2018 Chevy Colorado V6 Review & Test Drive | Well Rounded Midsize Truck

  • The 2018 Chevy Colorado V6 is a great option for many truck buyers. In the midsize segment, it tows more than others, has respectable payload, fairly comfortable interior, and impressive MPG with every powertrain combination. The 3.6 V6 is my personal preference due to it's good acceleration. The 2.8 Duramax Diesel is available for those who want more efficiency and torque with 700lbs more towing. This particular model is the LT trim which sits middle of the road just below the Z71 and ZR2. I've reviewed the Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma and found the Colorado completely different than both of those. Each of those trucks tend to market to different buyers, but this Colorado is a good blend of everything small truck buyers are looking for. Enjoy this 2018 Chevrolet Colorado LT review.

    I love the Colorado so much that I bought a 2021 Work Truck. The V6 was so powerful and efficient, that a six hours tow from Phoenix to Vegas with my 4200lbs of trailer and race car now only takes 5.5hrs due to the greater hill climbing ability than my 2004 Colorado with a 3.5L 5cyl engine. I look forward to traveling through more of the country with my extra power and towing capabilities my new Colorado has!😀

    It's called "Cajun Red" because it's the same color as a crawfish shell late in the season after it's boiled. Late in the season, dark red shells are common and indicate harder shells, which are harder to peel.

      We just bought a Colorado LT about amonth ago. I'm wishing I had the extra room of the Silverado, but it wouldn't fit under our car port lol Colorados are nice though. They almost look like a larger truck than they actually are.

    • @JimmyMakingitwork
      @JimmyMakingitwork 5 лет назад

      I ended up going with the Tacoma. Rumor was they don’t make deals on them in 4wd versions, so I went to CFL Toyota a bit irritated after OffLeaseOnly sold a 2018 Silverado 4x4 out from under me, frustrated after months of looking. Got it for $4500 off MSRP, 2018 TRD OffRoad for $34,800 with running boards and window tint added in, no charge. I like something different about each truck, but decided i’d go with the Toyota if they would deal and they did. Happy I tried and didn’t listen to some of the forums about deals.

    At 9600 miles still great truck, the Colorado has changed my mind on Chevy products. Bad news for Ford. Getting 18.2 MPG average while driving around Phoenix. Highway trips it jumps to 24.3 MPG. 3.6 under light throttle goes to v4 mode around town. Love the 8" screen upgrade, along with locking diff on my 2wd. Walked out the dealer on my black LT trim at $32,700. With 0 down and lock in 4% its reasonable monthly payments. The bad of the Colorado are the following, placement of the shifter is located in such a way I hit it with my legs. Another ding are the jump seat are useless and wish they had a cargo storage option over the seat, which I would jump on in a heatbeat. Another minor miss is the sensitivity of the alert system which was included in this truck. Positive note it can be turned off manually. Overall love my Colorado as much as my 2011 Ranger. That's saying lots as I was not a Chevy fan until this truck.

    Best review of the Colorado I’ve seen. Thank you for making this. Question for you. Where did you find a smartphone gimbal where you can still plug in a microphone? My gimbal puts the connection against one of the gimbal motors. If I flip the phone over, the camera is behind the gimbal arm.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! It’s made by Snoppa. It’s the Snoppa M1. Only reason I got this gimbal was for the exact reason you mention. Not great but gets the job done

    • @DougAlesUSA
      @DougAlesUSA 6 лет назад

      Prime Autotainment, thank you for answering my question about the Snoppa M1 gimbal. I have not heard of that brand before. I already own a gimbal but if I had known bout this feature and model I would have went with the one you use so I could plug in a microphone.
      By the way, I’m going to order a Colorado tomorrow through my employer. We have a limited selection of offerings, From GM I think its a Malibu, Equinox, or Colorado. I’m selecting the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT - 4x4 Crew Cab 5 ft. box 128.3 in. WB - (12N43) then adding the towing package, locking differential, and the LT convenience pack (fog lamps, defrost rear window & side mirrors, opening rear window, EZ lift gate, & remote start)
      The video you made helped me make up my mind. Thank you.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад

      It’s possible that you could maybe put a counter weight on the gimbal and slide your phone out enough to fit a microphone...maybe. If it’s not too heavy. You’re welcome though, I got that Snoppa on Amazon if you decide to get it.
      That’s awesome! Good choice with the trim and options too. I think it’s a good value. I’m glad the video was helpful and I appreciate you sharing that with me! 👍

  • @HiPlains1
    @HiPlains1 5 лет назад +1

    I know for 2019 you can order the LT with full leather interior. The storage space on top of dash is where a Bose speaker goes with the upgraded stereo which is also available on LT. With luxury package LT gets projector headlights and power seats with passenger seats. Safety package only available on LT in 19 and now includes back up warning. Also in 2019 steering wheel is heated. This truck just keeps getting better.

