Rebels here in fact do have plot armor. Enough to somehow stumble\damage the dude armored like a tank with their pathetic weapons, but still not enough to survive since they're noname guys and that would've been way too anticlimatic. In reality these rebels would had exactly zero chance of doing anything except that lucky explosion at the end. Funny thing, same applies to Gordon and the whole resistance in overall, but, y'know, G-man, gameplay priorities...
i love the detail of the metrocop breathing hesitantly before deciding to take a stand and fight at the beginning, really highlights the human instinct that separates the metrocops from the soldiers
@@Ansioso53So basically the Combine has a "Family Cohesion" thing, so if you were to successfully do a task that was set by Overwatch as a Metrocop/CP, your family would be spared. If you failed, they would kill your family the second you die or fail the assignment. These Metrocop's families in the video are dead
Come to think of it, Overwatch knew there were 3 cp's stationed there, when 1 was still alive, Overwatch assumed the cp was still alive and taken care of the rebels, but when it died Overwatch realized the problem and sent in the Wallhammer to deal with the situation, albeit to capture the rebels rather than killing them.
@@NoNameTaken117 Perhaps yes, although the CPs did already call for help at the start. Knowing Overwatch, they'd still send reinforcements to a location regardless of attacker's status. That's heavily present in Half Life 2 when CPs get reinforcements even before getting wiped out. You might be right though, all I know is that the hammer whacked'em all.
Even if the CPs hadn't radioed for help, the very loud flatlining noise and overwatch communications (That are usually present in the games) would have alerted them to the threat either way. It's actually kind of ingenious, in my opinion. The flatlining noises make stealth impossible and overwatch having atleast some kind of awareness of the status of all overwatch units also make it impossible to cut off any calls for reinforcements.
@@adudeontheinternet8246 Exactly, and they even have cameras or some some sort of scanner built into their helmets. Fyi, it's a Wall hammer, it's practically struggling to live, but it said to it's Ordinal It was still alive, despite it's hagged breathing and it's face plate blown off.
I have a theory that there's a huge difference between CPs and Soldiers. Bigger than we think, even. I think Soldiers don't even have their own vocal chords anymore. The speech centers of their brain are routed directed to pre-programmed modules of specific inputs and outputs. That's him breathing, but not him talking. The speech center of his brain might be all that's left, but where a brain would normally be lights out, he keeps functioning.
0:50 i like how you can see the cop shoot before his gun actually points at the rebel in the doorway. I doubt they were trained very well, being so unmodified compared to soldiers
Damn, that was fast for another 3-minute piece. I really like how the training and providence of the different characters come through in their actions. The CPs are basically conscripts intended to operate under Overwatch supervision 100% of the time, so when they're put up against an actual opponent who fights back, they're immediately off-balance, hesitate, forget basic procedures under stress, and so forth. The Rebels, meanwhile are a little sloppy owing to a lack of training, but have a drive behind them. They've already committed to their purpose and get it done, even if they display a fatal lack of urgency after the CPs get off a radio transmission, and Overwatch reads their flatlines. But Transhuman Soldiers... They're something else entirely. Their entire life is to fulfil the function of an immune cell in an organism so large the word 'civilization' can't even scratch at it. They have no self-preservation instincts left, only the pragmatism or programing to remain alive for the sake of completing their mission. Unlike many other game, where it's just a limitation of them being 'games' when every living enemy you meet fights you till their dying breath, no matter the cost, Combine soldiers would actually do that if their mission profile demanded it. They're terrifying, badass, my favorite antagonists from any setting, and Parry God does them justice like not even the games do.
Spectacular summation of your point Absolutely agree that the way this world operates is honestly, absolutely enthralling; and easily puts you at the edge of your seat yearning for more From the strange and monolithic structures the combine put up, to the way they operate on the "street level" It very much is like a massive organism parasitizing it's victim. I never realized how brilliant it really was until reading this. But as you said, the small nuances in behavior from each persons perspective is absolutely insane to think about. Good show! Side note: One of the guys, specifically the guy with the CP tattoo seems like he was ex-CP Quite interesting supposing how cruel he was to the surviving metrocop.
