I think Meta will be on a list like this eventually. Imagine trying to get your mostly older user base to use VR for things they can already do more efficiently.
Meta is not the only company pursuing the metaverse concept, Facebook rebranding themselves as "Meta" was just a ploy to get people to associate Facebook with all of the metaverse, which is excellent marketing.
I'm surprised that the Microsoft Teams app glitch that prevented people from calling emergency services wasn't mentioned. It was so bad that Google needed to email people who had the bugged version of the app to ask them to update

Thank you for another great list! I do have to disagree with you on Skype, though. Microsoft didn't buy Skype to compete with Zoom, they bought it for Teams. The fact that it had a consumer following was nice, but for everyone who uses Zoom for external calls, I bet you they're making 10x as many calls on Teams, and if Microsoft didn't have a solid video conferencing solution, Teams would have crashed and burned. So it's annoying that they didn't keep up with the consumer side, but that wasn't really the main point.
Exactly and they had it as a im and meeting program before teams was released in fact my company still used Skype in the office up until 2018 and then I think Microsoft kind of pushed everyone to teams

The sheet amount of effort Arun puts in his video is phenomenal! Hell he even made sure whatever virtual fake thing he put in the bin actually sounded like how it would've had sounded had he dropped the original thing. I came across his channel recently and damn! easily the best channel on RUclips.
Only thing I think you missed a bit on was Skype. Microsoft certainly didn’t soar with it directly, but they essentially bought it to jump start what is now Teams and Teams is really the primary meeting and communication app next to email in the corporate world. Zoom came and went with the pandemic, with some circles still over there, but Teams is here to stay for business. It wasn’t quite ready yet in early 2020, but it’s ubiquitous now and anchors the office 355 user base.
It exists, but in the background. The best time to grow and capitalize the online video conference market was unfortunately the pandemic. And while Teams still exists, and Zoom is almost gone, Teams still missed the biggest payday of our lives.
@@stansman5461 I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Teams is very much in the foreground of businesses using Microsoft 365 products. Not "all" businesses use 365 products of course, but around 20 Billion in revenue last I saw is a big chuck, and every one of those companies gets Teams for free and a large portion of them use it for at least business chat and video if not also external collaboration. If you mean to say that the public market of consumers doesn't see Teams much, that is true, but that's not, nor was it ever, the target for Teams. Teams wasn't ever trying to capitalize on the public consumer video conference market, they were trying to become the de-facto standard for business collaboration and they've pretty much done that for everyone using 365. And to be clear, I'm not saying nobody in business uses Zoom or others, because many certainly do, but the market share of Teams is unmistakable in the business world.
Yeah. In Buisness, Teams replaces Skype for buisness, taking over the entire VoIP Plattform for big and small companies, while also used for online meetings by many others. Teams also replacing slack and other plattforms, bulldozing into the buisness market thanks to 365 integration. Zoom is dead behind and forgotten in 2023.
I'm a bit of an outlier with my business, industry secrets and my general distrust against big tech. I decided to use a self-hosted solution, which doesn't require an account, application or anything for our customers. They just receive a throwaway weblink. But the system has it's limits. It doesn't work well on mobile and only works with small businesses.
The ZTE Hawkeye sounds like a great idea but the problem is that it only goes for specific people. The specs are bad, the consumers ideas were only cool to a select few and other phone types like gaming phones and high specs, cheap and midranges as well as flagships. To do this is just confusing and wouldn't sell as well if it's only for a select few who like this. Not good for sales. If they want to do this they should've used better hardware and come up with better ideas.
I have a gaming phone. Don't actually use it for that purpose, only have one game on it (Asphalt). Got it because of the specs and price, and also because it has a headphone jack, which is a rarity for a phone made in 2021.
I think yik yak's true downfall was the way they chose to handle the bullying and hate speech. It completely ruined the usability of the app and people had genuinely good ideas of ways to fix it but they did the opposite
@@mamabear9467 Arun has an interesting way to attract both tech enthusiasts and others don’t care about tech. The Skype vs Zoom one was interesting. Having been in the communications industry for almost 20 years, Skype has evolved to the point now where it forms the video aspect of Microsoft Teams - a product that outsells Zoom in both the Public and Private Sectors globally.
@@jpxyUA the premium video calling features of Teams isn’t included as standard, it requires an additional license….so no Also, I’m coming at this from purely a commercial, not a consumer side of things, so very, very different landscape
@@RichMidGaming Thx for the explanation, though I highly doubt Microsoft will differentiate between "premium" and standard users when gloating their user numbers online.
Yeah this one felt wierd to me. I live in Denmark and study here, Microsoft with their product range is just miles ahead of anything we can get, and if you've used Skype before you'd recognise that portion in teams. Which feels just so much more like a professional program than zoom.
As a windows 10 user I can safely say I never specifically went out of my way to look for and download teams, it just appeared on my computer one day and I immediately uninstalled it because I never asked for it, now I'm going out of my way to use zoom since microsoft forced teams onto me.
I wouldn’t consider one coin a fail. Because that was the intention from the start. For it to be a massive scam. I think you should make a separate set of videos for the biggest scams as apposed to putting scams in fail videos
I wouldn't say skype was a COMPLETE failure. They mostly shifted its technology into "Skype for Business" which went on to become Microsoft Teams, which is pretty much the professional standard now for companies using O365.
Yea , but they had everything ! They could have continued their dominance in public eye , but nope they bloated the fack out of it ... I remember every time I started windows to exit skype and at one point closing it from task manager because how difficult Microsoft made it to close skype .
Tbh I'm still using Skype to talk with relatives. They only know that, we started using it in 2016 as it was the best at the time and shifting now it's not easy. Tried using WhatsApp videocalls but while quality has improved there, it's not at the same level yet.
Yeah by the time of the pandemic Skype was already at its planned end of life, and Teams was the go forward app. It is hard to call something a failure when it did exactly what they wanted.
Skype was a huuuuuge fail. I remember using it for instant messaging in high school and remembering the day that I updated it on my iPod Touch, I was in the gym for an assembly. I opened it after updating and thought "yeah, it's time to look for an alternative, I hate what they've done with this" The first thing I remember hating about the changes was moving to cloud storage instead of local storage. I believe before that it was basically device to device, so if you logged in on a new device, your messages would be retrieved from another one? Or you'd at least have a local database on that device. Since then it's just gotten worse and worse.
Ah of course, The Boss blesses us with a final video for 2021. Thank you Arun, Milo and Mr. Whosetheuncle and the team! Y’all have made my 2021 that much better and I truly truly do appreciate it. Have yourselves an awesome new year

