I remember begging my mom for a vita and then getting one with uncharted and killzone . It was the most amazing piece of technology I ever owned relative to the year it launched in , it’s a shame they made literally NO games for it . I could swear I would have enjoyed it today if they didn’t literally kill their own console
You could hire about 200k-400k people for the whole time that covid has existed with that money. Like wtf, a team of 10 people who know what they are doing could have done that app and the backend in a week. 5 more for filming a couple of ads, and let's say 5 more for general management.
I remember having both the PSP and the Vita Some of the major upgrades for me were moving away from the disks in those barely protective shells, to an actual cartridge. Bringing the touch pad tech over from the PS4 controller. The fact that it was able to connect to, and be used in conjunction with, a PS4. These things made it really stand out as a handheld. It was just a shame the battery life was pretty bad for the intended use of the Vita

Let’s all be honest, BlockBuster wasn’t a “fail” but it failed as far as being behind in innovation. I felt way more excited to watch a movie when I went to the store with friends or family, had a DVD limit (due to being poor af), being able to see all the posters, newest games with in-person free trial, and getting the occasional microwave popcorn and candy at the check out counter
We used to go to the local equivalent after school a lot of the time, just spend ages browsing movies we knew we wouldn't get to see for a few years, plus because New Zealand was basically living in the past, for a while some stores were getting new release DVDs before the movies were even in our theaters! (the theater chains would buy second hand touched up reels to screen six months after movies were released in the US lol... that had to stop when they tried to get the government to pass a law banning importing dvds of movies that hadn't screened at theaters yet, and everyone realised what they were doing and they were forced to start buying reels the same time they came out in the US.

Hearing how much money was wasted on that NHS app LITERALLY made me feel panicked. The amount of pure incompetence required for the development to cost even a FRACTION of that much is beyond absurd.
That iSmell seems like a great idea to me. Being able to pump smells out while playing a VR game, for example, would seriously add to the Immersion. The smell of burning or gun powder for a war game, or the smell of flowers for one of those calming VR experiences, or literally anything else. How the hell did this idea not take off? Even if you had to sell specific 'smell packs' to use for each particular game or app. I would buy those up in minute.
-Cost/access of refills. How many physical copies of games do you buy? Would you re-buy the Skyrim scent pack when you run out? -Lingering smells. You just finished a round of Tarkov and want to switch over to Minecraft. The fresh breeze smell is overtaken by the old gunpowder smell. -Resolution. How many vials would you be willing to refill/maintain/pay some service to maintain? You could have tailored scents for certain games but 5 scents for 10 games is a rack full of 50 scents that all run empty. I have always been intrigued by the idea of incorporating the neglected senses into VR, but currently I don't think taste or scent is going to be done well.

Gta 5 is fucking amazing in 3D. The only problem is Nvidia doesn't update their drivers to allow 60 Hz 1080p. It's 720p 60 Hz or 1080p 24 Hz. I haven't tried VR but on 3D TV it's amazing. A Sony W955B from 2014. They killed 3D off too fast. Right before it became great really. VR in current form is a real fail imo because almost nobody can afford, place or use it. If some glasses and a blu-ray player are a problem what is a full-on helmet and all that specialized hardware and those cables? Kinekt and other games with 3D TV's that sell real movement like the PS move did would absolutely rocket off the shelves today.
@@zteaxon7787 I was going to mention something on these lines. I had a nice Sony 3D LED TV and gaming on it was awesome due to the high hardware based refresh rate. Mine was 120Hz at a time when 1080p monitors with anything above 60Hz weren't a thing. Yes I know this mean very little today but for the average console gamer, having that kind of response is awesome. (yes, consoles did not support that refresh rate but later, PC did and that kept these TVs relevant). I only replaced mine because I upgraded to a 4K model, also from Sony.
"Smell-O-Vision" was tried in cinemas in the '50s, I think. I heard the fad died out pretty quickly because the scents couldn't be swapped out fast enough during films. Instead they became a muddled mess that irritated audiences and proved difficult to remove from upholstered seats.

I'm inside the tech industry and we get these demos long before the general public sees them (with a sign of an NDA occasionally). Bottom line a lot of these companies ask for our advice, but really don't like it when we come up with the reasons why it'll fail. They ignore it, we get yelled at by management for embarrassing them and then it all turns to crap.
Oh fun fact, that same logic is why the Apollo 2 I believe exploded, The engineers warned the top heads that it was a death trap, and that it was not wise, but Because the higher ups didn't want to hear shit, they just blamed the engineers and said they never warned the heads up
Going to Blockbuster and actually choosing a DVD, or even VHS 😅, was part of the fun, it made it feel special, like a treat instead of flicking all the way thru Netflix and finding nothing to watch anyway.
As many would say, the PSvita was more of a marketing fail, not a tech one (unless we count the gimmick rear touchpad. But again, many more consoles had worse gimmicks that often rendered many things unplayable, yet are considered successful, so this is definitely not such a "tech fail to forget", nowhere as bad as kinect). Many people will say how "it has no games and the very few ones are all anime games or VNs" but i had 2 of them in my lifetime (the first one being stolen, so i bought a refurbished one later on a really good deal), they were 2 different models too. I enjoyed them a lot and i still enjoy the second one, still able to find things to do with it. And as far as anime/VNs go i only had 2 out of dozens of games.
I'd say the tech failure was Sony's stubborn insistence on proprietary media which had been a problem with the company for a while, but reached a boiling point with the Vita because of how expensive the memory cards were, and the fact that they ONLY worked with the Vita and were only ever intended for the Vita vs. the Memory Stick which worked with the PSP and Sony's cameras, music players, cell phones, laptops, and PDAs, basically being a format that lost a format war to SD. I know that was what killed the Vita for me.
The idea of making custom *good* smells for your home isn't even that bad, but it would probably be extremely expensive getting the chemicals. And if you're only using like twelve of them, where would you go with the rest? Buying them all in single packs would require the user to know what those chemicals are, and buying them all would result in so much waste. Good in theory, but I could think of thousands of reasons why it wouldn't be that way
I know, right? I love the smells of scented candles burning but don't use them very often, partly because I worry a lot about fires. (I've just always been paranoid about them since I was little, idk why.) That would be the perfect solution, plus be cheaper and offer more variety.

