I honestly can't believe there are people who think Mike is fatfobic. I rarely see people aproach this subject with so much sympathy and understanding.
They know he’s not. It’s called deflection. If I protect my unhealthy behavior by attacking the person pointing it out I’m deflecting. As an recovering alcoholic I know this behavior well.
@@PROVOCATEURSK phobia is an irrational fear OR AVERSION. It's because of that last part that "phobia" is often used as a suffix to mean hate or fear of someone or something like in homophobia, fatphobia, xenophobia and so on.
They donot actually believe he's fat phobic, what these types of parasites do is they're use any title possible to construct a negative narrative around the person in order to silence them so that they can once again control the narrative. That's why no one takes these parasites seriously
as a therapist, i’d like to thank you for not shaming her. plus also talking about how a mental health specialist would’ve been useful in her case. you’re doing good work!!
That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm actually going back to finish my psychology degree, and I could tell she must have gone through immense trauma and used overeating as a coping mechanism since it gives immediate but fleeting reward, and, like Dr. Mike said, not everyone can afford important medical procedures. As I'm sure you're unfortunately aware in your practice, same goes for psychological treatment. I'd like to think that if she had gotten proper therapy after such a horrible experience, she might have felt less of a need to resort to self-medication that was cheap and easily-accessible, but ultimately terrible health-wise. But, unfortunately, the bad food was all that was likely realistically available to her. So many people say mental health is a problem in the United States, but I see precious little being done about it.
@@Cisco_24 You realize you're judging a hostage situation survivor, yes? Somehow, I doubt saying, "OMG, stop eating so much junk food, fatass!" would have prevented it. People deal with trauma in various ways. The only "in the first place" treatment should have been counseling and/or therapy. She didn't get it, either because it was too expensive, didn't know about it, wasn't readily available, who knows? But dismissing the problem by saying if only someone shamed her is lazy, myopic, and just plain ignorant.
A year ago I joined the gym and I've been losing weight. When my doctor saw that I lost more than 5 kilos (I'm a little overweight) she was very happy and put the progress in her notes. Weight loss is as much mental as it is physical and having a kind doctor who gives good advice is super helpful
I've lost a decent amount of weight before, and it's amazing how much even 20lbs heavier puts strain on your body. I think I lost about that maybe 30, and I could get off the floor so much easier. I was shocked.
@ThatsJustMello4Ya Yeah sure! Basically, we cut off part of the stomach basically connecting the esophagus to a small part of the stomach (it kind of turns into a pouch) that connects straight to the small intestine which we also cut to connect the stomach to. Then the other part of the stomach or the lower portion still secretes digestive enzymes to the small intestine. Since this makes the food bypass the lower portion of the stomach, fewer calories are absorbed and therefore weight loss occurs. There are also different types like gastric banding which doesn't involve cutting the stomach but rather banding the top of the stomach but keeping a small hole so food slowly get secreted out of it allowing you to feel fuller for longer. This is less invasive and reversible. However, gastric bypass was most likely done in this case (cutting the stomach). Seeing the process most likely shows you why its only done in extreme cases-its extremely invasive and requires a lot of changes in diet.
I’m tearing up watching Dr. Mike’s response to this. I’ve gained weight due to trauma. I wish every doctor was as empathetic and trauma informed as him.
Please talk to a mental health professional and see if any trusted family or friends can help keep you motivated. But I believe in you .... You can do it!!
i have always wondered, how can you ever get to that point to grow so much that you cant move, i mean wouldnt somebody think that there is a problem that needs action already when you reach the 150kg mark? i'm not judging, im just curious because i feel like the point where you need treatment and help is far earlier than that point. marla could look for help 200kg ago for example, why did she wait til that point? for example even her daughter looks very unhealthy but she doesnt look like she is looking to improve, is she waiting to end up same as her mother or what? i mean i understand that gaining weight patologies are a thing, but why people keeps going way far beyond the limit before asking any help? for example you could see marla early in the video despite having the health issues, she was eating 5 or 6 cheese burgers and plenty of desserts, she cant obviously get those herself it was the daughter that was giving her, i cant believe that they realized it was a problem only once they reached the 350kg mark, maybe people cant control themselves but thats not an excuse for people around you imo, your family/friends MUST do something. if i had my mother come to that point for example i would just tell her "if you want a cheese burger you'd better get up and get it yourself, from me you are going to have only healthy food until you wont be better"
i love how brave marla was and now after losing 500+ pounds, she’s telling people to seek help for their issues and overcome problems with others. i’m so happy marla finally could move around and do things she couldn’t do before, and so happy that her life has changed for the better

I’m glad that you brought the psychological aspect aswell. Often we judge people very quickly, even tho we don’t what the person has experienced before the weight started to fold.

