Valve float is happening not due to power level, but due to engine speed (RPM) and boost pressure. The increased boost pressure on the back of the intake valve effectively reduces the seat pressure on the valve seat. If you had a larger turbo that could move the same air at a lower boost level, the valve springs may be fine to 800whp. Of course, putting in upgraded valve springs is a great idea when upgraded cams are put in place. Our stock bottom end RB26 made over 850whp, but the factory oil pump failed. The factory oil pump is the weakest link in the RB26DETT.
+Steven Ross-watt yeah you are on the right track, but you still need to open them and close them, then hold them closed. It is a dynamic cycle on the chamber side vs. a constant pressure situation on the inlet side. if there is a raised pressure pushing against the valve spring and one bang of pressure pushing for a very short period of time preceeded by a short period of compression. The speed at which the inlet valve closes is crucial to how much power is made. When the spring has to work against more pressure the roller lifts of off the cam and then hits it again later causing unwanted wear and compression loss.
This is completely wrong. A bigger turbo can't move more air at lower boost pressure, the path the air is taking is the same regardless of turbo size and the limiting factor in the air's mass flow rate is when the air passes through the valves because they are much smaller than the area of the air-intake. To increase the mass of air entering the engine you have to increase the boost since you can't directly increase the velocity of the air through the valves. Secondly increased pressure on the back of a valve would increase the pressure on the valve seat. Why do you think force from air pressure is the opposite to force from a spring? You know there are pneumatic valve systems where air is used as the spring and they can actually handle higher RPMs than metal springs?
They are very tough, mine with similar mods but slightly bigger PTE 6262 turbo ran around 600rwhp at the race track for around 3 years. I also ran high boost at over 2 bar and 740rwhp several times at the race track, 1/4 mile and 1000m drags with no issues. It finally gave up when it dropped valve guides, rest of the motor was fine
So awesome. Getting to see you guys step by step over time just like anyone would do in the real world. Gives me some direction to go with my car. Keep up the awesome content.
a quality tune is key to survival, plenty of gt-r's die at 500rwhp more because of less than ideal tunes. I look forward to the continuation of the series.
+Stephen Cain didnt need to and overkill for our power. Granted down the track when we want 900hp they would be better but we like to try the most simple method so we can test components individually and help teach people as we go
I couldn't agree more. The tune is the absolute key to making good reliable power. CRD definitely know their jobs well though and this thing is a monster!
Thumbs up all the way from South Africa! I'm going to follow a very similar tuning path with my R32 GTR! Getting there slowly and posting videos along the way! Thanks for always posting awesome content!
I'm digging it. I'll probably never see my dream of an R33 but hopefully someday. I did get to drive my buddy's R32 GTS-T with the RB20 and it's alot of fun. Another friend of mine has an R32 GTR but I've never driven it. Awesome times though and great work as usual. Always a good day when a MotiveDVD video comes out.
100K miles and more then double stock power and still going strong. Now that's craftsmanship. Damn fine craftsmanship. If only the car was built lighter. It would be a supercar shredder.
1barnet1 The R35 single-handedly made other manufacturers to create a category named hyper cars. Only the best of the best get the GT-R tag. R32 will always be the godlike best car ahead of its time. All wheel steering, insane, that is what Porsche is utilizing now in their hyper cars. And that was almost 30 years ago now... Nissan is insanely talented car company, rock solid cars and the RB26 is one of the best examples.
