Do it! Do it! (Love lives videos)
Jon, I'm an archeologist and historian... your presentations are awesome and hysterical. I swear, I wish you could make longer videos.
I just enjoy mythology 😮
( in general )
Thanks for what you do @roodbennet cause its people like you that get us this kind of information so we can have these videos from Jon Solo. If you don't mind me asking what region(s) are you studying?
@@taylortanner37 My area is prehistory to early modern era (16 th CE). I werk mostly Roman Republic and Empire eras. Thank you so much. 😊
@@roodbennett thats amazing ! I sew historically accurate clothing for everything from Renaissance faire folks , occasionally weddings , but mostly history museum exhibits. My eras are the fall of Rome on up to the Elizabethton era . Been working on gowns for different times during Aliénor d,Aquitaine. Hand stitching these bliuats and weaving the trim by hand is really making me thankful for my sewing machine but the client wants it made as authentic as possible.
@@taylortanner37 oh my god that is AMAZING 😍😍😍
Its funny how hades is painted as the bad brother when zeus and Poseidon both not only were horn dogs who committed adultery but also cursed and caused problems for so mamy people including humans and demi gods
Yeah but Zeus is definitely worse than Poseidon by miles.
Cause at least Poseidon doesn't leave you to the mercy of his spouse (who will either kill or torment you and possibly your child's life), and Poseidon does have some consensual relationships (like the og Greek version of him and Medusa, which is kinda sweet that he liked her even though she was a monster. Poseidon also doesn't assault Medusa; that was Neptune and Roman mythology is only inspired by Greek, it isn't the same thing).
He also sometimes gives divine favors like being a wingman and occasionally gives something useful/helpful/ or for survival, so at least you get something out of it if Poseidon bangs you (meanwhile Zeus doesn't leave you with many benefits other than a child and a angry spouse).
Not to mention there are some myths where Poseidon is reasonable (ex: In the Odyssey the Ares & Aphrodite myth where he has a agreement with Hephaestus to let them go).
TDLR: Basically Zeus f's with mortals and let's them deal with the consequences, but Poseidon is much tamer and merciful. Still not a good person. But Hades is definitely king.
I could write several entire essays on all the bad things Zeus has done.
@@iliketea1427 oh facts lol. Yo reading Greek mythology even made me want to take Zeus the hell out like kratos 🤣
@@iliketea1427 and Poseidon sexually assaulted Medusa
People are just scared of death
@@virgoqt13 facts. Death was deemed bad because it ends life but a lot of people see the peace in it
Jon, I'd love to see a Halloween video on the Greek mythological family of sorceresses: Circe, Pasiphae, Medea, and Ariadne.
I'm always here for more Ariadne content, Theseus did her so dirty!
@@Listening_Books12345 At least She upgraded in the process, going from lover of a hero to wife of a God, the Orphic God of the Mysteries and wild parties Dionysus.
I think instead of just doing a straightforward series about the gods' love affairs it would be neat to tie that into an explanation for how the moons of our Solar System's planets got their names. Looking at the moons of Jupiter, you have a laundry list of his lays.
Yes! The first recorded middle child! Seriously, I feel like Poseidon would be the guy who always say how cool he is but always gets angry over nothing.
Why?
Glad you clarified that the Medusa-Poseidon thing was a creation by Ovid. Since the "she was always a monster" interpretation is the earliest known version of her story, that's the one I tend to go with.
Me too
In the original version, Medusa had two sisters who were also gorgons, the only difference being the other two were immortal, while Medusa was not. The gorgons descended from Typhon and Echidna, the grandparents of many monsters, including the hydra and the chimera.
I love the theory Hades was an offshoot of Mycenaean Poseidon since he was a chthonic god back in the day, king of them all especially (granted Red from OSP theorized it but would make some sense)
I’m planning on researching that very theory for my masters program
@jessicaclakley3691 it'd be a good theory and maybe can be proved but it'll be hard
Yeah it’s cool lol
@marshalmarrs3269Demeter is goddess of agriculture so land supporter but the gods agreed that the land was for all of them to share and that Gaea was too powerful for one god to rule alone
@marshalmarrs3269
Land? Oh Gaia is the land no one rules the domain of land
I'd love to see that deep dive of Greek God love lives you mentioned. Seems like fascinating lore!