This made me emotional. It’s like that hostage experience is still holding her hostage. I’m so glad she got the surgery, and maybe therapy would help her realize that the last experience doesn’t deserve her entire future.
I don't like it when these individuals are able to afford in eating themselves into obesity but wanting society to coddle them for their dysfunctions all while demanding free help to correct the mistakes that they have done. Society is being sympathetic towards the pathetic which we should be apathetic.
@@xXscreamingkoalaXx no, if you looked at the video, you can’t judge someone like that. she went though situations which caused binge eating and binge eating and not getting the help she needed was causing more and more issues. a lot of this was triggered and a lot of her mental health deteriorated, it’s rude to just say someone’s lazy because their obese or overweight, you clearly are fat shaming
I’m completely floored by the level of compassion and understanding that Dr. Mike shows in these situations. My sister broke her leg recently (she’s about 400 lbs) and she kept going to this doctor after the break had healed, but she was still having trouble walking. He just told her it was because she was so overweight and told her to go on a diet. She finally went to a different doctor who ordered an MRI, and found out she has a broken hip and several torn tendons and ligaments. The accident she had was much more traumatic than the initial X-rays revealed and her pain was dismissed because of her weight.
Yes! I was thinking the same thing. I'm overweight and struggle with fears of being judged by doctors or having my health problems dismissed because of them. But Dr. Mike had such compassion and empathy that it just really spoke to me and made me feel so understood and cared for. Anyone that gets to be a patient of his is lucky.
Medical gaslighting. Women are often seen as attention-seeking when they have pain. Add a second bias factor like race or obesity and your chances of getting a doctor to listen to you, believe what you say and treat you appropriately are about nil. A woman's pain is either all in her head or due to weight.
I was 271 pounds at one point and going through classes for Bariatric Surgery. During those classes they asked we try and lose at least 10% of weight. I ended up weighing in at 215 at the end of those classes. Now as of today, I weigh 195 and I am still losing weight. I chose not to get the surgery, although it was the motivation I needed to start my weight loss journey. I have now started running as a hobby. Slow start to that hobby, started walking 1 minute, running 1.5 minutes (in increments). I am now up to running 4.5 minutes, walking 2 minutes. My goal is to run a 5K by the end of this year, 2022 😊
Yea...sadly an ambulance ride can bankrupt a majority of americans. Even mlreso if surgery like this is required. Normally with shows like this they give them a deal that theyll cover the fancy surgery if they go on tv
In America, they're draining you r bank account before you even get to the hospital. A single ambulance ride is enough to bankrupt some people. Someone can be writhing in pain on the street and at the same time be begging a bystander not to call them an ambulance. This country is fucked up and disgusting.
I rode an ambulance after a car collision once, and the ride cost 600 dollars. I wasn't even in pain, the car that hit me only dented my rear license plate.
@@StuffAndMoreytYes. stuff costs money. If your healthcare is free, who is picking up those bills? How are the doctors getting paid? The nurses, the assistants, all the hospital personnel who keeps those places running. Who is paying for the medicine? Who is paying the ambulance drivers? I had a friend who was morbidly obese. She got that way after an abusive relationship decades previous. She was so traumatized by her situation, when she finally was out and safe, she overate. She didn't want to be attractive to a man fearing she would fall for the same type of man.
As a Psychiatrist, I am really surprised that a Physiatrist and Psychiatrist were not called in on her outpatient rehab. We usually have to come in with a mixture of mental health counseling along with treatments for mental health challenges like dysthymia that influence eating habits. Plus, when we use confrontational therapy, there is a “flow chart” in the care process. We also have a really high POSITIVE therapeutic relationship. This was done all wrong and that is why she is thriving under a different physician.
I feel like there needs to be more emphasis on the psychiatric side of these shows. At least then people will understand that it’s more than just “being lazy”. In my opinion these shows increase fat shaming because they do not go into enough detail about what lead to this. No one wakes up one day and says “ I think I’m going to eat until I become 800lbs” just like no one wakes up and chooses to become a drug addict. Something, somewhere in their life lead them down this path and with the disgusting lack of resources, particularly in low income, rural areas, people do not have the access to information and services that could quite literally save their lives.
@@PBMS123 Ahh, that is good to know! I was gobsmacked as to why Dr. Now was handling her “motivational rehab”, because we have specialists that handle the transition from post-op to daily life. PT & OT would work wonders, with the team of doctors that I had mentioned.

There are many things that can be done for a patient, it just requires time and effort to dive in and get to the root of the issue!
Thank you for never shaming people who clearly just have an issue they need to deal with. The reason why most addictions, like food, drugs, or smoking, get more powerful over people over time is the fact that shaming people for it makes them feel like worse of a person and causes them to surrender to their addiction even more because the world has convinced them that they'll never change, despite the fact they have the power to.
while i agree most the time shaming is not a gd thing i feel we have gone too far in a lot of ways to just accept people being overweight is healthy when its not. its the same as how being underweight is not healthy if ur that overweight or ur anorexic u are sick and u need help but we have gone to a point now where if someone says maybe u have these health issues because of ur weight people jump to saying ur fat shaming when its not

As someone with a history of ED’s, I think this subject was approached extremely thoughtfully and in an informative, non-judgemental way. Massive respect!
@@teo2157 why? I feel like judgment will only scare people and make them less likely to listen to you. Course, it does depend on the person, some people will only listen to a harsh push in the right direction, but opening with judgment doesn't seem like a great method for change. If you come from a place of understanding, an audience is more likely to take what you say into consideration because they can not mask it under the idea of you being judgmental and harsh, or not fully understanding the subject. From what I've seen of the video, he is using the most effective methods of argumentative speech. An audience will not respond to you if you judge them off the bat, an audience will respond when they feel heard.

