The main take-away I get any time I listen to a Greek myth is that, back in the day, the only way to be ensured a long, happy, and uneventful life was to be an unnamed background character...
@@ginnyjollykidd no, lol, having the attention of the gods was just kind of putting you into Big Trouble (the kind you seldom asked for but ended up having to deal with anyway). I guess the gods got bored in the days before television or widespread publication of books, because... darn.
Persephone, angry that Adonis chose Aphrodite over her, went to Artemis, who was angry with Aphrodite for killing one of her favorite humans, to devise a plan on killing Adonis. Ares, angry that his lover was being taken by a human agreed to disguise himself as a boar to kill Adonis, then lie and say he wanted to kiss the boy’s thigh.
It’s kinda odd that Aphrodite tortures and kills Adonis’s mom for being so beautiful, but then falls in love with Adonis for the same reason. Hypocritical Gods 🙄
Someone give The Fates a medal because I cannot. Falls in love with the son of the innocent girl you cursed only to have him be barely even interested in you and then killed. Lol.
Which means that, the king, the father of the child, is also his grandfather. And his mother is also his...sister? Wait wtf, I'm confused, also the wife of the king, is at the same time the mother and the grandmother of the child?!
I think Adonis should be considered more as the manifestation of “ unbridled desire”. Myrrha’s desire for her father, his repeated desire for the sexual encounter, Persephone’s desire for a child (or lover depending on the Version), Aphrodite’’s desire to live a life with Adonis, Ares desire to eliminate ate his mortal rival...even Adonis’ love of hunting... all of the characters are helplessly fixated on the object of their desire, to the point of total obsession. Adonis to me represents all fixations, preoccupations, and obsessions (or addictions) that overwhelm or thinking and dominate our actions and ultimately our lives.
In another version, Aphrodite actually falls in love with Adonis due to a curse from Zeus. See, Aphrodite was not just the goddess of love/desire, she was also the personification of it. So any time Zeus fell in love with anyone, which as you know was a lot of times, it was Aphrodite causing it/cursing him. To get even with her, he forced her to fall madly in love with not only a mortal man, but a mortal man who didn't even really love her back. Definitely interesting that in some stories falling in love was considered a curse.
Fun fact, in my country we have a river called The River of Adonis, because in spring the water turns red (because of the soil) and little red flowers (poppies) would grow on its sides, which is said to be in memory of Adonis.
There is another version to the boar chapter: Early all roses were white. (Important!). Aphrodite bragged so much about her new lover, that Zeus decided to pull a prank on her and send a boar after Adonis. He was killed by that boar and as Aphrodite heard him scream, she came down to earth again, just to find him dead. As she screamed and whined, she cut herself on a thorn of a rose. The blood, dripping from the cut, colored all roses around Adonis lifeless body red. That's why we give red roses as a symbol of love. :)
Oh that’s a really cool version! I always learned that when she was born from the sea, roses came along with her. It’s why they are featured in Botecelli’s painting: the birth of Venus :)
Given that Persephone is queen of the underworld, I think killing Adonis is the ultimate “No he’s mine, I’m keeping him and bowls there’s nothing you can do about it”

Seriously, poor dude couldn't help that everyone wanted a piece of him (including the boar...for some reason). I feel bad for Adonis, honestly. And his mother, jeez.
The version I heard the most is that both Persephone and Aphrodite fell in love with Adonis at the same time but fought about who could spend time with him. So as a compromise, he would spend a certain amount of months with each goddess and 1 month with who ever he chooses. When Adonis picked Aphrodite, Persephone was pissed and thought if she can't have him no one can so sent a wild boar to kill him when Aphrodite wasn't looking.

Definitely the easiest person to be punished was actually Myhrra’s MOTHER. She’s the one who (without realising her error) had put her daughter AND grandson in lots of danger in the first place. As for Aphrodite, I’m wondering if she knew that Adonis was mhyrra’s son? Because if she didn’t, she indeed got the taste of her own medicine by causing herself to go mad after his death. The two poor souls didn’t deserve these fates at all
I hate myself for wanting to know, but can you see if there is a messed up origin for Is This The House of Mistress Mouse? I just started watching your channel but I do love it.