Great job ,I always enjoy your videos that show the capabilities and the robustness of the RB platform, and the significants of a quality tune. Is it possible to have the same experiment done to and rb25 det.
what ecu, alot of people dont know that a haltech sport 2000 costs $2000 ,i have a rb30/26 with stock steel wheel turbos and am making 370 hp at the wheels at 14 psi but need a boost controller to push it further ,would be nice to see what hp u can get out of a rb30/26 with stock steel wheel turbos
would be interesting to see what max power u get from premium unleaded only and what engine mods u need to get more power just using unleaded fuel, just a thought
98 is just so prone to detonation compared to E85 that you have to have a big safety buffer in place. I wouldn't go past 380-400kW on this set-up on 98
Awesome work guys, love the philosophy of the build, have you considered investigating aftermarket differentials? Internet seems divided over their worth in a GTR yet Nissan was obviously interested in it as a area of improvement as seen in the Vspec
Head bolts don't stretch and blow gaskets, they go loose over time due tho the aluminium of the head being soft. Retorquing the head nearly always fixes it when you do it in time. It happens on ALL aluminium heads.
I always thought the two things that take a beating on an old engine with lots of kms would be the headstuds since they stretch when you install them originaly then over time the metal fatigues from the constant compression in the cylinders so i would expect they would strech after time . And well somewhat the same with valve springs they fatigue after the millions of times being compressed .
Not exactly. Factory head studs stretch under power because not strong enough, not because old. Valve springs rarely lose their pressure. Same deal. Boost simply over powers them.
I absolutely love this journey you guys are documenting of this dream car of mine, when i get mine in 2 years, i know what i want to do, i'd be super happy with 450whp on the stock bottom end, my dream power with a forged engine of course is about 600 - 700whp, a weekender, looks very realistic . Remind me again about the turbo you have on here? GT35?
Awesome, that's crazy power out of a stock internal 26. I've got a 400rwhp 25neo 33 drift car. "Stock" internals, balanced crank. spool billet oil gears and spline drive, arp head studs and metal head gasket. everything cleaned and checked. Still scared to push it anywhere near 500rwhp with all the horror stories you hear about rb's
Always loved the line from the original The Fast & The Furious movie...... "I owe you a 10 second car." Such an easy thing to do even in 2001. There was a R33 in the film anyway, so making a 10 second car is not that hard.
I'm confused, tomei doesn't have a 270 dur. ex. poncam, they have a 270 and 10.25 mm procam, if that's what you were using with stock springs that would definitely cause valve float combined with high exhaust pressures.
They did a limited special edition run of 270 Poncams a few years back. We went to purchase a full set, but they had no inlet 270s left in the world, so, we tried a 260/270 combo and it works very well.
To me this information invaluable ! I love this thanks Guys ! I didn't forget to SUBSCRIBE ! Honestly I am good at the spanners !but all too often my madness gets the better of method ! I love power!! 😁😁
What brand is the carbon (?) bonnet on the 32 ? I'm thinking of getting one for my 33 gtr but there's a lot of cheap shit out there that doesn't fit properly or would break easily
I've seen 1,794.7 hp and 1,155.7 foot pounds of torque from a 26 with a single turbo setup. Yes, an RB26, factory cylinder head but that's about it for factory parts.
What's the size of the exhaust? In Your dual vs. single video you mentioned 3.5" dump pipe and screamer pipe. What about the rest? 3.5" until the end? What about catalyst and mufflers? Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for the Feedback! I'm in the process of fitting 2x GTX2860 to the car but I cannot seem to find a correct catalyst converter which will keep up with the flow. Is there anything You can suggest? Seems that Your converter can withstand 675whp, so maybe you have a suggestion on cpi and size! Thanks! BR RoB
Had to grin reading the comment. Completely understood what You mean. Thanks for the answer! Waiting for the part 2! Keep up the good work! Cheers, RoB
Why so big? The new GTX3584RS is rated at 1000hp but is GT35 sizing. We'd rather have 900whp and mega responsive than have 1000+ and be laggy. Look into it Area under the curve makes for a fast car in real life.