If you were to put in the amount if work she did to be able to lose *two hundred and sixty six* pounds, you’d be shredded with muscle and in the best shape of your life but I’d be willing to bet you’ve never had to lose any weight yourself so you have no clue what it takes to lose that much as she has lost and continues to lose. Probably due to a higher metabolism, the same reason I’ve personally never had to lose any weight despite eating whatever I want whenever I want and never having to maintain any type of diet, so if you haven’t had to put in the amount of work required to lose that much weight, don’t sit there and judge someone who has especially when it’s someone who recognizes they have a weight problem and are doing everything they can to lose it. As you said, she could barely get up, so how much harder do you think it would be to lose 266lbs when you can’t even stand? Not to mention it’s people like you with your ‘holier than thou’ fat shaming mentality that are part of the issue to begin with
I was working really hard for so many months to go from obese to the overweight category, only lost the weight of a turkey (around 13 pounds) I felt like that was nothing. Then my husband handed me a 13 pound turkey at the grocery store to really put that weight into perspective and wow that did the trick. Meant way more than numbers on a scale or a look in the mirror. I adore that man.
You just need to lower insulin levels for fat loss, which you do by keeping your blood glucose low (but within a healthy range, too low is bad). The reason exercise helps is because it lowers blood glucose which lowers insulin levels. Diet is also important in the sense that sugar and carbs get digested and spike your blood glucose levels. So, less sugar, and consuming less carbs is important. Foods with fiber help, because fiber slows digestion, and hence slows digestion of carbs and sugar, thus reducing the rate at which your blood glucose increases.
Great job! Keep going, don't give up. Rome wasnt build in a day. From "turkey to turkey" you're going to reach your goal. And your husband had a great idea to show you how much you've had achieved. Its so important to have a good support chain by our side in this situation, and he seems to be great. I wish you the best on your journey. ❤
I loved this ❤, as human understanding another human condition, having empathy but still being realistic , seeing her at the end I literally teared up ❤ she looks so confident and content
The fact that Dr Mike is called “Fatphobic” is a joke. You can tell how extremely passionate he is about the quality of life and the health. I feel like if I were to go to him for a cold I would come out with 10 other Illnesses, that I didn’t even know I had, absolutely cured 300/10 dr Mike
But in the opinion of the fat acceptance cult, anyone who says anything critical about their unhealthy habits and addictions is fatphobic. They want enablers. Anyone who truly cares about their health WILL be called fatphobic. That's why it's so dangerous when they take over the public health conversation with manipulative words like fatphobia.
I’ve never been obese, but I suffered a lot of bullying in my youth for being heavy. Dr. Mike’s compassion for people suffering from weight challenges (no matter the cause) makes me want to cry in gratitude. Is he accepting new patients? Because I need somebody to treat my whole person. 💜
@@smashmusique I appreciate the response, but I already have both a mental health professional and a GP in my life. Unfortunately, many GPs don’t have such a compassionate, inclusive, whole-person approach to health. Also, whether you intended it or not, please be aware that telling random strangers on the internet they need a shrink can sometimes be more damaging than helpful. Kinda like saying, “Hey dum-dum, have you ever considered you might be crazy? Maybe look into that.”
My grandmother is obese (300+lbs) and so is my mom (250+). So I watch what I eat and stay under 140lbs. I never want to suffer like they do. :( People think fat is only in the outside. Its around your organs too and the health issues are terrifying.
Also, I remember back in the early 2000s there was a show on mtv called fat camp, and it was for kids and I remember that ALL the kids, no exception, all of them had severe traumas in their life that led to them seeking food as a way to deal with it.
I love how you make it so understandable that it’s not always their fault and that could be an underlying issue that others don’t know about it. It Helped me understand that people may not always have the resources they need to get help.
I think too often people look at people like this and think “they got themselves into this”, but it doesn’t really matter HOW they got there…it matters HOW can we get them out of it.
But they do get themselves into these situations? Especially with food addictions, it takes no more energy to drive down to a McDonalds and order 10 Big Macs than it does to go to grab a light salad from the fridge. Dr. Now is able to cut the bullshit the patients like the one here give him, especially later into their treatment when the patient so often starts to play the blaming game. The patients need to realize its only them that can help themselves in the end, Dr. Now can only do so much.
@@masterball999gaming4 same as when a person ‘get themselves into hospitals’ by playing rough sports for a long time. I appreciate Dr. Mike calling out Dr. Now for how he speaks to her and escalating the situation based on assumptions. The man may be a good surgeon but kindness and understanding toward the patient matters a lot in this field.
I 100‰ agree with you on the Bariatric surgery. It's life-saving when other weight-loss options have failed. It's definitely not the easy way out, but it's an incredible option to change her life.
I was about 130lbs overweight in 2004. I was 24, otherwise healthy (which was more due to my youth than anything). I was starting to exhibit more negative health effects as time went on. My mom, an RN started to suggest seeing a bariatric surgeon. I was TOTALLY against it. My perception of weight loss surgery were the seriously and sometimes fatally problematic “stomach stapling.” Back then the Lap Band was new, but getting more popular. I ended up getting the Lap Band on June 24,2004, a little less than a month after my 24th bday. I had complications a year later that required surgery, but I’ve lost about 125lbs, and other than a 10-20lb occasional fluctuation, I’ve keep the weight off. Best decision I’ve ever made
I'm not overweight, but hearing this doctor explain the importance of being empathetic and understanding with patients got me all choked up. I spend most of my life with an undiagnosed chronic illness working with doctors like the surgeon from the show. It was so traumatic for me. We need more doctors like you in this world, who will be on your patients team👏
Seeing her get healthy was very great, but seeing her smile at the end and walking in the park... that is what moved me. She found the will to live. That can be so very hard to do. She is a warrior.
@in desperate need of a scotch Bro nobody's making excuses for not being healthy. Yes they shouldn't have enabled her unhealthy eating habits. But that's no longer a solution, and I'm amazed that you think you're qualified to give medical advice to solve her issue. Glad you're able to stay healthy, but I would expect a more empathetic response from someone who has undergone the same journey.
It is very frustrating how accusations of “fatphobia” are thrown around so recklessly. You cannot even have the conversation about the detrimental health effects of obesity without being labeled a fatphobic.
As a fat person I agree, when I see people try to have an honest and frank discussion about obesity, there is always someone nearby to shout down the conversation.
as someone with a weight that is definitely unhealthy (I recently accidentally lost about 30 pounds, which puts me in an unhealthy weight range), I notice that I get treated very differently than other people with unhealthy weights (people who are over-weight)... everyone always gives the excuse of "it's for their own good, they're unhealthy!" to justify their behavior towards fat people, but for some reason nobody at all has gotten on my case, or harassed or insulted me, or even asked "how could you let this happen??" And I haven't faced any bias or mistreatment, or even confrontation from medical providers. So personally, I think fatphobia is very real and very prominent, both conscious and internalized, and something that should be talked about more. Dr. Mike just isn't fatphobic though, if that's what you're talking about. He's against fatphobia, like he said in the video.
I truly admire your compassion and empathy towards people, not judging them. You state facts of what can and will happen from this condition, but at no time do you turn to hurtful comments towards the person♥
These shows are really difficult to watch as a person who empathises with the patient. You providing your commentary has made it bearable. You’ve filled my heart with so much love, thank you Dr Mike
One thing that made me change the view on the show is that it is all realistically to expensive for the patients. And the show basically allows for these patients to get the service without relying on donations that probably wouldnt come or not be enough
This has given me a massive amount of motivation. I weigh almost 400 lbs and I feel like losing weight is almost impossible. Seeing her transformation has given me that push that I really needed. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Cheers to Marla for advocating for herself and finding a care facility willing to LISTEN to her, HEAR her and work WITH her! So happy for her! Thank you Doctor Mike for your honesty when reviewing these videos. When going to see a doctor for the first time, we as patients are putting our trust (and in some cases our life) into the hands of a complete stranger and hoping to be given appropriate care which is freakin’ scary! A good doctor is one who is willing to take there time with me, listen to me and who does not just dismiss my feelings/concerns. There have been times where I have felt uncertain about the direction a doctor was going in treating me, but went along with it deferring to their knowledge, “expertise” and unfortunately feel had I been more assertive in airing my concerns I would have had a better outcome. Don’t get me wrong, I have also had some amazing doctors (my breast cancer team of doctors) who got me through a very hard, emotional time in my life and to whom I am forever grateful! Dr Mike handles this with the best care I’ve seen in a doctor. I’m overweight now due to depression, and trying to get back to a healthy weight, and his understanding and kindness and giving me faith that I can do it.
I clicked on this with a little apprehension, being clinically obese due to trauma and related depression and anxiety. But by the end I felt hope. Thank you.
I suffered similar problems not too long ago, one of the best ways of getting over it, is exercise, and constantly reminding yourself that the depression and anxiety is in your head.