I know this is an old post but I've been binging your stuff for a couple of days now. Congrats man, you're obviously a good guy and much love from a new subscriber. Just grow up now😂😂
mixer was actually awesome i was on mixer for about 2 years and in that time it grew tremendously a lot more than people expected and everyone had communities just like on twitch and after it shut down all the communities stayed together moving to twitch
Fun fact: there was also a Power Glove for the N64 that had all the buttons at your fingertips (literally) and the joystick would be controlled with movement of the wrist. The only problem was that it would take a minute or two to adjust to moving the game with your wrist and would hurt your wrist from long usage. This just proves that no matter what the product is, companies never learn from their mistakes.
I had the glove for the N64. I wanted it to work so badly. I thought the concept was awesome. But it wasn't good, sometimes it didn't register the movements of the hand correctly, sometimes you had to reset and recalibrate the glove during the game and as he said in the video: holding up your arm for a long period of time is just tiring.
Similar to the Ayds thing, years ago we did business with a company named Isis... They went under before the whole middle-east debacle, but that was quite memorable :D
What an amazing quality video as always! Thanks for supplying 2021 with high quality and enjoyable videos Arun 🥰😎 I am sure you will reach 10 million subscribers soon, you deserve it!
The thing about Mixer is that not only did Microsoft try to buy their audience, they also bought Mixer. It was originally called Beam, which was built to allow for better interactivity between streamers and users, including easily enabling "twitch plays" type streams. It was a cool concept, I wonder how much potential it would have had if Microsoft never touched it.
Or if Microsoft actually allowed it to grow instead of trying to artificially inflating it. I think beam/mixer would of easily had a chance to do more if it was alive today because people are really getting sick of twitch.
To me skype was more like used for calling people instead of calling on phone. Zoom is in different place, i used it because remote teaching was on zoom. Discord is what took the place of skype for me but it also does more.
Great video! We can see the quality going up in every single release. The amount of time you spend on scripting, filming, set design, graphics, and editing must be astounding!
Similar to the facetime bug, you have the intentional feature in Amazon Echo Shows where you could "drop in" on somebody else's Show, and the call would be automatically picked up after a few minutes. This was quickly removed but still a huge potential issue
Great video, Arun! :) I do have one suggestion, though: I think scams should be put higher on the list than you have them. To me, promising something, taking people's money, and then not delivering, deserves more than 6/10 fail.
@@isaacnoobysmolbrain Yes, but I would point out two things: 1) HIs number 1 fail was a scam. 2) Several entries on the list made it on the list *because* they were scams.

