    I had pregnancy-induced pica due to anemia! I wasn't getting enough iron anymore and I would get INTENSE cravings to eat sand. I remember the first time it happened. I was looking out of my apartment window down at the courtyard in front and there was a sandbox set up for the kids living in the complex... and I just got this sudden intense craving to go downstairs and eat a fistful of the sand. I used to surf, so I know what taking a mouthful of sand feels and tastes like, and my mind was recreating it like "ooo yum wouldn't it be SO fun to feel that gritty CRUNCH between your teeth?" I immediately called my OB/GYN who had me come in right then. Even worse? He had a cactus garden outside his office FULL of sand and I had to physically restrain myself from going and eating the sand. It's SO freaky because your brain is telling you that this is as necessary as water and as delicious as your favorite meal on the planet.

      @KT-Kaboom It's amazing how much a brain can change while pregnant. I'm sure the doc hooked you up with some supplements that hopefully curbed those cravings. I just can't imagine how sad that first woman was to find comfort in the corn starch, but if her emotional joy was connected to that craving it's understandable. Neuro-plastic changes due to hormone fluctuations are incredibly potent, it's why men are so wreckless and make such poor decisions compared to women in late adolescence and early adulthood. Some men never age out of them and leave terrible comments after vulnerable stories like yours. It's amazing they are still given the right to vote.

      It's empathy without enabling, a good practice that a lot of doctors don't have. It's so easy to tell someone not to do something when that person already realizes it's bad for them, when really it needs to be figuring out *why* that person is doing something.

  • @Neurospicybunny
    @Neurospicybunny 2 месяца назад +3427

    I'm a mental health therapist and have an eating disorder myself and am just as frustrated (at least) as Dr. Mike is with these "professionals." The thing that stands out to me and bothers me so much is how it seems like they're casting a moral judgment on these people and shaming them, when food is morally neutral. It has nothing to do with being a good person, being a smart person, etc. They need compassionate and nonjudgmental help, just like someone with any other medical issue. And, I fear that having this type of experience of feeling shamed could turn them off to therapy and prevent them from getting help in the future.

    • @Alrune18
      @Alrune18 2 месяца назад +57

      thats exactly it. I am working toward becoming a therapist myself and in my mind this so harmful to the individuals that sign a contract to be on tv but do they know that they are going to be shown in a negative light. To me this is sooo scummy and frankly unethical in so many ways.

    • @Neurospicybunny
      @Neurospicybunny 2 месяца назад +24

      @Alrune18 Yes, I feel like it's unethical for any helping professional to treat someone seeking help in that manner (with shame tactics and the judgmental tones), and definitely doing so with a large audience just adds to it, even with any signed agreements. I don't know how informed the participants were or weren't about everything, but I think it's the responsibility of any licensed professional to act ethically, cameras or not, period. That's why it gets kind of icky for me using people's problems and treatment for entertainment. When the entertainment starts to be prioritized over everything else, it becomes exploitative. But I think there can be good ways of doing it, if it's focused on the education part and displaying issues that need visibility.

      I could not agree more, i went through a severe bout of gastritis through which i could barely eat, now I've developed an eating disorder and have very few things i can eat, at first it was just chicken yakisoba and chicken and vegetable dumplings then i worked myself up to chicken and turkey wraps, beef stroganoff, cheese pizza (no more pepperoni or uncured hams or meats or ham in general) and one of things i was happiest about was spaghetti, i missed it dearly, i can eat a lot more now than i was eating during the 7+ months i was super sick and it's still ongoing.
      While i am able to eat more than i was I'm also incredibly financially low and all our ssi goes to bills mainly and our EBT doesn't last long cause we get about $270 ish a month and we get it nearly at the end of each month for two. In the economy. Thankfully aldis and krogers and dollar trees exist but it's still hard and most days I'm eating mainly soup and occasionally dumplings, when we get the ebt we buy lots of chicken and ingredients mainly which last a while due to the ability to freeze things but I'm struggling to get my weight back up which dropped from 110 lbs to 95 lbs, it kinda floats in between those two but I can't get it back over 100, for context I'm 18 soon to be 19 so 95 ish isn't great and i so badly want to being my weight back up but eating is hard
      If i dealt with another person like this i would probably go off on them too, the last girl wasn't even morbidly obese as she put it, she was super gorgeous and you could just see her self confidence draining from her as that lady droned on 😒
      food pantries just give us junk, you can't trust the food unless it's canned and even then it's iffy. Lots of dates and nuts and frozen blueberries and stuff we physically can't eat so we take it up to our library to donate it to anyone else who needs it and can eat it

In my 20's it was: salt and vinegar over ice, lemons and salt, salt and vinegar with packets and packets of tomatoes as well as tomato juice, salt and vinegar (no alcohol).
    This carried on until age 40, when I had a perforated ulcer and nearly died.

