Another informative, authoritative, and entertaining review. Please don't flinch from your mantra that - regardless of the price paid - the minimum requirement is that a new loco should run satisfactorily straight out of the box.
I obtained the exact same version, of this model two weeks ago. Similar problems with pick ups, plus it slows down whilst running through point work. The radial trucks that carry the leading and trailing pony wheels do not have enough sideways play resulting in the model presenting a too long wheel base if trying to traverse curved setrack points. This issue has improved with a couple of hours running, but is still visible.
In the U.S. we had a loco class with 4 driver arrangement. They where the 4-4-2 Atlantic and it was a tender loco. Not many have been modeled in ho scale mine is a roundhouse model.
I bought my one off Rails of Sheffield in November 2022 and it has all the same issues. I put it down to not having enough pickups but after your review I will look a bit deeper. It sounds like Bachmann wanted shot of them so released them to Retailers at a discount.
Thanks for sharing - sorry to hear yours had issues too! I do think at least part of the problem is how long they were sat in their boxes for! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sitting back with a coffee and cookies to unwind the day is always so relaxing with your channel 🙂 Locos having sat on the shelf for too long or in the box as old new stock remains quite tricky unfortunately. The seller should have informed you of course, discount or not. Do you contact the seller in advance, or just click and buy? But even then..., we've had it more than once but we knew the condition of the loco upfront. However, sellers can easily even claim that it has had a service but not every one of them are true to their word. About ~50% of our new old stock acquisitions do need a good service and we are talking about expensive locos even, e.g. new older collectors items or new older special releases (usually hardened oil/grease). As for the loco, even 7 years ago the entire mechanical arrangement was still archaic at the time, good heavens. But she's running now at least, and the price paid is certainly a great bargain. Interestingly, 2-4-2 steamers aren't rare Sam. It was one of the most popular setups for tank engines near the end of the 19th century in many countries. Could be of course that they were less popular in the UK though. Cheerio.
That's lovely to hear thank you! No I don't contact them in advance - I buy just like any customer would, as that makes the videos more authentic. Definitely a tricky subject, but this doesn't happen too often! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The LNWR,had a good number of Webb 2-4-2t's and they were used on motor trains,(push-pulls),and sundry branch lines! I think most of them were gone by the 1960's! Anyway, that's a companion piece to the L&Y engines! Thank you for your incisive commentary, and I hope the retailers, and wholesalers take notice! Thank you! 😇
Hi Sam, I've got 2 of these, LMS red one and Lancashire and Yorkshire Lined Black... No problems with either of them, both running great. No slow down on curves 3rd/2nd even on small 1st radius loop. Checking the springing on the 1st and 4th axles, appears to be very similar on both, can't feel a difference. Great review as always Sam... You've maybe got a Friday afternoon build with this model..?
Just to add, interestingly the Black Lancashire and Yorkshire doesn't have sprung buffers, they are a longer and much finer build of buffer, which probably means it's not possible to have them sprung.. Just FYI...
Glad to hear that - it's a very strange situation - as my older version of this is perfect too... never derails or slows down! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review Sam! Yeah I think the age of the model was partly why this seemed to fail so much, I bought my class 5 for £100, conveniently the same one as this, the only issue I've had with it is some slow down around the curves, though I'm unsure if this is an actual loco issue or down to the fact I'm using a standard hornby train set controller with it, for it's age though it seems to hold up quite well, I do quite love these engines
Thank you! Yeah I suspect as much too - the slowing down on the curves is super odd, there's no reason why this wheel configuration should do that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam, when you first opened her up and showed the gear train I was surprised at the amount of side play - it might be enough to cause mis-match and stalling.
Sam, unfortunately a retailer is just as clueless on the running condition of a loco from the factory until the customer specifies it needs to be taken out of its packaging and tested before shipping, and some customers do not want an opened package. I've had terrible luck with some locos, one which was so bad I had to ask for a refund. After this I make it very clear I want any loco to be thuroughly tested and issues put right before it's shipped to me. So far that's worked and my locos run out of the box.
I would not let this review put you off, mine has always been an excellent runner from the start. I tend to take alot of these reviews with a pinch of salt .
Hi Sam, great review and if delivered working what a bargain. Such a great looking locomotive with a superb finish. I bought a Bachmann 4575 recently which was also an older release, but at full price of £140 (I wanted this one for the BR unlined early emblem livery). Runs like a dream and looks the business, but such a shame it was delivered in a box that looked like it had been flushed down the lav! When I reported this I was offered a £10 voucher on my next purchase.