You’re so right. I gained 100lbs within 4-5 years and didn’t realize it or was self aware the things I was eating and zero exercise was doing to my body. I have started my journey the beginning of this year and so far I have lost 30lbs. It’s hard but it can be done.

I love that Marla advocated for herself and got herself a caring and compassionate medial team to help get her to the finish line! Also love how kind and empathetic Dr. Mike was, especially when Dr. Now wasn't.
@@alleycaaatYou must be confused, cos Dr. Now's function isn't counseling but medicine. So I rather have a realistic surgeon/doc and that doctor decides that I need counseling there I have it.
Just the fact that he shows how much he really knows about all of these issues people go through and different ways to treat things makes me feel so much comfortable and trustworthy of watching him, a lot of RUclipsrs act like they know how to treat certain things when in reality they don't. As a 13 year old I've learned a lot by watching some of your videos, not only are they entertaining but they help me learn a lot which will help me in the future.
You should look into the vlog Brothers I started watching them around your age and the community has done cool things, they genuinely helped me be a kinder person
This video made me so happy, Marla's story is really inspirational and I thank you for sharing it with us. Also, your empathy and insights into what Marla was thinking and how the doctors could help Marla get better were excellent. It's easy to read/watch a few things online and think that all overweight people are lazy, unmotivated, or in denial, but they aren't! A lot of them want to get better but they can't/struggle because of past life experiences or medical conditions.
I love how you called that doctor out for his extreme lack of bedside manner. Bedside manner is very important as a doctor, and that’s something you understand. From what you present here on RUclips I’d imagine it’s one of your greatest strengths.
The Doctor seemed to be a Surgeon, who was just assigned to her when she came in... he is probably responsible for Many people already, plus all the "Emergencies"... she is almost at the point where you need a Full Time person.
How much of that though was carefully edited to make better TV though? There must have been hours upon hours of interactions between them that will never be seen that led to that moment. I am not gonna condemn either of them because we do not have the full story.
@@suzannedavila1446 Lazy?? Recovering from surgery with almost 600 excess pounds strapped to her? You saw the excruciating pain and you literally saw her heart stop. And still wrote such a disgusting comment. Shame on you.
My mother is 5'2" and weighed nearly 300 lbs before her gastric bypass. While it wasn't as extreme as this she was suffering greatly. But she adhered to her diet and exercises now she only weighs 165! And has a goal of about 155, I'm so proud of her. She has struggled with her weight for about 20 years. I'm happy to see her healthy again.
I feel like that’s what body positive should be- get as in charge of your health as you can, give your body care and compassion, and use your body to achieve new goals. Looking healthy is not much of a goal- taking charge of your health and doing what you can do make it better is much more worthwhile.
I'm 5'2 1/2" and use to be almost 400 lbs. I had the sleeve instead of the bypass and I agree, it saved my life. Mostly because my thyroid is more regulated now. I'm right around 120 lbs. ETA: tell your mom I'm proud of her!!
Yay!! Good on her! That's awesome! Ppl don't realize that shorter ppl look n feel a lot heavier at lesser weights. I'm only 5ft n was sitting right around 197-205ish. I was an ER nurse at the time n on my feet hrs n hrs a day. It killed me!! I felt like I was about 450lbs n prob looked closer to 250lbs than 200. I recently lost a good amount n im about 127 with a goal of 120! Congrats to everyone else on WLJ as well😊
I mother in law was 5’1” and roughly 300 pounds, supposed to be wheel chair bound because of a very rare bone disease. She was finally approved had a gastric bi-pass and was down to 110. After losing the weight and having the ability to be more mobile they discovered both of her hips were fractured and had to have a full replacement for each. She is no longer with us but I know that surgery dramatically improved the quality and most likely the length of her life even with as short as it was.
I can’t believe that people are saying that Mike is fatphobic. All I see right now it’s respect and he’s giving a thorough explanation of everything that’s going on. He’s not judging anything about this person‘s quality of life. Good job Mike!!!
"redditors" lol that explains it, those terminally online virgins cant get up in the morning without watching a teens reacting to life sentences compilation, of course they would call criticism of their laziness an act of discrimination. hell i would say the people who appear on 500 pound life have probably done a lot more with their lives than the average redditor lol
My partner has binge ate and became overweight because of similar drama to this. It's nice to see someone that can not only empathize, but also EXPLAIN WHY you should think about someone's past life experiences when you judge them for being obese or overweight. Thank you ♥
I'm on a downfall on my weight for my age, and I'm only in my mid-teens. I'm already on the obesity scale. Dr. Mike just motivated me to get up and do something about it. Thank you so much.