    I saw your interview on the fellas podcast and was blown away by how straight talking and eloquent you were with everything you discussed. It is so surprising and refreshing to see a medical professional take a truly scientific approach to their presence online, rather than leaning into the entertainment aspect, to the detriment of giving sound medical opinion. As someone who has worked regularly with obtaining several medical opinions in complex personal injury situations, I know well how bias, age of the doctor, lack of willing to stay up to date in their field and just straight up being a bad doctor can massively throw off the medical advice given to a patient. It is terrifying how little control people have over the quality of the doctors they have at their darkest times. I am not saying that people should check the CVs of every doctor in their local area before choosing who will help them if they have a heart attack, but blindly following people on social media who have a degree in biology or are doctors who have questionable ethics is way too common today. Thanks for being the voice of scrutiny and actually empowering people to consider their health rather than chasing fads

    I did not expect Dr Mike to have a true classic ad. Legitimately love those shirts. Bought for my husband last year and he looks so handsome in them, they look way better than normal tshirts.

    As someone with a lot of texture issues with food and an addictive personality I appreciate you calling them out on the ridiculous shenanigans just for the sake of views, so stupid and wasteful and not mentally helpful at all.
    Because of my texture issues I sometimes randomly get really obsessed with a particular food and at one point in time that was pepperoni and I was completely addicted to it so I understand some of the mental components and I totally feel for them.

    If your confused about why people were walking on the cornstarch it's because when it's mixed with water it becomes a non Newtonian fluid, when it gets impacted it becomes a solid & if you stand init for a while you gradually sink into it.

    Basically, just showing her, herself in the mirror, and calling her fat. This creates way more problems.
    I feel like the host is getting satisfaciton by making her feel bad about herself and shame her on tv

    when you mix cornstarch with water you get oobleck which is a non-newtonium substance which basically just means that if you hit it hard or walk over it its solid and when you slowly touch it its a fluid

    i'm so glad dr. mike is pointing out how showing the amount they eat isn't going to do much - and there's an episode of this show that comes to mind. a woman was drinking over 20 cans of cola a day, and by the end of their treatment, literally nothing changed and she didn't see the impact of their shock therapy. i'm glad we have dr. mike doing this for the internet :)

    2:17. As a psych student, we’re taught that “scaring people straight” is one of the least ineffective methods to help individuals in situations like smoking or alcohol abuse. In this scenario, I feel like it’s only done for the TV purposes, and is really ineffective in helping these people with their food struggles. But again, I’m a psych student so I’m still learning 😅

    Also, is she craving this due to an actual nutritional deficit? She mentioned pregnant women. Chocolate is often craved because of a magnesium deficiency. Pickles often due to a need for sodium. I wonder if the cornstarch is a sleep issue or sickle cell and need for fast carbs for energy. Or a need for zinc and iron. This is why real bloodwork and testing is needed. I doubt it's just psychological.

    I have a salt addiction i think? I eat lots of pickles, olives, and sea salt popcorn. Then my mom introduced me to air fry garlic paprika garbanzos. They are slightly salty. I used to eat lots of chips and salsa, but now i use carrot chips.

      That could be likely. Her mention of cheese being “safe” because it won’t make her sick makes me wonder if she also has emetophobia (fear of vomiting).

    14:37 a better question is "Why does Mikey have a printed polo shirt with the same logo as the company with the dialysis setup?" I mean I have zero experience with those places, but do they have a gift shop where you can buy their shirts? Do you get a free shirt with every dozen cleanings? Or based on how silly that show is, my guess is Mikey really just someone who works for the company and they needed someone to step in and give a PSA. and he may not really have kidney failure?
