Leaving the outgoing hose off whilst filling the new filter is essential advice. I also filled that hose up with fuel before pushing it on to the spigot - started first time - runs so much better now!!
Just did this yesterday on my ALH. Get you some clamps/vicegrips and squeeze off the fuel lines, dont have to worry about priming or air bubbles. I usually run diesel purge directly from the can too. Also lol @ 9:07
Love it. I thought you might be UK due to your excellent language skills 👌. Good talk through. I'm about to do this. I was wondering where the priming was lol. Yours has done the same milage as mine
Lol, at the people busting on you for priming the filter with old fuel... it would be a pretty odd design for that fuel not to get run back through the filter anyway. And even if it does... these cars run long enough a little dirt in the fuel won't be what takes it off the road. I have to redo my fuel filter. I think it's been over 35k miles. She's at 379k.
Soon I will buy a golf tdi with this engine and your videos are very useful to me !!! Every how many kms should this filter be changed? Greetings from Argentina!
I hope you can answer this question I have, my 2006 tdi has a long crank start in warm conditions and I’m hoping that replacing my fuel filter will fix that issue, thanks
Hi! What will happen if the yellow and black lines switch places on the diesel filter? (They are put correctly on the pump, my mechanic just switched their places on the filter). Please reply it’s kinda urgent..
@@gregs_garageswitched em back but now i have air in the lines.. i can see air bubbles in the yellow line.. i also did loosen the injectors to bring the air out.. but it’s still having air in it.. please reply what to do?
@@mallikarjunreddy4974 yeah I often see air in the lines also. I think if it runs just run it! the air is minimal or it may eventually move out. Not that critical.
Filtrul trebuia sa fie umplut cu diesel inainte de a-l monta, nu cand sunt yoate furtunele montate. Si nu era greu sa pui diesel curat, dintr-un flacon. Nu e mai bine sa introduci diesel prin teava de input?
Ive done it twice and the first time I didn’t even think about. And i noticed air bubbles passing through that transparent hose, then second time Fuel filter change i did fill it up with fuel this time, and still see bubbles, did it messed it Up?

I love how these TDI's start right up, the starter turns over once and the car starts.
The names you called that clamp were classic!
I don’t remember but I’m sure it was a batch
Being new to TDI's your video just saved me a ton of headache. Thanks!!!!
You sounded just like me when I’m wrenching away. That’s why the kids have to stay in the house. 😂

Thanks. I think you still need to fill the new filter.
Thank you, good video. And I use the same method you described to fill my fuel filter, use the vacuum pump to suck fuel into the filter.
Thanks for this video - very helpful. Doing this to my old Mk 4 Golf tomorrow - hasn't been changed for 9 years!
9 years! Not good

The PROcess makes me think Canadian.
I always fill the new filter with Diesel Purge to give it a little cleaning with the filter change.
Yes I do that too. injectors get a quick blast then most of it goes back to the tank to continue to clean later
Very nice good skill and useful tips i use to service my golf myself

the fuel in the old filter isn't dirty anyway. The filter may be getting plugged over time but it isn't "dirty". It's a clean sealed fuel tank.

Greetings from Argentina!
I think every 30-40,000 kms is when I do it. They do get clogged over time.
Thx for the video, i almost did the same mistake..😉😄
Thanks for the video.
I am gonna do this on my wife's jetta mk4 ALH. Should be same on mk4 BEW right?
Bew is similar
thanks for good work ,How can we tell if the valve called thermostatic tee is broken?
yeah they are usually pretty reliable. Not sure how to test. Replace if suspect, they aren't too much $
Thanks for the great video. Glad there were no kids around. Hahahaha.

Yea start there it needs to be replaced regardless. Could be glow plugs also. Change both.

it may work. I don't know. switch them back

mine started right up. then died. then was a pita to start again but running smooth since.
Did you fill the filter fully?
@@gregs_garage yeah full of fresh diesel.
Thanks for the vid
I got 2 black rubbers instead like you got the black and blue, do those color rubbers make any difference?
I don’t think so. Same size.
What if you don’t fill the filter with diesel can you prime it and will it pull fuel? Or will you put air in the system?
It will take a while. They don’t suck fuel and air very well.
What clearhose are you using from filter to pump? Mineare due for replacement would like to use clear. Thanks
That’s a factory original formed hose. 2003 model

You need to let the air out somewhere
That's what I call those clips too.
Nozzle swap?
the nozzle swap is coming soon. I hope. They are on the workbench...
Wrong.dont put the diesel from the old filter in the new filter. Dirty diesel you put in there
the diesel is not dirty.
He was pouring it from the clean side of the filter, so honestly probably cleaner than from a fuel can.
Contaminants would have been trapped in the filter media.
I do a 50/50 mix
Prime that pls
Greg love you but why say process like that. .. lol jk thanks you r a huge help.
I don’t know how I say it or what is proper. May be regional
Please don't put the dirty fuel out of the old filter into the new one not good practice
Why would it be dirty?
Ive done it twice and the first time I didn’t even think about. And i noticed air bubbles passing through that transparent hose, then second time
Fuel filter change i did fill it up with fuel this time, and still see bubbles, did it messed it
Up?
There’s always some bubbles. As long as it runs you are fine
Doesn’t it needs have bleed the air first before start it? Like prime the fuel filter?
no just fill the filter is enough. A little air will get bled out as it runs.
