5 Thrash Metal Guitar Riffs to Practice Every Day
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- These are thrash metal guitar riffs and techniques you should practice every day to become a better rhythm guitarist.
You’ll be practicing different techniques in each of the 5 metal riffs. And you’ll also be combining methods in each riff.

Even better, I show you how to write your own thrash metal-style riffs in these lessons. Because you’re not just learning 1 riff or the technique. You’re also learning how to go beyond and fit these riffs into songs.
Here are the times for each lesson (and thrash guitar techniques being played):
00:42 - Thrash metal riff lesson 1 - triplets, palm muting with riffs
04:36 - Thrash metal riff lesson 2 - Fast downstroke riffs
09:21 - Thrash metal riff lesson 3 - Riffs with hammer-ons and pull-offs
14:58 - Thrash metal riff lesson 4 - Alternate picking with roll-offs
20:04 - Thrash metal riff lesson 5 - Triplet chromatic riffs
22:57 - 3 ways to support me and my channel, which the links are listed above
Practicing these patterns every day will also help you with playing transitions on the guitar. Think of a verse going into a pre-chorus, then a chorus, and then maybe a bridge.
The patterns you’re playing will help you create those types of riffs that tie the different parts of a song together.
Keep it Metal,
Jason

love your sound, what gear are you using
This lesson was actually refreshing. I learned something new without torturing myself trying to learn the spider walk or memorizing scales that I don't know how to use. Thanks.
Dude that’s what it’s all about...walking away with something you can actually use and glad this video helped!
i do something similar to spider but going down with the 2nd and 4th instead of reaching up
instead of a full spider you could just reach up with the 2nd finger and fret the root of the power chord
Foreal
Practice the spider walk and watch your playing get better
Thanks jason, im 14 and i started playing around 6 months ago. Ive recently got into thrash metal and this rlly helps!! Thanks

Jason your stuff has really helped this 60 year old Metalhead retiree, self teaching guitar for 3 yrs now something I always wanted to do! Love Metallica, Overkill, Diamond Head, Megadeth, Judas Priest, UFO (Schenker), etc mainly thrash! I am also from Tampa (Riverview) and plan on visiting Replay Guitar Exchange ASAP! Keep it Metal Mr. Stallworth!
Also this is the FIRST time I ever subscribed or posted on RUclips! Your style(s) are right up my alley!

The triplets in the first riff are not really triplets, but straight 16ths, although we're not nitpicking here, we're alternate picking ... I'll get my coat!
The rest is bull's eye for metal playing and the riffs are fun to play and not just dry exercises so Jason is da man! :D

1) Make sure you download my free practice guide (with tabs): ruclips.net/video/JCoiJB3PpE0/видео.html

Dude this is awesome. I started off playing 6 string guitar as a kid during the first wave of thrash but have only really played bass in stoner rock bands for the last 10 years or so going back to playing guitar in a thrash project is one hell of a shock to the system! @@jasonstallworth I like that shirt, I might have to get one of those. Especially where I live in Southern California, it is mostly just R&B and rap people. They have never even heard of one single Heavy Metal band or care to listen to one. It's a very low intellect, homeless, drugged out area. At least when I jam on my guitar, I am seen as either a Guitar God or a noise maker. There's no competition, literally.

Can I use tritones in thrash I noticed on the e minor pentatonic there are 3 tritones on the 6 th and 12 th fret on the e bass string, also on open e and a sharp on a string.

Using guitar rig 6 Rammstein preset, with metal super strat washburn x40.

First time viewer, immediate subscribe after the first lesson. Good stuff and good teaching method, thank you!
The first 2 I've got up to speed, the third one will need work, I've got the sequences memorized so it'll just take repetition. My dang lazy pinky keeps striking the skinny strings when I pull off on the 7th fret!
I'm excited to work 4 and 5 (especially) - very Megadeth, I love it!

Jason is a superb player, and a excellent teacher. He teaches things that you can actually achieve.
Hello Dude! First I have to say, in another video of yours you commented that you been playing since 1990. I have to say that made me feel sorta shitty as I’ve been playing since about 75-76 and I still SUCK. I love your videos, they’re always helpful and make me laugh. I appreciate your help! Just wanted to say THANKS. -Sabbath-lovin old lady
Thank you...keep pushing yourself!!
Wow dude awesome tutorial for us metal guitar players! The first riff is very Slayer-esque! I love also learning Megadeth riffs from Rust in Peace are serious workouts in addition to Metallica riffs. Iron Maiden is a good workout as well for the gallop rhythms and scalar practice sequences. I still am not good enough to master Friedman solos but perhaps one day.
Yeah man, those are all awesome bands to learn from!! And as far as solos, dude, I personally don't bother trying to learn other people's solos. It is good practice and I used to do that. But I really try to just take bits and pieces and use that as an influence when I'm creating my own solos. Hopefully that makes sense.
Great lesson..
🙏🏻🤘
Hi man love your content, do you by any chance do 1 to 1 lessons for beginners over zoom? Also I'm relatively new to guitar (played on and off over the years) , bought a decent guitar but I find the tone to be very muddy, when playing thrash type riffs and hitting single notes on the A string it's hard to make it out, could that be a guitar set up issue?
Thank you dude! I haven't been doing one-on-one lessons but I did just release a metal guitar course for beginners here: metalmastermind.com/metal-guitar-apprentice/
He sounds like the devil of rock from the GH3 tutorial

Was creeping death an inspiration for your second riff?
Not necessarily for that riff, but I do love all of the older Metallica albums

Jason, you should grab a mic and Imitate Ivan from FFDP, he would love it.

