I bought one prompted by your earlier review of it. It turned out to be a good runner for my branch line smallish layout. No big loads required, no hills, and a quiet runner, which I really like.
Nice little model, but it definitely looks better in L&Y livery (one of the rare instances where black is a good livery). I really liked the Class 5 when I saw it at the Railway Museum.
yep got it, its run in on myflat layour with 3rd rad curves 4lit pulman coaches caused a lot of whee lsli p so schools wellington has taken over, might try it with 2 57 foot lms coaches, eventually will get some of the new 4 and 6 wheel heritage coaches
My mate got a Tango O2, I told him to send it back because they are rubbish. He said “No, it’s Heljan, they are great with locos”. And I just got an Email from him saying it is rubbish and he is going to send it back.
Haha! Sometimes you have to let people find out for themselves - at least he knows what he’s talking about though, to spot that it was in fact rubbish! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
About 20 years ago I built a NuCast kit of the Belpaire boiler version, as its white metal it weighs a lot and it has the leading and trailing trucks just floating along. This puts all the weight on the drivers as a result it will pull a good load of coaches.
@@SamsTrains I havent got any videos unfortunately I recently converted my layout to DCC and I havent got round to chipping the loco yet. Funds are a bit tight after buying 15 chips :-)
An excellent review of a very nice locomotive. These engines were used by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on express trains and had water pick up apparatus which allowed them to take water running both forwards and in reverse. One is preserved in York Museum. I have bought one for my collection.
I came back to watch this because I pre-ordered when I saw it on the rails website some time ago (I was ordering the Presidents and 812s I think). I had already bought the black LMS version. Rails wrote to me aobut 6 weeks ago to say that the price was going up and was I ok with this. I said I was but a week later I found this crimson version in my storage! I couldn't beleive I already had it, so I cancelled my pre-order. I have written a data base for a model railway collection but I haven't put my own stock into it yet and this is the result!
Now I actually have one of these and I see it is not just me with the pickup issues. I find it can stutter a bit from cold but after a bit of running it can just creap along with no problem. Of course if I clean the wheels and track it goes perfectly. Interesting about pulling power as I have had mine pulling 18 coal wagons with no problem.
Sorry to hear you have that too Ian - I think they needed a bit of clever pick-up design with this one, which sadly they didn't deliver! haha - your trackwork must be much better designed than mine is then ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam really enjoy your videos. I have one of these but its the locomotion special edition of the one in the nrm 1008. Mine doesn't have sprung buffers though 🤔
Thanks very much David - ooh that sounds fantastic! I wonder if it's prototypical for that version not to have sprung buffers? ?:D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks so much Stewart! I've never had any experience with their N gauge motors, but if they're anything like Bachmann's, don't put any oil on the brush end of the motor (the end the wires are connected to) - and that should keep them in good shape! Also, running-in is essential with them before loading them up with rolling stock! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks very much mate - I really do love these ones too! I'm not too sure actually - I wouldn't have thought they'd be super fast for that era... my guess would be 60-70mph max?? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice video Sam. VERY INTERESTING INFORMATIVE. I think two early crest B R BLACK based at Manningham BRADFORD would suit me just fine. Subject to being passed by the locomotive committee ( MY WIFE) 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I did not know how old the locomotive was. Great review Sam . Happy Christmas.
Looks fantastic! Shame about the slow running though. If you're paying the high price for the newer versions you'd hope that wouldn't be the case on those examples
The cylinders on the prototype are pretty much directly under the smokebox between the 2 front wheels. I'm not sure, but it looked like they weren't included on your model (although to see them even on the prototype you'd have to get down on your hands and knees in front of the loco...) Anyway, I loved this video! The Class 5 tank is probably my favorite Brittish locomotive. Too bad about the high price, though.
Ahh very interesting John, thanks for this - I'll definitely try and find some material on that! Glad you liked the engine anyway - and yeah, the price is going in the wrong direction, for an ageing model ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I say it every time Chris green does a sole slip on 19th century locomotives, and I’m gonna say it again for this one; it never fails to amaze me when 19th century engines survive well into the British Railways era.
Thanks a lot mate - I can certainly recommend it - check the link in the description, the older one is very cheap indeed at the moment! Agreed though - the RRP is taking the mickey very slightly ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks amazing! Unfortunately Ii haven't had pleasant experiences with Bachmann locos, and also have to shell out a bit of my pocket money to fix a coupling on my Hornby A4 so I don't think I will be getting new stock anytime soon.
@@SamsTrains yeah. Went to couple up to my WCRC Mk1's and as soon as it coupled the attachment broke. Managed to get it out now, but by the looks of things they aren't NEM pockets and are proprietary, so yay(!)
I always use my class 5 with 4 wheel coaches, I think she always looks better with about 4 or 5 of them with a break van, that or I put her with a mixed train
I love this 2-4-2 Tank Engine from the late 1880s! Quite an odd wheel configuration and a wheel configuration you don't see that much at all like 2-8-2T, 2-8-2, 4-4-2, 2-4-2T, 4-4-2T, and 0-4-4. But isn't this the same 2-4-2 tank engine that you shown in lots of your older and previous videos or is this a new one with a new running number?
Hey Gino! It was announced in January, but I don't know of any firm dates - I imagine next year some time! I have included a link to the ones available at the moment in the description! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi. I am not very fond of Bachmann Trains. In fact I've got only four Bachmann locomotives : two 80-Ton 3-Truck Shays and two GE 44-tonners for switching in the yard of my (future) sawing mill company. I had to fully disassemble and rebuild even the pickups of both Shays (I also took the chance to install a Loksound , led lights, and a fire-effect led in the boiler) to be able to make them run smoothly. And I will have to rebuild the GE-44 tonners too... It was hard with the Shays...but I learnt a lot and I enjoyed a lot too. But I am totally convinced that the price for Bachmann locomotives is not fair. They are very good looking locomotives but their mechanics is rather lousy. In my humble opinion they don't offer what they are priced for.
I can understand that mate - they have made some poor engines in the past! Glad you were able to do something to improve them though mate! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You don't drop the water scoop unless you are picking up water, therefor you wouldn't expect to see water scoops under the locomotive. The word is dissect not disect. People often mistake the word. There are two words bisect meaning cut in half and dissect which means cut open. Remember, that as a 2-4-2 it wasn't expected to take high numbers of coaches but was a good commuter engine.
I see Don, thanks a lot for letting me know - and yes that's very true, it's certainly not a dreadful puller by any means! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Bachmann prices never come down. They milk the enthusiast for everything they’ve got . You are paying the Kader premium because they expect European levels of pricing from their U.K. arm. I got a Lancashire and Yorkshire liveried one, when prices were ok , probably about 5 years ago. I think it was a limited edition from Locomotion , but it’s almost never used. I find the wheel arrangement tends to derail easily . I actually prefer the maroon LMS one but definitely not buying another. The Fowler 4MT I think is the odd one out or is it a Fairburn tank , couldn’t quite make it out , dating from LMS days
Absolutely right Russell - and it annoys the hell out of me! Yes I think that will have been the Locomotion one, they did do the L&Y version! And very well spotted with the tank - that's correct! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Rails of Sheffield have the LMS crimson lake 10730 on their website for GBP 111 retailer's price (no RRP indicated by Bachmann), and no issue date. Hope they'll put a 5 poles motor for this price... When you see what Oxford Rail and Hatton's use to sell for GBP 100, it's a shame that Bachmann does not make no effort to put their prices down.
Hi Sam! Excellent review! I think it's too expensive! Please could you do some more diesels? You still haven't done your Lima EWS class 60. Also I recommend the Dapol class 68. How long till your next video?
Hi Sam. Nice little loco but again Bachmann have overpriced their models in my opinion. Following you're review on the N7 I have pre- ordered the BR black version with dcc sound with the new loksound decoder for not much more than a basic Bachmann tank. Hats off to Oxford rail and sensible pricing!!. Cheers Sam.
Hi Sam, nice loco, It is a bit odd that r-t-r 2-4-2ts are rare beasts considering in real life 2-4-2 tanks were very popular. A lot of pre grouping companies used them to some degree, manly those with heavy commuter and suburban traffic. These include the GWR, LNWR, GCR, GER, NER, LBSCR and a lot of smaaler lines like The Wirral and Colne Valley. Its not that were rare in BR days either, they were used well into the 1950's, with some of the Great Eastern locos lasting until 1960. Surely a model of a GER F4 or F5 would be a good seller. Just interest, the GWR built 31 class 36xx 2-4-2 tanks in 1900, one of William Deans last designs. They were call Birdcages due their large well windowed cabs (The GER also had 2-4-2 tank with the same nicknme, the F6's). They used the same water pick ups the GWR used on their fastest express locos like the Dean Singles and the Badminton 4-4-0;s. The result was they picked water far to fast and the preasure burst the tanks open. In the end they were fitted with huge overflow valves, three times the size of normal fitting, they looked like huge metal mushroom, so the class got another nickname 'the mushroom tanks' Anyway great vid as always. Jon P.S. - Any chance of a retro review on your triang side tank 0-4-0t, the Nelly / Polly / Connie one?
Yeah that is quite unusual - this is the only one I can think of! I didn't realise there were many though, thanks for letting me know about those! Appreciate your kind words mate, Sam :)
I was so confused when I saw the video cuz I thought u had already done this loco, then u explained why. The reason I bought the original version was because of ur video

