    You know, considering Rick Riordan warned Fox repeatedly that all of their nonsensical changes from the books would make the fans hate the movies and he got booted off both projects only to turn out to be 100% right I think I understand why Disney agreed to let him work on the Disney+ show.

      Yeah, sadly i still have no faith in the disney+ adaptation.
      Ive check any google search on their cast and if the appearance from books to adaptation a pet peeved of yours, once again we're gonna get dissapointed in that area. Anyone you love in the book is beyond unrecognisable.
      I believe the cast is all on Disney, cause theres no way Rick who cares about his work would do this to himself and his fans THE SECOND TIME...
      So yeah, once the trailer drops just to double check if what was reported to be true about the cast. Im just gonna give up on ever seeing the percy jackson i know and love on the big screen.
      (Im not american nor white. I wanna add that before someone start talking about race.., but this shit is getting on my nerve. Other people from all over the globe read and grew up on this book too. All we wanted was a good adaptation and characters we love from the book literally coming to life. @@bigfellowjamarcus6271 I don’t mind the casting choices I’ve seen. I’ve seen people object to Annabeth being played by a black actor, which I’m assuming was something you objected to since you mentioned race specifically. So I’ll offer another perspective that might help. I really liked that Annabeth in the books was a blonde girl because at the time there were all these jokes and stereotypes about the “blonde bimbo”. Annabeth existing as herself in the books was a challenge to those misogynistic stereotypes since she was so intelligent, wise, and competent. There are even moments in the series where characters underestimate Annabeth because of her appearance, and she even plays into that to her advantage. That’s part of why she meant so much to many girls who read the books and why so many were so bothered by the actor in the movies having the wrong hair colour, even though it was such a minor deviation. Those stereotypes aren’t so common these days though. However, due to racist and misogynistic stereotypes many people underestimate black girls in similar ways. And while a black actor doesn’t reflect the physical appearance of the character in the books, I think the casting choice does more accurately reflect the way Annabeth’s character challenges misogynistic stereotypes. So in that way you could see the deviation from the character’s appearance as remaining more true to the characterisation now that society has changed.
      Personally, I’m just glad the actors are appropriate ages. Apparently their acting and personalities really suit the characters too, and that’s very important. It can be hard to find good child actors and Rick seems to think they’ve succeeded at that.
      I don’t think anything will compare to how I imagined things in the books, and I already have the books, so that’s another reason I don’t care too much if details differ so long as it stays spiritually true to the books. With Rick working on the project closely I’m sure any deviations from the book will still be true to Rick’s style and what we love about his stories.
      Maybe you still won’t see it the same way, but hopefully this’ll help you see it from another perspective and make you more comfortable giving the tv series a chance.

    Spoilers for the original series: It seems so small when talking about all the changes but to be completely honest the fact that everyone just knew who Percy's dad was and that he never had to stay in the Hermes cabin actually is the most significant change between the book and the movie because of its implications for the motivations of each character. The driving force behind Luke's betrayal is because of the poor and uncaring treatment of the other demigods and his failure in his old quest which allowed him to be bitter enough to be convinced by Kronos to try and take over. This theme is explored through all of the books and comes to fruition after the main war were Percy denies immortality as his reward in order to challenge the gods to give a shit and try to prevent another Luke from happening. This movie made it impossible to actually continue on with the whole series and ruined Lukes motivations and how he and Percy are foils to each other.

    Admittedly, Percy is not always the most logical character but as a TWELVE year old boy in the first book with some pent up anger his idea to send Medusa’s head is more out of spite than anything else. Now, my memory of the series is rusty but I’m sure even Annabeth at least pointed out how bad of an idea that was. Percy didn’t care - it was essentially his way of flipping them off (apart of a LONG list of times where he somehow manages to get away with telling off the Greek gods without being killed on the spot).

    • @cas2762
      @cas2762 9 месяцев назад +63

      I also remember Annabeth telling him it’s a very bad idea. But again, Percy is a twelve years old boy who just lost his mother, like, a week ago. He’s angry at the gods, and that’s actually a similarity between him and Luke that I really enjoyed: they’re pissed at the gods. They suffered because of the gods’ carelessness. They are both angry, but Percy uses it to flip the gods off, and Luke goes to try and kill them.

      @@chronic_hatred2k22 Using a cell phone for communication is extremely dangerous because monsters are attracted to demigod voices being sent through the air using cell phones. This was the result of a spell cast by Lamia, a daughter of Hecate who had her children killed by Hera and transformed into a monster by the goddess. As a result, most demigods communicate via Iris Messaging which monsters cannot detect or track.

