"WHY do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties?"
Best quote from the original game
"Gordon doesn't need to hear all this, he's a highly trained professional."
Do you know who ate all the donuts?
The fact that Gordon kinda saunters around and presses his luck by exploring every nook and cranny along his route really captures an almost nostalgic sense of gamer curiosity that I had when playing this back in the day. I love the detail of Gordon noticing all the little features that we all remember.
It makes sense, he was legitimately delayed due to service malfunctions, he probably knows he will be the guy in chernobyl if anything goes wrong. Therefore, the more time spent dicking around increases the chances that something critical to the experiment breaks and it's delayed long enough for Gordon to slip out of being the crystal & button pusher.
@@garywyse3904 I like this interpretation!
I am 43 years old and still to this day absolute crazy about Half Life. It is still the best game ever made.
In my case, 53. Damn fine game when I played it. Started it all. Nice.

“Grodon” walks like a cowboy with a six-shooter strapped to his side. 😁…but seriously man, great work! This is incredibly well done 👍

Looks more like he is walking around with a dollar coin clenched between his cheeks.
This is incredible. I don't think anybody has presented Black Mesa in such a cinematic manner before. The framing, the shots, the usage of depth of field to accentuate the mood. Loved the entire thing but especially:
- Gordon squinting when the sunlight hits his eyes at 1:13
- Him scratching his beard at 2:27
- The introduction to Gordon proper; the framing of the text and half his face is very cool - 2:45
- The brief moment of "something's not right" as Gordon stares at the passing G-man at 3:55
- The hilarious 1:1 recreation of the "test chamberrr" line at 10:04 with the scientist's mouth synced up right up to the end lmao
- All the different variations of scientist faces and hair
- That downward glance by Gordon as he starts to suspect the experiment may be riskier than originally thought (12:03)
- That G-man appearance at 15:14 gave me CHILLS! What a perfect edit that was
Moreso, Gordon's mannerisms as he rides the tram and walks slowly to the Test Chamber really reinforces the fact that it's just another day of work for him - he's disinterested, bored but some things do manage to perk him up - the Guard's comment about the ponytail, when he suits up, and especially when he sees the girl at 1:23 - that little hint of a relationship is a nice touch.
That entire resonance cascade sequence was great. I appreciated how you made Gordon drop onto his knees. The guy really carried the guilt of dooming the planet throughout the series, despite him not saying a single word. His reactions on getting teleported were on-point too (I just wished you'd included the energy beam shooting off into the control room - hearing the "It's not shutting DOWN!! OH NOOOO!" is one of my favourite parts of the game).
Also Barney has no right looking like such a sexy beast 0:33