I have question so I got a new Bachmann Thomas set and I don’t know when I have to clean the track do you when I have to clean it? I was thinking of doing it every time I play with it
Hey Merlin - every time you play with it is a very good option - but really, I'd do it every week if you play often, or every month if it's just a few hours a week! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam I have got a math's question I have 8 Box van's and I add 5 box van's how many box van's all together? but unfortunately you not aloud used a container!😐
They are old and i don't think they'll need to handle the coronation scott anytime soon. So you can't complain about the power also i think the cab is good too a bit too harsh but you were generous by giving it 5 stars.
haha yep that's true - though usually models this size have much less scale tractive effort than their real life counterparts, so there's always room for more pulling power! Duly noted, thanks for your thoughts mate! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah it's a shame they have to price their models the way they do - I just hope the public vote with their wallets! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful model Sam! Good thing one is preserved and it’s the only preserved British 2-4-2T that is until the new Holden F5 is finished! It’d be nice if the NRM would explore the possibility of restoring the engine!
I seem to have a different experience with Bachman.... I've never had a problem with their motors ... I run american engines so perhaps the size of our engines has something to do with it but I digress... great video though you do a good job
Glad to hear that! Don't get me wrong - it isn't every other engine's motor failing - but it's certainly more frequent than from other manufacturers in my experience! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah I have - it's a great shame that he couldn't make it - but with so few promises fulfilled (including those of higher standards - Ian lol!), it's no surprise :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
...It may be an expensive solution, but couldn't you swap out the motors with better, similar sized ones? That way, you wouldn't lose any locomotives...
I've tried it - but I'm yet to find a suitable replacement - Bachmann use their own proprietary motors, whose gears are built into the motor mounting bracket most of the time - it's almost as though they're designed to take only Bachmann motors.... which are sold extremely expensively! Another anti-consumer move from Bachmann! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Speaking of L&YR Tank Engines I've seen another weird wheel configuration for another L&YR tank engine and it's the L&YR Class 32 and it has a 0-8-2T wheel configuration. Quite an odd wheel configuration for a tank engine. Also they got withdrawn and scrapped pretty early during the late 1920s and none got preserved. Image: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%26YR_Class_32