    • @bagel5056

      @@chronic_hatred2k22Aight it’s been a long time and someone correct me if I get some small details wrong
      But basically in a side story, it was revealed that a monster had essentially cursed demigods to be more trackable if they used any form of electronic technology. Example: Using a phone signals to monsters where you are. In the event a demigod has to use a phone in the story, they usually have to drop it and leave the location quickly afterwards
      Which makes sense as Percy Jackson takes place in modern times and the mythological world Rick Riordan wrote evolved along with the times. Everyone uses electronic technology nowadays = makes it super easier for monsters to find and kill demigods

They'd shot themselves in the foot with the first one, so they wouldn't be able to make a faithful adaptation without throwing the others out. With that in mind, it was obvious that the second was going to be the last one, so they tried to pull a "Phantom planet" and get in as much as they wanted to before ending it:
      The hero saved his friends, got his leading lady, and lived happily ever after.
      The villain lost everything, and was left alone to suffer a horrible fate.
      And the relative who came back to help in the end is just kinda sat there while the next step in their life is pretty much left to the imagination.

    11:57 ngl I totally read his motivations in the book as only saving his mom (and I didn't watch the movie before). Kind of goes with the whole loyalty is his fatal flaw thing (which I still kind of find it stupid but yk it checks out if you see that he's usually trying to save someone when he gets into trouble/is the entire quest like Annabeth and Nico). I also liked that more because it was different. Usually the hero is selfless but it makes Percy more relatable if his motivation was his mom, not some other bs that he's not really involved in and has no other attachment to these people, especially Poseidon. I mean if you're a 12 year old who just lost their mom and knew you could get her back, well of course you'd want to. It was more like a secret motivation that he didn't tell anyone and just told them whatever they wanted to hear

    I admire your patience to willingly put yourself through the horrendous torture that is watching this movie. I hate how in the movies Persephone is even IN the Underworld. Persephone is only in the Underworld during wintertime. This book takes place around the end of the school year, so it's summertime. Therefore, Persephone shouldn't even be in the Underworld. The movie also reduces the stakes of the plot line SO much. In the books we're constantly reminded of how little time the characters have left, which builds up tension as to how the book will end. The movies also make Percy a lot more stupid. Perry Johnson is always told everything by his father which is SO frustrating, because even though Percy isn't a genius like Annabeth, he has enough common sense to figure out some things on his own (i.e., how the water seems to heal him, how Ares was the saboteur, which ride at the water park Ares left his shield on, etc.)
    I lost all the respect I had for Chris Columbus when I read the summary and learnt of the plot of this movie (as I've never committed to watching that atrocious garbage). I hope the Disney+ series is lightyears better than this abysmal failure and insult to the film industry.

When I found out they were based on books I was ecstatic and eagerly ran to my local book store to purchase them-with my own money, which wasn’t much as I got paid $5 allowance a week. At home, I made myself some popcorn, curled up on the sofa with a blanket five times bigger than I was, and cracked open the first of my new books, reading half of it all in one sitting. The further I got in the book, the more soured my opinion of the film became, to the point where I felt resentment and embarrassment for even enjoying the movies at all. How could I have been cheated so badly out of such a wonderful story for so long? I never completed the Percy Jackson series, though I owned the first two books. There was a tear in my heart left by the movies that the goodness of the first book could not repair, so I moved on. Later, I decided to read the Norse Mythology books featuring Magnus Chase, enjoying them very thoroughly! Maybe one day I will return to the original books, but I don’t know if I’ll ever have the heart to.

    One thing that's not even mentioned in this video is that from the museum incident up until the end of the school year Grover and Mr.Bruner/Chiron literally use the most and keep everything happening a secret from Percy and he'd essentially gaslit into believing everything at the museum never happened. And it stays this way until Percy goes to ask for help with his Latin homework when studying for a test but then overhears Grover and Chiron's worried conversation and sees Chiron's strange shadow. Then on the bus ride back home(he was also at a boarding school btw. It was another way his mom tried to protect him from the monsters.) He gets Grover to slip up a little about the museum trip and then continues to figure more out about everything throughout the camping trip and moving forward.
    Also: The Gabe smelling bad being a protection against monsters was true to the books, however like it was pointed out, in the books, Gabe wasn't really physical with Percy, only Sally(Percy's mom) behind closed doors. And Percy didn't know until she admitted it.

    I can't agree with this video more. I remember reading the first Percy Jackson series and going to see it in the theater. I was so excited for this movie and I will never forget the rage I felt coming out of the theater afterwards. It was the absolute worst. I couldn't hate it more😂 and I remember telling myself if they had gone with the book and did what was done with the Harry Potter series, it would've been a hit.
    That movie didn't need to appeal to adults, the books weren't written for them. He absolutely destroyed that movie's potential.
    With that said, I can't wait for the series knowing Rick Riordan is working on it with the team.