I've mentioned Hermaphroditus a few times in prior comments, and he is a pretty obscure figure in Greek mythology.
And on to some other materials.
I've mentioned a few times before, but it could be fun to see Jon cover the Aralez; the Aralez is a creature from Armenian mythology, and the briefest of summaries about it says that it's basically a flying doggo that descends from the heavens to revive fallen heroes.
Also, in a few prior comments, I have mentioned how it could be fun to see Jon do a ranking list for Hellhounds in a video for the Halloween season.
As someone who is writing a story where the main character learns about and summons various entities (spirits) from different mythologies, Armenian mythology has always sounded interesting.
Celtic gods could also be fun for Halloween.
I do not recall the source, but I recall reading a book about the Greek gods that claimed Zeus and Poseidon were once the same god and it was only when the cult of said god split and half settled on the sea that Poseidon became his own deity.
I'M SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED THE WHOLE OVID THING THANK YOU SO MUCH! Almost everyone says Medusa was SA'd by Poseidon and was just a cursed victim. Meanwhile it wasn't even Poseidon it was Neptune (remember it was written by a roman poet)! Poseidon did nothing to her and Greek and Roman mythology are not the same thing (while Roman myths may be based of Greek myths, that still doesn't change the fact they are not the same religion and were from different places and times).
And besides Ovid rewrote already existing greek myths to make the gods as unlikeable as possible (thats why we have the Athena, well really Minerva, as petty myths. Very un-characteristic to her character in other myth, making Ovids input inconsistant) because he had authority issues (I believe he got exiled and was feeling petty).
Also so glad you brought up the medusa was born a gorgon thing, cause the theogony is probably the oldest source we have of her, and it makes more sense (especially since it explains her gorgon sisters existence) and is less tragic that what Ovid wrote.
TDLR: Posedion didn't hurt Medusa, but thanks to Ovid Neptune did. A
Ovid is the real petty one.
"You defame me, I'll defame your gods" is a retaliation sure to backfire. 😂
@@shatteredreality_513 well his myths are now famous and people actually believe they are canon Greek mythology. Especially cause many hate Athena and Poseidon (instead of Ovid's Neptune and Minerva, people always use the wrong names) because of his myths. So Since Ovid's myths and himself are well known, his plan actually did the opposite of backfiring on him and had the intended effect (people not liking the gods).
It's a shame really, but I will still continue to dislike him. Maybe I'll start an anti-Ovid fanclub, just to knock his pedestal down a bit.
@iliketea1427 👀👏 we love to see classical antiquity scholars and even casual enjoyers digging up as much as they can on these authors (if everything isn't lost already of course) - not just as authors, but as people, and comparing them to reach the most accurate consensus on the myths they constructed.
@@shatteredreality_513
Well, you'll be pleased to know that Ovid *_did_* in fact utilize preexisting Greek sources when writing his _Metamorphoses,_ in particular the work of the earlier Hellenistic poet Nicander, confusingly also titled _Metamorphoses._ (Sourced from the fabulous book _The Routledge Handbook on Greek Mythology_ by Robin Hard.)
Seriously, it should be noted that Ovid only *published* his poem in AD 8 and that he'd been working on it for _years_ b4hand.
@ Jon Solo plz do that series about the gods' love lives! Looking forward to your Halloween stories too
I took a class in Greek mythology this summer and it seems to be a theme where parents tend to be more interested in their self preservation than being a parent
Love this series! I would love to also hear about the mythology of other countries... less well known ones! ❤❤❤
Any specific ones you want to see covered
@@mylesjude233 I have seen the greek and Norse videos and would love more from different Asian or African countries... some from the American countries would be awesome too! I just love history so I want to see it all lol

@@victorlarryesmenda2805 That would be awesome! I think I have only come across one myth and I can't really remember it anymore. Yess more of that please!
Gosh. This is Percy’s dad?😂
Yup. And yet Riordan made him a nice guy
@@kaiumeda6341 not really. He’s still a dick, just a toned down dick
This was superb. Poseidon is my favorite God and this was completely accurate and I got to learn about versions I didn't know existed. Keep up the good work man!
Could you make a video covering the gods of the indigenous Tainos? The Caribbean is full of culture that needs to be preserved with the help of educated people like you.