As someone who have struggled with underweight all of her life I find both very sad and interesting how body shaming, either fat or skinny, never takes into consideration health, is all about looks.
Agreed. Being enthusiastic about how thin someone is can be just as damaging as acting disgusted around a large person. You don't know why they are the way they are. That thin person you're enthusiastically complimenting may well be suffering from an eating disorder or some other condition.
My boyfriend has lost 30 pounds in two months (185 months to 155, we’re getting tests done to find out why) and the amount of people who have been skinny shaming him is RIDICULOUS. I wish people just wouldn’t comment about your size. Most of the time the person is already highly aware of it.
@@skippy.9865 I hope there's a cause found, with a solution in place 🙏 I think the most vulgar part is how some people will rush to compliment you on your weight loss, beg for tips, even if you were healthy before and are now facing a health scare or bad diagnosis.
Just my experience, but keeping myself at around 10% body fat (basically no visible fat anywhere) feels really good so far and I don't see a problem with keeping this up forever. Then again, I am really not eating a lot and I was never a big eater. So it doesn't feel right to compare how healthy/unhealthy this with someone that is really overweight.
I did the surgery last year. It is a huge life-changing situation for me. I'm glad I did it. It changes my relationship with food. Thank you for addressing this topic.
I had the surge about 5 years ago. It's easy the fall into old traps, especially snacking. I've put about half the weight back on. I wish you continued success. Be better than me.
@A. Brown Ours did for a short while, but then my husband's insurance changed to a different BC/BS plan. (We were able to get our daughters weight loss surgery done, at least. She was the most important one at the time). I wonder if I could get my doctor to write something up to see if they might cover it considering it could help with medical issues that I have tremendously. I wasn't that big before, but I had a knee replacement (when I was 36) that got infected and 5 surgeries later, I have terrible pain.
im tearing up because it makes me so happy to finally see someone GET BETTER and not worse, she seems like such a amazing person and the type of woman i would love to just talk for hours to know her deeper because she is and seems like someone that went through so much and was able to get better even when her own doctor was so bad, she is so amazing and i hope she feels proud of herself completely and is going to therapy
Love the level of sympathy and understanding Dr. Mike has for people suffering from morbid obesity. I see too many people who seem completely lose their humanity and ability to empathize simply because they assume these people did this to themselves. And even if they did, doesn’t mean they’re unworthy of empathy.
Absolutely! It’s almost like those that judge on sight alone, have dehumanized the person to the point where it’s OK to belittle them and their character or motivations, and then they feel no regret or guilt over doing so, because they did not consider that individual as a whole human being… my two cents 🙏
I always think this because when I watch this programme a lot of the patients can’t afford the care they actually need, hence why going on the show is their only option! But sometimes the patients don’t seem to get continued care in the long term
They actually do. They argue with insurance companies and counsel patients (send them to financial counseling) and try to go by what’s covered as much as possible. They’ll also tell you if something is not covered
@@JDMimeTHEFIRSTI agree. I've seen doctors screaming on the phone at insurance companies because they won't pay for something when the patient desperately needs it. They absolutely fight for your financial ability to pay for your health care
First of all they do. Second of all, if you're dying the doctor's going to care about making sure you're not dying. A doctor is there to present you with healthcare that will stop you from dying. If you can't afford it then you die. What's the doctor supposed to do?
I always find it hard to understand how, here in the UK and over in the US, this type of illness does not have a multi discipline approach. Right from the start her story told me this was self medicating with food at the onset of her ptsd, caused by being held at gun point. Moreover, the the surgeon had absolutely zero understanding of the fear concept. She refused to try to walk, we all put off scary things, for this lady, she had come to rely on others to live her life for her, the fear of putting herself ina bad situation had caused that. To suddenly change and take responsibility must have been as scary as hell. Refusing to walk was her self protection against opening that door she had locked after her assault. Furthermore, the fear of failure would have been feeding her mental health. I am right there with @doctormike, his combative attitude to a closed patient was quite awful. If patients like this lady saw things simply as don't his or that, they wouldn't have been in this position to start with. She needed mental health support from the start, she needed ptsd support from the start. Whether it is drugs, alcohol or food, a lot of medical professionals fail to link self medicating and simply put these patients in to a negative category of 'Lazy, greedy, weak willed, addictrd'. So proud to see she found the right people, the right attitude. Great video to share Doctor. Hope others seeing this get the support for their journey.
In the UK it is a multi-disciplinary approach. I have a team of people who are guiding my journey currently. I have access to a mental health team, a team of dieticians who truly have revolutionised my thinking about food, a diabetes team who speak to me regularly and explain my treatment thoroughly to me and I even have my dog thanks to the physical therapy team who asked me one simple question: "what will motivate you to walk?" And it has worked! I went from being housebound to going out with my dog, rain or shine every day. My mood has improved and my health is better. I still have a long road ahead, but when you have a supportive team around you, it is amazing how much that helps. So yes, I am extremely grateful to the multi-disciplinary team that are working to help me and many other folks just like me.
Actually Dr now (that's how some of his patients call him) work with a team of other specialist. And like any doctor his speciality is to work with very over weight people ( starting around 300 lb, if I recall proprely). People whom are so overweight don't become overweight over night. It takes years, 1 or 3 lb every years, slowly but surely.
I have a genetic disability where my bones break super easy. I can understand how someone can have a fear of falling thus walking and standing can sometimes feel impossible. It’s not necessarily that the person doesn’t want to try, but the fear of injury and significant pain are real, especially in an early rehabilitation stage where there is a greater likelihood that you can get hurt. But even small steps like leg lifts standing for a second, or standing in a pool can lead to better and better outcomes. Good on Dr. Mike understanding that it helps to empathize with the patient and that a patient isn’t intentionally being difficult if they’re slow to improve.
The second I saw her stand up I started clapping and I am so proud of her and how far she’s come. Her determination helps motivate me to take care of myself and work to improve my life❤❤
I feel really bad for Marla. She seemed like she was in so much pain, (physically, emotionally and mentally), and i'm glad that she's on the road to living a happier and healthier life. We as a society really need to start looking at cases like hers with less judgement and instead do our best to offer as much help and support as they may want or need.
@@zanemain9951 Drug addicts suffer actual withdrawal, it's understandable that they have trouble quitting. All that happens when you stop stuffing your face is you lose weight and feel better. Not a good comparison.
@Samara Hamilton They absolutely do. The issue is someone that becomes 800 pounds doesn't have the self control and the mentality to accept that they are the source of their condition and that they can fix it. If they could do that they wouldn't be 800 lbs.
I particularly value a lot how she didn't take her first doctor's bs anymore, particularly seeing how she had had an abusive relationship with at least one other man in the past. I think it must have been a great step forwards for her to have that attitude towards him in the end. Her saying "you're not treating me fairly" is her saying "I deserve better, I deserve to be treated with basic human respect and care" which I can't stress enough how important of an accomplishment it is. Maybe that's one of the moment in her process where she clicked and made a huge step forwards internally which then manifested further in her great physical recovery.
@@AyaanKhan-tb2ot Still. No matter how little effort she made, he shouldn't be getting mad at her, also as Dr.Mike said this man didn't even try to resolve the conflict, he kept pushing it further (like comparing her to other patients what a terrible thing to do), and I understand she may have not been an angel but she's a patient with mental and physical problems and its pretty common to get irritated easily when you're sick. + she seem to be doing much better when she changed her doctor which tells you that the change of doctor was actually good for her
@@AyaanKhan-tb2ot I see what you're saying, I truly didn't mean to paint him as a villain, but rather, as a morally complex person just as any other human being is. I just wanted to highlight that moment of her standing for herself to give her the credit she deserves. I absolutely think there are no black and white cases where one person is 100% right and the other is 100% wrong, it's all complex and complicated. I just discovered you by watching this interesting and informative video on Marla's weight loss journey. Your explanations about the medical and psychological reasons that certainly led to her being morbidly obese, were enlightning. I must also say that I was touched to see that you truly could see other reasons that led to her condition, besides "being lazy". I can't wait to watch your other videos, including your response to the Reddit post accusing you of being fatphobic, that you mentioned. My first impression, based on this video, is of a knowledgeable, understanding and empathic doctor. You have a great capacity to make medical information accessible to most people. This is a great gift that I encourage you to continue sharing it! Best, M.