I have two of these (L&YR livery bought new and BR livery bought used) and aside from the springing making the non-driven axles audibly click over point frogs, they run very reliably and smoothly.
This was a good and balanced review. Incidentally, I've got a Class 5 as well, but I didn't think she was as good as what you've made her out to be (but each to their own, I guess). My Class 5 is in BR lined black (early crest) and numbered 50705. And she's also the only 2-4-2 in my collection. That reminds me, you can get these engines in Train Simulator (from a developer called Caledonia Works). It'd be interesting to see a TS video with engines that you've also got in model form.
Hi Sam! Sorry to hear that you had problems with this loco due it be in storage for some time. I've already come to terms with the fact that if I buy either a Hornby or Bachmann locomotive that what I get is basically an assembled model that requires tweaking to get it to run properly. To me that is reflected in the price I pay (£100.- or so) and I prefer this over any other brand on offer.😊 Greets from the Netherlands. ErikJan
I purchased a L&YR liveried example a couple of months ago, 2nd hand, but it was delivered to my parents' house, so I won't see how it performs for another week and a half. Fingers crossed it isn't as bad as this one.
Yeah it will be - because the sprung non-drivers are supporting too much of the locos weight, it may have been bouncing forward and back on those springs!
Bought the Crimson and Lined Black Lancs and Yorks versions for £110 each in Oct2022. Great looking loco and nice cab detailing, on the L&Y version the cab was painted in lovely light cream colour highlighting the detail. Re your running issues, they should all be directed at Bachmann not MRD ie are MRD supposed to anticipate every question/eventuality? As long as its a new loco and advertised as such, the rest is down to good service practice and you should research before disassembling. If you know its an older loco b4 buying, you should service before running. And the eng design is a function of what they hv to pack in. I also had to wait ages for mine from ordering ie it was along time in cmg to production.
At first, I thought: not interesting. Then I checked the scores and saw the livery and now I think that this just might be the branchline loco I was looking for It looks gorgeous!
The reviews where the running performance does not match the expectation of the new owner are always entertaining. A three star loco? Maybe you should rebrand it as a GLR (Great Lemon Railway) loco" Thanks for uploading.
The way the non-driven axles are assembled to pick up power is a bit old-fashioned. It's something some of my old steam tender engines have (even the drive axles are one-sided) and something I'd expect from a lighted passenger car. If you like unusual wheel arrangements, your next 3D printed model should be of North Eastern Railway 66 "Aerolite" (LNER X1) with a 2-2-4 wheel arrangement. You can find the real one at the NRM.
Ive got last years L&YR black livery version and its not a great runner or good round tight curves, or even great over certain types of points - its a shame as generally it feels n looks a quality model - great review as ever Sam
A decent review here Sam, it’s is a nice looking locomotive in the BR black livery, don’t mind the class 5 myself even though I don’t go for pre grouping locomotives, would definitely pick one up in the crimson though as that livery on one of these looks really nice.
1:39 Gold dust. 1:44 Arthur was upset. his spotless record was ruined. “Peep! Peep! what a mess!” explained Thomas. The fat controller was very annoyed. “what happened here?” “The trucks were singing. Sam there is the same one up on eBay Australia as new for $175 includes postage. Would have made an offer but after watching your review, certainly not.
Hi Sam, ive noticed from your own experience, that of other youtubers and my own experience, that Bachmann often seems to gave trouble with springs being too weak or too strong. My guess is that in the factory they have a range of different strength springs and just get them muddled up
It may just be me today (last night I turned down the diameter of Flying Scotsman’s handrail knobs), but the gigantic handrail knobs, unrealistic blackened rods, and thick buffer casings strike me as apparent and significantly detracting from and otherwise spick&spam loco. Shame about the mechanism/quality control. This configuration would be a great candidate for beam compensation, Varney type springing, with a single bent wire acting as downward springing and side control. With the carrying wheel springing, it’s always a balance of tractive effort, track handling, and roughness of riding. I’ll make CAD for a device to measure weight per wheel to help us see how locos compare. I wonder how this loco and others will age, as now my best runner by far is my old Bachmann Thomas, Toby, and Salty while my other locos haven’t improved in performance. I don’t think there is a way to predict improvement in performance. Springs really should be adjustable by the way, it’s all to easy to see a repeat of today with derailments. Thanks as always Sam!
