It’s really interesting to be on the other side of the fence when it comes to localizations/translations. Usually I’ll see something translated into English that has various small and large changes that can potentially ruin the original vision and cause all kinds of misconceptions because the people doing the translation didn’t understand the cultural context behind something, they translated something literally (like that version), they don’t use the right phrase, and various other things. It’s good to know that this turned well for the most part. It would be interesting to see how the various expansions and sequels were translated.

Yea I was expecting a disaster but it turned out decent.
Nowadays, a lot of translator prefer to use an oblique way of translating, so they reformulate sentences to adapt the oroginal text to the target language culture but its an endeavour that sometimes can lead to catastrophic result.
"literal translation" instead is a bit safer, but in HL1 it works well because there are a lpt of scientific and burocratic terms, and not too many complicated dialogues

Now I’m think about this really weird game Civvie 11 played called Vivisector Beast Within. Originally it started out as Duke Nukem Endangered Species but during development it become its own thing. It’s very loosely to the Island of Dr Moreau where some guy is experimenting on animals creating all these weird mutants. You can tell the game is trying to be intellectually and bring up some deep physical concepts/ideas. But due to a bad translation the story is almost incomprehensible and there’s a lot of really weird dialogue. It’s so funny! The game also looks pretty good after the first few hours.
Something funny about The Island of Dr Moreau is there was this weird movie based on it. From what I hear the film was mediocre. The thing that makes it memorable is the story surrounding it’s development where the entirety of the cast, the detectors, and staff absolutely HATED each other. There were plenty of clashing egos, the weather was horrible half the time, and various other problems made filming torture. The guy playing Dr Moreau would dress in all these weird eccentric outfits and they couldn’t really tell him no. He also had them fly out this tiny man who’d dress like him and that’s where they got the idea for the Austin Powers mini me🤣.

@@shreksnow1918 yea man, very bad translations can definitely ruin films and videogames alike. That Vivisector game looks rad, I saw Civvie vid too and yea I would really like to get my hands on that game

@StormTheSource Yeah the game definitely looks awesome. I think one of my favorite parts of the video was when he said the cutscenes don’t get much better than this because you can’t exactly improve perfection. I was just dying laughing at all the weird dialogue.

La mia prima esperienza con half-life fu con la versione ps2 e si era in italiano
Ha ancora un posto speciale in me anche se preferisco il doppiaggio originale di gran lunga

Prima di essere un giocatore PC giocavo alla PS2 da bambino ma purtroppo non mi sono mai imbattuto in HL1, giocavo ai soliti Action Platformer. Si il doppiaggio originale é meglio ma sinceramente mi ha stupito la qualitá di quello italiano, almeno a livello linguistico e non di espressivitá

interessting fact: some of the pain/scream lines are the german lines for some reason.

Are the Italians HECU lines recorded word by word and then stitched together, like in the original language?