Never thought Dr. Mike was fat phobic. He has said in many videos about how too many doctors will look at someone's weight and blame their weight on whatever problem instead of looking deeper. Dr. Mike has a lot of compassion for people, and I wish we had more doctors like him.
There’s people out there who believe if you use constructive criticism instead of completely agreeing and letting people be you’re putting that person down. It’s ridiculous.
@Blake Wright in a sense, technically speaking, it is a put down. Mostly putting down the behavior that led to it, but a put down nonetheless. However, if the statement is true, then it’s necessary. There’s no sense in getting upset over the truth no matter how harsh it might be I’ve said many times that while I understand the importance of being tactful, I will never compromise honesty to spare one’s feelings
You can blame it on weight tho if you're 300 pounds with no diseases or syndromes then yeah it's your own fault for being overweight and that's fine aslong as you take action and do something about it, ( Ik this may come off as rude but I mean it) I used to be overweight 5'7 and 203 pounds roughly but after working out and changing my diet I was able to lose about 20 pounds and now I'm at 5'8 and 180ish which is still probably fat to yall but I'm proud of losing so much weight and Ik that one day I'll be looking like dr mike 😂 (This doesn't apply to people with disorders like eating disorders or people with actual disabilities only people like me who were very lazy and dint care what I ate)
When she appeared on that talk show I didn't even recognize her until she started talking. That's some huge leap she made. A lot of people wouldn't have managed to complete this journey. Probs to her!
I love that Dr. Mike isn't just a pretty face. Usually people, in general, do not have a shred of empathy for overweight people. He's considering all her needs and is fully aware of physical, mental, emotional, and socioeconomic factors. Your patients and followers are lucky to have Dr. Mike.

As a registered dietitian, we would neverrrrrrr restrict a patient that much calorically. We use an adjusted body weight formula that is realistic for that specific patient. Ugh, this show makes me so frustrated. Thank you Dr. Mike for showing empathy and spreading accurate knowledge on obesity.
I haven’t even graduated high school yet (Going into my second-to-last year currently) but I remember a history lesson (Context: some famine from AP Global Modern History) mentioning that 1,000 is the absolute MINIMUM caloric intake level for the average person to live (Assuming that there’s 200 calories per day), and I read the description and I swear, the color in my face drained from how much they’ve restricted Marla to-way too harsh, even from my very basic understanding
@@Feimichaas someone who has had bariatric surgery myself, although I was a lot smaller than people on this show, there is another reason why it is so drastic that isn’t communicated very well here. The liver. If they go on a low calorie diet and only eat certain things (mainly protein) their liver will shrink somewhat. They need it to shrink as much as possible prior to surgery, as it has to be physically moved and can be dangerous if it is enlarged. I had to do that but for a much shorter period of time and was warned that, if they opened me up and found it was still too big, they would close me up again and not do the surgery.
But this wasn't supposed to be realistic in terms of behavior. They were not trying to treat her addiction, they were treating her body. The lady had some dire health issues and removing as much weight as possible as quickly as possible for a person with almost zero mobility was the only way to try and stabilize her. For her, a long car ride was nearly fatal so I understand doctors wanting to be aggressive in trying to reduce her weight. Plus after she had bariatric surgery she prob couldn't consume that much anyway. Often patients are on liquid and/or soft food diets for several weeks after and sometimes before surgery. I think people just see the number 1000 calories and are automatically triggered to think it's bad b/c it seems so insufficient but there are plenty of situations where it's fine. One of the purposes of body fat is to sustain you when you don't have enough food. It's okay sometimes to not have enough food, our bodies are well equipped to deal with this.
Caloric restriction makes sense, but you're right, it shouldn't be done to an extreme. You can't quick-fix being 600-800lb. A measured, structured plan that spans a couple years is a smarter option. It will not only be safer, but a long term plan will also provide the structure needed to move forward and keep weight off successfully.
@@Hank.. but they need a quick fix so surgery is safer, this is basically the classic liver reducing diet done before all bariatric surgeries, just for longer.

100% agreed, a sharp quality of life decrease is what motivated me to change my ways. I developed Ideopathic Intracranial Hypertension, almost certainly due to my morbid obesity. Now I'm losing 1.3kgs a week and I'll be out of the morbid obesity spectrum by the end of the summer, and then hopefully by next summer not obese at all. Waking up with constant headaches and your vision being fucked due to optical nerve swelling caused by intracranial hypertension is no fun, that's for sure.
I was diagnosed with IIH and after losing like 80+ pounds it basically went away. I used to get extreme pressure behind my eyes and it would be agonizing for 30 minutes to an hour, a few times (3-5/7 days, sometimes more) a week. I would consider literally pulling my eyes out a lot lol. It was completely incapacitating when it happened too. IIH is pretty rough