MotiveDVD I asked garrett about the rs but they said that you can't use a twin scroll housing on the rs but it was a toss up between the two I was considering
It would be interesting to see a comparison between 2 of the gen 2 gtx2860r turbos and a good single like the rs on a gtr as the new 60s are rated to 475hp each
Rev limiter is 8500 on ECU ( tacho over reads so looks like 9000) we rev it to 8200-83000 or so R33/R34 factory rev limit is over 8000 so all good as we have a 33 engine ( 3/93 onwards is same as R33) Is not the rpm that breaks it, it is people hitting rev limiter and two-step that breaks it
We'd love to do more cars but we still throw our personal time and money at these project cars. As our subscribers and views grow, we can afford to do more cars.
Maybe the myth is you don't need to if you drive and tune properly? R32 has short nose crank, that is the problem. They break very easily. Long nose crank ( 1993 onwards) is stronger and only really breaks if you rev past 8500 ( factory R33 and R34) or bash off the rev limier and 2-step too much. Tuned and driven right they obviously last, as ours has lasted 4 years since we've had it and over a year on 600whp.
thanks alot for the answer! Im currently thinking of going 600whp for my 91 r32 gtr and im still unsure of what i need to upgrade (never touched engine with 20k miles), but these videos you are making makes it a LOT easier for mw to understand these engines :)
We are going to put a page on our website that list everything. Hard to give exact price as changes depending on who you know and where you live etc. Also, because we did it in small stages there was a lot more labour so hard to add that up too.
3.2 is a pretty proven package but what people don't realise is the amount of work required to a RB30 block to get it all to fit and bolt up etc which adds a lot of costs people don't take into consideration. Going 2.8 means it is "bolt-in"hence why we might go that option and look to build an engine that revs harder. Combined with short gears, it will work well
Thanks for responding is it because the movement of the car backwards like that puts more weight on the rear wheels reducing wheel spin? i am genuinely interested to know the reasons behind it.
GuyX2013 except for the Celica, WRX and Lambo video we just did........ and the WRX and Jeep project cars we have.... Our project cars come from our own pocket still so we buy what we like. GTR stuff also gets much higher views
Not sure what you are referring to exactly, but power is all based on turbo sizing. we made 500whp on low mounts and switched to single and went 620 while being more responsive and better to drive. Check out our Twins vs Single video to take a look
+MotiveDVD I'm talking about your video man. Like the title says clearly " how much can a RB make stock" and s bolt ons doesn't it make 600 ish or more
awww it has one of those ugly light intakes, I really hate those, ruins the look of the car, probably can't drive it at night either. Otherwise the engine sounds and uns bloody fantastic, that blow off noise is just perfect.
Beau Mancini test of stock block, stock oil pump, stock crank, stock rods, stock rod bolts and stock pistons. Totally stock bottom end No one ever said stock engine Stock head except for springs and cams too
Instead of doing half assed patches do it properly. Those engines can make power but most just grenade because of crap basic components. Decent pistonsetc. A 100k bottom end for a performance engine is totally worn out. So throwing 30lb at it is really silly. Nissan seemed to think those engines were good for about 12lb! Though look at the US where fairly basic 5.4 LS engines are in the low 8s. Engines are ofcourse handgrenades with the pin pulled but a LOT cheaper than the money spent on this engine
Thumbs up for mad 1/4 mile times plus Royal Nasho sticker! Well done man!
you guys need to get together again for another build!
Mighty Car Mods motivedvd at least show quarter mile times, unlike you gents
Damn Aussies sure know how to build and tune GTRs

I was wondering how the float was happening, I had thought it was only at high rpm until now. Learned something today.
thanks for the info. I only make 400hp on my rb so I'm not that worried just yet but it's good to know!

DSPORT 850whp on a stock RB26 bottom end? Wow! But yh that factory oil pump does need replacing for an aftermarket one.
Motive just gets better and better. You need your own TV show seriously!
Ahh, the R32 GTR. Dominated the Australian Motorsport Landscape before being banned. A true everyday-mans supercar. Great build.
They are very tough, mine with similar mods but slightly bigger PTE 6262 turbo ran around 600rwhp at the race track for around 3 years. Wolf3d and SST tune too I bet.. :p
So awesome. Getting to see you guys step by step over time just like anyone would do in the real world. Gives me some direction to go with my car. Keep up the awesome content.