Metamorphoses is probably the least reliable source for Greek Myths. Most of his stories are basically him casting the Roman Gods (Hence why "Cupid" is used and not Eros) as capricious asshats. This is the same guy who made up the whole thing with Medusa getting raped, as opposed to her and her sisters (Who don't appear in Ovid's take) just being monsters originally, and Poseidon just banging one of the Gorgons. Odds are high that Aphrodite and Persephone were both into Adonis in the original myths
Great series Sir, I'm stuck watching it now. As a kid growing up in the Caribbean, there are tons of these tales told in school, word of mouth, etc. The one which comes to mind, several do, is about the animals travelling to the German town of Bremen. Is that one on your radar?
I’ve always preferred this version of the myth because it keeps the classic Greek myth troupe of vanity; while also allowing Persephone to stay loyal to Hades. This is important to me because they’re the only healthy and fully functional relationship between two gods.
I really love how you mention other versions of the story and the fun ways you explained the story so it made sense to me. You should teach these in school as a teacher.
🚨*Spoiler Alert*🚨 Well you could probably find the book on Audible, the library or bookstore. It's also available as movies. The story itself is pretty simple. Dr. Jeckle is a good man and scientist. One night a wicked man named Hyde appears causing trouble and damages. The next day Jeckle comes by to pay for the damages. This keeps happening to the confusion of the people. Now towards the end of the book. Dr. Jeckle had been trying to separate the evil side from the good side of himself in hopes that he could do this to everyone. Then he would cleanse the world of the evil half of man. What he found was that one could not exist without the other. Hyde became increasingly evil because there was no good to keep him restrained. Also in order to get rid of Hyde he had to get rid of Jeckle. (Seriously, how can you be purely good if you kill?) So in order to restore the natural order Jeckle kills himself leaving a note that explains everything.
Poor Adonis, he is "molested" by the goddess that cursed her mother or stuck in between the worst custody battle in greek mythology. There is a version where Persephone pulls a Woody Allen and get the hots for the kid she raised? I all case scenario with death Adonis finally got some peace.
For a moment I thought you wouldn't mention Persephone's involvement in Adoni's story. And when you did mention it I was reminded of the animated series Class of the Titans, which has an episode based on the Persephone-Adoni-Aphrodite myth. I highly recommend COTT to any Greek Mythology geek. It is really entertaining and fun. I don't know if you have already covered Thanatos and Hypnos.
Totally didn't even make the connection that Aphrodite experienced heartbreak because of the curse she put on an innocent baby until you pointed it out, that's awesome! Do Chinese mythology like wukong his story is one of my favorites and I would love to learn more. Love your videos by the way
Can you do a video on Thanatos? He's one of my favorite gods and I'd love to know more about him.
I love your Greek mythology videos there so informative and cutting edge I would love if u did the Egyptian gods I like to know more about them
Your channel has become one of my favorites. I love these mythology videos the most and I can't wait until you touch on norse mythology. I was wondering if you're planning on doing a video on Dionysus? I think it would be really interesting.
I thought I was the most handsome man?
Nope that's papa oompa
No it's your father
Ofcourse you did
Your no man kim you're a supreme leader 😌✊
I'd love a video on Ganymede. He's one of my favourites, even though he's basically never mentioned.
Hey john could you cover an Italian myth, like Romulus and Remus or the Befana? Ive only ever heard of these stories from my grandparents and Id really like to learn more about them and hear what you have to say on the matter.
First version was that its just a simple boar, later its apollo, later artemis and the last being Ares in 5th A.D.
My favourite goddess is Artemis. Would you tell her and her brothers story?
Ive been checking my phone all day for this video 💕i love your videos keeps me happy !
Small reminder: Cupid and Venus are the Roman names, Eros and Aphrodite are the Greek names. For consistency ;)
At first I thought all these warnings Jon gave us were crap but.......I got a feeling this time he was right so I subbed, liked and put post notifications like a good child of the gods
I always enjoy your videos
Hey Jon. Another Great Video, Thanks!
Have you ever considered doing the Arthurian legends ( Camelot, the round table, Excalibur, etc)?
I can't wait for the next video.