This was genuinely inspiring to watch! I came close to having an ED in junior high, when I was in the thick of my mental health journey. I’m in college now-I’ll be 21 in June-and I still kinda struggle with keeping a healthy body image. I ended up snacking my way through midterms last month, so I’m restarting a Mediterranean diet to make my jeans more comfortable. I’m in the first week, so it’s tough to let go of some of my favorite foods, but I’m already feeling better. Taking that first step is always the hardest, but every step you take gets easier! I will have to break my diet tomorrow because I’m getting bubble tea with my friend, but it just means I’m going to do a little extra walking so I can earn that bubble tea. (And I always get half sugar anyway.)
It’s an addiction that comes from trauma. I can relate to this and I started making myself sick to purge and eventually went to alcohol.. I was miserable and I really want anyone with any addiction or people who suffer with anything like this or this addiction itself to remember you’re not alone. We love you ❤ I wish this doctor would have been mine during my issues, he cares. I’d just be the same as him with any patients I would have. A genuine heart of gold
This made me tear up. Nobody should be restricted of being able to live a normal life and I’m glad we put in the effort to make these recoveries. I appreciate Dr.Mike for being so open-minded and understanding. Sending love 💖
Hey, absolutely nothing wrong with being slightly overweight, especially if you take care of yourself in order to try to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. And if anyone bullies you over something you have no control over while you are trying to take care of yourself, then they can just go to hell. Is there something wrong with being 500 pounds overweight on purpose? Yes. Is there something wrong with being 10-20 pounds overweight while attempting to stay healthy? Absolutely not. Everyone's body type is different and frankly these "recommended bod types" are just flat out insulting. Ex; I have larger sized breasts and naturally bigger thighs, but no stomach fat. Apparently though, my breasts and thighs make me "overweight" for my 5'2 height. lol like I can actually help any of that!
definitely, with my height, im supposed to be about 10-20 lighter than I am now. dont get me wrong, im pretty muscular too because i love to be active, but this video definitely made me wanna change those eating habits and become even more active to prevent having to live through something as difficult as this. this woman is her own hero ( with lots of credit to the people who helped her as well ofc)

I love how Dr. Mike said it was an aggressive diet. I personally feel like these patients would have an easier time adjusting to a new diet in steps, like slowly weening things in or out.
I question if she had enough time for a slower diet (her health was a mess) and that doctor probably had other patients coming. Resources are limited, better a more agressive aproach if that translate into more people having the oportunity to get a chance at a hospital bed.
@@gillifish if you let people who have been overindulging in food for years without end so intuitive eating, you’ll end up with them or loosing the weight at all. But life is drastic and they should be thankful they get another chance at life, a lot of people with real illnesses don’t get that.
I’m so impressed Dr. Mike. Your professional and compassionate assessment on how to address of her situation is true, mature, and should be practiced not only by doctors but people everywhere. Bless you kind soul! 😭💜😊
Dr. Mike, you are such an inspiring content creator. Thank you genuinely for being your kind, authentic self and showing us that not all doctors are ignorant and selfish, bc I have had mostly awful experiences with them. But you're doing great things. Also that woman's transformation is just beyond insane, she looks amazing.
I, too, have had a string of poor doctors so I know what you mean. It has taught me to question EVERYTHING doctors say and not put them on a pedestal (they do enough of that on their own). They are experts in their field; I am the expert of my body. And I really believe they become very arrogant because people treat them like they're some kind of God, when some of them are not even very good human beings.
As someone who is overweight: there is a balance to found between fat-shaming and true, objective medical care for those who are overweight. Ignoring medical conditions like diabetes or quality of life detriments like literally being unable to walk is not medical care. I really think you do a great job of respecting the patients from an empathetic viewpoint while still acknowledging the facts of their health and what needs to happen to help them.
There's no balance to be found... it should be 100% true, objective medical care for those who are overweight (taking into account all conditions and quality of life), and 0% fat-shaming... why would you want to find a balance between those two things??

If only they could go on carnivore and see if it helps.

As a bariatric surgeon, I love how Dr. Mike doesn't say it's good or bad. I like how he says it has its risks but is very helpful when used correctly.
how does bariatric surgery work i i may ask? /genuine
Seeing the process most likely shows you why its only done in extreme cases-its extremely invasive and requires a lot of changes in diet.

i have always wondered, how can you ever get to that point to grow so much that you cant move, i mean wouldnt somebody think that there is a problem that needs action already when you reach the 150kg mark? i'm not judging, im just curious because i feel like the point where you need treatment and help is far earlier than that point. marla could look for help 200kg ago for example, why did she wait til that point? for example even her daughter looks very unhealthy but she doesnt look like she is looking to improve, is she waiting to end up same as her mother or what? i mean i understand that gaining weight patologies are a thing, but why people keeps going way far beyond the limit before asking any help? for example you could see marla early in the video despite having the health issues, she was eating 5 or 6 cheese burgers and plenty of desserts, she cant obviously get those herself it was the daughter that was giving her, i cant believe that they realized it was a problem only once they reached the 350kg mark, maybe people cant control themselves but thats not an excuse for people around you imo, your family/friends MUST do something. if i had my mother come to that point for example i would just tell her "if you want a cheese burger you'd better get up and get it yourself, from me you are going to have only healthy food until you wont be better"
i love how brave marla was and now after losing 500+ pounds, she’s telling people to seek help for their issues and overcome problems with others. i’m so happy marla finally could move around and do things she couldn’t do before, and so happy that her life has changed for the better

True. They might’ve done that behind the scenes
They usually do, after the first season of this show, years ago, it became pretty common

@in desperate need of a scotch She literally couldn't move because of her weight......
@in desperate need of a scotch if losing weight was that easy, everyone would be thin

Same thoughts here!
As a fat person I agree, when I see people try to have an honest and frank discussion about obesity, there is always someone nearby to shout down the conversation.
Yeah people should listen before they slap on the fat phobic label
as someone with a weight that is definitely unhealthy (I recently accidentally lost about 30 pounds, which puts me in an unhealthy weight range), I notice that I get treated very differently than other people with unhealthy weights (people who are over-weight)... everyone always gives the excuse of "it's for their own good, they're unhealthy!" to justify their behavior towards fat people, but for some reason nobody at all has gotten on my case, or harassed or insulted me, or even asked "how could you let this happen??" And I haven't faced any bias or mistreatment, or even confrontation from medical providers. So personally, I think fatphobia is very real and very prominent, both conscious and internalized, and something that should be talked about more. Dr. Mike just isn't fatphobic though, if that's what you're talking about. He's against fatphobia, like he said in the video.
It’s become so insane that veterinarians are even reticent to tell their clients that their pets are overweight!

Nine years this coming August since diagnosis and doing great! Apologies for the lengthy comment🥴.

I agree. Gaining weight can sneak up on a person. I gained almost 15 pounds before I realized it. I was stress eating after a life-altering incident and my thinking was not on a good path. I am now seeing a therapist and working with a dietitian/trainer. God Bless!

2:50 as a formerly obese person i cried hearing this. People never know what i used to look like but under my clothes are flaps of spare skin from over 100lbs of weight loss. The things people say to me now about other obese people without them knowing i used to be obese myself, makes me sick. They probably talked about me the same way when my back was turned. I struggled immensely with mental health and all shame did was make me eat more. Being bullied and shamed started my eating problems in the first place, why the hell would more of it help me?