The wheel arrangement was more common than models. The LNER absorbed nine types that they classed F1 to F9 totalling 349 locomotives. More than their Pacific's I think but just about all the LNER Pacific's have RTR models but no F class models. Would be interesting to quantify which wheel arrangements are over and under represented in model form, but that tells a story of how many modellers of railways do not like to represent the reality of railways too much.
Yes of course - that was stated in the video too! As for should not take apart… it’s a good job I did, as I fixed the problem…. As I do every time I take a loco apart 😉
Excellent and unbiassed review as always, thank you for this. One thing I'm a bit worried about on this model is the works plate on the side of the smokebox -- in fact, on each side of the smokebox. Normally there was only one of these on a loco, so having one on each side is -- to say the least -- unusual. Also, the plate says 'LMS', which again is odd. I'm not an expert on this, but I'd certainly expect an LYR loco to have 'LYR' on the builder's plate, even if it had been rebuilt with a superheater by the LMS. I don't own any version of this model, but I have to wonder if they all carry the same works number on these plates -- which is a big slip-up on Bachmann's part, given the different running numbers, and hence works numbers, for models in the different liveries.
Thanks a lot David, thanks for sharing. Ahh that's interesting - wonder if that's accurate or not then? I'd be interested to know! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review of a really beautiful loco! What a shame you had problems with it. I do notice that it kind of undulates as it moves, like a rocking horse. I think it's to do with the driving wheels. Anyway, thanks Sam.
There is some truth to what Sam says about locos sitting in the box for many years. It's like a car. If we let a car sit in the garage for many years then it probably won't start and will likely be completely ruined due to creeping corrosion, dried up grease, bad oil, stale gas (petrol :-), and other factors. So the moral of the story is: Drive your car as much as you can. And run your locos around the track as much as you can too. And perform routine maintenance. As if Sam wouldn't :-)
I really love this class of tank engine Sam. I actually have one of these, I think I paid £53 for it I've forgotten, but I absolutely love it. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Seems you've got a faulty model. As your LMS version, mine (LMS version too) was a good runner when I received her. I've paid mine on the GBP 127 mark as far as i can remember. Mine was a reissue, that explains things. The black BR like yours was already on sale before my LMS was reissued. The drivetrain is clearly one, if not many notches below what a good brand like Rapido or Accurascale can do. But overall, i will qualify her as a fair/good model.
If it's sat on the shelf, and is not second hand, I believe it's still considered brand new. With all the problems it may have had out of the box, I'd teturn an item.
Reviewing this one again? I've always loved the loco, and I much prefer the red livery you reviewed a few years ago. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
Have 2 of these both BR livery. Nothing but trouble! My was stalling on the points and took the keeper plate off. Big mistake! That pick up system is the pits. I didnt notice the polarity on the pony wheels and all pick ups needed adjusting to no avail. Hard wired in a decoder but couldnt put it back together again properly. Bought another one same as yours which runs reasonable with the decoder in( bachmann). The other was sent to Olivia trains who did a superb jib fitting a new esu decoder and a stay alive. Different model now (at a cost). Atrocious design and needs a stay alive fitted as standard. The worst bachmann model ive ever had
Thank you! Yeah it's fairly typical of the Bachmann we knew a few years ago... fortunately their new stuff is a lot better! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another informative, authoritative, and entertaining review.

Nice! I have a kit built LNER Parker F1, ex GCR and same wheel arrangement. Great looking thing. Joachim
I just remembered that the lyr class 5 is my favourite engine out there, thanks!
I love your vids only found the Chanel a few days ago but instantly loved it .keep up the great work!!!
Great review as always Sam. You hardly disappoint us.
Thank you so much Joshua!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review Sam and there is nobody on RUclips who does it better. Well done.
I have three of these. All are superb runners, even at a crawl.
Sam, would you ever consider reviewing the LEGO Orient Express that was recently released? Would love to see your thoughts on LEGO Trains.
Don’t forget the Holden F4 on the Great Eastern. 2-4-2T.
And the 341 LNER classes F1 to F9 of the 2-4-2T wheel arrangement.
More than the number of LNER Pacific total.
Hey sam you should do a review on the Dreyfuss Hudson
Great review Sam! Yeah I think the age of the model was partly why this seemed to fail so much, I bought my class 5 for £100, conveniently the same one as this, the only issue I've had with it is some slow down around the curves, though I'm unsure if this is an actual loco issue or down to the fact I'm using a standard hornby train set controller with it, for it's age though it seems to hold up quite well, I do quite love these engines

My TT GBRf 08 turned up today, l am very pleased.
