I have a Pegasus tattoo because my dad was called the flying jockey (trucker thing) because one of the trucks he drove had a Pegasus on it. The Greeks had very strange ways of creating beings and their births ,such crazy imaginations 😂 great video

Oh my word! As you spoke, I kept thinking I’d heard this before, and I have! One of my literature courses actually went over Pegasus and Bellerophon’s story! I remember making Perusall comments about being so surprised about the horse being Medusa’s kid and Bellerophon being taken a pass at just like Moses was. It was just as cool a story the second time around, but being entertaining and educating is always what you deliver.

Medusa's story is so tragic :( I actually like her so much more now. She was literally minding her own business and ends up getting r*ped by Poseidon. These gods are horrible. I hate Athena for cursing Medusa too, it wasn't Medusa's fault. The version of the story prior to the romans trying to slander the greek gods had all the same story beats, but with much different intentions.

It's not false, nor is it a misconception. For one thing, Medusa was born a gorgon in Greek mythology, she was not raped and Athene did not curse or gift her anything. What Athene did was help Perseus kill Medusa. The popular story in which Medusa was a mortal woman raped and transformed into a monster is a Roman story created by Ovid. A simple read of Ovid's Metamorphoses would make it more than clear that Minerva did not have the well-being of Medusa in mind when she cursed her because Minerva, like every other god in Ovid's work, was a huge, awful dickhead.

Am I the only one surprised that he didn’t mention that Medusa originally being human is only Ovid’s rendition of her story? Other poets describe her as a monster since birth, which makes sense as she’s one of three gorgon sisters, which wouldn’t really make sense if she was born human.

I don't know there are various versions of the story. There are versions where Perseus was given gifts from the gods instead of the nymphs to kill Medusa, the sword from Zeus, the sandals from Hermes, and the shield from Athena. If Athena wanted to help her by cursing her why would she contribute to helping Perseus kill her? Athena gave him the shield which in turn helped him kill Medusa.
Contrary to what some people think, there is no version where Athena did it protect her. Also, if that were the case, why would she later on send Perseus on a quest to kill her if she actually wanted to protect her?
There's a little known cartoon just called "Pegasus" from about 1990 that is probably the closest to a (semi-kid friendly) origin and story of Pegasus. It was my introduction to the horse as a kid. Worth checking out if it interests you!
I always felt so horrible for Medusa. There is a theory floating around that Athena cursed her in order to protect her from other men in pity for her assault. She turned Medusa into a gorgon in order to keep the other gods and goddesses off her back for obvious reasons, and gave Medusa the power to take out her revenge on men.

I hadn’t heard of this until I listened to the parcast network mythologies podcast episode on Bellerophon a while ago and had been looking forward to Jon’s telling of it, so well done my dude!
I love the messed mythology series! Have you thought about the Egyptian gods I mean Sekmet is a lion headed goddess that only stopped slaughtering humans by her dad getting her drunk. That's messed up🤔

I read somewhere that Athena wanted to protect Medusa, yet she had to be careful to not offend Poseidon. So she turned Medusa so it would look like a punishment, but she could actually defend herself and keep tending to the temple.

1. Big fan of your videos, mythology was a giant part of my childhood, and being able to listen to your videos while doing homework n stuff has been great. 2. Medusa was not punished, Athena was angry at Poseidon, and gifted medusa the power to make sure she never suffered such a trauma again. It was a gift, not a punishment. I felt the need to correct, as it’s a common misconception that medusa was punished, but that doesn’t change that it’s false
You should watch his medusa vid, he goes over that, I'm guessing he called it a punishment so that the newer viewers wouldn't be thrown for a loop and he could move on into the myth
It's not false, nor is it a misconception. For one thing, Medusa was born a gorgon in Greek mythology, she was not raped and Athene did not curse or gift her anything. What Athene did was help Perseus kill Medusa.
The popular story in which Medusa was a mortal woman raped and transformed into a monster is a Roman story created by Ovid. A simple read of Ovid's Metamorphoses would make it more than clear that Minerva did not have the well-being of Medusa in mind when she cursed her because Minerva, like every other god in Ovid's work, was a huge, awful dickhead.

@@Teddy-wd3ro in most versions medusa was born a gorgon so DON'T call gods especially the goddess of wisdom dumb. Plus being a gorgon helped her from not getting touched by men ever again

Am I the only one surprised that he didn’t mention that Medusa originally being human is only Ovid’s rendition of her story? Other poets describe her as a monster since birth, which makes sense as she’s one of three gorgon sisters, which wouldn’t really make sense if she was born human.

I don't know there are various versions of the story. There are versions where Perseus was given gifts from the gods instead of the nymphs to kill Medusa, the sword from Zeus, the sandals from Hermes, and the shield from Athena. If Athena wanted to help her by cursing her why would she contribute to helping Perseus kill her? Athena gave him the shield which in turn helped him kill Medusa.
Contrary to what some people think, there is no version where Athena did it protect her. Also, if that were the case, why would she later on send Perseus on a quest to kill her if she actually wanted to protect her?

There's a little known cartoon just called "Pegasus" from about 1990 that is probably the closest to a (semi-kid friendly) origin and story of Pegasus. It was my introduction to the horse as a kid. Worth checking out if it interests you!

I always felt so horrible for Medusa. There is a theory floating around that Athena cursed her in order to protect her from other men in pity for her assault. She turned Medusa into a gorgon in order to keep the other gods and goddesses off her back for obvious reasons, and gave Medusa the power to take out her revenge on men.