    I LOVE the book series. Rick Riordan is one of my favorite writers. I was so disappointed in the movies because I was so exited about them when I heard they were going to make them. But then they changed it to the point were you can't even recognize the story. Many things are not logical. The things I liked about the books they either changed or left out. One of my favorite details about the camp was the cabins. The fact that Hera and Artemis had their own cabin because even thought they didn't have any demigod kids you couldn't just not give them their spot at the camp or how so many times the gods didn't bother to claim their kids they were just stuffed in the Hermes cabin. It shows the uncaring nature of the gods in general towards their (many, many) children.

    Also, you might consider doing videos about Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe. She does put her own spin on the myths. You mentioned Lore Olympus in your video about Apollo, might make sense if you expand on that. It might even be worth mentioning the controversy that arose because of Apollo's depiction in LO, it led to actual worshipers of Apollo getting attacked in mistreated because some people thought that the original Apollo from the myths and Lore Olympus Apollo were the same. Other than that, you can also mention both the similarities and differences Lore Olympus has with the myths.

    I read the whole series a long time ago, and even recommended it to a student in my placement and she loved it. But now I’ve wanted to reread it again. There was also something I wanted to say in a review done by the Mythology guy that I found it odd that the camp isn’t a summer camp and instead is a training ground for some reason.

    i’m mad they changed how percy finds out luke is the lightning theft. the original scene was so emotional as him and percy are having a brotherly conversation and luke reveals to percy that he is the lightning theft then has the scorpion poison him. Then when annabeth finds out about luke’s betrayal basically finds out her brother is evil. the movie ruined that with luke just straight up being like “oh yeah btw i’m the lightning theft” then they battle on top of a building.

    Considering the mess Disney made of "Artemis Fowl" (which is perfectly watchable if you don't know the source material and horrific if you do) I'm a bit sceptical as to how they're going to adapt Percy Jackson. When it came to Artemis Fowl, I had the privilage to meet the director, Kenneth Branagh, at an event (I'm from Belfast Northern Ireland and he is too) and specifically asked him about Artemis Fowl and he said it was book acurate.... Fast forward several years and I can reliably say my "bum flap".
    Thinking about it, it would be a good scene by scene comparison video as well, though it would require reading the first two books as the movie covers the plot of both "Artemis Fowl" and "Artemis Fowl: The Artic Incident".

And They better not touch nico! if Disney so much as thinks about removing anything from his character or any of the diverse characters I will throw hands!

    • @alexawatchingyoutube
      @alexawatchingyoutube Год назад +6

      I think they’ll do a much better job with Percy Jackson, especially considering how please Rick Riordan seems about the process so far. Artemis Fowl had a lot of issues behind the scenes, including the fact that Disney had been trying to make it a film for nearly 15 years prior to the release and they were never able to execute it. They were likely just eager to push out a film and figured the books were older and no one would care, and I don’t think the author had much to do with the film, either, since the rights were purchased by Disney around 2005.

    As someone who has read all of the Percy Jackson and Heroes Of Olympus books, the second this movie started I was pissed. A huge plot point of the books is that Cronus needs Percy (or a child of the big 3) to be 16, so it’s a slow ageing all the way up to book 5. But when the movie starts and they’re already that age… that’s just rude

    • @alexawatchingyoutube
      @alexawatchingyoutube Год назад +5

      I think in the second film they tried to help this by saying the child needed to be 21, but it still ruins a lot of the character development because part of what makes this series so charming is the fact that these kids are /kids/ and not older teens or adults, and part of the journey is watching them grow up along with these quests and godly issues

    The reason Annabeth freezes at aunty m's is that she has a fear of seemingly anything her mom made. And guess who cursed Medusa into her current form.
    Also, my cousin and I were talking about Percy Jackson just last week and, he having just rewatched them, being 11, curious, and never reading any of the books, wondered why everyone hated the movies. I basically broke down the differences and told him how they condensed the Kronos plot from 4 books (I'm not counting the lightning thief) to basically the 3rd act of the 2nd movie.

    In all fairness, Poseidon did have a good reason for distancing himself from Percy. After the Oracle gave the Big Three prophecy, Zeus' first plan of action was to throw a lightning bolt at Hades' lover and their roughly ten and eleven year old kids, resulting in their mom's death.
    It's also stated several times throughout the series that the gods' ability to assist their children is limited, although who and how this is enforced is less clear.