@@backinyourcommentsectionag3191 I thought all the combine soldiers basically had most of those helmets like implanted onto them, and were barely human any more underneath? I love how that everyone in that room immediately feels guilty for executing the CP. Even the guy who executed the CP immediately gave an excuse to a question nobody asked which means he was probably trying to convince himself more than anyone. Nobody can argue with it too, twenty seconds ago they were already determined to kill everyone in that room, and trying to argue it now would just create internal conflict, low morale, and a lowered guard that would of let the Wallhamner murder them all in the end anyway. All of these moral dilemmas and the resulting conflict simply cannot exist when you're fighting against an enemy that took over the planet in seven hours. So what's left is the deafening silence of everyone in that room, despite the Combine being willing to do the same and more, was thinking the exact same thing that what just happened was fucked up and absolutely nothing can or should or be done about it.
I like your comment, but I assume you're analyzing it as a civilian and looking on things with a civilian perspective/psychology. The point you're missing is, these people are literally living worse than animals (which are already extinct by this point) and they can sacrifice or die for anything. Wallhammers are early versions of the perfected OTA. Well, all OTA units in HL:Alyx. They're the early version of the Combine Soldiers you see in HL2, and a specialized version at that. @@charlesc.9012 I thought that the whole point of the Overwatch version of Combine Human Collaborators was that they were so indoctrinated by their cybernetics and brain washing that they were wholly dedicated to the Combine? He's not telling the resistance fighters to not resist out of mercy, he's doing it b/c his prime objective is to end hostilities and surrender is one of those solutions. The ending scene - the blind half-dead wallhammer letting out a muffled 'can't stop' groan as he hears the ordinal's demand and reporting 'negative visuals' and being 'still active' despite lying on the floor as he expires is arguably more terrifying than the wounded cp's plea for mercy

Unbelieveably impressive, I think you do the Half Life 2 atmosphere in Source 2 better than almost anyone
Oh no, that Wallhammer doesn’t care either way, it’s basically just a machine at that point with enough human emotions to make punishments and rewards a viable control mechanism. I often wonder thought does the Combine deliberately treated humans worse off compared to other conquered sapient species throughout the multiverse and universe or the combine essential goal is to either entirely subjugate a species whole or outright render them extinct
well here is the thing I don't know how they treat their other species but I know that in the half life universe Humans are really good at adaptability compared to the other species. That's why they do subjugate them so hard but at the same time if you pay attention to the dialogue in Half Life 2 and it is a major plot point, they where letting the resistance do their work because the combine could not figure out efficient local teleportation. So you could make the assumption that they held humans so tightly because if they loosened their grip humans would be able to push them off world eventually. But yeah the Half Life universe is so fascinating.
@@morganf7310 I agree that the Half Life Universe has an extremely high potential and is epic but there is so much unknown about the combine aside from well the dystopian treatment and supression field I still do wonder if they are gonna let the field go off or they were hellbent on human extinction alas if extinction is the real motive why try to integrate other species just tsar bomba their homeworld out of orbit
@@thedoruk6324 The Combines goal is truly unknown how ever we know at least partly that they want to integrate ever species they can into their empire and take their resources while also modifying those spices to be completely reliant on combine technology to even live. Also on the subject of bombing the worlds from orbit you have to remember that they are and extra dimensional spices not and extraterrestrial one so I don't think they have space fairing vessels, or at least not in the conventional sense of massive fleets of large ships. And their true goal is probably take the resources from the planted they opened a hole too while subjugating the indigenous population into doing the actual work of obtaining those resources while also integrating them into their forces to make the subjugation of the next planet they conquer easier.