Same I once had to download it pre pandemic for a pre job interview and deleted it afterwards as I didn't think anyone would use it and it was just taking up space on my phone, boy was I wrong 🙃
@@DevinAswani Huh, neat. Good riddance tbh, now we got Discord for gaming and Teams for work and school. Imo Teams fits in well with other work/school oriented Microsoft products. It's a complete package, covering everything you might need.
My first thought as a left-handed person seeing the Nintendo Powerglove would be: Goody, no left-handed powergloves? Yeah, I'll pass, no thanks. And as as a left-handed person with arthritis, the idea of having to wave my entire arm around.... well okay, it might be better than a controller that I can't properly hold and use either.
@@stansman5461Teams are paid by business to be incorporated into company IT system. It’s not targeting the individual customers.
Yea
they brought it back recently but then they completely messed it up with a bad update that they stuck with

The Skype vs Zoom one was interesting. Having been in the communications industry for almost 20 years, Skype has evolved to the point now where it forms the video aspect of Microsoft Teams - a product that outsells Zoom in both the Public and Private Sectors globally.
And by "outsells'' you mean is forced into every Windows 10 and 11 machine on the planet.
@@jpxyUA the premium video calling features of Teams isn’t included as standard, it requires an additional license….so no
Also, I’m coming at this from purely a commercial, not a consumer side of things, so very, very different landscape
I think you should make a separate set of videos for the biggest scams as apposed to putting scams in fail videos
yeah one coin achieved what its made out to do, which is to scam millions of people and make a profit. so yeah technically it was a success
One coin was such a success that the "inventor" had to escape the hoard of followers.

I wouldn't say skype was a COMPLETE failure. They mostly shifted its technology into "Skype for Business" which went on to become Microsoft Teams, which is pretty much the professional standard now for companies using O365.
was kinda mad he missed that
Yea , but they had everything !
Yeah but the consumer version of it got worse and worse which annoyed a lot of its former users.
Skype was a huuuuuge fail. I remember using it for instant messaging in high school and remembering the day that I updated it on my iPod Touch, I was in the gym for an assembly. I opened it after updating and thought "yeah, it's time to look for an alternative, I hate what they've done with this"
The first thing I remember hating about the changes was moving to cloud storage instead of local storage. I believe before that it was basically device to device, so if you logged in on a new device, your messages would be retrieved from another one? Or you'd at least have a local database on that device. Since then it's just gotten worse and worse.
It's been downhill since MSN closed down
My friend uses Skype to text there mom and dad.
I still use Skype to msg my dad😂😂

@Chillzone Gaming me too!!!
I always like the fact he can rickroll us in clever ways

Great video, Arun! :)
I do have one suggestion, though:
I think scams should be put higher on the list than you have them. To me, promising something, taking people's money, and then not delivering, deserves more than 6/10 fail.
If a scam takes money though, then wasn't it a success as it did what it set out to do?
@@isaacnoobysmolbrain I agree w u
@@isaacnoobysmolbrain Yes, but I would point out two things:
1) HIs number 1 fail was a scam.