Thanks very much mate - I really do love these ones too! I'm not too sure actually - I wouldn't have thought they'd be super fast for that era... my guess would be 60-70mph max??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Oh wow! For a tank engine that seems fast but then again it isn’t unheard of. Thank you and keep up the superb work.
Thanks so much Mark, that sounds great - hoe you can get a couple too!
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
Looks fantastic! Shame about the slow running though. If you're paying the high price for the newer versions you'd hope that wouldn't be the case on those examples
Yeah I agree - for that price, there was really no room for anything other than perfection!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The cylinders on the prototype are pretty much directly under the smokebox between the 2 front wheels. I'm not sure, but it looked like they weren't included on your model (although to see them even on the prototype you'd have to get down on your hands and knees in front of the loco...)
Anyway, I loved this video! The Class 5 tank is probably my favorite Brittish locomotive. Too bad about the high price, though.
Ahh very interesting John, thanks for this - I'll definitely try and find some material on that! Glad you liked the engine anyway - and yeah, the price is going in the wrong direction, for an ageing model ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I quite like that loco. If I wanted to buy one, I would get one from second hand market possibly in BR Black
Sounds good! Second hand is definitely a good way to go! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I say it every time Chris green does a sole slip on 19th century locomotives, and I’m gonna say it again for this one; it never fails to amaze me when 19th century engines survive well into the British Railways era.
haha I know - those engine builders really did know what they were doing!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This L&Y tank looks a fine model Sam, but once again the Price is an issue, thanks for your honest review...Bob
Thanks a lot Bob - yep, starting to sound like a broken record aren't I?? ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Not at all Sam, your opinions are impartial and very helpful to your loyal followers.
One of bachmanns best
It certainly is!! :D
Wow super beautiful locomotive! I love it😍 great work Sam!

Really nice loco I will hopefully be getting the older one I think that the RRP is to high really good video Sam 😀
Thanks a lot mate - I can certainly recommend it - check the link in the description, the older one is very cheap indeed at the moment! Agreed though - the RRP is taking the mickey very slightly ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks amazing! Unfortunately Ii haven't had pleasant experiences with Bachmann locos, and also have to shell out a bit of my pocket money to fix a coupling on my Hornby A4 so I don't think I will be getting new stock anytime soon.
Sorry to hear that mate - sorry but not surprised, I don’t consider them to be very good quality most of the time!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah I agree - I really like to run mine with the 4-wheelers too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm waiting for the L&Y version to be reissued as its the closest thing to a Barry Railway Class J.
Ahh very nice! Will you be converting it into a class J? :D
@@SamsTrains Yes. With the help of more talented modelling friends than myself.
Thanks a lot mate, yes it’s very odd indeed! Yes it’s the same, I decided to make a fresh new review!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Interesting wheel arrangement
Definitely - pretty unique!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It kind of looks like Oliver but with 2 mini wheels at the front,Its a Noice model of the class 5!
haha yeah! You're not the first one to say this looks a bit like Oliver! ;D

Really beautifully done. I think the upcoming Crimson Lake scheme will have "LMS" rather than the seal.
Thanks Andrew! Is that so? Quite a nice variation this time then!