@@Animux.Studios Hi, it turned out quite a bit cinematic, especially the skeleton animation of the models looks better than others that turn out to be more clumsy and almost, but in the first episode there are flaws - Gordon's hairstyle looks like a mole, in hl alyx it looked fine, you could not change; the music in the black mesa inbound chapter goes to the original Prospero01; it was not shown when Gordon puts on a suit, the launch of the suit interface, well, that's my opinion; when the cascade resonance begins, scientists where their death was not shown at the top, that is, to make it more spectacular, although it will be 18+, I have everything or I didn't notice anything, and the second episode what will be in it?
Anyways Grodon Freeman
I'm surprised no big streaming platform has yet to make a Half-Life live-action or anime series. Perfect mix of foreboding atmosphere, action, and horror.
late reply, but I think it's because the Half Life series truly utilizes the gaming medium to its fullest, unlike TLOU where its pretty much just a movie
People can make a side story revolving around other characters in HL universe though, but the main plot? It will be changed so much that it'll be unrecognizable
Exactly! I mean they did one for Dead Space.
Honestly. I think Gabe will never fully go into the idea of making a HL movie or a series simply because their stubborn nature at Valve. Just look at how it ended with JJ Abrams, from what I think, the main reason is that Gabe fears that the whole HL atmos and lore would change if any other movie production company or any director would shoot it. I dont think there ever will be a HL movie or series, but hope dies last, doesnt it? :)
@@burn5495I'm surprised half life community are still alive in these days, unlike ddlc fandom straight up dead after a few years of releasing a ddlc plus for marketing which is a disappointment release to be honest.
Also i kinda agree for what you says.
This game could make a good series
The attention to the GAME DETAIL when Gordon pushes the specimen, and it bounces a few feet in each time you "push" it. Top Tier
I love how Gordon is half an hour late for one of the most important experiments in the beginning of his career, and he's just strolling around the facility, slowly making his way to the test chamber, but not without checking every single corner of the lab first
“Take my time, maybe get some doughnuts…”
Haha, there are more things. He just looks like he's there for the first time... or he's on drugs 😄
I would dress him casually (the badge is enough) and sit him in the train. Trim the ride significantly - he could check his watch couple of times, raise eyebrow when he sees some unusual action. Maybe wink on the girl? Gordon is obviously a cool guy - but at the same time an expert. He could play Tetris on the train ride or something. And he doesn't need to be 100% silent 🙂
But! I really appreciate sticking to the original - and that's what author was after here, obviously. Also camera work, cut, directing are pretty dope. There are weaker places and also strong ones. So - congrats 👏
@Aubrey Jarvis oh I'm laughing now :D Super secret facility where you come wasted, no one cares and moreover they let you push some weird crystal into hi powered beam machine, which, of course, explodes - sounds like HL :D
Why the rush, he's already late.

I wish I could go to work effortlessly not having to respond to any coworkers attempts at engaging me like how Gordan refuses to respond to any of his coworkers whilst instead just gives subtle gestures and an occasional thumbs up. A true inspiration I must say In the art of non-communication tactics/small talk avoidance.
You can.
If this is the closest we'll ever get to a Half-Life movie, then I'll be happy. Please make episodes all the way until the end.
dude, the "awww man, you cut the ponytail...sellout" makes this just feel so real. like, im imagening he dared gordon to rock it for a week, but gordon dipped out half way through, also the changing from his voice to the intercom seamlessly is a nice touch
The original model for Gordon had a pony nub but it was later removed.
@@ResoluteGryphon im aware, i thought it was a nice detail, lol
NOO, COME ON, MAN! You can't end it there! Damn, and my heart was pumping, too!
Let me tell you something, as the biggest Gordon Freeman simp there is, seeing a full length animation with the official model brings me insurmountable joy. His mannerisms and facial expressions in the tram were such a pleasure to watch. They seemed so natural; excellent animation indeed.
I see your Gordon is very nonchalant and serious. I can respect that, even if it's not the way I personally visualise him. It will come in handy with his prodigious combat skills once he needs to face hell.
I do like that from early on (4:06) Gordon is noticing that some things are off. That, coupled with the other incidents where people mention things malfunctioning, by the way he warily observes you can tell he's thinking things are off. When he sees Gman the second time, I imagine he must've been weirded out. He was going in the opposite direction as him in the tram after all, so how could he have gotten there first? Also, Gordon's a real psychopath for not helping the scientist in need. He needed some toilet paper, man! Now he's going to die in the most humiliating way possible. I'm kidding, of course.
The resonance cascade scene was nuts. I love that brief glimpse of Gman and how in the split second Gordon looked away from the sample, everything went to shit and the moment he looks forward again, he's sent back from the explosion. The spectrometer alarm that Crowbar Collective uses is fucking amazing, so hearing it always gives me chills. I always thought Joel Nielsen absolutely outdid himself with that sound design. I fucking love that, even though we can't see his face, we finally see some sort of emotion from Gordon. Slumping to his knees, bringing his hands to his head, in complete disbelief of the situation and/or perhaps in attempts to drown out the noise that is an explicit reminder of what the Anomalous Materials team has just done. There's so much happening here, I love it. He must feel responsible for this disaster, even though it wasn't his fault at all. A lot of people believe that Gordon is at fault for the resonance cascade even though all he did was push the sample. I've always rejected this notion.
Finally, I love that even in midst of this disaster, Gordon's first reaction to seeing the protozoan is to touch it. It's endearing and I'm pretty sure most people would do that too, lol.
You did an excellent job with the atmosphere. Whilst it's true that some things could be improved upon, such as the walking or some of the lip sync animations, or minor spelling mistakes (2:58), I have nothing but praise for you :) I have always adored the atmosphere in your videos, you have an excellent way with it and I've always thought you excel with dark, horror-like ambiances because your use of lighting is always great for it, so now that the following chapters will be so dark, I can't wait to see what you'll do with them. I'm excited for the next video and so happy that this is out. This comment was long because it's my opinion that good effort is deserving of comments that have a bit of thought/effort put into them, highlighting what the person did right, but I understand some creators may not see it this way. If it's too tedious to read long comments, just let me know and I'll tone it down! In any case, I felt this video absolutely deserved a long comment, so yeah. Excellent job!
not at all i enjoyed reading every word truly means a lot. ❤
My sincere gratitude for taking the time to write it it's a pleasure,