      REALLY enjoying my '18 Colorado z71 4wd. Have taken it across the country from northern MN to soCal, then up to snowy Mammoth in the eastern Sierras. The auto 4wd was just right for spotty ice patches, although we snicked it into 4H on constant snow or ice. I'm disappointed they don't offer a manual transmission in the z71 trim. I find it safer to be able to choose a lower gear manually. Oh well. Otherwise all good. Tight, quiet, surprisingly competent. Love this truck!

      Prime Autotainment ....ah ok
      ...I was going on your explanation on the video and the fact that "locking diffs" are not " automatic". Did you mean the limited slip differential is a $325 option? Locking diffs and limited slip diffs are 2 different animals although have a similar purpose. A true locking diff cannot be used on pavement otherwise, you destroy the drivetrain of the vehicle.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад

      nel m I get ya. It actually has an automatic locking rear differential. Can’t remember the RPM or speed range but it actually locks up and disengages at a certain speed. It’s called the G80 Eaton Locking Rear Differential. The Silverado has it too

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад

      nel m after a quick search here’s an article in it: www.google.com/amp/s/www.topspeed.com/trucks/truck-news/deep-dive-general-motors-g80-locking-rear-differential-ar169064.amp.html
      I had an ‘06 Silverado that had it and could actually feel it lockup when on snow or ice. It isn’t that abrupt nowadays but it’s a full on equal torque to both wheels locker. Definitely was awesome when off the pavement. It didn’t ever lockup when I was in dry pavement though

    I can get a Colorado WT with V6 4x4 extended cab/long bed, tow package, spray-in bed liner, foglights, vinyl seats and 7" screen with Apple Carplay & Android Auto, and 16" Ultra Silver metallic cast aluminum wheels (Kinetic Blue +$325 color option). ($33,295)
    Ford Ranger XL - 4x4, vinyl seats, supercab/long bed, tow package, drop in bed-liner, Sync, 16" steel wheels (no CarPlay or Foglights) - $32,540
    Difference: $755 (If I remove the Foglights and the Kinetic Blue color options off the Colorado, there is no price difference, plus I would be getting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But, my area gets foggy a lot, so I want fog lights, which is NOT an option or available on a Ranger XL, and I reallllllly like blue color vehicles.
    I don't want to jump up 10K for easy to clean leather seats, and cloth seats are hard to clean, stain, and get stinky. Also, count me out on 18+ inch wheels on a pick up - I want some sidewall and tire.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад +1

      I like the pricing you got there! That kinetic blue does look pretty cool too, and good idea going with thicker tires...low profile tires would kind of scare me going off road.

    • @godwhomismike
      @godwhomismike 6 лет назад +1

      Thinking of Off-roading, I would have the 16" Ultra Silver metallic cast aluminum wheels on the Colorado powder coated black, which is the same as what they do on the Black Edition, and have a set of Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires installed. While I am not doing much off-roading, there are plenty of local dirt and gravel roads, roads that have not been taken care of in a few decades, and plenty of snow and ice. To get those wheels and tires on a Z71, it's a $3500 accessory option (only an option for the Z71). DIY is under $1000.

      The ZR2 has it, but not this one. I’m pretty sure the LT Z71 doesn’t either

    You seem a little nervous. You need to slow down a little when your talking. They need to keep their motors and stop with all the changing. Pick a six cylinder and stick with it. Just make improvements to the motors they have instead of changing. Bring back the 305 and the 350! One of the reasons I chose the Tacoma over the Chevy was sight. I can see out of the Tacoma a lot better. The Chevy is much harder to see out of looking back and to the sides. Chevy needs to work on that. Too many blind spots. Give me a Colorado that has some off road ability without a darn $49,000 price tag! Do like Toyota and offer me one for around 35 or 34.

      Thanks for the feedback, Tom! I agree with you on the motors..and the Tacoma offering off road capability at lower prices is great. Thanks for watching!

      The 49k Colorado Zr2 blows the TRD Offroad out of the water, the best in the segment is going to cost some money man.

      @@JohnBrowningsGhost First Tacoma outsells Chevy and GMC mid-size trucks by more than 2 to 1! So overall, the majority of Americans agree with me. "blows it out of the water" that something a young teen says. Not worth the response. Most Americans also agree with me that the truck is too expensive. 67% of Americans agree with me. Now they are letting around 14,000 employees go and closing three plants. This is after the taxpayers bailed them out. Even worse, they have yet to pay back 11 billion dollars loaned to them with taxpayer money! Their reputation just isn't what it used to be. Their mid-size truck has been canceled twice so far due to poor sales.

      That’s the class, it’s still quite a bit smaller in every aspect, exterior, front/backseats, cargo bed...
