These Volvos are absolutely ridiculous. My Grandparents had an early 700 (manual, four-speed with overdrive), my Aunt had a 700 and my parents had a 240 when I was a kid (H186 XUL), all of them estates. Cavernous, comfortable and refined. I seem to recall my other aunt getting an early V70 as well.
I was about six and we drove from Hereford to Exmouth in the 240 in possibly the worst storm I have ever witnessed. Going through the hills, there were large rocks being washed into the roads over the hills down into Devon - in the dead of night. I never once remember feeling in any danger and in fact was comfortable and warm in the back, with my Dad navigating through it all without a single complaint or sense of alarm.
Another time, my Aunt (who is a farmer) took us around the roads in rural Dorset, with my cousin and I in the dickie seats in the back. Between my cousins and my brother, there were 5 of us and we always used to try and claim the dickie seat first because of the sheer novelty of riding in the back. Watching the lanes disappear as my aunt put her foot down is something I'll never forget.
Yeah, these Volvo estates have a real place in my heart. And given the prices of 90s Volvos, I hope they'll be my next car - but that will have to wait until my old Golf estate dies.

Great video, the first of yours I have seen. I saw you with Steph from I Drive A Classic, so new subscriber here. I have LOTS of experience with Volvos. My daily driver is the 1990 240 DL Estate my mother bought new as her 60th birthday present to herself. Just coming up on 400,000 miles. 30 Ontario, Canada winters have gone over the old boy (Arthur by name). I have never driven the 960 but there are a few things it has in common with the older ones. The transmission, like everything else on the car, is calibrated for severe winter use. Shift the auto manually when you need a downshift, and it works great. The throttle pedal is longer in travel than normal cars to allow finer control in slippery conditions. The factory brake pads are harder than most, making it easier to modulate the brakes. The old red block is a fabulous engine. On the motorway, Arthur returns a solid 35 mpg with his 3 speed with electric overdrive automatic. Could not convince Ma to go for a manual. At 60 years old, she wanted the convenience of the auto. So you know, the 6 cylinder 9 series use the same wheel offset as the front wheel drive Volvos, so there is a great selection of wheels available. The 240, 740, and 940 all use the same bolt pattern and offset, so wheels swap between them. Wagons use a different size tyre than sedans, and most shops don't pay attention to that.

Excellent info there, makes sense that they'd be configured for snow given they're Swedish. An ideal car for Canada!
200 series cars are getting quite collectable now, and thus are above my budget!

@@CaptainSlow1992 The 240 is above my budget to buy, too. Come to that, the last 960 I saw here was over $5,000. The price of used cars there astounds me for being so very low! The price of that one would buy a parts car here, not one you could actually put on the road. The big thing with the double overhead cam Volvo engines is that they are all interference type, so cam belts are very important. Every 5 years or 60,000 miles without fail. Keep that and the oil changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles, and they will last forever. The auto box works well, and according to Volvo the fluid never needs changing. I am a big believer in auxiliary transmission coolers. The auto box in the 960 is sealed, so a transmission flush every 60,000 miles doesn't hurt, either. Have to keep them cool or the fluid burns which will kill a transmission quickly.

That belt needs changing. If you look closely, there is clearance between the teeth of the belt and the teeth of the cam pulley, meaning it is worn. Also the back of the belt appears to be quite worn, so rather than just setting it correctly, shove a new one on it.

It's got a fair bit of play in it as well despite being tight, the job is big enough I'd be as well changing it anyway! It's due every 3 years so it's probably a year or so overdue.

Really enjoyable video:) A volvo would be an awesome addition to the fleet. We used to have Volvo T5's as traffic/response cars when I was in the police in the Midlands in the early 2000's.Awesome motors and rapid too! @ Captain 70s have you had any thoughts of some possible merchandise?Stickers and mousemats etc of the acclaim and dolomites would be cool.

Dumfries and Galloway used to run Volvo estates back when I was at college and would strike fear into the hearts of any student driver daring to use the dual carriageway as a drag strip!
No thoughts of merch as yet, will see how the channel grows. If I hit 1,000 subscribers my mind will be blown! Currently just concentrating on weekly uploads and high production values.

@@CaptainSlow1992 I bet the student drivers wouldn't make the same mistake again trying to use the roads as drag strips, as soon as they saw the volvo squad cars flying up to them in their rear view mirror!
Might be worth having a page on facebook where you could share your video's, that would be cool.
      Keep up the good work

Time to borrow an ugga dugga gun to get that pulley off. Shouldn't need to worry about locking the engine if it's in first with the handbrake on. Loving the Volvo, the last of the RWD. Sounds great and it's very well equipped, shame it's an auto as I don't feel like auto suits a revvy 6. I can only compare to the similar age Disco and early DII but it would've competed well. Those lines on the rear window are likely to be radio antennae, no reason to have defrosters in those windows and the DII was the same.
A V8 auto D1 (3.5 on carbs if you can find one) would be great for cruising if you want to keep it British and will swallow all of the things. Maybe difficult to find a good one but that never held you back before! If you bought one of those I'd be forced to visit.

Plan in motion to swap the belt on Sunday, complete with uga dugga gun fun!
I reckon you're right about the radio aerial in window thing, I'm not used to this modern tech. To me a radio aerial is a big metal pole sticking out of the bodywork!