The part with the microwave wow. Only true fans of hl would understand how the creators really put attention to detalis in this art 7:10

To be fair, the part with the microwave is actually canon, as Dr. Magnusson references back to it specifically in Half Life 2, Episode 2.
It's one of the most popular jokes from the game..
What about the poor guy who needed tp
Probably what makes this aoustanding is the camera angles, usually what happends with this kind of works is that the angles get boring pretty fast and you lose interest really quickly, but here he tries his best to put a good shoot everytime to avoid this effect. Plus the visuals itself are already good, without those angles it wouldnt be the same. Amazing work honestly.

Search for "Ivan the space biker" to see Valve's first concept for the Half-Life protagonist. Be-ponytailed Grodon was somewhere between that and the 'Charlie Sheen in Arrival' we eventually got on the HL loading screens.
We dont need a movie studio to make amazing adaptations of games, we just need highly skilled fans of a series, who are willing to provide the community with great animations/films. Hell, i would pay for a movie made by great fans to go watcg in the cinemas
At @4:55 I expected the guard’s mouth to open while the keypad was beeping 😂
I love how everyone talks to Freeman and reply to themselves or eachother in his place, it's almost as if he's a voiceless protagonist in a game
After ruining the microwave dinner, I was almost expecting Gordon to go back and press the red button under the security desk

There's a red button under there!?
@@MuffinMan0521Yup, if I recall I think it's for an emergency alarm of sort?