What pedal are you using? I need that tone.
I really don't remember what I was using for this! It was either BIAS FX 2 or the Fortin NTS. But lately I've been recording everything with a real amp (EVH 5150 III). I have a playlist for recording with an amp here if you're interested called Metal Tone in the Mix: ruclips.net/p/PLUj6Esz5qJKLcp3iyMeKzau10zIxeG58M

Hi Jason not to conflict with you but why upstroke on 16.07 when you have time to down stroke after the pull off.I am seriously thinking about buying your metal course,I have researched playing only 2 years 54 years old can play master and battery and most rythm easy now even Blackened. I look towards yourself , Bernth from Austria, Ben Eller ,Tim Hollman ,Guitar Mastery Method from New Zealand. And of course CArl Brown,
Thank you (dude, I used to work under someone with your exact same name at my old corporate job!!) I honestly don't have an answer as to why other than it's what comes most natural to me. Often times, I don't think about what I'm doing...I just do it. I realize you have to rely on methods but at some point, and you may already be here, you start to develop an intuition when you play.
So this means you may learn a song but play some parts slightly different. To me, that's okay...in fact, I applaud and encourage that. Because this is how to develop your own style of playing. Hopefully that makes sense.
That's also why my Metal Riff Master course includes a bonus module on riff writing.
I'm also a fan of Ben Eller...he's got some solid content and isn't just showing off but teaching!
Jason, do you use a real distortion pedal or this is all via app? Could you please give some information on your software set up? Thank you.
I have a blog post going over all of these types of details here: www.jasonstallworth.com/metal-tones-virtual-and-real-amp-settings/
awesome video! what amp are you using?
Thank you...I really don't remember but it was probably BIAS FX 2 or one of the Neural plugins like NTS or Nameless. I actually don't use sims that much anymore and my newer videos are with my EVH 5150 III miked.
Ur last timestamp in the description is spaced incorrectly
Thank you, I’ll have to fix that!
im new and starting im currently 18 rn , do you think this will help me learn to improve?
I hope so but it’s really up to you and how much time you’re willing to put in.
I also have a beginners metal guitar course (link in the video description) that you may find helpful
Hi Jason
What kind of pedal or amp do you used to achieve this thrash metal sound ?
I think I used BIAS FX for this. This is what I’m using these days: ruclips.net/video/LQ68ib-rpIs/видео.html
@@jasonstallworth Thanks Jason!
Jason, what picks do you recommend for metal and why? I like smaller thick picks with pointy edge for solo lead playing but these are problematic for chugging rhythm stuff and vice versa thicker picks like Dunlop Flow and Big Stubby are excellent for chugging rhythm but suck for solo lead stuff. I hate swapping picks in a song.
I've played with thin-medium picks most of my life, like .60 to .73 and mostly use Dunlaps, regular style picks. Nothing fancy.
I've tried thicker picks and just did not like them at all. I actually have a video on this very topic here: ruclips.net/video/7Seas7mKBxg/видео.html
I personally go with jazz 3s, specifically the ultex picks

Can you mention the tempos of all the riffs??
I don't recall the tempos for these but what I recommend is learning the notes and starting out slow, and gradually build up your speed. And it doesn't necessarily have to be played super fast. The goal is for the riffs to sound good to you.
@@jasonstallworth I am doin the same but just for the reference point I was asking just to know the original tempos because its yiur original songs so you know better about them😉
@@sumit9757 I wish I knew! lol Though I do sometimes use my own songs and albums as lessons, more than often I'm making up these riffs on the fly for my videos. I will say that my BPMs tend to range between 160 and 180 for stuff like this

And I got this old Kramer that he gave me for a bit extra and the bass gave me as well for a bit extra food projects to fix up I should have some extra hardware at home and I took the neck off and swept it and I also took the tremolo and swapped it it’s just a basic tremolo it’s not a Floyd Rose just goes one away I hate them I’m gonna do that have a Floyd Rose and be done with it can you do some door properly all these other Tremeloes it’s late I have got I’ve got one I’ve gotta get one of their guitars Jeffs the Stratta castor salt it’s so sick and extra little bit thicker than what I’m used to you can tell it’s really high and it’s probably an extra level up

Lol...I'll admit those dudes were a huge influence of my playing!
@@jasonstallworthHaha yeah I mean it's impossible not to be influenced by what you listen to, even I admit to having written riffs that sounded very alike to other songs. Bands were always influenced by those before them and it will always be that way.