Insane the power and ability these cars have. My favorite body style and motor for gtrs
a quality tune is key to survival, plenty of gt-r's die at 500rwhp more because of less than ideal tunes. I look forward to the continuation of the series.
Lucky we have Jim from CRD too! We tell people that good tuning, good choice of products and support gear and good driving is what keeps it alive.
why didnt u go dual valve spring?
+Stephen Cain didnt need to and overkill for our power. Granted down the track when we want 900hp they would be better but we like to try the most simple method so we can test components individually and help teach people as we go

I just sold my 1990 300ZX TT.. Next car will be a R32 in a couple of years hopefully! Great video!
Might I ask how your quest for an R32 went?
You can't beat that raw power & visceral manual gear change. Can I get an Amen?..... lol
this shit blows top gear to the weeds
Keen as hell for Part 2, Andrew!!!!!!!!!!!
Us too! We are juggling 4 project cars at the moment!! So well get there soon.
Haha I know the feeling all too well... Seriously so impressed with the power so far!
I'm digging it. I'll probably never see my dream of an R33 but hopefully someday. I did get to drive my buddy's R32 GTS-T with the RB20 and it's alot of fun. Perfect setup Andrew! GTR is King
part 2 asap please!! is there a more in depth documentation of the progress of this car other than the 8 or 12 videos on youtube?????
We've been busy lately but the new turbo kit is on and tuning next week
Great job ,I always enjoy your videos that show the capabilities and the robustness of the RB platform, and the significants of a quality tune. Is it possible to have the same experiment done to and rb25 det.
We've seen RB25s with same mods and Greddy forward facing plenum make very close to this power and last just as long
You guys are THE BEST!!!! Thanks a lot or all these amazing info and helping the community with real life results!
so thats stock crank, pistons and rods, thats bloody awesome
Stock oil pump too

Love this series of Mythbusted.
great job on the car and keep the links coming as Alot are watching you and learning about RB's

Absolutely awesome. Id love to see it get into the 9s on a stock bottom end. Is the bottom end from a r33 with the upgraded oil pump drive?
Late model 32, which is same as 33
"Geee Dee ARRRR"
continue makeing the rb videos bro i love them ,you all DOWN AT MOTIVE GARAGE ROCKKK

gt3584r thatd be maxed out at that power levels you can see in theyre new series they upgraded turbo.
1320 video hoodie! Nice!
This was fun to watch also doused with knowledge. Great!
When it does let go I think you should do a forged 2.6 not go 2.8 or 3.0
We will go stroker to do a true comparison
Is this on a standard rb26 plenum ? If I saw correctly woow !!
what was the "average" compression readings across the 6 cylinders ????????????
Awesome, that's crazy power out of a stock internal 26.
I've got a 400rwhp 25neo 33 drift car. "Stock" internals, balanced crank. spool billet oil gears and spline drive, arp head studs and metal head gasket. everything cleaned and checked. Still scared to push it anywhere near 500rwhp with all the horror stories you hear about rb's
Are you guys still using the standard oil pump?
Yes
+MotiveDVD wow thats a suprise always thought they might be a issue at that those power figures
lol n1
n1 pumps are rubish
Very intrestring serie wonder how far you are gonna get! 500kW is all ready very impressive.
4:30 you can hear 1320 kyles voice haha
4:29 guy from 1320 video voice
Go to a larger diameter drag radial to hit 150mph without having to select 6th
Can't wait to see the engine build....make it an RB34 stroker!!
At what point do you think you should replace the factory oil pump? Thanks.
Asap. Weakest link on rb engines
Always loved the line from the original The Fast & The Furious movie......

To me this information invaluable ! I love this thanks Guys ! I didn't forget to SUBSCRIBE !
Honestly I am good at the spanners !but all too often my madness gets the better of method !