The background environment alone is worth watching this for, that beauty in desolation both in visuals and tone is really excellent. I've always loved the design of half life 2 and alyx, these shorts really get it, the atmosphere, the characters and those weird little quirks and details in the combine machinery or the occasional xen organism's behavior is truly immersive
Love that, while the technician works on the combine terminal, you can see it moving around, and even when she leans against it (I think it's essentially having its data drained into that drive she stuck into it) it still twitches and shifts in the background. Oh my god, This is quite possibly one of THE BEST SFM Animations out there. It completely feels like this is an Official Valve animation and the Atmosphere and Setting are AMAZING! Great work!
My God, this was absolutely incredible! You really managed to make the action scenes feel grounded and stressful, while at the same time not pulling any punches regarding the resistance getting killed just as ruthlessly as they had Civil Protection. The parallel between the officer getting finished off and the Charger wheezing out his mission report was also fantastic. The only point of criticism I have is that the dialogue for the resistance members was too quiet compared to the Combine, which made their dialogue hard to make out at times. You've managed to capture the grim side of Half-Life fantastically, and I can safely say this is my new favourite fan-made SFM/S2FM animation.
Whats really neat is that the rebel that survived doesn't actually have plot armor. His survival makes sense. The Wallhammer unit was in front of the rebel when the explosion happened, the source of the explosion was behind the wallhammer. Wallhammer unit took all of the shrapnel and most of the concussive force, likely taking at least one piece to its spine leaving it unable to move, paralyzed. Barely alive likely due to its augmentations. Meanwhile, the rebel, who ironically was saved by his enemy, likely only suffers from minor concussive and hearing damage, and probably PTSD.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE! I'm so engaged by this and mesmerized, it's crazy! You do stunning work, and I really hope to see more of this -- Hell, I am excited for the possibility of a movie or something! The emotions are so well captured, and the reality of that world really hits you with these characters fast-acting decisions. The execution of that Protection Unit really took me off guard, and the pure luck of that mans bullet hitting the wallhammer's shield unit to make it malfunction! It would be so redeeming to see a big animation project. I'd love to support it. Keep up the AMAZING work!
The way the camera moves, the still segment of the scenery at the start and the lighting, combine corpse and background in the end of the video is all in all is brilliant cinematography, it reminds me so much of the movies Children of Men and 1917. The calm at the start and the way it lets feel the 3 resistance soldiers would be safe only for that heavily armored combine to strike down everyone, I love it so much. This legitimately feels like a sequence in a Half Life 2 prequel movie!
Oh my God, *phenomenal* work. I can't get over the scene with the metrocop they drop. Given all the two-faced stuff the Combine pull (like how they fake you out in HLA), you're so torn as to whether that's him actually begging for help or just another mindgame to buy him time. The way the hacker looks away from him right before he gets shot, and how everyone feels like such hot garbage afterwards - it's so much well-placed detail packed into what's really just a five second timespan. These Metrocop's families in the video are dead
2:20 holy shit, yeah I knew that alive CP was a problem. The hammer nailed those rebels in just about 15 seconds.
When the metros can’t successfully contain a threat, they send in the big guns!

Love how the characters actually get built up before being slaughtered, shows the amorality and mercilessness of the Combine
It shows how merciless combat is in general. If you didnt win, your in for a bad time.
What if you didn't win, but you also didn't lose? Still in for a bad time?

So what's left is the deafening silence of everyone in that room, despite the Combine being willing to do the same and more, was thinking the exact same thing that what just happened was fucked up

well here is the thing I don't know how they treat their other species but I know that in the half life universe Humans are really good at adaptability compared to the other species. That's why they do subjugate them so hard but at the same time if you pay attention to the dialogue in Half Life 2 and it is a major plot point, they where letting the resistance do their work because the combine could not figure out efficient local teleportation. Your videos are so professional and well done! You hit the Half-Life atmosphere so well I get immersed every time. Keep it up!
Once again, absolutely insane work. I'm continually impressed by your stuff, it always puts me to shame LOL. And one continuous shot too!! Very well done.
