- See e or www.myturbodies... or www.myturbodies... for more details on how to change the fuel filter. Please note that early mk5 and later mk5-mk6 engines are slightly different so the notes are different.
Another great tutorial; replaced the filter right after cleaning the injectors. Followed both of your videos to get the jobs done.
I lube the seals with fuel during install, too. fuel-soaked rag wipe the new seals. Never had a problem. I don't put the fuel back in the tank. It's good fire starter for the trash burn barrel! :)
I never had removed the cannister on my 06 ... but seeing the "sludge" drain from yours I may do that ... I do run bioDiesel quite frequently so hopefully that's reducing the amount of this contamination. I'll check at my next service which I do every 10K with an IDI kit for my BRM engine ... engine oil, fuel, cold air intake, and cabin air filters. Every 10K miles.
arrived here ISO a good how to video to show my kid who is getting this car. Thanks. well done.
Great video, really helpful and the cat sticking it's head in really adds something special!
Thanks for the video. Your instructions are great for doing a very clean job with no spills.
I've never changed my fuel filter before, I've had this car for about 8 years now. Had really hard time pulling old (made in chekoslovakia) filter out, ended up dislodging and pulling out the tube in the middle. To reinstall the new one, it was going hard as well, new gaskets around the filter opening were really tight. Also was hard to put the lid back, with new o ring...had to push in down in place by tightening the screws, one at a time, little by little. Will try to replace this filter more often now. Also cleaned EGR valve.
i have 06 tdi with 170k miles never change fuel filter before i know i should but hate to spent 50 bucks for filter + labor now i will do because free video ,thanks a lot
I had a 1989 Golf diesel and a 92 jetta diesel. On both of those car I found a drain valve on the bottom of the fuel tank so any water could be drained off. Water is heavier than fuel and it goes to the bottom of the tank.
Thanks for the video. I loved it.
Very good! I like your assistant! She was curious what are you doing there without her!
Great vid! Still current in my case as I drive an older model; kudos for the cat too!! Looks like he takes his job seriously! :D
Thank you. A nice clear video. Helped me along my filter change
Did this today and this video was super helpful. Thanks!
Awesome demo. Nice Clear narration.
Curious of the priming part. not sure why that is particularly needed. I'd simply leave the diesel in there, and place the new filter in it. perhaps not a VW recommended option, yet not sure how there could be any adverse effect. thoughts on that??
you should drain all the crap whenever you replace any diesel fuel filter...most have drains on the bottom for this...this car doesn't...
at any rate, you need to prime it(as in get the housing full of fuel) before starting, so you don't run the injectors dry, and then need to re prime them...which would take a while longer than three turns of the key
The high pressure fuel pump on the engine doesn't like to run dry and can fail.
YES. You have the other style of fuel filter, see my website linked in the video description for details on that style.