This video made me so happy, Marla's story is really inspirational and I thank you for sharing it with us. Also, your empathy and insights into what Marla was thinking and how the doctors could help Marla get better were excellent. It's easy to read/watch a few things online and think that all overweight people are lazy, unmotivated, or in denial, but they aren't! A lot of them want to get better but they can't/struggle because of past life experiences or medical conditions.
Exactly, people must start supporting these types of cases!!
Well this is just a clip. If you watch the whole episode, she was horrible. She was lazy and didn't want to even try.
How much of that though was carefully edited to make better TV though? There must have been hours upon hours of interactions between them that will never be seen that led to that moment. I am not gonna condemn either of them because we do not have the full story.
Knowing TLC, it wouldn't surprise me if it's just because of dramatic editing.

My mother is 5'2" and weighed nearly 300 lbs before her gastric bypass. While it wasn't as extreme as this she was suffering greatly. Looking healthy is not much of a goal- taking charge of your health and doing what you can do make it better is much more worthwhile.

I agree fully. I have been obese all my life and my adult son has been underweight all his life.
My boyfriend has lost 30 pounds in two months (185 months to 155, we’re getting tests done to find out why) and the amount of people who have been skinny shaming him is RIDICULOUS. I wish people just wouldn’t comment about your size. Most of the time the person is already highly aware of it.
@@skippy.9865 I hope there's a cause found, with a solution in place 🙏
I think the most vulgar part is how some people will rush to compliment you on your weight loss, beg for tips, even if you were healthy before and are now facing a health scare or bad diagnosis.

@A. Brown Ours did for a short while, but then my husband's insurance changed to a different BC/BS plan. (We were able to get our daughters weight loss surgery done, at least. She was the most important one at the time).
Something I truly appreciate being inserted into this conversation is the costs. Too often doctors don't take these issues into consideration at all.
THANK YOU!
@@tashlan4164 Thank you for your encouraging testimony. I wish you all the happiness you can handle!

His bs? You mean the truth? Marla was being a stuck up bimbo and Dr. Now was telling her what she needs to do to be healthy
@@AyaanKhan-tb2ot Still. I’ve said many times that while I understand the importance of being tactful, I will never compromise honesty to spare one’s feelings
You can blame it on weight tho if you're 300 pounds with no diseases or syndromes then yeah it's your own fault for being overweight and that's fine aslong as you take action and do something about it,
( Ik this may come off as rude but I mean it)
I used to be overweight 5'7 and 203 pounds roughly but after working out and changing my diet I was able to lose about 20 pounds and now I'm at 5'8 and 180ish which is still probably fat to yall but I'm proud of losing so much weight and Ik that one day I'll be looking like dr mike 😂

Mike just explaining this, pointing out bad things about the doctor, being so mindful and gentle and he
does everything a doctor should do as advice over the internet makes me so happy

Dr. Mike, your empathy is so amazing and refreshing. It look at things like this objectively and I wish more doctors were like you. You can say yes this thing is unhealthy, but let’s figure out the core of the reason for the unhealthy thing. Thank you
11:58 I love that Dr. Mike messes up his words here and just pushes straight through it and keeps going lol. So much confidence it ends up being funny instead of awkward or embarrassing. I'm going to try doing this when I mess up my words lol because I do that a lot and it ends up giving me anxiety about speaking my mind.
I'm proud of you for doing what you can to change. :)
So be proud of you,God bless
Great job William! So happy you are on your way to a better quality of life.
IIH is pretty rough
good luck on your journey!!
16:06 I was waiting for her to walk in, she was seated right there. I'm so happy for her. She just motivated me to new levels. Nothing is truly impossible
Same. I was like “where is she?” Then they zoomed in and I was shocked.
Same honestly
I genuinely smiled when I saw her transformation. She seems like such a strong woman and Im glad that she overcame her struggles.
She looked so happy!
SHE IS a strong Woman, there is no other way her body could have survive like that if she wasn’t strong.
I hope you’re doing better now because the world is better with you in it ❤
This made me tear up. Nobody should be restricted of being able to live a normal life and I’m glad we put in the effort to make these recoveries. On a physical level, I am slightly overweight and this video made me feel motivated to go out and exercise because you really never know if something awful may happen to you and cause a negative impact as severe as this.
I wish you luck in your fitness journey!!! Keep working 💪 But be sure to take it easy on yourself sometimes! You're gonna need that rest so your muscles have time to recover.
@@zyncwargaming179 No it's not. Even just being 30kg (65lb) overweight makes you obese unless you're like 2m+ tall, with increased chances of a myriad of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
@@Alexandra-rb7ju "over something you have no control over"
You have FULL control over your weight. There are no ninja squads coming to your home at night to inject your salad with butter. If you don't want to put in the extra effort to lose those last 5-10kg to get to your ideal weight because your current one is fine then fine, you don't HAVE to. I could stand to lose 5kg myself. But stop pretending it's somehow impossible.
I really love how well you inform us what's going on, and have so much sympathy and are so aware of mental issues too.
I’m really proud of Marla after watching this and I’m glad she was able to find a physician who was less confrontational and treated her with respect.
Dr. Now was just calling her on her BS.
Sometimes, even with good doctors, personalities just don't mesh. It's commendable that she could go all the way through her journey.
@@AnimeMovement Dr. Now needs to get called on his BS too. His attitude towards his patients is poor and often counter productive.

The vast majority of people dont have some sob story backstory. Its an addiction like drugs or an eating disorder like BED. There is personal responsibility involved. You DO NOT get to that kind of weight without it being your own fault.
There’s no such thing as “ fat shaming”. If you’re fat, you’re fat. It’s FACT.

I was shocked to see she was put on a 1000 calories diet. I take 1800-2300, only having 1 meal a day will make me non-functional
Yes! I think the best option is teaching them intuitive eating. It saved my life from multiple eating disorders, one extreme and the other.
@@gillifish if you let people who have been overindulging in food for years without end so intuitive eating, you’ll end up with them or loosing the weight at all. I respect that the doctor doesn’t take bullshit from patients - he puts them on these diets to see if they can actually commit and loose the weight. Is it drastic? Maybe. I agree
Casey is a very good example of someone who through hard work achieved a healthier and better way of living.
He was a champ
Really though!