Sam, when you first opened her up and showed the gear train I was surprised at the amount of side play - it might be enough to cause mis-match and stalling.
Great review sam 👏 and some very good advice 👍 keep up the good work 👏
Sam, unfortunately a retailer is just as clueless on the running condition of a loco from the factory until the customer specifies it needs to be taken out of its packaging and tested before shipping, and some customers do not want an opened package.
I've had terrible luck with some locos, one which was so bad I had to ask for a refund. After this I make it very clear I want any loco to be thuroughly tested and issues put right before it's shipped to me. So far that's worked and my locos run out of the box.
Another great review. As a collector of pre LMS loco types I was tempted but given your review I’m going to avoid it.
I would not let this review put you off, mine has always been an excellent runner from the start. I tend to take alot of these reviews with a pinch of salt .
I'm probably remembering this wrongly, but it reminds me of Bachmann's Coal Tank loco you reviewed and raved about a year or two back ?
Hi Sam, great review and if delivered working what a bargain. Such a great looking locomotive with a superb finish. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I thought I was alone with loving weird wheel arrangements. That’s one of the reasons the GWR 14xx is my favorite engine
haha definitely not - I just love them!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i think you had the same expirience like sir topham hatt with henry
Hi Sam, I have one of these in LMS Black. Mine hasn't had the running issues yours had and has no problems with 2nd radius curves.

Anyone else notice the loco ‘rocking’ slightly at just after the 30 minute mark? Or is it just my eyes?
Can you PLEASE do the hattons’s Bluebell P Class?
Hi Sam I noticed it wobbles a little when moving check the axle bearings
I purchased a L&YR liveried example a couple of months ago, 2nd hand, but it was delivered to my parents' house, so I won't see how it performs for another week and a half. Fingers crossed it isn't as bad as this one.
I love this class of engine and the reason I love this tank engine is because of the wheel basis aswell
haha absolutely - it's super cool isn't it??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
In the video, the loco appears to be nodding front to back, particularly when first run. Is this an optical illusion or part of the running issues?
Yeah it will be - because the sprung non-drivers are supporting too much of the locos weight, it may have been bouncing forward and back on those springs!
Bought the Crimson and Lined Black Lancs and Yorks versions for £110 each in Oct2022. The Barry Railway's last passenger loco was the Class J 2-4-2T, unfortunately not available as either a ready-to-run model or even a kit.
At first, I thought: not interesting. Then I checked the scores and saw the livery and now I think that this just might be the branchline loco I was looking for It looks gorgeous!

Stunning looking model. Very much suits the livery, which isn't too dissimilar to its original L&YR lined black, if a little less ornate.
I agree - not far off the L&YR, though Bachmann did that one too I believe!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam such a beautiful locomotive such a shame about how it runs
Ive got last years L&YR black livery version and its not a great runner or good round tight curves, or even great over certain types of points - its a shame as generally it feels n looks a quality model - great review as ever Sam
Lovely loco, shame about the issues with the non-driven wheels though. Didn’t the motor of your LMS one burn out?
Fantastic as always. Looks like a wonderful loco, just a shame about all those issues. :)
A decent review here Sam, it’s is a nice looking locomotive in the BR black livery, don’t mind the class 5 myself even though I don’t go for pre grouping locomotives, would definitely pick one up in the crimson though as that livery on one of these looks really nice.

As far as unique wheel arrangements go, the PEnny's S1, S2 & Q1 can't be beat
I mean the ATSF did have a 4-4-6-2 mallet, and if I recall correctly the diameter of the front and rear driven sets is different from another.
Rails of Sheffield were offering these at £95 in 2020. I bought one, lovely to look at, but a poor runner similar to yours
1:39 Gold dust.
1:44 Arthur was upset. his spotless record was ruined.
“Peep! Peep! what a mess!” explained Thomas. The fat controller was very annoyed. “what happened here?”

Sam there is the same one up on eBay Australia as new for $175 includes postage. Would have made an offer but after watching your review, certainly not.
Stupid question but dose it smell nice in the Atic ?
Of course it does!!

Hi Sam, Good review, yes I like the engine , but why should you have to do things to make them run good 😢, All the best Brian 😁🤠
I notice the chassis under the base keeper plate had a crack in it… is that normal? Could that have effected things?
Nice! Lovely looking loco, in a beautiful livery - great video as always sam!
Thanks a lot Jack, glad you liked it!

The build date of 1897 is certainly well before the 1923 LMS!
It's a shame it doesn't run so well. Now I know to get the LMS Maroon variant instead of BR Black.
looks cool but sad to hear you having problems. I do love small locos. Keep up the good work sam!