I love power!! 😁😁
An r32 gtr is a dream car for me but they are so damn expensive here in the United States! I dream to get one one day 🤘
What brand is the carbon (?) bonnet on the 32 ? I'm thinking of getting one for my 33 gtr but there's a lot of cheap shit out there that doesn't fit properly or would break easily
I've seen 1,794.7 hp and 1,155.7 foot pounds of torque from a 26 with a single turbo setup. Yes, an RB26, factory cylinder head but that's about it for factory parts.
kyle eaton Where have u seen that kind of power level from an RB26? I'd love to see them too.
What's the size of the exhaust? In Your dual vs. single video you mentioned 3.5" dump pipe and screamer pipe. What about the rest? 3.5" until the end? What about catalyst and mufflers?
Thanks!
The entire exhaust is 3.5", including andy mufflers and cats
Thanks!
BR
RoB
We can't legally suggest not using a cat, or admit that we aren't. It certainly look like a cat under the car though so it must be.
To get a Cat to flow that power its needs to be rather large. Think a 5-inch cat.
Had to grin reading the comment. Completely understood what You mean.
Thanks for the answer!
Waiting for the part 2!
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
RoB
rb 26 vs 2jz?
So when will we see part 2 ? I'm looking forward to seeing you crack the 140mph barrier also what is this inlet test you plan to do ?
New turbo kit is on now and tuning next week
MotiveDVD nice, I'm planning on putting a gtx4202r on my 33gtr next year hopefully garrett have released a gen2 version of it by then
Why so big? The new GTX3584RS is rated at 1000hp but is GT35 sizing. We'd rather have 900whp and mega responsive than have 1000+ and be laggy. Look into it
Area under the curve makes for a fast car in real life.
MotiveDVD I asked garrett about the rs but they said that you can't use a twin scroll housing on the rs but it was a toss up between the two I was considering
It would be interesting to see a comparison between 2 of the gen 2 gtx2860r turbos and a good single like the rs on a gtr as the new 60s are rated to 475hp each
why did you go single not double valve spring ?
that 9 sec is so bloody close lol
First the driver right tire went out. Then we went back to the dino, then our rear tire warn out. So we replaced it and went beck to the dino
Great video. was the pistons and conrods all stock. ?
Holy Mountain Ent bottom end not touched since it left Nissan factory
wow. very surprised to how much power the stock bottom end can take.
Surely you will run out of turbo soon, I didn't think 500 real Australian awkw was possible on a 35r well done!
Agreed. Were probably not far off maxing it out, yes.
MotiveDVD guys, can you please confirm what rpm and boos did the valve float begin?
30psi+
please do 2j and VG!!
Youre an idiot. Get out of here.
lol
crying like Hillary! hahaha LOVE IT
Keep up the awesome videos. Thanks!
are the tail lights stock? they look very dark red.
Stock ones mate
Should really highlight "on E85" because hitting that power without E85 would be very difficult to achieve. Also, what oil pump?
Cameron Walker everyone uses e85. No one expects it to be on 98.
lol that R33 doing 13s with a chute
What fuel pump was used for this setup?
What rpm are you reving to? Is it running a stock oil pump? Stock oil pumps usually break if reved passed 7800rpm
Rev limiter is 8500 on ECU ( tacho over reads so looks like 9000) we rev it to 8200-83000 or so
R33/R34 factory rev limit is over 8000 so all good as we have a 33 engine ( 3/93 onwards is same as R33)
Is not the rpm that breaks it, it is people hitting rev limiter and two-step that breaks it
Ok. Awesome vid! Always like the stuff you guys post!
Andrew. love gtr's but now it's time to do budget supercar EVO style :)
We'd love to do more cars but we still throw our personal time and money at these project cars. As our subscribers and views grow, we can afford to do more cars.
