I bought 90 740gl here in Canada last year. It been a GREAT CAR . I bought it $750. I got a great deal on far below retail. my has 141,000 miles now. Last owner paid 3200 for it 3 years ago. She done a lot of maintenance on it and then she got sick and passed away. He just wanted it gone, Iand I bought it sight unseen. She showed me a couple of pictures and the receipts on the repairs, and I decided to buy it quick before it is gone. It needed a new brake caliper and rotor. I drove 250km home and found out the caliper was seized. Off. I have never heard of a caliper seized in the off postion before. The car has been no surprises at all.
The cam in your car is the one i want for my 740. My is car is a dog, 2.3 113hp. I think it is VLX cam or that is what IPD calls it.

Nice vid, really enjoyed it. I've never had a B200 or even driven one but I heard alot about it being not enough for these, I didn't know the specs so thanks for sharing those. Would love to see more on this one!

I reckon the B200 would be decent with a manual gearbox, at least passable. With the autobox the extra low down torque from the 230 makes all the difference, I don't think the car is really any faster at all but you don't have to work it nearly as hard.

That sound from the main fuel pump due to the pump in the tank not working so the main pump has to work much harder. I had the same problem with my 1988 Volvo 745 GLE.

Never mind all that . . . have you got the Dolomite’s engine in yet.
Seriously though, impressive video and narration. . .cars ain’t bad either.

I find it very interesting how spec changes from one market to another. Here in Canada, the smallest engine in a 240 was the 2.1 litre until 84. After that, and in the 7 and 9 series, the 2.3 was the smallest engine. That 740 is well bought. With that few miles it is barely run in. My 1990 240 Estate with the 2.3 litre and Aisan-Warner AW-70 is now at about 385,000 miles. On a good long motorway run, I regularly see 35 miles to the Imperial gallon. It loves to cruise at a license endangering 85 mph. If the AW-70 in your other 740 was not locking the torque converter, something was wrong with it. It is meant to drop into overdrive at 37 mph, and the torque converter is meant to lock up at about 50 mph. Mine still does.
The single sweep and intermittent wipe both use the park circuit in the wiper motor. In other words, time for a new wiper motor.
One thing to remember is that the estates specify a different size tire than the saloons. The wagon should be running a 195/75R14, which is getting difficult to find. A set of 15 inch wheels gives much wider selection in the 205/65R15. Better tires are available for less money, plus the car will ride and handle properly on them.
It is funny, just half an hour ago I was wondering if you were still around, Alistair. Scrolling through RUclips, and there you were. Great to see you back.

The twin dicky seats were a dealer installed option that yours may well never have had put in. Most options on Volvos of that era were limited in factory spec and the rest were on the Accessory Catalogue. Also, a GLE did not always mean leather interior. Black, yes, on a white Estate, but cloth was standard with leather being a rather pricey factory option.

Not all AW7-series gearboxes have a lockup. May be market dependent as decoding my old car's VIN shows it as having a none lockup 'box. I imagine lockup was standard in North America given the highway miles involved... All ZF22 boxes have a 57mph lockup.
Volvo specs vary hugely market to market, for example Italy only ever got the 2.0 with a turbo, never a 2.3, as that'd have bumped it into a higher tax class.
The wheels on this are already 15", bigger wheels were introduced in 1989 and replaced the 240 style 14" wheels.
Wiper parking works, but only if you smack the relay under the dash. Sometimes it'll bring itself back to life if you go over a bump...
I reckon 35+ mpg could be had on a good motorway run, the best I've had so far is 33mpg, but that was a mix of motorway and 45-55mph A road work combined with a heavy right foot... I have a friend who sees north of 40mpg on a proper long journey at a steady 70mph.

It definitely had dickie seats at some point because the seatbelts are there, and they take the place of the fitting for the sliding load bay cover that my other car had!

Good to hear from you again! It’s been a while,
Nice car the 740, had a 740 estate like that myself but in silver and a 2.3 and with a manual gearbox.
Mine had electrical issues as well which I never got to the bottom of, mine would cut out and I’d have to take out the electrical tray in front of the gearstick and play around with the electrics to get it going again, mine had that same buzz under the floor as well.
Very roomy barges and very useful for house moves etc.
Have you still got the Acclaim and the Green Dolomite?

    • @CaptainSlow1992
      @CaptainSlow1992  3 года назад +1

My last 740 had electrical issues too, namely the dim dip relay causing chaos. I think they all have issues to some degree...
Dolly and Acclaim are still on fleet, Acclaim is on the road and a video is upcoming on the work that was done to it over winter time. Dolly is a full year into major restoration and will be finished before the end of 2021, videos on that also to be made!