I agree on that ❤
I haven’t even had a chance to watch this video yet but I just saw it was up, and I don’t use this word more than a couple times a year, but YAAAASSSSSSSS
Excellent video! I particularly appreciated the focus on his relationship with Medusa.
Another curious transformation is the one he had with Astipalaea (Europe's sister), he took the form of a winged leopard with a fish tail. 😳
I SUPPORT THE IDEA!!! It would be very interesting to focus on the romantic lives of the different gods;
•Ares seems to have aspects in common with several of his companions (several are associated with war due to the meaning of their names) apart from the fact that he does not seem to have a Greek myth of rape.
•Hephaestus did not have many loves, but the few he did have are Very interesting, like Aetna (a volcanic Nymph), or Aglaea (the carite that won a beauty contest to Aphrodite).
•Apollo is one of the most bisexual. gods, and seems to do better with boys than girls.
•Aphrodite is not as promiscuous as one might expect (yes, she is the most promiscuous of the Olympian goddesses, but 3 of the 6 are virgins and Hera is monogamous); One could even address how “Virginity in the goddesses” seems to represent independence more than anything, Hestia, Artemis and Athena were not the only ones, the muses and Hecate were also called virgins and even so, children are associated with them, even Aphrodite and Hera seem to be able to restore it with a bath.
Yeah, there seems to be this big deal about virginity. That'd be an interesting deep dive. Why was it so important that goddesses had to represent it in some fashion? Now I'm intrigued 🤔
1. I didn't know about the alternate origin of Poseidon where he gets spared from Cronos before Zeus.
2. Yes, Minos did deserve his fate for gassing up Poseidon and then completely disregarding him after.
3. That (un) intentional semen pun would've had me subscribe to you if I hadn't been subscribed years prior.
4. Yes, we do need a continuation of Greek mythology from a messed-up love life perspective.
This looks to be a great video. Hope you plan on doing one on Dionysus in the future 😊
I think he has
@heatherturner2366 I just check the Greek mythology Playlist, he hasn't yet 😢
Yes we need one on Mr D
💙🔵
To clarify things very well.
Ichthyocentaurs have two equine legs and one/two serpentine tail/tails, Tritons and Nereids have two serpentine tails, Sirens/Mermaids (winged), Lamias and Gorgons have one serpentine tail.
17:48, thank you for actually saying it.
AHHHH! FINALLY POSEIDON! I've been waiting for this Day! Now, do take it Jon! Also, love this channel! And your videos! Especially the ones with mythology. I am a mythology nerd. 😂
😮 wow! It's crazy the things they don't teach you in the world history class. I mean 248 days a year and 13 years of formal education, and I STILL have learned more from @JonSolo than all those years combined.
18:11 Okay, is it just me, or does the baby minotaur look absolutely adorable?
I appreciate hearing the other versions of the stories.😊
I love the idea of doing the body count of the gods and goddesses! ❤🧮
Awesome. Posideon is one of my favorite Greek gods
Love your video, Jon Solo, and keep up the great work
Would you ever consider doing a deep dive of Pokémon like Gengar, Frostlass, Mawile and Shiftry?
I think poketubers would be a good resource for those. Since they're pokemon
This was *really, really, really* good.
I thought I knew a lot about Greek myths - but I learned so much from this. Stuff I either didn't know or connections I never made.
The amount of information you must have had to absorb is one thing, but the sheer mental acuity to create a narrative that lasted just 30 minutes - and managed to be cohesive and entertaining really needs to be remarked on. It's substantial scholarship.
Thank you so much for making this one. I’ve been dying to hear the history of Poseidon
24:34 - as far as I'm aware, there is no Classical depiction of Medusa having a snake's tail instead of legs (or at least I've never seen one), that was Echidna's thing until Harryhausen used it for Medusa in the original Clash of the Titans.
It's probably some modern interpretation of her, just like the made up feminist interpretation of her myth.
Then of course many people believe the interpretations without knowing/or seeing the actual source, like how people believe the SA is her Greek myth when it's not even close.
Love your content and have been following you forever!
Thanks for every video so far
Awesome as always thanks
I LOVE all of your content! Heck I have been following your work for years now. Your channel is by far one of the absolute best period, end of sentence. You make life more interesting. I would love to hear more about the offspring of Hades, please!!

Excellent video about Poseidon.