Can't wait mate .love motive and what your doing for the car scene.next year drag battle (my EVO vs your GTR) :)
I think people know now that Andrew will race anything. Win or lose
How comes you didnt upgraded the oil pump? Its like achilles tendon of the rb26
Do a 2jzgte one please!
450 to the wheels on pump?
bad ass 32. can we get a running total on cost to see the "budget" hahaha. including stuff that you got from sponsors
also i hope you skip the nitto 2.8 and go straight to a stroked rb32 bottom end
We are going to put a page on our website that list everything. Hard to give exact price as changes depending on who you know and where you live etc. Also, because we did it in small stages there was a lot more labour so hard to add that up too.
3.2 is a pretty proven package but what people don't realise is the amount of work required to a RB30 block to get it all to fit and bolt up etc which adds a lot of costs people don't take into consideration. Going 2.8 means it is "bolt-in"hence why we might go that option and look to build an engine that revs harder. Combined with short gears, it will work well
***** never knew that! can't wait to see what happens next
+MotiveDVD keep up this great work. hands down most informative videos on utube. love the skylines! awesome!
awsome car! is it a n1 block?
Nope. Ae explain what engine it is in the video
Stock
Damn now i wanna up the power in my R34
very cool
Why do you only get one pass at the track?
What oil are you guys running in this engine?
Castro Edge 10W-60 or Nulon 10W-60
Hi what's your rev limiter set at
Factory 8200
that car lifts so much I would put in stronger rear springs probably help your launch.
You would think that, but it launches better on the softest setting on the rear with the most amount of squat possible.
Thanks for responding is it because the movement of the car backwards like that puts more weight on the rear wheels reducing wheel spin? i am genuinely interested to know the reasons behind it.
ringlands or oil pump will go next :)
They were supposed to let go ages a go according to internet and GT-R Experts :)
this channel should just be named GTR and Evo DVD it's like 95% of what they make vids on which gets old
GuyX2013 except for the Celica, WRX and Lambo video we just did........ and the WRX and Jeep project cars we have....
Our project cars come from our own pocket still so we buy what we like.
GTR stuff also gets much higher views
With low mount turbos doesn't it make like 650 w bolt ons ?
Not sure what you are referring to exactly, but power is all based on turbo sizing. we made 500whp on low mounts and switched to single and went 620 while being more responsive and better to drive. Check out our Twins vs Single video to take a look
+MotiveDVD I meant like parallel turbos. Isn't that what the RB has out of the factory
RB26 comes with twin turbos and 300hp at the engine. Lucky if it makes 250 wheel horsepower stock
+MotiveDVD I'm talking about your video man. Like the title says clearly " how much can a RB make stock" and s bolt ons doesn't it make 600 ish or more
Still confused.
best of luck
That's insane.
I dont understand.. how 500 something horsepower.. become 675 wheel horsepower as you said..
Part 2 pls :D
can i get help with mine plz bro??
Can the 5 muppets who gave this a thumbs down please explain. You must know more than these guys and have better cars of course so please enlighten me
Sounds like he drops his daughter off at daycare so he can go race his car lol
maybe try 4.44 diff ratios and hit that 6th gear hahahaha
loving the vids andrew, some of the best on youtube. btw that gtr is sex on wheels, its beautiful.
its not stock when you change internals as head bolts, gasket and so on...should say with stock internals
Relax man. we explain it in all our videos
you still owe me a 10second car
that car is nice, but i think i wouldnt want anything more than 500whp on a street car
That's why we have a boost controller. We can run high boost at the track and low boost on the street
awww it has one of those ugly light intakes, I really hate those, ruins the look of the car, probably can't drive it at night either. Otherwise the engine sounds and uns bloody fantastic, that blow off noise is just perfect.
So this is a test of pistons and rods, because this isn't at all a stock engine.
Beau Mancini test of stock block, stock oil pump, stock crank, stock rods, stock rod bolts and stock pistons. Totally stock bottom end
No one ever said stock engine
Stock head except for springs and cams too
I would just be happy to have 300 WHP .....
