    This was my first YT upload ever. Check out my channel for more detailed looks at this PC build, and my upgrade installations. I'm constantly working on improving, and I work hard to try and put on something worth watching... Although this video isn't very well put together, of course. I'm learning, and I'm slowly getting more comfortable speaking in front of a camera. It's very awkward 🤣. For me at least. I brainstorm every minute of the day to try and come up with something funny or interesting. Please toss out some ideas, if you have any. I really appreciate you all.

      @@PDYALL Oh yeah, runs excellent! Only change is, I upgraded the GPU to an RTX 3070. Rips through all AAA titles with excellent frame rates at 1440p. I'm still loving this 10700K. I do plan to upgrade to intel Rocket Lake 11th Gen as soon as it's available. This will open up the Z490's PCIe Gen 4 capability. 10th Gen intel doesn't support PCIe Gen 4, but most Z490 MB are Gen 4 ready.

      Nice yea I was torn between the 9900k that was on sale for $299 or the 10700k and the guy at microcenter said if I bought the 10700k the chipset is good for the next new cpu and he price matched the 10700k to the 9900k for me. And I almost got the 3070 but I needed a power supply so I settled for the 3060ti with a new 750watt power supply can’t wait to try out the new combo

    Thanks for this. This was the first OC guide I saw and used as soon as I got my 10700K around a month ago. Everything seems great so far. My R15 score is around the same as yours but my max temps went up to 84C on a couple of the cores, which is not a big deal because it's being cooled by a 280mm AIO liquid cooler so 84C being the max under stress test is fine by me. I did however choose "fixed mode" over "Dynamic" just to have all cores on 5.1Ghz. Maybe that's why my temps were a bit higher

    to anyone wondering, msi mpg bios are pretty damn smart so u don't even need to change any of the voltages or speeds other than the cpu multiplier, I just typed 51 and it adjusted all the settings automatically so I left everything else on auto, just make sure u got the extra 4 pin cpu power plugged in

    • @TheSmileyTek
      @TheSmileyTek  4 года назад

      Yes, you can leave Vcore on Auto, but I wouldn't recommend it. Locking down the voltage gives the user better control of what's going on. You can also dial in an undervolted OC, to control temps and what not. Running an OC in Auto is also a good starting point, to see what the MB allows under certain loads, then one can go down from there. To each their own though. Cheers

      So you're suggesting to connect the 8 pin power as well as the 4 pin CPU power??

    • @Magicmushroomboi
      @Magicmushroomboi 4 года назад +1

      Moozi well if your gonna overclock then you kinda need to. 8pin cpu connector provides in the range of 150-225w to the cpu, 10700k takes up around 150-200w under load on stock speeds. however if u overclock it it could consume upwards of 300w meaning u won’t have a stable overclock without the extra 4pin cpu connector.
      Cpu connectors are nearly the same as pcie connectors, it’s fair to say that u wouldn’t leave an extra 4 pin on your gpu unpopulated even though ur gpu would most likely run fine without it, so it’s generally just recommended to populate all power connectors available to insure stability

      HALKBR I have a Corsair rm750x which is the same one as u just the modular version. Yours would run the cpu perfectly fine on just the 8pin if u run on stock speeds. A light over clock might also not cause any trouble but pushing it anywhere above 5ghz is likely to cause instabilities (I initially ran mine with just the 8pin and tried over locking and at 5.1ghz cinebench stress test caused the pc to crash, plugging in the extra 4 pin allowed me to be stable at 5.2ghz)

    Thank you so much for this video! It`s great! I have the same setup as you (mobo and cpu), but an Corsair H100i platinum Cooler (pump on quiet mode). I followed your settings, but I run with hyperthreading off (for now) and I`m getting pretty good results. I have testet with Prime95, AIDA 64, Cinebench R20 and CPU stress test on 3D mark. Currently overclocked to 5Ghz and 1.280 Volts. Highest temp (as expected) I got was with with Prime 95/small FFT`s: 90 Degrees. On AIDA 64 (full stress withouth GPU and disks) I get 78 degrees after 10 mins. Cinebench R20: 77 degrees. CPU test in 3D Mark: 60 degrees. So to my "issue"; I`ve testet from 1.33 volts and run several test, and then stepped down to my current 1.280 volts. More ore less the same temps I got at 1.290 volts. So should I keep going to crash/blue screen and hope for even better temps, or should I just be happy with these results? I will do aa several hrs AIDA-stress test in the end though :) Also mention that I use this PC for VR simulators mainly, so maybe Prime95 isn`t relevant to stresstest with :/ -Again, thanks for amazing tutorials! Helped me alot!