This is an S-tier animation. The scenes are superb, and the choreography is very well made, there are also so many little details in this video, that it's easier to say what is not included in this video. The only two things that I think could be improved on are the walking animations and the personality of Gordon (he looks like a sociopath until the test chamber where he shows some actual emotions). Overall this is a great video, thumbs up to you sir, for doing it all on your own
Thank you, there's a lot of improvements will be done for the next episode
Yeah I agree, this is really good but I think Gordon just nodding to acknowledge peopled greetings or something similar would make him seem like less of a robot. Ofc this is something I had problems with the game too so I hope Im not coming off as too critical, this was a really good animation
one other little thing that needs improvement is where the walker robot is first seen as it and the character movement seemed to lag due to it on screen.
I personally think Gordon is a sociopath. He's emotionless through all the games, has absolutely no problem murdering anyone in his way including his coworkers if you played that way and has a high IQ which is commonly found in sociopaths.
We need a tv series like this. Maybe in real life, or SFM with an expansion mod.
💯💯
The mood of the game is present, and Gordon being a sociopath is quite inline with the narrative of the series to my mind. You can't make him social and not ruin the atmosphere coming from the actual game. Love what you do, man. Keep it up please
I'd say it was a design choice, the author has shown emotion on his character models before "The last Goodbye' but I don't think that experience was a good one for them. It looked a bit awkward in some parts. Their take on 'Lambda Man" basically crossed over into this though. The fact that everyone is cheerful while Gordon just gives them blank looks is both funny and awkward and I would have appreciated a bit more facial emotions especially during the microwave scene. I'd rather have a bit more "The last goodbye' with gordon then "Lambda Man' personally.
@@VancoreAMVs I got your point. Yes, nothing is ideal in this world, but I am grateful for the possibility to watch the HL story from yet another angle. It gives me a living in the game feeling somehow. God, it would be so nice to have a VR remake of the original HL one day :)
The direction is very good. You put as much effort into sound as you do in visuals. Like how you have that Chernobyl style ambient music playing while the anti mass spectrometer starts going and how the sound p.o.v. cycles between muffled and clear pending on focus. This deserves to blow up even more, you really capture the survival horror side of Half-Life 1 in your other stuff too.
This was described beautifully thank you ❤
Wanna hear something really weird? In Bulgarian (and I suppose Ukrainian but I can't be really sure) Chernobyl means something awfully close to Black Mesa. Cherno - is black, Bilo is a flat spot between mountain peaks...
@@NazarovVv That is really fascinating.
that music is part of the ambience made for a xen chapter in black mesa if I remember correctly
I love how even in this series Gordon absolutley refuses to sit down for that long ass tram ride.
That explains his strange walking))
Love how you've added effects such as Motion blur/depth of field. This is an incredibly piece of work and as a huge Halflife fan this is a dream come true cause we'll probably never see a half life movie or tv series in the near future and this is as close to a netflix tv series as it can get 😅
Out of all the Half Life cinematic's out there, yours is by far the best I've ever seen! Just everything, the expressions, the choice of music, the action of every character, it was perfect! I no doubt think this took you quite a while to make, and it sure paid off. You really should be proud! :) I've always wanted to make a Half Life gmod or sfm machinima of some sort, but this is far from what I can do, and this is freaking amazing! I cannot wait for the next episode, and to see the Black Mesa story told your way.
The walk cycles are killing this for me, like everyone's got the same serious hip problems.
yeah i was going to comment it but i hope they will fix it in the next video
I also was going to comment on that, like everyone has a deuce to drop.
It's one person working by themselves and animation is difficult so maybe ease up because what do you create? What a surprise, nothing!
@@HarlanDaleAbsher Considering the fact that this was the only negative thing in the whole video, proves that this creator did a superb job in everything else from camera angles to music and sound. The hip thing was not attacking this person's hard work; not at all. Some people need criticism in order to correct things and make it better. Now this person can tweak a little more on this hip thing and make this video totally awesome.

Really spectacular work on the scene in the chamber, the way you animate Gordon reacting to the various mishaps and the gman really gives foreboding tone to the whole scene. That was so cinematic and incredible, I loved it. Those moments where the camera blurs the background then refocuses were a great touch, I also loved the shot composition and choice of angles. The movement of the construction workers at 1:01 was really convincing, and the character motions overall were great. G-man was subtle and not overdone, which was perfect. You're really playing to the game's strengths in terms of storytelling with a mute protagonist and "showing not telling", especially with the dialogue. I found myself getting really immersed in the world of Black Mesa, even though I've played the game many times it felt like experiencing it for the first time. It just feels so much like a movie. And that SOUND DESIGN 16:01 was AMAZING, that whole sequence was really well constructed, I got chills when he sees Xen for the first time, then the shot at 16:39 does a great job at painting the Vortigaunts as this ominous alien threat... absolutely spectacular.
You should be really proud of yourself for creating this video, I think you deserve WAY more views. You are definitely one of the better Half-Life animators here on RUclips.
that was very thoughtful of you, Thank you for taking the time to write your comment truly means a lot ❤
No lo hubiera dicho mejor, me quitaste las palabras de la boca.
One small detail I love is how Gordon looks so young. With a lot of fan art and the original box art and designs, Gordon looks as though he's in his late 30s, maybe even his 40s. You keep his basic design while making him look much more his age, which also helps to reinforce the idea of him being as athletic as he is. Great job.
yes it is one of the things i had to keep focused on
This is truly amazing. This brought back so many memories of when I first played Half Life nearly 20 years ago. I'm lost for words at how breath taking the details are. Thank you for embarking on this project and sharing with us.
Absolutely beautiful, the animation and cinematography looks incredible. I can’t wait for more!
That was honestly insane.
The fact that you 1 manned what amounts to a full on cinematic film just blows my mind.
this is SO incredibly good, and the fact that it's a one man project? that's crazy! some things i noticed that could make a difference: don't make the legs go too outwards on the walking animations, that way they'll look more natural. and another thing is make the lyp sync a liiiittle less exagerated. everything else is amazing, camera angles, shot change, etc. very good job
I feel like it fits Gordon once he has the HEV suit on, that thing was designed with protection over comfort/mobility in mind i mean have you seen how thick the groin area on the HEV suit is material wise? A lot of padding there in various forms and the only way a man could comfortably walk with that much in that area is a waddle like walk. You are right in that the walk cycle does seem a bit off for the rest but from a one man project that's a lesser thing given how good the rest of it is.
Oh my god, this is soooo good!
Little details, believable movements, lighting and camera angles, this is just awesome man!

