Does anyone else see parallels between Eros and psyche, and Beauty and the Beast? Father gives his daughter to a supposedly hideous monster daughter ends up visiting with her sisters the trick her, and also said daughter falls in love with the "monster"
The story of Eros and Psyche is indeed considered to be one of the earliest versions of the Beauty and the Beast archetype (aka Aarne-Thompson type 425C)
Three things worth noting: 1. It’s incredibly ironic that Zeus so often uses marriage to bind people and make them better when he so often cheats on his own wife and ignore their marriage. 2. In the versions of this myth I’ve heard, Psyche was actually pregnant when the incident with the hot wax happened, so she did all four of those tasks while pregnant!! 3. It seems pretty clear that this myth is what inspired Beauty and the Beast, which I just think is worth mentioning especially given the nature of MUO. Great video overall John! Yes she was heavily pregnant with a Gods child. She may have been pregnant for a year or two. And Eros lied to Psyche so she would LOVE him and not the god.
Beauty and the Beast is actually based of a true story where a French noble journeyed to the America's and found a beast boy aka a boy with the werewolf like disease that causes a person to grow excess hair all over his body. He took the boy home, educated him, and married him to another noble who at first was horrified by her husband's appearance but later fell in love because of his genuine good nature. i thought that a few times as well, but it’s a little different than the traditional “beauty and the beast” archetype because she only believes him to be that for a short while. otherwise I would have mentioned it
A few notes: - In addition to his iconic weapon, Eros was also frequently depicted carrying a torch. - I always liked to think that the oracle's description of Eros as a loathsome winged serpent is a result of Apollo still being angry about the Daphne debacle. - Speaking of Lucian (author of 'The Golden Ass'), Eros' depiction in his 'Dialogues of the Gods' tend to pretty amusing as well.

The incident from Cinderella about the grains that he mentioned. Sleeping beauty, because she opened the box and slept, Eros then found her, plucked off the sleep from her and awoke her. Then the labours reminded me of Rumplestiltskin. And Bluebeard because, Aphrodite asked her to bring the box but Psyche opened it.

I kept waiting for The Part Where It All Goes Wrong, and it never came - I thought the Sleep of Hades was going to be the end of it, I was so sure! Wow…what a lovely tale to soothe me in preparation for yet another Valentine's Day spent a continent away from my beloved… (No, he's not a soldier, it's just a long-distance thing.)

I got so excited cause I just knew you would tell the story of the 4 hard tasks she had to go through, my 7thgrade detention teacher told me the story and I fell in love with it I was just thinking about it 2 nights ago!
Wow great work Jon Solo that's was the best episode I've ever watched. There were so many parts to the story of cupids and love and gods. All these stories are connected without u I would have never known this wonderful knowledge. Cheers and thank you for being the best English teacher ever. Your fan Dan :)
this dynamic is also used in the loose rendition of a Beauty and the Beast tale-type East of the Sun and West of the Moon, which basically uses this myth as a basis for the story, but falls into the tale-type because by day, the prince is a white bear.
Tbh I thought you'd say "Psyche accidentally spilled/poured the oil on his face causing him to be blind, thus the story of" love is blind"" bc I honestly thought it was that story lol. Also gotta tell you this but my nephew really enjoyed watching this (with me) bc it was entertaining and everything (his words lol)
One of the Erotes was on "Legacies" a couple weeks ago! Since you like going into the origin stories of characters in anthology-type shows like "Once Upon a Time," "Legacies" would also be a good one to go into. Every episode this season features a different monster from myths and legends of different cultures.
Psyche is every classic Disney Princess. - Sent to a Beast by her father, only to fall in love with with him. - Calls upon animals to help with an impossible sorting task. - Falls into the sleep of Hades after opening a box supposed to contain beauty, and must be rescued by her true love. Surprised that he only mentioned the Cinderella connection.

Yooo 😭😂😂
Thank you for clarification. I always tought Amor was the greek god of love and Eros was a god of physical love in form of the act.
That is my favorite myth.. it's so beautiful!
Wow a happy ending in Greek mythology. Never thought I'd see the day.
Could it be possible that Aphrodite’s son could be an avatar of the primordial Eros? Or named after him?
I got so excited cause I just knew you would tell the story of the 4 hard tasks she had to go through, my 7thgrade detention teacher told me the story and I fell in love with it I was just thinking about it 2 nights ago!
This one was interesting. I enjoyed the origins of cupid. Thanks
Great video man.
8:08 lmfaooo I just made am unexplainable noise at this RiceGum's gonna drop a diss track in you lolll
Thank you for hardwork in your videos. It's a pleasure to watch/learn. Keep up the good work 😃
You forgot Cupid's admonition to Psyche: Love and fear cannot exist together.
Who knew that Jon’s monotone voice gimmick is one of the best things about his videos?
8:08 Jon got smoke with ricegum 😂😂😂😂
Wow great work Jon Solo that's was the best episode I've ever watched. There were so many parts to the story of cupids and love and gods. All these stories are connected without u I would have never known this wonderful knowledge. Cheers and thank you for being the best English teacher ever. Your fan Dan :)
At least you're honest about capitalism.
Oh c'mon
this dynamic is also used in the loose rendition of a Beauty and the Beast tale-type East of the Sun and West of the Moon, which basically uses this myth as a basis for the story, but falls into the tale-type because by day, the prince is a white bear.
Tbh I thought you'd say "Psyche accidentally spilled/poured the oil on his face causing him to be blind, thus the story of" love is blind"" bc I honestly thought it was that story lol.
Also gotta tell you this but my nephew really enjoyed watching this (with me) bc it was entertaining and everything (his words lol)
this is a late comment but eros is often portrayed with a blindfold which does mean love is blind.
So many connections with other stories that are totally different. Thank you for another interesting messed up origins. 👍💯
“The most detestable human being on the planet”
**puts picture of Ricegum on screen**
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Jon, thanks for another wonderful episode again!
Also wanted to say I'd love to see a video on two mythological horses, Pegasus and Arion. A Bellerophon episode would be awesome too ^^
Take care!
