Have ya checked out Curberus and Herk on the TV series Once upon a Time? That was a good spin-off on those characters. Sorry, I can't remember the season they came into. There was only 7 seasons, shouldn't be to hard to find. LOL! I have all 7, so I'll see if I can find it. As always, fun to watch and learn the different versions!

There is evidence that Cerberus just translates to "spotted" which means to me that Hades saw a giant three headed hellhound and named it Spot, and that's adorable
I know it's a random Harry potter reference, but what Hades did by naming his dog spot is similar to what Hagrid did giving the name fluffy to the three headed dog
One thing you might be interested in is that Cerberus means "Spotted One" in ancient Greek. Yes, Hades named his dog "Spot." **Refreshes the page to see the comments. Notices about 1/5 of everyone made a similar comment. Sobs.** [edit] Apparently this is not true. :(
What is really messed up about Cerberus and Herackles's meeting was that both Cerberus and the Nemean Lion were children of Typhon and Ekidna. So when Hurc comes strolling in to take Cerberous, he does it while wearing the skin of his brother.....
A lot of people may call me insane but I would want to have Cerberus as my pet dog. Especially since I found out that his name translates to Spot so Cerberus is just a really good boy who deserves a lot of love for all the hard work he does.

Yeah my dnd character also carries thia title. He worships Ceto. He is that game's father of wemics, and a slew of redeemed incubus/succubus, redeemed cambions, and redeemed lamia. No wonder he worships the goddess of sea monsters.

Bro. I've known about Orthos and Cerberus for years, yet I didn't know they were brothers. Thanks for that tidbit. I have no idea how I didn't know that. LMAO
I love Cerberus. I wrote a book with a character who got a "puppy" from Cerberus and called the two headed puppy Cebus. My character in that book was an underworld guardian, his name was Bensvelk Vur Malsvir meaning "good and evil".
I know Hagrid got the Dragon Egg from Quirrell so he could needle him about getting past Fluffy, but was it ever explained where he actually got Fluffy from? Only person who makes sense is Hades.
I like the rationale tales as well, with Greek mythology I believe they were based on these true story's and over the years became more myth like. Even places like Mount Olympus and Hades I could see being based on real places. Ancient Greece is so fascinating as well as Ancient Egypt! And Gunther at the was freaking fantastic haha!!
One of the things I like about your videos is that you put the adds in good places so that they don't come in the middle of a word or otherwise make a hash of whatever you are saying. Makes it much easier to listen! Great content and presentation, too!
I remember reading a retelling about the story of Orpheus, and when Cerberus was listening to the hero’s music, it mentioned that Cerberus was remembering the good old days when he was a normal puppy, before he turned into the monstrous guardian of the underworld. That always made me wonder if it was based on actual mythology and if there’s more tales about that dog.
You missed the mention of Cerberus in Aeneid where we learn of its penchant for cakes. Also, The 2 pups theory can be linked to Vedic celestial hound Sarama who gave birth to a pair of brindle dogs called the Sarameya (lit. offspring of Sarama, also an archaic term for any dog as Sarama is the mother of all dogs) which were given to Yama, god of death/hell to guard the hell (underworld/patala and hell/naraka are two different place)
Bonus fact: in some translations of Ancient Greek to English, Cerberus translates to Spot. The guardian of the entrance to the underworld is named Spot. And he’s a very good boy.
You forgot what his name is translated into. Cerberus means spotted. So he is literally named Spot. Also I don't mind the rationalization of the myths.