My only criticism is that Gordon barely has emotion, especially in scenes when people make jokes or greet him. Makes him look like a sociopath.

@@turaychu Help the guy on the toilet, hell no. Honestly it seemed like he almost smirked at the guys predicament but it was most likely just the camera angle. If the series continues I would like a bit more facial expressions on Gordan to give more direction on why he does the things he does like ruining 'you know who's' dinner. Did he do it on purpose, did he see a free meal in the microwave, was he just being a @ss hole. No idea, there is some sort of personality with Gordan presented to us but its pretty absent there and a few other scenes.
since i've watched freeman's mind for me gordon being a sociopath is cannon
@@Animux.Studios my only real criticism is the walking cycle. It honestly looks like some people really need to take a shit but are just carrying on because they have a job to do and can't be interrupted for even a moment. I could accept it for the hev suit since it had been described as a bit discomforting to use until you adjust to it, but the other characters felt a bit.. disjointed? Not sure the term to use here so I'm going with that.
Some other movements feel a little awkward too, but even then, the cinematography more than makes up for those other shortcomings. Even the walking issues- mostly. Still somewhat bothersome and clashing even with that fantastic cinematography and those gorgeous visuals.
The worst offender in the walking cycle issue was toward the beginning, with those 2 guys walking at 10-15 frames per second. Nothing could have made up for that except making them have more frames
This is awesome!! Brings back so many memories. The first time I played HL and did this first mission , I was blown away with what was happening. And to see it as a spectator instead.......very cool my man , thank you!!
the camera angles, blocking and general cinematography is really well done, does a lot to give it a very real cinematic feel.

