  • Why does Enema of the State hold such a special place in so many people's hearts? With the release of "One More Time", it's the perfect moment to look back at THE pop-punk album of all time. The album the inspired a whole generation of bands. An album the might never be topped.
    Yes, it doesn't get better than enema of the state by Blink-182.
    Blink-182 is Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge, and Travis Barker.

    The album is a product of its time. The right group of dudes, at the right moment in their lives, writing the right kind of music at the right time in the world. Honestly those 3 albums are seriously perfection. Enema, jacket, and untitled are albums you listen to start to finish.

    • @dankiwi01

      Emena and untitled are start to finish albums to me, I skip a couple on jacket but funnily enough if I had to pick a favourite song from the three it would probably be Anthem part 2.

      As an album, the reason Enema succeeds is because it is perfectly blended. The melodies are somewhat similar to Dude Ranch, and the songs are not as Technical as TOYPAJ. No joke songs on the album is kind of its advantage. Makes it more appealing, cause their toilet humour isn't for everyone.
      So for most people, it's that wholesome Sunny vibe from start to finish.
      While TOYPAJ and Self-titled are great albums, they don't have a wider appeal.
      while the former is a bit on the nose, the latter is definitely more focussed, technical, and serious.
      Just like you said, It was "The right group of dudes, at the right moment in their lives, writing the right kind of music at the right time in the world"

      I relistened to both Enema and TOYPAJ a bunch lately as well and what I found is that there’s better Tom songs on Enema and better Mark songs on Jacket. Both are great but Enema is the better album for me because Tom at his best is Blink at their best.

    Blink (at least the version with Tom) are interesting, because they evolved with each consecutive album. I know it's an oversimplification, but it becomes quite apparent when you compare them to Green Day who for 10 years, up to the release of "American Idiot", more or less recreated a lesser version of "Dookie" with each of their releases. I absolutely love 90s Blink. At first they were raw and leaned more towards skatepunk on "Cheschire Cat", then found a middle ground between skate and pop on "Dude Ranch", before going almost fully over to the dark side on "Enema". For me, late 90s were Blink's golden years - I must have watched videos of that Big Day out concert hundreds of times. Their self-titled/untitled record is probably my least favourite, because it completely abandons their roots and is more of a rock than punk album, but it I guess it makes sense, given where they were with their lives and careers.

    • @cxssetteman182
      @cxssetteman182 7 месяцев назад +1

      The problem with Green Day is that they have a very distinct sound. But they find it hard to evolve that sound. So they either end up making another American Idiot kinda sounding songs, or something absolutely underwhelming and strange.
      21st Century Breakdown was the last Green Day album, they turned into Mid Day after that.

    As the biggest Green Day fan ever, I have to give it to Blink saying Enema is the biggest pop punk album, even over dookie. You just have to give it to them. It has huge bubble gum charm whole way through.

    • @K3mori
      @K3mori 8 месяцев назад +6

      You would probably be correct in saying that Enema is the bigger of the two. But you really can’t discount Dookie; Dookie walked so that Enema could run. Between the two I prefer Dookie but even to me, it’s clear that Enema is definitely Blinks best work

    • @sidvicious332
      @sidvicious332 8 месяцев назад

      No. You didn't read the words I wrote. I said Enema is the biggest pop punk album of all time. It just is by definition of pop punk. Dookie is way more rock than pop. That's not an opinion, that's just what it is. Again, I say this loving Green Day more, Enema is just more pop punk, so therefore, it's the bigger pop punk album.

    • @K3mori
      @K3mori 8 месяцев назад

      @@sidvicious332 I agreed with you? You’re correct about Enema being more pop than Dookie because there’s nothing punk about Blink. Dookie, whether you like it or not, is a punk album. So yes, once again, Enema was the bigger Pop-punk album while Dookie was a bigger and better album on the whole

Also while it’s not super noticeable, on Going Away To College, Tom sings ‘I haven’t been this scared!’, ‘and I’m so unprepared’, ‘boutique of clumsy words’… basically the first half of each line of the chorus, listen closely to the pronunciation 👍 love the passion for Enema. travis got self indulgent on the new album and sadly created something that sounds like every post pop punk album from recent years (MGK etc..). over produced...high side chaining on the drums completely killing the classic raw percussive sound of blink we all know and love so much. Not to mention Tom not really tapping into the nostalgic melancholy melodies he shares across blink and AVA which would of been awesome to hear more of.

