I really know that notifications would not work. But recently, due to being at home where I can top-up water, I've been able to just keep a bottle with me and keep drinking from it regularly. Probably the most hydrated I've ever been.

    I totally agree with the holding the water bottle that Dr. Mike said. Yesterday I went to a park with some friends and I was holding my water bottle, I drank all of it and didn't even think about it (I was there for 2 hours). When I got back I wasn't super thirsty. The day before that I didn't bring my water bottle to the park (I was there for the same amount of time) and when I got back I was super thirsty.

      Definitly, I was stupid enough not to bring mine at work. I had to spot my other co-workers' bottles to do the same.
      And I am sure it's better in the long term for the kidneys to drink small amount.

    Dr. Mike talking about pushing yourself too hard and being at risk for injury has me super worried because that's exactly what happened to me, the part that actually freaks me out is that I can't work right now because of my injury and if I lose muscle in smaller areas it could really impact my job when I'm able to go back

    I definitely need to go about this the lifestyle changes way. I am definitely guilty of yo-yoing and it's amazing how bad and fast the weight comes back each time. I am absolutely addicted to eating bad food for that little does of happiness.

    When I lost weight and changed my body fat / muscle mass ratio, my wife told me I stopped snoring (who knew?). Maybe part of the sleep improvement / lack of stuffed up feelings at night is not due to allergens, or insomnia. Perhaps a reduction in body fat also affects the bits and pieces that rattle when you snore, and steps and reps during the day meant I went to bed physically, as well as mentally tired?

      That can be. Being overweight and/or obese due to fat increases your risks for things such as sleep apnea. Which, for those thay don't know, is when you stop breathing at night. Which obviously means poor quality sleep.

    The hydration thing is one I relate with a lot. It's not just enough to have water on my desk. It's very common that, even though there's water constantly in view, I might not have a single sip. So after 9 hours I have the realization "Huh... I haven't had any water today. That's why I'm thirsty." I've gotten into the unhealthy habit of just binge drinking water at the end of the day, because despite it being RIGHT THERE I never drink any of it. It's only when I stop focusing on a task that my brain finally realizes I'm hungry, thirsty, or what have you.

    I trained for a year and a half and I was looking great and felt great in my body. I played football and tried to be a showoff (equivalent to ego lifting) and landed on my stretched hand and dislocated my shoulder badly. I had to take care of it for a year and its still sensitive to quick movements and heavy weights. Y all, remember that yout health is far more enjoyable than people being impressed...

    This is late but a point about the humidifier advice: I have bad dust allergies and was doing a bit of research and I came across some studies that show that dust mites thrive in moister climates and in dryer climates will actually drastically decrease in number. I don't know which has more benefits, moister room for better breathing or dryer room for less dust mites and less allergies.

    I'm currently in the phase when I'm trying to adopt a more healthy lifestyle, like regular workout and jogging (that part I really hate LOL), healthier food and etc., and I found the info very useful. I'm curious about one thing, though: how does one's mindset affect the body transformation process? Would adopting a more positive outlook contribute to better results?
    Anyway, you're doing great work, Mike, keep at it😊

      From personal experience, a positive outlook absolutely contributes to better results! It's harder to continue making yourself do something if you're feeling negative about it, and adopting a positive outlook helps minimize how much a bout of negative days will impact you in the long-run.

      It can. Though I would suggest looking into some other exercises other than just jogging. Finding some that you actually enjoy or at least don't mind, will help you stuck to it. Also, depending on your schedule, and i dont when you are jogging, but you also don't have to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to jog. If you have the time, jogging in the evening is best. (But still at least several hours before bed.) Your blood is at it's thickest in those early hours, which is why most heart attacks and strokes tend to happen in the morning. So if you are jogging really early, and that getting up a couple hours earlier is a struggle, it's actually healthier to do it later on in the evening. The afternoon is better as well but be mindful of your hydration and getting over heated and whatnot.
      And I also know the struggle. I am horrible at routines myself. It's one of my biggest struggles as a parent actually. I can manage on my own but kids need stable structure. And I can never keep to a structured workout myself. I am disorganized by nature. 😆 but doing what you can, and what you remember is a good start. Even if you have to start with smaller routine changes. Eventually the become habit and your brain expects them, then you can start adding more routines into your daily/weekly life.

      If you don’t really like jogging, I’ve found that swimming is quite nice for burning calories as well as exercising your muscles.