Programmer here: Using MS Excel (any version) for storing the Covid data is mind boggling insane. If I'd be the boss of a team, the suggestion alone would mean I'd have to think about firing the guy who made it. Excel is not meant for that. At all. This is like you building a warehouse and you choose to use small boxes made to keep Lego separated for that. The Excel format is complicated and wasteful because Excel allows such things as graphs to appear in your table and other gimmicks that a database totally does not need. Even the CSV format, that is a file with everything in clear text, separated by commas, is better for that task. Even MS Office has a better tool for that, MS Access. So, there is exactly zero reason to use Excel. Also, there are some canonical choices for database systems, which to a programmer are widely known. And *way easier* to use than the complicated Excel format. Plus, the Microsoft part implies that the servers run on Windows. Who in gods name runs servers on Windows? So again, mind boggling insane decision.
Wait, so you cannot run a version of MS SQL server on windows? Or run a Windows Server version in a hyper-v virtual machine on windows? A comma delimited file is just a file and excel can be used to open, save, and modify those. This would be the same as a Sqlite file and using a gui to maintain it. Yes there are limitations in excel that do not exist with proper databases (access still has a database size limit and so does the free versions of sql server). Using microsoft excel to store large amounts of records can have its place and probably was suggested by someone that really didn't know better. We have non developers where i work constantly ask for excel files or access databases for listing tons of data because that is just what they know and it is up to those in our Applications Development teams to tell them what they can get and why. I can make any program that writes and modifies files for excel, access, and proper relational databases. They each have their place but when you have people sitting behind a desk asking for things they want, they will ask what they know and AD needs to tell them what actually needs to be done and how depending on their requirements. I am not going to be doing an access database or something every time a customer of mine at work asks for data... Excel is very powerful for what its purpose is if you know how to import data to it and set up queries... You just may not be able to have millions of rows of data and the files may be quite a bit bigger than other solutions but unlike swl server or db2 or other proper database, you dont really need to develop any front end since the users will already know how to use excel and do filters and view data properly. Now, still excel would not be a solution for tracking covid just due to the shear size of data that was going to be stored. Like he said, just poor planning.
@@michaelhanson5773 Why do you start with stuff about Windows I never said? Why do you structure your sentences containing Excel and Access somewhat like they'd be alike? And seriously, why would you want to use something (Excel) as a database that clearly isn't? Because people want to look at it? Give them a proper tool to look at a normal database type. Plenty of tools already existing that can use SQL as interface, for instance.
@@Ksorkrax excel has its place for displaying data for people. Never said it was the best for all situations. Access, like excel, still has its limitations and has its place. A developer should know enough to know when either excel, access, or an actual proper database should be used. If a customer asked me to give them an excel file with 20 columns and maybe 5k rows, i would have no issues with excel. If they asked for 50k rows and data that would be in several sheets and needed to be related or something, i would go with access and a simple viewer for it. If they wanted a system designed for something like storing covid data and feeding an alert system, i would have recommended a proper sql server. Lastly, your last sentence in your first comment said "who in gods name runs servers on windows". The fact is that you can and people do. You can fully install sql server if you want on a windows machine. Not saying that you should or shouldn't, i was just responding to it saying that you can and yes, there are times when i could be considered acceptable as long as licensing was followed. I do agree with you though... If this was an IT person that came up with using excel for that system, they should probably have been fired as it needed a proper server solution.
@@michaelhanson5773 As for the first block, then why are you writing this? Yes, Excel is fine for creating tables, haven't said otherwise. As for the second block, you can totally do so, yes. It just is a bad choice. I thought that me writing "who in god's name" would make it clear that I refer to it being a bad idea rather than impossible or even hard. ...so... you basically agree with me? The thing is, I am trying to figure out what your intention is, overall.
@@Ksorkrax because the way I interpreted your comment was that excel is a complicated format and shouldn't be used for anything relating to data storage or retrieval, not just pertaining to covid database system he talked about.

They didn’t have the games to back it up. Nintendo Fucking kicked their ass when it comes to their library on their handheld systems
I remember begging my mom for a vita and then getting one with uncharted and killzone . It was the most amazing piece of technology I ever owned relative to the year it launched in , it’s a shame they made literally NO games for it . I could swear I would have enjoyed it today if they didn’t literally kill their own console

I would buy those up in minute.
hehe
first thing on my mind was use of this ismell during porn :D