Thank you! I don't think that's at all warranted, haha. Love your work as well and hope to see more!
@@TheParryGod aye, thank you. :) can't wait to see more from you either!
Have you ever hit with a stick someone so fucking hard their entire neck breaks?
The wall hammer just did!
Holy hell. Even if this whole thing is just 3 minutes, it screams such satisfaction out of it. Really like how the "nerdy" Civilian really isnt keen on executing the CP soldier, so his collegue has to.
Also that Charger bursting trough was an unexpected twist to me, but that doesn't mean I dont like it - you can't expect Combine to give up so easily.
Either way, your hard work for Month has really paid off. Its a shame you are such an underrated animator. Please, whatever else you will be working on, with or without breaks - take your time. Thank you.
Even the reaction of the heavy Combine soldier getting a direct shotgun blast and his negligent discharge at the wall!? The detail in this is incredible ! I think you need a series!
Damn! If only you had time and money to make a whole series! Imagine a guerrilla resistance taking on and ever threatening Combine, that would be superb!
Please keep this content coming!
Nice work and looks incredible
This one works like an amazing live wallpaper 3:02
I was wondering why that first metrocop didn't flatline...he wasn't dead! Brilliant touch.
01:24 that bonnet looks good
Impressive work as always
Having Chungus use his cut baton attack just makes me wish we got way more ruthless enemies in HL:A
"Chungus"
Amazing
You want cloakers in Half Life? Are you a masochist?

No seriously, I want the combine in HLA to be a threat. I played a lot of MMod and it's sad to see the combine floomp around like 5 year olds with BB guns, look at a grenade I throw at them instead of running away, wasting so much time not moving from cover to cover but being in the open and sometimes just standing there and taking damage (Looking at you APF). And being so. goddamn. slow.
I never coded anything in my life and I am tempted to go and make an AI overhaul mod every time I'm reminded of HLA's combat
@@Neo2266. I feel like it was designed this way so combat in VR wouldn't make you too sick
@@peppermillers8361 Thanks, I hate it
2:58 I can’t believe the Wallhammer was still alive.
And people thought big= slow, Wallhammer turned that guy into the President from Spaceballs
I really do love how the guns are shown as having a lot of thoonk to them, it makes them feel way more powerful and makes the Resistance seem hopeless, amazing work as always dude.
the quality of the animation, the atmosphere and the details are incredible, keep it up, it's so cool !!!
It felt like it was a scene from an action movie. The camera work was accurate and these characters and their movements made me feel like they were real. And for a long time, combine has not felt like a simple NPC to me.
I hope that more videos like this will come soon.
Great work Guys👍🏻
Nice animations man! Keep up the good work.
like how at 0:47 the combine thinks about his next move knowing well that hes probably going to die when he turns the corner.
Idk how you keep topping yourself with every S2FM you make. You're just pumping out masterpiece after masterpiece rn.
Bro, this is just unrealistically high-quality work! I clap standing up, it turned out very cool! For the first time I see this on S2FM 😍
INSANE WORK! thank you for makinng this incredible short ♥
I just realised that the opening shot is one of the concept art pieces for half life alyx by tristan reidford, very cool!
yet another amazing half life animation that i wish never ended. amazing work
Absolutely INCREDIBLE!
Holy shit, this quality is so good. I'd love a whole movie set in the perspective of citizens/rebels. This style would fit it so well!
God damn, what a masterpiece. This is the best S2FM I have ever seen, amazing animations and great acting too!
God tier work again, your sfm shorts never fail to make my jaw drop!
Keep it up!
Holy shit...
This is perfect. Hands down. The audio alone is amazing. The gunshots felt very real.
Bravo.
Every animation you put out is high quality, cinematic level goodness. You are an inspiration and I absolutely love your stuff dude!
you're the reason i've started learning how to use S2FM and trying to make shorts on your quality :D