Thank you! Can't beat small locos :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review of a really beautiful loco! What a shame you had problems with it. I do notice that it kind of undulates as it moves, like a rocking horse. I think it's to do with the driving wheels. Anyway, thanks Sam.
This is a nice engine, but that mechanism definitely reminds me of their 56XX!
haha yeah it is similar!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video Sam's trains
Thanks Brian!
@@SamsTrains you're welcome 😊 buddy 😊
There is some truth to what Sam says about locos sitting in the box for many years. It's like a car. If we let a car sit in the garage for many years then it probably won't start and will likely be completely ruined due to creeping corrosion, dried up grease, bad oil, stale gas (petrol :-), and other factors.
So the moral of the story is: Drive your car as much as you can. And run your locos around the track as much as you can too. And perform routine maintenance. As if Sam wouldn't :-)
Here's a thought, you could use this engine to pull the Troublesome Trucks, and the Spiteful Brake Van. Then you can have a real troublesome train.
Its a pity no 5 pole motor & flywheel, like Rapido state in their Cabbage locos ( unpowered prorypes) to add a motor the cost is minimal!
Does anyone know what type of metal is used for cast metal parts?
It's not just only 3 pole without a flywheel, , but it's also not even skew wound. Cheapest of the cheap
1:55 funny story about that Sam. I can't seem to find it up there anymore, are bachmann still making them.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I don't think they're making this version - when I last checked they still had the L&YR crimson one though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The crimson one is so jaw dropping beautiful
It really is isn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I got one with the early BR chrest on the tanks. Was a second hand from rails ebay page. And i had no running issues with mine.
A very nice Loco - I don't think I have a 0-4-0, I've got a 2-6-0!!! 🤔😉🚂🚂🚂
Not really relevant to this video but do you have a list of Locos and Rolling Stock to 3D Print?
Nahh not really - I just take them one project at a time!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I really love this class of tank engine Sam. I actually have one of these, I think I paid £53 for it I've forgotten, but I absolutely love it.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Blimey, if you did that's a great deal!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
For an engine that was meant to pull a handful of 6 wheel coaches, I think 19 Mark Is is perfectly overkill.
I have one, although second hand, but I have no problems with it.
Glad to hear that - no problems with my maroon one either, but this was a bugger!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ok what is that on the table in the back
If it's sat on the shelf, and is not second hand, I believe it's still considered brand new.
With all the problems it may have had out of the box, I'd teturn an item.
cool vid thanks lee
Thanks a lot Lee!
Amazing looking engine
Thanks Justin, I agree!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I hope at some point you'll be able to get a Class 5 in L&YR black; it would go well with the Hattons coaches releasing next year.
I'd love that too - such a super livery on that one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I think I found the odd one out, is it the dean goods because it's a 0-6-0 tender engine?
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I’m not really a big of lms locos but this looks good
Thanks Alex, glad you liked it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The technical term is "Voodoo".
Mine can't do it 2nd radius
It's weird isn't it? With some tinkering it was absolutely fine... and my maroon one is fine too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains had you awnser me yet ?
I’m confused. Didn’t you say you didn’t have any other 2-4-2s and yet you keep showing your crimson lake 2-4-2.
I think he meant that he didn’t have any other 2-4-2s that weren’t a Class 5
Your other model isn't in original Lancashire and Yorkshire lined black livery like 1008 in the NRM, yours in in early LMS lined crimson.
You could make a modified l&yr class 28 with the 2-6-0 wheel alignment.
That could make a fun project! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Reviewing this one again? I've always loved the loco, and I much prefer the red livery you reviewed a few years ago. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
I've never reviewed this one! But yeah, there's a lot to be said for the maroon!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrainsOh, is it a different tooling?
I like the paintwork on this engine with stripes 👍😊🤩😎
I agree Sam!
Can you do Thomas and friend Sunting video
A lovely little loco. Dose look smart in its l&yr black and crimson livery
Surprised that I don’t have one yet
I agree - actually all the liveries look great on this one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cool
Thanks Alex! :D
Hi Sam! Man, it's a shame that this 5 isn't the best. Always loved those locos, but it seems quite typical of Bachmann. 😔
Thank you! Yeah it's fairly typical of the Bachmann we knew a few years ago... fortunately their new stuff is a lot better!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Not looking forward to my final exams this month... But at least I always have your videos to cheer me up. 😌
Ahh well I'm sure they'll go well - good luck!
