Jon, your defense of Hera is great. She was a goddess of fidelity in a world of horn-dogs. She is vilified for rebelling (albeit violently) against the vow-ignoring faithless norms of the times (and, ironically these times). Her Roman counterpart - Juno - is much more of a revered mother figure than a mad avenging goddess. Consider the legions of moms, brides, & cheated-on wives & husbands who prayed to her. She represented order in a world of sex-inspired chaos. Hera may not have been cool and was often a drag, but she represented a security and bond that Grecian society felt it needed in the big picture.

Vikings are just Nordic pirates. Nords were the culture. All Vikings are norse but not all nords are Vikings. Viking isn't a race or culture, though modern day media and Hollywood doesn't correct this misunderstanding.
I know that Viking isnt the culture. Thats not what i was saying. I was saying i would thoroughly enjoy seeing several vids by Jon about nordic culture. Including their mythology, vikings and more.
@@kayleenicole1667 i agree, but I'd rather on the Norse mythology rather than on Vikings. There's other channels that cover Vikings. But not much on mythology. This is a rare gem of a channel.

Most people tend to gloss over the fact that Hera also presided over empires, thrones, and royals
Seriously the excitement I feel whenever I get these notifications-
I think you gave Hera justice. She’s one of my top fav Greek goddess’
I was annoyed not to be notified, but realized I turned off the bell so joke's on me.
I love how you used SMITE Hera images. From what I heard also, Hephaestus was the one who unchained his Mom and that was the only time she was nice to her son. This is why I only like Artemis and Hades.

Dang, I feel sorry for Hera now. I always wondered why she always took her anger out on Zeus' children instead of Zeus himself. Now I know better. I know she damn well tried, but now she's powerless against him. The only thing that makes her feel like she has any control of her situation at all is attacking his lovers and illegitimate children.
Never heard of Zeus raped her. The way I heard it when she said I love you to the bird he turned back into himself and said ha now you got to marry me. Or something like that.
Probably a candy-coated version. That happens a lot.
It was in High School Literature
Honestly the bird part is still rape cause she didn't know it was a person.
@@fae69s Rape is the act of forcing sexual intercourse on an unwilling person. Disguising oneself is deceit, not rape.
Up until this I thought Zeus was crap for the cheating and deceitfulness but at least he didn’t rape like Poseidon but yeaaahhh I guess he did.
I used to hate Hera and was confused by her wrath. As I've gotten older though, I come back to her a lot... with great understanding.

Gunther deserves it just for sticking out his tongue on cue! Greek mythology has fascinated me since elementary school when I had my first exposure to it, and this is one of the best descriptions of Hera that I've ever heard. This is why I'm permanently subscribed to your channel!
“He proposed to Hera for over 300 years, getting rejected everytime.”
simp alert
Funnily enough, this is a misconception. There is no evidence that Hera ever refused Zeus, quite the contrary. Multiple ancient sources suggest that they hooked up long before they got married and that they kept the relationship secret. In fact, the 300 years thing is a reference to exactly that.
@Cher rachia Vinson
Do I? That is news for me.
@@omniavanitas7893 that wouldn’t make sense because she would’ve married him. She marries him because he stained her virginity.
@@MoJones9919 So that doesn't make sense, but Hera marrying the man who raped her even though she had the ability to renew her virginity any time she wanted by simply taking a bath in the spring of Kanathos does? Even if she couldn't do that, who would have even known whether she was still a virgin or not? Who would have cared?
@@omniavanitas7893 well that was the times.women were shamed for sex outside of union, even if they were attacked. Him tricking her and then raping her would (periodically speaking) make her feel terrible and marry him. It still happens today in India today.
“...as if it were one of Zeus’s lovers, and, honestly it might have been...” I freaking spit out my tea! 🤣
I ACTUALLY SNORTLAUGHED! I ADORE Jon's commentary!
"She wasn't into Zues and not only because she was his sister" excuse me HWAT

It’s best not to look at Greek mythology like how we look at our lives

Everybody gangsta until you learn Zeus and Hera are siblings
Jon, I painted the picture at 5:46! Thank you for featuring!
I was always puzzled by Hera considering her negative portrayal in the myths, however she was one of the most widely worshiped of the Greek Divines, so the real life people loved her. Then one day I stumbled upon a playlist where someone attributed popular songs to the various Olympians. It was rubbish, so I devised my own. The song that seemed to fit Hera actually changed my view of her, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. If you doubt me, then listen to the song while thinking of Hera and you might see it too.

She’s the goddess of marriage, getting a divorce for any reason would make her subject to constant criticism for the rest of her life and she’s not capable of dying so she would pretty much have no way to get away from it, not to mention her own personal viewpoint that getting divorce for any reason is wrong

You know, I've been reading Greek Mythology for 20 years, and still when you hear several stories at once like this I'm still surprised.
I never blamed Hera one bit for being vindictive against Zeus in whatever way she could. Who would be able to go through her ordeal and stay sane.
I think Hera is where the "evil stepmother" trope came from.
I like that you used Smite Hera artwork. 😍
yes! most of greek myths reflect society’s views back then. Hera’s villianization just proves the misogyny that was prevalent at the time. she was villianized for being rightfully angry at Zeus for cheating. most villians in these myths seem to be women, the female deities always seem to be lesser than or have atleast on male counterpart that is stronger than them.
She's rightfully angry, sure. But punishing the children just seems wrong. They didn't ask to be born, and having a goddess that hates them from the day they're born doesnt help
Not even done with the video but this is the one I've been waiting for!!

glottle i know i share the same feeling trust me, per example Athena has children, like whaaat. But it was all a joke, didn’t mean to offend or something, just that it’s the “only” modern narrative where Zeus has children.