@@Animux.Studios which version of Xen will you use for this project? The Black Mesa one?
This brought back memories from 1998 and also the replay with Black Mesa. Amazing work on cinematics and direction 👌🏽 kudos to everyone at Animux
This deserves so much more views! Great job and I'm looking forward with episode 2!
I know I subbed a while ago but I’m just now getting around to watching this with full attention.
Damn, this rocks. I can tell just by the details and little variations In camera angles that a lot of love went into this.
Even though I’m not nostalgically attached to this game series much at all (a few of my friends were) outside of references that have snuck into other media as nods, I like the setup here. Excited to see more.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT!!!!!!!!! This absolutely made my entire month. I'm going to save this for nighttime so I can watch whilst eating with all the lights off. I have such huge expectations, been waiting for so long. I'll leave another comment when I'm done watching. Good fucking job
Means a lot ❤ do enjoy
I don't even know where to begin.
So that's where I'll begin.
Everything is just so fucking good in this, everything from the Gordon model to post-processing to the animating, the camera work, I haven't seen something this good in years! I've never seen your content before but I can already tell you're a god-like animator, you're insane, dude.
I cannot wait for more, if I had money to spare, you have no idea how much I'd throw at this.
The only disappointment is that I haven't heard of you sooner, I'm speechless.
Great work! Your efforts are clearly displayed here, glad to see real talent get recognition.
I feel so much love has gone into recreating it the way it has been done here, Amazing!!
This came out absolutely AMAZING, seriously underrated stuff dude. The animation and effects are so well made and paced as well!
really glad you enjoyed it thank you so much
Wow!!! Excellent job! This movie must have taken a long time to put together but the work shows.
thank you
Excellent, so amazing to think how far the concept of fan work has come.
This is so impressive! It was cool seeing this after playing.
I feel so sorry for Gordon. He seems depressed even before the incident - no telling what he has gone through beforehand. You hear the subtle remarks throughout and especially in the break room. I wanna give him a hug. I'll bet he had hard home life. Could add to the lore.
I liked Gordon taking off the helmet with the Vorts around. In my own headcanon, Gordon not wearing the helmet when he meets the vorts allows them to connect with him better. It also gives the Nihilanth’s access to Gordon’s mind as well at least to be able to track and teleport enemies too him. Though I couldnt justify anyone letting him in the chamber without it (tho its Black Mesa, safety is not a top priority) but you did a good job animating it happening. Maybe would have done something to transition the old vort noises to the clearer Vortagaunt speech as Gordon is exposed to them longer and longer, but otherwise fantastic work! Love the variety in models and faces!
Kind of the same there, also a very good time to have a mental breakdown and lose the helmet for the rest of the game.
thank you Deconyus for the nice review, just to also mention it was a very dark environment which will make a hard sight wearing that helmet.
@@Animux.Studios True! Since they were surrounding him and he already must have a hard time seeing WITH his glasses on underneath.
This was great! I even saw some BM:BS stuff in there!
If you need me to voice Otis, I’m all for it, because this is incredible.
I sincerely appreciate your willingness to help, i''l take it in consideration when OBM starts in production

The Gman distracting Gordon is a absolutely brilliant touch as well as the musical cue leading up to it! Very well done❤❤❤
Well, that was really cool! I enjoyed the animations, the cinematics and the sounds, really cool. Ah and big respect for mister Animux and his (usually very difficult) choice to cut the losses and finish a project: you hit the 90% mark!
This indeed felt like a movie.
and the fact it's made by just ONE person is unbelievable.
you did a great job!
thank you so much
Incredible work! Popped out of nowhere like a christmas present.
2:59 : "Thearetical physics" i got a good chuckle out of that typo haha
Awesome. From someone that has played the Half-Life franchise from the beginning in the 90's this is so well done. Congratulations on your work.
This is incredibly well made. It feels like a movie. Can't wait to see the continuation!
How TF DOES THIS NOT HAVE MORE VIEWS, THIS IS A MASTERPIECE
Just found this and had to watch it. It's awesome. I love how Gordan is constantly looking around, taking everything in, even on the ride in, something he's done how many times already. And while he's waiting on things he's pacing and moving around rather than being a statue. His expressions are subtle but good. As he's heading in, he looks like he just doesn't want to be there. We've all had those days. Look forward to more
A lot of hard work was put into this. Great job!
wow .. just wow .. amazing .. i've just been transported back 20 years ..kudos to you for taking the time to produce that . blown away
Thank you so much
God damn this is focken amazing! everything from the animation to the characters, the way you made gordon look stressed, and hesitate putting the crystal into the anti mass spectrometer is just amazing!
thank you so much for watching
@@Animux.Studios no problem chad :D
I love the cinematography in this. I get the vibe that this iteration of Gordon Freeman is on the spectrum. I never really thought of that idea for this character until now but I think it fits really well with the silence he gives most people and could also explain why he can adapt in situations like what he is about to walk into. Hope we get to see the other expansion characters in later episodes.
we''ll fine out soon 😉
This is absolutely stunning, cant compliment all the aspect enough! Leg movement and hip rotation need a bit of fine tuning but wow what an experience.
Thanks for talking me back there!
Excellent, surprised by how well it was done, and how well it captured the vibe of a more serious take on HL story. Nice !!!!