I know you've talked about Minos multiple times while talking about the Minotaur, but you should do an episode about Minos after he died and became a judge of the underworld
Yes so do the series it would tie everything together
the way i actually got an aquaman trailer ad after you made that joke....talk about timing.
1:52 forget that I’m tryna get a bread and mustache like that. Been watchin you for years never seen it look so smooth
Hiiii I love your videos, and I was just wondering when are you gonna do a video about Hades?
We'd love a series about the erotic shenanigans of the Olympians!
Oh yes love your videos
I enjoyed this video but I am surprised Nerites wasn't mentioned I mean he was beloved by Poseidon and although he isn't mentioned in many myths he is mentioned in two myths.
In the first version, Aphrodite, before her ascension from the sea to Olympus, fell in love with Nerites. When the time had come for her to join the Olympian gods, she wanted Nerites to go with her, but he refused, preferring to stay with his family in the sea. Even the fact that Aphrodite promised him a pair of wings did not make him change his mind. The scorned goddess then transformed him into a shellfish and gave the wings to her son Eros.
In the second version, Nerites was loved by Poseidon and answered his feelings. Their love was the origin of mutual love (Anteros). Poseidon also made Nerites his charioteer; the boy drove the chariot astonishingly fast, to the admiration of various sea creatures. Helios, for reasons unknown to Aelian's sources, changed Nerites into a shellfish; the narrative of the love-story is disrupted by Helios who is resentful of the boy's speed, but with no explanation behind it, allowing Aelian to conjecture that the two gods were rivals in love and Helios might have wanted the boy's affections for himself and was offended by his refusal.
I got this information off Wikipedia
Oh please do that video! It would definitely be a funny video to watch
Any clue when we're getting an origin for Dracula
Lets go jon solo
Couldn't help but laugh at the Bauldur's Gate reference, as I'm listening to this while playing it!
Jon's dry humor goes so well with wacky Greek mythology...
I really miss your intro music! My 5 year old has been a fan since he was 3! He always likes listening to your old videos for it since you changed it up lol
14:37 yo not the sound effects 🤣🤣
This channel is truly unique.
I'd love to see some videos on the other famous mortals and demigods from mythology! Jason and the Argonauts is a great story chocked full of famous heroes! And Orestes' story is one of the most brutal stories about the furies and how the ancient laws regarding family loyalty and duties can twist up an innocent man and force him into an impossible situation. It's also a continuation of Agamemnon's story post-Trojan war.
Up late and excited

Hi Jon Solo, I love your videos, and I was wondering if you could explore Bornholm's Mysterious Legends and Folklore, Bornholm is a small island in Denmark and I thought it might be fun to hear about Bornholm Mythology, Legends and Folklore. This is just a bit of Bornholm, there are many more Mysterious Legends Mythology and Folklore
The island of Bornholm, located in the Baltic Sea off the coast of eastern Denmark, is a place of mysterious legends and folklore. Over the centuries, stories have been passed down from generation to generation of locals, giving insight into the mystifying nature of this small island.
One of the most prominent legends of Bornholm is that of the Giant of Hammershus. According to this legend, a giant lived in the ruins of Hammershus Castle, which is located on the northern tip of the island. This giant was said to be so large that he could easily pick up a cow and throw it over the castle walls. He was also said to have a magical staff that he used to guard the castle and its inhabitants.
Another one is the Night Riders. These mysterious riders were said to appear in the night and ride around the island on horseback. They were said to be the ghosts of knights who had died in battle centuries ago, and they were searching for their lost souls.
The island of Bornholm is also home to numerous tales of magical creatures. One of these creatures is the Troll of Hammershus, a giant troll that was said to live in the castle’s ruins. He was said to have the power to turn people into stone if they didn’t obey his orders. Other tales of magical creatures include the Mermaid of the Oresund, the Dragon of Bornholm, and the Ghost of Hammershus.
Another interesting legend is the Devil’s Footprint, a rock formation located on the Danish island of Bornholm. It is an oval-shaped rock, measuring around 5 meters in length, with a deep print on the top. The myth states that the Devil himself stomped his foot on the rock, leaving behind the footprint. The Devil’s Footprint is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.

Thank you, Now the Greek holy trinity is finished, who’s left now though?
From the Olympians, only Dionysus is. However there are plenty of major non-Olympian deities that could also be covered after him as well. There are also heroes and specific myths that could be covered.