      Gotcha.. It's trial and error when OCing.. Each chip is unique. Make sure Game Boost is off before trying these settings (of course). I got lucky with my 10700K, it is super easy to OC, with some decent settings. BTW, I had intermittent crashes when I used Game Boost myself. My kid has my 10700K now, and I upgraded to 11th gen when they came out. It's not as good as an OCer. I run my 11700K at 1.41V lol. As long as I just game on it, I'm not worried about being at 1.4v. Miss my 10700K lol. You'll get it dialed in eventually.

      Try giving it more voltage, staying below 1.4v if you can. You can also try a lower Ring Frequency, and different LLC modes to see what happens. So many little toggles in there. I also swapped out my MSI MB for an Aorus. That was a mistake as well. I really liked the MSI BIOS.

      Using these settings, vcore seems to stay pretty steady, right around where it's set. I would assume that changing the LLC mode and/or setting voltage to auto might affect the voltages at idle, but you lose Vcore override with Auto. I run 5.0Ghz all core "dynamic" at 1.325V LLC mode 3 these days. The frequency fluctuates, but not the vcore (really). Change the Load Line Calibration mode, and see if that goes in the right direction.

      Hmm. Not familiar with that cooler, but it looks pretty beefy. Give it a try. The CPU will protect itself and throttle if it hits 100C. I was hitting 95C with a smaller Cooler Master EVO Black in Cinebench R20 @ 5Ghz tbh. It's safe to try it out. It's all about voltage. The lower you can go on voltages with your OC, the better temps you'll get, but it may not be stable. You probably know that, but you just gotta find the sweet spot. Try 1.3v and work up by .005 if it crashes under stress.

      If it's a 10700k, these settings should be perfectly fine. You can probably even drop the voltage a little. Just be sure to double check your settings, leave the thermal protections enabled (as I did), and have a proper cooling solution. I would recommend a 240mm aio, or maybe even Noctua's larger air cooler minimum. The CPU will protect itself and throttle if it hits 100°C. You can also set an AVX offset of -5 or so to be sure the clocks drop if the CPU is hit with AVX instruction. I totally forgot to mention that. I didn't set an offset. I'm confident in my 360mm Kraken's ability to cool the CPU adequately. I will be posting a video on my cooler this weekend. Subscribe if you'd like so you can see how I keep it nice and cool.

      I have intel optane memory in one of my M.2 slots which is paired with my mechanical hard drive. It gives it a little boost by acting as a cache for the drive. The read speeds are closer to SSD performance on programs I use often. Optane "learns" which files are used often, and holds them in "memory" for the drive, so to speak. I disable it with Intel Rapid Storage to avoid any issues if I crash, and have to reset CMOS. From what I've read, you always want to unpair Optane before resetting the "Raid/Optane" switch in the BIOS. Clearing CMOS may set my BIOS to default which may turn off "Optane Genie". In theory it could cause issues with the drive. It's just a hard drive full of games, but it would take hours to re-download them. They're huge these days 🤣. Modern Warfare is over 200GB. That's nuts!

    What would you say are the "danger zone" temps with this cpu ?

    • @TheSmileyTek
      @TheSmileyTek  3 года назад

      I'd say sustained 80s and above too often, would chip away at it a little faster. Although 100C tjmax is when it starts throttling, and that's per Intel specifications. I'd be ok with some 70s here and there, and low 80s at heavy load for short bursts. My target for gaming, I'm ok with 66ish spikes with low and high 50s sustained on the CPU. But, if you upgrade often, you may not even notice stability issues or degradation during short lived ownership, running at high temps. The CPU will protect itself if temperature protections aren't turned off. This is all just my opinion. The lower your temps (not counting LN2 or extreme OCing), the more stable and faster your silicon hardware will run. With my GPU, I go aggressive on the fan curve to keep my max temps around 70C sustained during heavy gaming. Not easy with a 3070FE, with stock cooling and an OC, but clock speeds stay where they're set until I hit about 74C. At that temp clocks drop a little on my GPU.