Remember “Jon shot first”
you are literally the only youtuber that could bring up a sponsor and id actually watch the entire thing and get it
wow, that means a lot! thank you!!
So this was all Aphrodite’s fault and the the whole Persephone thing was a retcon. Am I getting that right?
And can you do a video on minthe?
What did Aphrodite do? She warned him and he didn’t listen. I don’t think she was in the wrong here.
You should do the lovers of Apollo, I love Hyacinth’s story
I’ve always preferred this version of the myth because it keeps the classic Greek myth troupe of vanity; while also allowing Persephone to stay loyal to Hades. This is important to me because they’re the only healthy and fully functional relationship between two gods.
Does 9 min count as "Early Squad"?
Started watching because my daughter subscribed- stuck around for the interesting and informative content.
I really love how you mention other versions of the story and the fun ways you explained the story so it made sense to me. You should teach these in school as a teacher.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
I honestly really wanted you to make this video so i’m glad you made it
I would LOVE!!! too see the origins of Dr jeckle and Mr Hyde
🚨*Spoiler Alert*🚨
Well you could probably find the book on Audible, the library or bookstore.
Your script is absolute perfection. 👌💕
Poor Adonis, he is "molested" by the goddess that cursed her mother or stuck in between the worst custody battle in greek mythology. There is a version where Persephone pulls a Woody Allen and get the hots for the kid she raised? I all case scenario with death Adonis finally got some peace.
@Catalina Plaza Your statements are TRUE!
My fave kind of yt videos 100%
Then when he died Persephone and Aphrodite continued to fight over Adonis till he had to split his time between the two goddesses
The story of Adonis’ mother reminds me Oidepus with the whole loving your parent thing 😅
Didn’t Aphrodite curse his mother... ironic that she fell for the son of the girl that she ruined the life of.
Also, the one where Persephone killed Adonis via the boar so she could keep him was the first version of the myth you heard, huh? So I'm guessing you've seen a Let's Play of Dreaming Mary, too, or maybe played it yourself? XD
Jon please cover some norse mythology soon! i’m absolutely positive that’s going to bring even greater success to this channel.
@9:44 "What the goddess found when she returned broke her heart into a million pieces"
APHRODITE: Hey, Eros! Pick it all up!! This is your fault in the first place.
EROS: Aw, come on!!
Hey John. Could you cover "The Juniper Tree"? it's one of my favorite Grimm Fairy Tales.
The most handsom man in history is clearly The Click
Uwu
@@thatemonerdthing.ugh.6332 clicky wicky
I recently got a small tattoo in honour or Athena. Nobody in my real life knows what that means so I thought this community would appreciate it. I also plan on getting a large Medusa tattoo in the future.
I still say "The Goose Girl" is the perfect messed up fairy tale to cover!!
your upload has blessed us l am forever greatfull
Wow this was an intense episode, I feel like Adonis had it really bad. Mhrrya if I spelled it right, is such a pretty name!!! Also, Gunther is such a cutie pie, just sleeping in Daddy's arms. ♥
Myrrha
Great artwork Jon! Love the paintings and sculptures. Thanks!
Can you do Oedipus. It's REALLY messed up, there's a lot of stuff happening so you just feel for Oedipus. The O is silent BTW.
I love that you have the painting from Goodfellas. That is one of my favorite movies ever!
the most handsome being is clearly gunther
thats what i said to
Tiffany Stewart oh sorry I didn’t see it, my apologies
@@pearheadperi no thats not what i mean
This was gold Jon, thanks
In our synagogues we invoke the name of 'Adonai' every week, and when you look at Asteroth and his role as consort of Asherah, the connection to Adonis is pretty obvious. I love these crazy stories... And if anyone knows how Adonai became one of the names of god, lmk, I've never been able to figure out how that got worked in like that.
Do you have any video about baba yaga I searched but didn't find anything . I really like your videos .
Love from Portugal
Quick note, Cupid is the Roman name of the god, his Greek name is Eros, which is where we get a few...shall we say, mature terms for a few things.
What are you implying? 😓
@@EmperorVegeta0204 I'm not implying anything, I was just pointing out an origin for some modern words.
He timed the smote gag perfectly, I said "smote" out loud right before he finally said it.