    I can't personally think of another band or artist that has three albums tied for their peak.
    Each Album getting progressively darker and more mature, which solved a lot of issues with people who couldn't get into Blink.
    But also means that progressively they moved away from the sound that put them on the map and that alienated some viewers who preferred their happy no fucks given style.
    It's honestly really hard to compare the three albums. Be honest with yourself and imagine that Tom and Mark weren't singing, I guess unless you really listen to the drums you would never guess that the three albums were made by the same band. Especially considering the time frame in which they wrote them.
    Personally I think their best is self titled, but my favorite to listen to is TOYPAJ.

    I genuinely can’t believe some of the disregard Enema is getting in these comments. Ranking Untitled and even One More Time above it?! Truly insane takes.
    People… Enema is quite simply the perfect distillation of Blink, and the logical extension of Dude Ranch - end of discussion.
    But I’ll continue anyway. As pointed out in the video, with the exception of All the Small Things this album is basically wall-to-wall, non-stop, pop-punk perfection. The melodies and harmonies, the pacing and production etc - it simply cannot be topped by anything else in their discography.
    My two cents on the others, for comparison:
    Dude Ranch is next in line, easily - it’s them at their core and I love pretty much every tune, really great skatepunk but it’s just a bit more one dimensional and obviously lacks the Jerry Finn magic.
    Next is a toss-up between TOYPAJ and Untitled… TOYPAJ is more consistent but has only a few real highlights that stand the test of time (for me Anthem Part Two, Every Time I Look For You, Rollercoaster) and the singles are quite weak (though Rock Show is ok). Untitled probably has higher highs and some really interesting peaks (for me Feeling This, Violence, All of This, Here’s Your Letter), but basically is more filler and creatively all over the place (also a little cringeworthy at times) - they were riding the emo wave and trying way too hard to be taken seriously.
    As for the rest of the albums since then? I don’t care - there’s a handful of decent tunes amongst them, but not one album has stuck the landing.

    TOYPAJ did everything Enema did but bigger and better, but it’s -not- Enema. They tapped into a Zeitgeist on Enema. A lot of people forget Untitled was not well-received by fans at first. Even if it’s looked back upon fondly and some fans erroneously claim it’s their best album. They killed one of their best attributes on Untitled - their humor. They were preoccupied with being taken “seriously” as artists. The joke songs on OMT are more of a caricature of their old selves. Anyway. They owe everything to Enema, Jerry Finn and the magic of late 90s MTV culture.

    If the album ended with All the Small Things, it would be a 12/10 album both song and flow wise. But the D-side, the last four songs of the album always felt so unnecessary to me.

    The List of My Favorite blink-182 albums in order:
    1. Take off your Pants and Jacket 10/10
    2. Neighborhoods 9.5/10
    3. Enema of the State 9/10
    4. One More Time 8.5/10
    5. Self-titled 8/10
    I didn't list the other albums because I need to listen to them more for me to give an actual opinion. I do like California, Nine, and Dude Ranch for the songs I know but need more of a listen. Buddha andCheshire Cat are fine but not my main taste in music.

      Dude Ranch is an excellent record man. Only one song I’m not a huge fan of but I still don’t hate it. Let me know what you think.

    Its funny cuz "All the Small Things" is my least favorite on the album. "Mutt" or "Anthem" are my favorites and no one ever mentions those songs as much. But great album overral obviously.

      All the small things was picked as a single because it’s basically a pop song not bc it’s the best that’s for sure

    It's a great and iconic album. But there are a few tracks on it that are kinda forgettable.

      @@PopPunkApologist all good. My band looked into Rob as a producer for our record. We decided with Cameron Webb. Cameron is amazing. Do a video on him. He’s produced Motörhead, nofx, strung out. And even has a Grammy for Kelly Clarkson. Really good friends with Lemmy before he passed. He’s an old friend that I miss dearly.

      Not lemmy. But Cameron. We record at his studio occasionally.

    Marks songwriting is just so so so terrible, Toms shown he can pump some decent songs with AVA, but Marks lyricism is somehow more immature now than it was in their big 3 albums in the 90s
    Even their uwu soft sad cancer songs sound like theyre written by a 7th grade music student its always the most obvious rhyme possible