      @Daniel Mora No worries. Your CPU will protect itself from damage. Worst case, your PC just reboots if it doesn't like the settings or it gets too hot. Don't worry though. Z490 is made for this stuff. If you set the ratio to 4.4 "dynamic" the cpu frequency will drop down when idling and rise to 4.4 under load. If you set to "fixed" it will stay where you set the core ratio. 4.4 in this case. Also, you can search "power management" settings in Windows. Balanced will allow fluctuations in frequency (along with other power functions), and "performance" will keep everything perked up and probably minimize response times ever so slightly. It's all about temperatures. Maintaining reasonable temps, 20C to 75C in my opinion, is the key to longevity. But, running this CPU at 5Ghz probably won't have any negative affect until the CPU is years old. You'll probably upgrade before that ever happens. I was nervous my first time too. This stuff isn't cheap, but I learned that it will let you know if you go too far. You just boot back up, back off a little, and you're back in action no problem. You got this. Just have fun playing with your toys. 😁

    • @TheSmileyTek

      I think it would be fine. It's a 12 +1 +1 phase 60 amp VRM power delivery system. I'd recommend the MEG Unify as a 10900k minimum, but I know this board would handle it just fine. I can go 5.2Ghz, and probably 5.3 with the 10700k. The VRMs only went into the 60C range when I ran Prime95 smallest ffts (a power virus).

      They look pretty close to me, as far as the 12+1+1 phase power delivery system. I haven't noticed any obvious differences in my short time looking at the MAG lineup. I was looking for integrated WiFi just in case I ever needed it, but of course you can add a WiFi card for that. MPG (Performance Gaming) line. MAG (Functionality) line. Per MSI, the MPG lineup is slightly above the MAG lineup, with MEG at the top "best overclocking" board. Technically, MSI considers the MPG to be above the MAG. Hope that helps.

    Where can I find heat temps

  • @-Ncrypt
    @-Ncrypt 3 года назад

    Those are not true temps, and this can be dangerous. The proper way to run temp tests is to run them for at least an hour continuously, preferably few hours. This gives the cpu a chance to heat up over time (notice how the longer you ran it, the hotter the temps got). Since a few Cinebench R20 tests got your cpu up to 80°C, I would say after an hour you'd be very close to 90°C, too high for my comfort. Try lowering the voltage by .05v, then test again for an hour. If stable, lower by another .05v, test again. When it gets unstable and starts to fail, go up by .01v until it doesn't fail, and you will have found the lowest possible voltage for your chip. Lower voltage = lower temps 😉

    • @TheSmileyTek
      @TheSmileyTek  3 года назад +1

      Those are true temps for an R20 run. Nothing dangerous shown in this video. Pretty standard. R20 runs AVX, so a spike in temps is normal. Nothing I run daily loads the CPU like R20 does. An 80C spike running AVX is normal as well (with an OC in my case). An AVX offset is all that's really needed if one doesn't feel comfortable with the spike caused by AVX. I ended up settling at 5.0Ghz, 1.320V, LLC 3 for daily use. I'm starting to realize I got pretty lucky with this silicon. Thanks for your input. Sounds like you're having as much fun as I am playing with our toys. I spent hours, over a few days running the proper stress tests getting to the settings I currently use. While gaming, my temps run between 45-65. That's perfect for me. What LLC Vcore and ratio does your CPU run best at?

    • @-Ncrypt
      @-Ncrypt 3 года назад

      @@TheSmileyTek I've been considering OCing my chip but haven't tried it yet, have been trying to see what results people are getting before I give it a shot. 65°C during gaming is great though, I'd be comfortable with that. You're right that Cinebench is a different type of load and heavier than gaming, I'm used to doing prime95 for 8hrs for a full time long term OC stability check, but that's how I learned about a dozen years ago lol. Some games give heavier loads than others, so if my cpu can handle hours of prime95 then I know no game will give me any issue. You'd also be surprised how many times an OC fails after an hour or two of testing, so with 8 hours it makes me feel comfortable enough knowing it's stable as can be. Everyone clocks differently tho hehe, like they say it's an art, not a science, at the end of the day there are different needs for different users and use cases, so everyone had their own way of clocking 🙂

      🤔 I have noticed that I got pretty lucky with my chip. It seems to be able to run at a little bit lower voltages than some others. Have you tried bumping up the voltage a little? Start at 1.4v and work your way down. When it crashes, bump it up 0.005 and test it out. Try to stay below 1.4v if you can, but going over a little won't hurt anything, as long as your temps are ok.