Keep up the good work Sam!

Sam, when will the maroon livery be out and where can I get it? Do you have a Hattons link?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This loco looks great in the maroon!
Thank you! I love the maroon too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Man that engine looks amazing, i just wish it had more side-rod/piston action visible
Yeah me too - it'd look even more amazing with that!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Ahh fantastic - that's not to bad at all - but I imagine they'll still have the same old 3-pole motor!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey sam, those two coaches that you ran with the l&yr class 5, are they Bachmann or mainline?
Hey Nicholas - I think they were Mainline, but Bachmann produced the same coaches for a time I believe!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam! Excellent review! I think it's too expensive! Please could you do some more diesels? You still haven't done your Lima EWS class 60. Also I recommend the Dapol class 68. How long till your next video?
Thanks very much mate - I agree, pretty expensive! Yes, more diesels coming very soon!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cheers Sam.
Thanks Dave, I’d agree with you there! Absolutely right - here’s to oxford rail for showing up weaker manufacturers!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, nice loco,
It is a bit odd that r-t-r 2-4-2ts are rare beasts considering in real life 2-4-2 tanks were very popular.
In the end they were fitted with huge overflow valves, three times the size of normal fitting, they looked like huge metal mushroom, so the class got another nickname 'the mushroom tanks'
Anyway great vid as always.
Jon
P.S. - Any chance of a retro review on your triang side tank 0-4-0t, the Nelly / Polly / Connie one?
Yeah that is quite unusual - this is the only one I can think of! I didn't realise there were many though, thanks for letting me know about those! Appreciate your kind words mate,
Sam :)
Great video Sam it is a great model may have to get one some day
Thanks a lot David, I can certainly recommend it!

I genuinely wonder if there will ever be a time where Sam will run out of a item to review
I wonder that too... it shouldn't be a problem for a good few years yet though ;)

@@SamsTrains ok thanks!
Can I install a hornby 6 pin dcc decoder in it? I’m just curious because I’m hoping to pick one up next week from my hobby shop.
If it's 6 pin then it should be fine - not tried that myself though!

Have one of your Bachman ever quite on you. 2 of my Bachman has quite on me the first day I got them. Can you tell me USA model trains brands
Yeah I've had quite a few Bachmann engines have motor failures - I don't much like the motors they use!

Sam I have got a math's question I have 8 Box van's and I add 5 box van's how many box van's all together? but unfortunately you not aloud used a container!😐
Hmmm.... I feel like this may be some sort of trick question... deceptively simple?? ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Love tank engines......thanks Sam.....by the way with you all the way about the price....not sure if I will get one...but tempting though 👍
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah it's a shame they have to price their models the way they do - I just hope the public vote with their wallets!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like your trains and rails
Thanks very much Jesus! :D
Beautiful model Sam! Good thing one is preserved and it’s the only preserved British 2-4-2T that is until the new Holden F5 is finished! It’d be nice if the NRM would explore the possibility of restoring the engine!
Thanks a Ryno, yes that is a good thing! I agree, it’s be lovely to see it run again!

Woah! So unusual, with an even more unusual history!
haha thanks mate - yeah definitely an odd one this!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice one Sam!
Thanks Marco! :D
I seem to have a different experience with Bachman.... I've never had a problem with their motors ... I run american engines so perhaps the size of our engines has something to do with it but I digress... great video though you do a good job
Glad to hear that! Don't get me wrong - it isn't every other engine's motor failing - but it's certainly more frequent than from other
manufacturers in my experience!

What's going to happen to those 'higher standards' then?

@@SamsTrains UR WELCOME
...It may be an expensive solution, but couldn't you swap out the motors with better, similar sized ones? That way, you wouldn't lose any locomotives...
I've tried it - but I'm yet to find a suitable replacement - Bachmann use their own proprietary motors, whose gears are built into the motor mounting bracket most of the time - it's almost as though they're designed to take only Bachmann motors.... which are sold extremely expensively! Another anti-consumer move from Bachmann!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could you please re-do the 2mt from 5 years ago?
Sadly mine busted - so I can't do that unfortunately :(

Sam, what happened to the other 2016 review?
This video replaced the old one! :D
Is the N7 your favorite so far
Of this year, I think it is yeah! :D
I only had one problem I live in Africa and it is quite expensive to import these models