Does anyone have the part number for the 10mm nut he removes at 3:46 I dropped mine and cannot locate it LOL - great video and greatly appreciated?
So how do you manually prime the lines on an 09+ if you don't have vcds?
Another good video Chitty, the forum has gone crap since you sold it, the TDI Wiki link doesn't work now
Love the cat, OMG! That is so hilarious!! Thanks for the video. I will use this info on my TDI.
I DO MINE EVRY 1OK TO MAKE SURE MY CAR STAY HEALTHY, AND OIL
I have a 2007 will turning the key prime the pump/filter for this model or will I need the program tool?
Thank you; very helpful. I take it the cat is the foreman?
What is the name of the black part in the filter housing? My dad gave me his 2006 Mk5 tdi and said he broke the spring in the bottom when he last changed the fuel filter. What symptoms would this cause? Would it cause the CEL to come on and the engine to run rough, almost like it went into limp mode? Sometimes after the rpm's finally get up it will go but other times it will hardly move and smokes alot.
Why the fuel filter is black? It is contaminated with oil or samthing else? It is normal the black color in that filter? Thanks
I think I didn't put enough diesel in fuel filter tank and got the air in my fuel system now... despite the fact that I let fuel pump to work couple of times with turning ignition ON before starting. It started and after couple of seconds stopped. Now and my car isn't starting. Any tips how to fix it?
I have the same issue did you fix this
@@Boomboompowwow tow-start
@@Boomboompowwow i dont know if u have managed to fix it but if u can get the engine to start with the easy start spray. U gotta rev the engine to around 3000rpm to get the air out of the system.
I had this problem earlier today and it caused the car to shake after starting up and eventually not start at all until i did that.
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing/new filter do you pour them nothing right over the middle?
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing/new filter do you pour them nothing right over the middle
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing new filter do you pour them both right over the middle
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing new filter do you pour them nothing right over the middle
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing & new filter do you pour them right over the middle
@JGarth_ wish i knew this before
For cleaning; HOW do you take out the center part of the housing?? thanks, take care - Leeroy
In a petrol you have relieve fuel system pressure--Is this not the case with a diesel?
Is diesel Purge necessary? Other videos seem to skip that step. Thx.
The last time I changed my fuel filter it was extremely hard to get the filter out, i pryed it out with a screwdriver but the part in the middle of the filter that shouldn't come out, did, I put it back together and put in a new filter, my car started up fine afterwards but now my car air locks every morning if I don't rev it up when I start it, any idea what I did wrong?
check blue gasket on middle of the filter, you may have not set it right. Also the notch that the middle plastic has that goes in the top metal part.
Excellent. Thank you for posting.
This is also correct for the 2006 VW golf tdi 1.9 liter hatchback. I hope nobody else bought the wrong filter like I did.
i did, as the seller sugested that the other one was the right one. had to swap it afterwards.
also 1.9 tdi golf plus. What is that small o-ring for, usually in the picture? Didnt see him using it
Thank you so much for this upload
Great, informative video...cool cat!
The black thing you saw in the bottom might just as well be engine oil which enters the return line by the vacuum pump.
The have a weakness for leaking oil into the fuel and its colours the fuel totally black on the way back toi the fuel tank :-/
Why do recommend putting the old fuel back into the tank? Sorry if you have answered already. Jon :)
I do that too. I guess it reduces wastefulness, and I don't have to worry about it being a little dirty, because anything that goes back in to the tank with it will be filtered out by the new filter anyways. Just my thoughts, though.
I appreciate the video...my fuel filter came with a small silver grommet thing...where was that to go?
Bleeder screw
how much diesel do zou put in the houseing to not overfill it?
great video! Unfortunately I didn't see your video until I damaged the center part while trying to remove my old filter. 2 of the 4 tabs on the bottom that clip into the metal housing broke. I can't find that part number online anywhere. Do you know where I can get a replacement?
GREAT JOB AND THANKS
I have qaeustion my golf 5 tdi start not good long start how is that ?
Hi, i have a O seal sort of ring that goes in the centre, it came with the replacement filter do i HAVE to replace that aswell? is it important?? thanks
The cat should have had a larger role.

Exactly thanks for ur video's 👍
Do you have to use the diesel purge when replaceing fuel filter??
hello
Great video, i cant remove my filter, but in these video i see you force it with a screw... i hope i can remove it.
Thanks
What liquid did you put in at the end clear jar??
Nice video, but I would never dump the fuel that is in the fuel filter housing back into the tank.

Vw polo 2005 oil fliter
Cute kitty!
cool cat
The Volkswagen Dealership has told me that all they do is take out the filter and put a new one in. They don't even use a computer to prime it, they burn the starter up.
they don't care.
Called "make work"
Rookies
While the video appears to be great, especially with the positive comments, I have to offer this comment. The audio on this video is terrible. The volume is loud enough to hear but your voice is so fuzzy, the words are indistinguishable. It's like you are mumbeling or spiting into the microphone. I can't understand a word. Hope others can hear better. Maybe its my computer but other youtube vids are fine.
Tom Kearns must your your ears or speakers dude. I Could hear him nice and clear.
Sound good to me lol
Bad video, you pop something off, you doesn't let see what popped off,or later what you put or popped back on.
rubbish vw filter design..fact
Agree. Should of stick to the old design (pre MK5) where you change the complete housing. But this is the new trend that all manufacturers follow.
furry apprentice.
when you pour the diesel purge and then the diesel fuel into the housing/new filter do you pour them nothing right over the middle?
